Unpacking the Innovation-Performance Link: Challenges for Organisation Research

The idea that innovation leads to positive economic performance has become a sort of article of faith in recent years. Managers and policy makers consider innovation as the main strategy to react to increasing competitive pressures from fast growing economies. However, empirical evidence showing that innovating organisations outperform non-innovating ones remains scant and scattered. Due to measurement and data problems the link between innovation and performance is too often simply assumed. Though there have been insights from the economics literature into the link between the two, economic models have tended to focus narrowly on certain easily measurable aspects of innovation such as R&D effort and its effect on labour productivity. But such models fail to get at a deeper understanding of the micro-foundations of innovation and the behavioural processes that would, for instance, provide a more nuanced understanding of the link to performance. We therefore need models that go beyond the simple profit motive, and price signals, which drive most economic models of innovation.

Organization scholars have addressed some of these shortcomings. In general, a behavioural theory of the firm suggests that the greater past performance is above certain goals/aspiration levels, the lower the likelihood of innovative efforts, which can feed forward to future (under) performance. And the more companies underperform relative to their aspirations, the more likely they are to invest in innovation. However some performance mechanisms can have an ambiguous effect on innovation as research has shown. Still, our grasp of the link between innovation and performance remains tenuous due in part to its complexity – there are too many intervening processes, time lags, feedbacks, incentive structures, agency problems etc.

In this track, we aim to reconcile conflicting results in prior research, and we also hope to open up a dialogue for promising future research directions in this area. We welcome papers that focus on organizational conditions - managerial, structural, cultural, and processual (especially knowledge processing/learning) that might stabilize the innovation-performance link. We invite both empirical and conceptual papers that deal with the behavioural, social and cognitive aspects of the link between innovation and performance, and that rely on different methodologies and deal with research topics such as:

    ·                     How can organization theories model and integrate performance cues and innovation?

    ·                     What mechanisms mediate between innovation and performance – especially in times of environmental instability and uncertainty: e.g. adapting aspirations, threat rigidity, temporal stability of R&D investments, planned alternation of exploration and exploitation?

    ·                     Strategic and managerial challenges such as:

    • How is the processing of performance cues integrated with absorptive capacities and the dynamic capabilities of companies?
    • How well can performance cues be processed and translated into effective innovation strategies, and R&D programs?
    • Do underperformers indeed invest more in R&D and innovation?
    • Do sectors in crisis adapt their innovation or learning targets
    • To what extent do companies struggle with inconsistent performance cues, especially under conditions of environmental instability and uncertainty?
    • To what extent do companies in sectors in severe crisis recoup their innovative efforts?

    ·                     Which alternative 'processes' (e.g. signal and information processing, incentive and governance mechanisms, learning processes of different kinds, capabilities and routines, etc.) moderate the innovation-performance link?

    ·                     What kinds of models and methods enable us to cope with the causal ambiguity in the relationship between innovation and performance?

2010 INBAM Conference Annual Meeting-indexed journals Dear colleague,

Because of the year end holidays in many countries, the INBAM submission portal will remain open until 28 February.

Once the Conference has concluded, the guest editors for each session will decide which papers are to be recommended for inclusion in the special issues of the corresponding publications. Depending on the quality of submissions, up to half of the best papers will be published in the special issues of these SSCI journals. This will make this and subsequent events organized by the Editor Network of the International Network of Business and Management Journals (INBAM) quite unique. The issues will be published the year following after the Conference.

The Conference will take place at the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Business Administration of these two institutions from June 1st (Tuesday) to June 4th (Friday), 2010. The following editors-in-chief have confirmed their presence and participation: Robert Blackburn (International Small Business Journal), David Audretsch (Small Business Economics), Theresa Welbourne (Human Resource Management), Slawek Magala (Journal of Organizational Change Management), Gary Akehurst (Service Industries Journal), Adrian Ziderman (International Journal of Manpower), Rick D.

Hackett (Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences), and Linda Canina (Cornell Hospitality Quarterly).

