    Dear everyone,

With this letter we would like to call for your participation in our caucus on "Entrepreneurship and its context". Please find below the information pertinent to this caucus.

    1. Abstract: The entrepreneurship literature suggests that entrepreneurship is shaped by its context and it can also alter its context. On the other hand, globalization has made it possible for entrepreneurs to move to another context, i.e. engage in international entrepreneurial activities or simply immigrate to another country to do business. To explore this phenomenon, this caucus offers a platform to discuss the relationship between entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial contexts. Participants will examine the topics that have been explored in the literature to pinpoint areas that need more attention. The result will be a research agenda with key research questions and directions for future inquiries for three major

themes: (1) Contextual factors affecting entrepreneurship; (2) The impact of entrepreneurship on the context; (3) Entrepreneurial migration: its characteristics, causes and effects.

    2. Organizers: Mai Thi Thanh Thai and Ekaterina Turkina from HEC Montreal, Canada

    3. Time and venue: 3:00 PM-4:30 PM on Monday, August 15, 2011; Room La Reina North & Center at Hilton Palacio del Rio

    4. Publication opportunities: Journal of Enterprising Communities is committed to organizing a special issue for the theme "entrepreneurial migration"

). We are still seeking sponsors for the other two themes and we are open to your suggestions.

    5. Pre-caucus activities: To ensure that our caucus will be relevant and fruitful for all of us, we would like to ask you to do  these tasks by April

    30:

    •             Required task: Please submit to us a list of paper ideas you would

like to collaborate with other participants to write for the special issues.

Please limit your paper ideas to the 3 major themes of this caucus: (1) Contextual factors affecting entrepreneurship; (2) The impact of entrepreneurship on the context; (3) Entrepreneurial migration: its characteristics, causes and effects

    •             Optional task: If you have done some literature review for your

paper ideas, please send us a list of your literature. If you have complete papers and/or your work-in-progresses that you want to be considered for the special issues, please send them to us too.

We will arrange you into groups of collaborators with the same research topics and send you the list by May 10 so that people in each group will have time to communicate with each other to explore your ideas further. In that way, your meeting at the caucus will be more effective.

    6. Activities at the caucus:

    •             10 minutes: Warm-up activities so that participants know a little

    more about one another

    •             60 minutes: Round-table discussion in 5-6 groups. At the end of the

discussion, each group will summarize paper ideas that come out from the discussion and a draft of your future action plan (i.e. research collaboration, timeline for paper, etc.)

    •             20 minutes: Conclusion with a summary of all paper ideas and action

    plans after the caucus.

If you have any question or suggestion, please do not hesitate to contact us at mai.thai@hec.ca or ekaterina.turkina@hec.ca. We will be happy to be of your assistance.

We would like to thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Apologies for cross-listings

    Dear Colleagues:

We are pleased to report that we have had a strong response to our initial call to abstracts for "Discovering Creativity in Necessity" conference.     This has allowed us to make a strong case with our funders for additional funding for some level of travel assistance beyond the already committed accommodation and conference fee subsidies.  We are awaiting final confirmation on the level of additional support that will be forthcoming.

We are bringing this to your attention because were contacted by individuals who wanted to participate but did not have sufficient funding for travel costs, and so did not submit abstracts.  For this reason we are extending abstracts submission deadline until April 24, 2011.    We have decided to announce a second (and final) adjudication process subject to our obtaining some travel assistance, extending our deadline until April 24, 2011.  While we cannot commit to obtaining travel funding, we will attempt to do so, and thus wish to encourage as many submissions as possible subject to funding opportunities.  We are all excited about what promises to be a very interesting and rewarding conference,

    Dear Colleague,

We would like to draw your attention to a conference on 'Discovering Creativity In Necessity: Organizational Ingenuity under Institutional Constraints' which will be held at McMaster University, DeGroote School of Business, on the 9th and 10th of September, 2011. Keynotes include Bill Starbuck, former President at the Academy of Management and professor emeritus, NYU, and Teresa Cascioli, former Chair and CEO Lakeport Brewing Income Fund and former Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

The main purpose of this conference is to expand our understanding of innovation and creativity in contexts and environments where resources are scarce, and freedom of action is highly constrained. To meet the challenge of these situations actors often develop a set of skills, social tactics, and mental orientation that express 'organizational ingenuity': the ability to create innovative solutions within structural constraints using limited resources and imaginative problem solving.

The conference is organized in conjunction with a forthcoming special issue of Organization Studies. The conference is therefore a unique opportunity for participants who are interested in submitting to the special issue to share ideas and receive feedback prior to the Organization Studies deadline of February 28, 2012.

Scholars and practitioners who are interested in attending the conference must submit abstracts by April 15, 2011 (extended to April 24). Authors selected for presentation will be notified by May 1st, 2011, with full paper expected by August 1st, 2011.

Registration fees will be waived for participating presenters. In addition, all hotel accommodations (not including incidentals) and conference meals will be covered for participating presenters.

