Leadership 2.0: Time for Action
Call for Proposals – Deadline March 1, 2010
Conference Theme
Leadership 2.0: Time for Action
Version 2.0 is the refinement of the original-improving on aspects that did not work and expanding on those that succeeded. Leadership 2.0: Time for Action builds on interpretations of the Web 2.0 concept-the shift from the Internet as a place to read information to using the Web as a means for connection and collaboration-and uses it as an analogy for advancement in the leadership field. The conference theme signifies that it is time to shed mindsets, teachings, policies, and practices that are no longer useful or applicable to the next generation of leaders, or to the challenges that the world will face. It is time to investigate, research, study, teach, practice, and implement theories, strategies, and actions that are necessary to transform leadership knowledge and practice worldwide.
The ILA's 12th Annual Global Conference calls on leadership scholars and educators, business and community leaders, students and young leaders to propose conference sessions that offer the finest leadership learnings of your sector and across sectors to best position leaders and leadership for the next decade.
Read the Full Conference Theme Statement
Forming Your Proposal
The ILA seeks proposal submissions that represent the best contemporary thinking about leadership from a diverse range of leadership scholars, practitioners, educators, program directors, consultants, students, and other leaders and leadership professionals. The conference theme is meant to assist, not limit or restrict proposal creation.
Proposals will be reviewed and accepted through the ILA Member Interest Group (MIG) tracks. Each proposal must select a MIG Track through which to be reviewed.
Please review the Member Interest Group Track Guidelines to determine the appropriate selection for your proposal.
Each proposal must also determine a presentation format. Please review the Presentation Session Types to determine the presentation for your proposed conference session.
Please review these additional proposal creation areas when forming your proposal:
· Areas of Evaluation – Peer Reviewers will follow this rubric when evaluating proposed conference sessions.
· Using the Online Proposal System – Helpful tips for using the ILA Online Proposal System
· Proposals In Progress – ILA's popular collaboration program for creating complete proposals with others with similar expertise
Proposal Requirements and Guidelines
Please make sure to review all submission requirements and guidelines prior to submitting. Submissions that do not follow all of the guidelines will not be reviewed.
· Maximum Session Presenters: Proposals should include no more than Four (4) presenters (excluding chair or commentator role)
· Rule of 2: No individual may submit or be a part of more than Two (2) proposal submissions (excluding chair or commentator role)
· Confirm Presenters: Proposals must have approval from all individuals listed in a proposal prior to submission
· Proposals must include:

This NSF sponsored workshop on Design and Innovation may be of interest to those in the TIM community. For questions, please contact Professor Wei Chen at Northwestern University (weichen@northwestern.edu). Also, note the deadline of February 12.
Dear Colleagues,
Building upon the successful NSF Design Workshop Series (2008-2009) on "Interdisciplinary Design as an Instructional Discipline", we are pleased to announce a new workshop entitled, "Driving Innovation through Design - Engineering in 21st <http://www.segal.northwestern.edu/designworkshop2010> Century" <http://www.segal.northwestern.edu/designworkshop2010> , which will take place at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, April 15-16, 2010. This workshop is jointly sponsored by the NSF Engineering Design and Innovation (EDI) program and the Engineering Education & Centers (EEC), together with Northwestern University McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Segal Design Institute, Kellogg School of Management, and Medill School of Journalism.
For workshop information and application, please visit http://www.segal.northwestern.edu/designworkshop2010.
The one and an half day workshop will bring together a group of university administrators (Deans/department heads), faculty, researchers, and industrial practitioners across a variety of disciplines such as engineering, business, economics, journalism, arts and architecture, education and social policy. The goals are (1) to reach a deeper understanding of the transdisciplinary issues faced in university and the world of design, (2) to foster interactions and facilitate dialogue by collectively sharing experiences of creating, cultivating, and sustaining successful interdisciplinary research and education programs, and (3) to seek synergistic research and educational efforts towards establishing Design as a path towards innovation and transdisciplinary cross-connection.
Throughout the workshop we hope to introduce new ideas and perspectives and forge new connections. We will begin on the morning of April 15th with four brief presentations that address the need for innovation in the years ahead. Perspectives will cover a wide range: from macroeconomic to the pedagogical. This will be followed by an interactive panel discussion. The afternoon will feature another four presentations that present novel approaches to research and education, featuring design as a pathway to innovation and transdisciplinary cross-connection. This will be followed by the "Panel of Deans" during which the leaders of several leading engineering schools respond to the day's presentations and share their own visions. Throughout the day, ample time will be devoted to informal exchanges. Prior to dinner, all attendees will be invited to join Design:Chicago, which is an annual event hosted by the Master in Product Development (MPD) program, the Northwestern University School of Engineering, and the Segal Design Institute that highlights Chicago's vibrant design community. As a final activity in the morning of April 16th, we will discuss how we can proactively work together to accomplish our education and research objectives.
Participation in the workshop will be limited to 50 attendees and will require submission of the online application <http://www.segal.northwestern.edu/designworkshop2010/application/> and commitment to attending and actively participating in the entire workshop. Selection will be based on having a broad, diverse group that best addresses the theme of this workshop. Attendees will be eligible for travel support, hotel accommodation, and flight (or other means of transportation) up to $750/person. Priority for attendance will be given to applications received prior to February 12, 2010. Selected attendees will be informed prior to February 26, 2010.
Please invite your Dean/Department Chair to attend this workshop if you think this helps accomplish our workshop goals. If you would like us to send a special invitation to your Dean, please contact Prof. Wei Chen (weichen@northwestern.edu) before Feb. 5, 2010.
We look forwarding to your participation. Please forward this message to parties who might be interested.

Book Announcement
--------------------------------------------------------
I would like to briefly announce the availability of a book I have co- authored entitled The Sergeant Major Syndrome: A Book For People Who Want to Advance Their Careers. It is intended as a career advice book for the popular reader. It is designed to help the reader better understand the relational dynamics of organizational life for the dual purpose of becoming a more effective manager and for more effectively managing one's career . It is written for the popular reader and can be a suitable resource for HRM or Careers courses. Initial readers have also suggested it is a fun read.
Due to the nature of the publishing industry today, we have made the book available online as a free download at:
http://www.managementdevelopment.biz/thebook
Here's the introduction:
" In the glory days of the British Empire, commissioned officers in the military were children of the aristocracy. A commoner entering the ranks might hope to rise to the rank of Sergeant Major (Master Sergeant), but there was no chance of crossing the glass ceiling separating the enlisted men from the commissioned officers, Lieutenant and above. It was widely known that the British Army was run by its Sergeant Majors, but, no matter how much a Sergeant Major was valued, the reward for performing well was no more than another seniority stripe on his sleeve and another, more impossible assignment. Those who lived to retire ended their careers with Her Majesty's sincerest gratitude – and little else.
" I have served as a corporate Sergeant Major and, if you are reading this book with interest, then probably so have you. Unlike our military predecessor, today's organizational Sergeant Major is not held down by tradition or policy, but by a variety of factors which, if understood, can be changed. Part One of this book will help you to understand what a Sergeant Major is and how these limiting factors operate. In Part Two, we outline a plan for strategizing what you will choose to do about being – or not being – a Sergeant Major."