The overall theme of the Conference, "Creativity and Innovation in an International Context," will be broken down into subtopics, with a total of eight sessions (two are closed currently), one for each journal resulting in sessions on innovation and creativity in relation to small and medium-sized enterprises (for the ISBJ, it is closed), entrepreneurship (for SBE, it is closed), human resource management (for HRM), organizational change (for the JOCM), services (for the SIJ), the influence of managers and employees characteristics on creativity and  innovation (for the IJM), the Virtuous Organization (for the CJAS), hospitality and tourism (for CHQ). In this way, the various areas can be adapted to the different streams of research and editorial policies of each journal and editor participating at the Conference.

The journal editor corresponding to each area will open the session with an outline of how to publish in that journal. Authors will then go on to present the papers chosen for each session.

One of the aims of the Conference is to select papers that, depending on the specialty of the journal and the quality of the papers, will constitute special issues of each of the eight journals.

The selection and review of articles will be carried out, firstly, by the INBAM and the Conference Scientific Committee. Those papers that do not reach the required standards of quality and rigour demanded by these journals, in terms of theoretical framework and methodology, will not be accepted for presentation at the Conference. Papers should be highly relevant, with a clear orientation to the overall theme of the Conference and/or the research focus favoured by the journals.

A maximum of 15 papers per session will then be selected for presentation at the Conference. A team of three will be responsible for each of the subtopics (presented in the sessions or areas) and they will serve as guest editors for the special issues.

    With the best wishes,

    Special Announcement:

Project Management Institute Academic Resources Opens Call for Research Proposals

Preliminary proposals will be accepted between 1 February and 25 April 2010

Newtown Square, Pa., 11 Jan. 2010-Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's leading professional membership organization for project managers, is pleased to announce its 2010 request for proposals for 2011 research funding.  PMI's Academic Resources Department annually solicits research proposals on any topic related to project, program, or portfolio management with funding provided to selected recipients.

Preliminary proposals will be accepted between 1 February and 25 April 2010, and those advancing to the second round will be notified by 10 July 2010. All grant recipients will be notified of awards up to US $50,000 by November 2010.  Funded projects begin on 1 January 2011.

As a relatively young area of academic inquiry, project management is ripe for academic research that will advance knowledge and inform practice. Examples of topics on which little research exists include ethics and governance, project management as a career choice, portfolio prioritization, standards evaluation and development, the role of project management in government, non-profit organizations, non-government organizations, the health care industry and education.  The current global financial crisis also offers an interesting and timely context in which to explore the use and utility of project management.

PMI is looking for proposals from scholars, both within and outside the field of project management, including management, organizational psychology, sociology of formal organizations, education, linguistics and others. Proposed research must have a direct application to any aspect of the project management body of knowledge or its practice. In addition, PMI encourages proposals on research involving multi-disciplinary teams of investigators or teams consisting of academics and practitioners, who bring new ways of thinking and related bodies of literature to the field.

For detailed information on the RFP timeline, the application process and submission guidelines, please visit the PMI Sponsored Research Submission Page.  Questions should be addressed to the Research Coordinator at research.program@pmi.org.

    Books

    --------------------------------------------------------

    From: parissahaghirian@gmail.com Parissa Haghirian

    Dear friends and colleagues
I would like to introduce a new book, which I edited.

Innovation and Change in Japanese Management
Edited by Parissa Haghirian (Sophia University)
With an introduction by Makoto Abe (Tokyo University)
    Palgrave Macmillan (2010)
    Hardcover: 240 pages
    ISBN-10: 0230216676
    Price: 95 US$
    http://us.macmillan.com/innovationandchangeinjapanesemanagement

    The Book
The mystic image of Japanese management changed during the recession of the 1990s. Japanese corporations had problems adapting to the restructuring measures. They were economic challenges and were slow in the implementing reforms and expected to develop more shareholder value and become more like their Western counterparts. Western observers and media criticized Japanese corporations and managers for being too consensus and harmony oriented and not being able to deal with crisis or rapid changes. But Japan and Japanese management did change.

In many cases these changes were not as radical or as spectacular as expected. Western suggestions and business models were not completely ignored, but many of them are not applicable in a Japanese context. Japan and Japanese management changed in its own way, in a Japanese Way. Innovation and Change in Japanese Management shows which transformation processes and changes can be observed in Japanese companies in reaction to the economic challenges of the past decade. The book presents new research results and investigates the variety of changes Japanese corporations and managers have experienced in recent years.