Further details as they become available will be posted on the conference website: http://www.degroote.mcmaster.ca/TheIngenuityConference

    Warmest Regards,

Benson Honig, Israel Drori, Joseph Lampel

Management innovation: a journey into the core of research in management

    EURAM Mini-Conference on Management Innovation

    Organizing committee:

Prof. Dr. Henk W. Volberda, RSM, Erasmus University
Prof. Dr. Frans. A.J. Van Den Bosch, RSM Erasmus University

    Key-note speakers include:

Prof. Dr. Julian Birkinshaw, London Business School, UK
Prof. Dr. Fariborz Damanpour, Rutgers Business School, USA

Deadline for submission:  August 1, 2011

Papers will be selected for publication in a Special Issue of European Management Review and a Themed Section in Organization Studies

Deadline for submission:  August 1, 2011

    Purpose

As innovation is considered central to firms' competitive advantage, innovation research has become a cornerstone of strategic management inquiry. However, the vast majority of research attention is dedicated to understanding how firms can stimulate technological innovation. An emerging (or rather resurrecting) research trend espouses the benefits of management innovation. Management innovation refers to the introduction of management practices, processes and structures that are intended to further organizational goals (Birkinshaw, Hamel and Mol, 2008). The emergent dialogue consists of conceptual work (e.g., Birkinshaw et al., 2008), historical outlines of various management innovations (e.g., Mol and Birkinshaw, 2007) and empirical studies (e.g., Damanpour, Walker and Avellaneda, 2009; Vaccaro, Jansen, Van Den Bosch, and Volberda, 2010).

    Background

Despite the recent surge in academic interest, management innovation remains an under-researched topic. As recent work emphasizes the importance of management innovation for firm performance, both as a complement of technological innovation (Damanpour et al., 2009) and as an independent phenomenon (Mol and Birkinshaw, 2009), reaching a better understanding of the issues surrounding management innovation should be high on the research agenda. For example, Feigenbaum and Feigenbaum (2005: 96) argue that "the systematization of management innovations will be a critical success factor for 21st century companies".

    Research questions

The goal of this EURAM Mini-Conference and special issue is to stimulate academic enquiry by providing a platform to share ideas and state-of-the art research on management innovation. To this end, we invite paper submissions addressing, among others, the following topics:

    -                      Conceptual contributions: What is the level of analysis at which management innovation should be considered? How to conceptualize management innovation as an outcome vs. management innovation as a process? How to describe and analyze management innovation as a process? How to define and describe the degree of newness of management innovation?

    -                      Antecedents of management innovation: Who are the actors that drive management innovation? What is the role of top/middle/line managers in management innovation? Is the generation of management innovation a top-down or a bottom-up process? What is the role of internal and external change agents? What are the organizational conditions that stimulate the introduction of management innovations? How to develop conceptual frameworks focusing on the dynamics of co-evolutionary interactions at both firm and industry level of management innovation?

    -                      Consequences of management innovation: What are the implications of management innovation for firm performance in different environmental conditions? How is management innovation related to technological innovation over time and under different conditions? For what outcomes other than financial performance may management innovation be important?

    -                      Methodological contributions: How to measure management innovation? What are appropriate scales? How to obtain objective measures of management innovation?

Empirical, conceptual, and practitioner-oriented papers from a plurality of theoretical perspectives, units of analyses, contexts, and research designs are welcome, with particular encouragement for those integrating multiple theoretical lenses and/or methodological approaches. The focus is on high quality papers that potentially move the field of management innovation forward. Papers will be selected for publication in a special issue of European Management Review and a Themed Section in Organization Studies. Please send papers and address all correspondence to: Kevin Heij MScBA (kheij@rsm.nl ), Department of Strategic Management & Business Environment, RSM Erasmus University, P.O. Box 1738, 3000 DR Rotterdam, The Netherlands. CALL FOR PAPERS

    "Sustaining Sustainability in Organizations"

Special Issue in the Journal of Business Ethics

With this call for papers, we intend to invite research that advances a discussion that

relates to how sustainability is developed and maintained (sustained) in organizations

with a particular emphasis on international organizations, whether they are multinational

corporations (MNCs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or international

governmental organizations (IGOs). We consider sustainability to be an approach to

business that considers economic, environmental and social issues in balanced, holistic

and long term ways that benefit current and future generations of concerned stakeholders.

The invited research may contribute on multiple levels: individual, organization, industry,

field or community, and international or global levels, to develop research about how to

sustain sustainability in organizations from management and ethical perspectives,

particularly using theoretical lenses of strategy and organization theory. The impact of

ethical, sustainable thinking and the associated deep rooted changes have enhanced

business and society. Now, managers and others need to ensure the sense of urgency is

sustained so that they do not lose ground and rather, ensure that ethical, sustainable

progress continues. We will consider both theoretical and empirical papers and suggest

particular subtopic areas below. This issue will publish high quality and progressive

scholarship that builds theory. Furthermore, the research included will develop the area of

sustainability so that it moves toward a more mature stage. Submissions may focus on,

but must not be limited to, one of the following domains:

Sustaining Sustainability in Organizations Subtopic Areas and Questions:

    1) Types of Organizations: MNCs, NGOs, and IGOs

How do concerned stakeholders maintain their ethical influence on MNCs so that

MNCs continuously improve in regards to sustainability and ethics?

How do MNCs define and enact CSR? After this has happened, how do firms

maintain the focus on it over time so that they do not lapse into old bad habits?

How do stakeholders, in comparison to MNCs, expect sustainability practices to

evolve; what outcomes do they expect? Will ethical, sustainable practices prevail

    with stakeholders' support?

How do the stakeholders and MNCs resolve differences and tensions these days

    and how has it changed?

What are the future plans of MNCs in terms of their sustainable transformation?

How fast do they plan to change and which stakeholders are they choosing to

satisfy? Which ones will be left unsatisfied and what will be the consequences? Is

this possible imbalance acceptable from an ethical standpoint?

How does the presence of MNCs affect the progress of sustainability in developed

    nations?

How do MNCs transfer sustainability innovation from one subsidiary to others?

What is the role of the headquarters?

What are IGOs and NGOs doing to continue to promote and maintain sustainable

practices and ethics in organizations globally?

What are IGOs' and NGO's capabilities compared to MNCs', in respect of

    promoting sustainability globally?

What motivates IGOs and NGOs to promote sustainability and how impactful are

the actions? Which ones find long term success in their sustainability initiatives

    and why?

Are developing nations acting in a sustainable and ethical manner and can they? If

they are, how are they doing so and maintaining their progress?

What are IGOs and NGOs doing to support or hinder sustainable development in

either developing or developed nations? What are the differences in their

    approaches in these different environments?

Are IGOs and NGOs providing continuing support through incentives to

environmental entrepreneurs for their sustainable technological developments and

is it working? Are these incentives and projects nationally strategic to the

countries in which the entrepreneurs reside such that there is beneficial economic

development? Does the support include emphasis on ethical decision making and

    management practices?

How do IGOs and NGOs coordinate and collaborate with each other, with

governments and with firms to influence sustainable practices?

    2) Types of Activities: Environmental Innovation and Combating Climate Change

How do firms harness creative destruction when pursuing environmental

sustainability efforts? What happens after the big changes? Does sustainability

    innovation become incremental?

What talents and special expertise are required for environmental innovation? Is

ethical character and behavior part of the talent profile? How has the labor pool

changed to support this special type of sustainable innovation e.g., full life cycle

designs and use or development of special reusable or recyclable materials.

Is there a global model of firm sustainability innovation that has been sustained?

If there is, does/do the model(s) include subscription to a set of ethical values,

what are they, and how is the ethical culture sustained?

How does green technology evolution and revolution affect the current and future

competitive landscape? Will competitive behavior amongst firms also become

more ethical because the technological shift is one towards sustainability?

Which firms will survive the changes and will we experience an increase in

competition or more oligopoly due to the large investments required to develop

    green technology and commercialize it?

Who will be the winners and losers as we adopt green technologies and retire the

old ones? What are the ethical questions to consider under these circumstances?

How will consumers benefit from green technology? Will life become cheaper

and will our standard of living improve overall? How will the benefits of green

    technology be distributed?

How do consumers need to change so as to support the green technology

revolution? Will they change and if so, how fast? Will demand increase for goods

and services produced in currently perceived ethical, sustainable ways and will

the related standards be maintained and improved? How will ethical, sustainable

standards be set so as to satisfy consumer tastes and expectations?

How have firms responded to climate change and maintained their sustainable

performance? What processes of learning and change have they undergone in

order to find the right balance between seeking profitability and fighting climate

    change?

What kinds of organizational changes have helped firms to adapt to the

environmental changes that the world is experiencing?

Are firms changing adequately to help slow climate change and if not, what

    more needs to be achieved?

What aspects of supply chains are most impactful on climate change and how

should firms discover and adopt best practices in their global supply chains?

Should these best practices include ethics and how will they be explicitly

    incorporated into them?

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Hello colleagues,

Last year I wrote a book called Online Interviews in Real Time, available from Sage (See: http://tinyurl.com/einterview  ). This book focuses on synchronous interviews conducted with or in text, videoconferencing, virtual worlds or meeting spaces. I've edited a companion that is coming out next fall: Cases in Online Interview Research. (See: http://tinyurl.com/e-interview2  ) The new book contains 10 multi-disciplinary cases of research with data collected from mostly synchronous interviews. Each case is followed by two commentaries-- one by another book contributor and one from me, using an "E-Interview Research Framework" as the basis for my analysis.

The "E-Interview Research Framework" is a collection of models and key questions; I created this framework to further develop and organize materials introduced in Online Interviews in Real Time. My purpose is to offer some guiding principles for people who are designing research or who are reviewing proposals for, or completed studies that include, online interviews.

In mid-April I want to convene  2-3 online focus groups with people who a) teach research methods (qualitative), b) serve on doctoral committees or c) are on IRB or other review boards. I want to see what others think about this "Framework" and the key questions I've identified so far and learn about additional questions or concerns they would have about a research proposal or study that uses online interviews for data collection.

I am looking for a diverse group of maybe 20 people altogether. Once I see who is participating I will schedule based on time zones. The focus groups will be held in Adobe Connect. If you are interested please contact me off-list: jsalmons-at-vision2lead.com.

    Thanks!
