    --------------------------------------------------------

    Please forgive cross-postings

The Management Consulting Division doctoral consortium will be part of the pre-conference program at the 2011 Academy of Management meeting in San Antonio.  As a bridge-building division of the Academy, we invite doctoral students from all divisions to apply to this consortium.  The consortium focus is on helping doctoral students at all stages who have an interest in professional services prepare their manuscripts for scholarly publication.

Professor Anne Huff will be presenting the approach she outlines in her seminal work, Writing for Scholarly Publication.  Then, in the subsequent session, doctoral students will have the opportunity to present their research in-progress and receive developmental feedback from scholars studying professional services.

Those interested in attending should submit their application to Matt Semadeni (semadeni@indiana.edu) no later than June 15, 2011.  The application should include the following:

    ·         A one-page bio that includes the applicant's contact information, research interests, publications, etc.

    ·         The rough draft of a manuscript focusing on bridge-building research touching upon professional services.   This manuscript could be a dissertation proposal or some other work in progress that is targeted for scholarly publication.  The manuscript should be developed enough for the review committee to have a good sense of the theories being applied and (if it the work is empirical) the data and methods being utilized.  We encourage both quantitative and qualitative work to be submitted.

Once accepted to the consortium, you will be paired with a scholar who will confer with you on developing your manuscript for scholarly publication.  Given the specific attention each manuscript will receive, space for the consortium is limited.  The deadline for receipt of materials is June 15, 2011.

The consortium will be immediately followed by a networking lunch that participants are encouraged to attend.  During the lunch, Marilyn Harris, a scholar in action learning and consulting, along with other faculty will be presenting advice for a "holistic doctoral journey".

The Management Consulting division seeks to be a special "bridge" in the academy - between divisions and  between constituent groups (academics, business, and consulting).

International Journal of Economics and Business Research (IJEBR)

Call For papers-Extension of Deadline to 15 June 2011
. We are encouraged by the number of excellent papers we have received, and we are extending the deadline so that we might increase the diversity of topics covered.

Special Issue on: "Systems Theory in Economics and Business: Theory Development, Application, Impact, and Future"

Guest Editors:           James McHann, Walsh College, USA

                                        Laura Frost, Walsh College, USA

The purpose of this special issue is to explore past, present, and particularly future uses of systems theory in economics and business research and practice. As the theory of systems, in its various manifestations, continues to develop and to be applied across multiple disciplines, it is proving ever more useful in illuminating and solving diverse problems. In turn, feedback from the different applications of general systems theory is helping to further develop systems theory and its cognates. On the one hand, observing the past and present of systems theory from some perspectives, it would seem still to be on the periphery of contemporary economics and business research and practice, if not languishing out of favor. On the other hand, observing the development of systems theory and its uses from other perspectives, there appears to be a growing awareness of its power, potential, and absolute necessity, especially as widespread awareness increases regarding the complex interdependencies and dynamics of national and international society, economics, and business. For this issue, we encourage submissions of theoretical and empirical papers, meta-analytic reviews, and narrative literature reviews on new developments in the theory of systems; its relationship to other approaches to learning, knowing, problem-solving, and practicing; and the consequent new uses of systems theory and its cognates in economics and business.

       Subject Coverage

The following are illustrative topics that are consistent with the spirit of the special issue, but other topics may be suitable as well, as long as they relate to the use of systems theory and its cognates and applications in economics and business:

    • History of the development of systems theory and its practical uses in economics and business
    • Contemporary developments in systems theory and/or any of its cognates such as structural-functionalism, autopoiesis, first and second-order cybernetics, social systems theory, complex adaptive systems, etc., and their relevant use in economics and business
    • Applications or uses of systems theory such as systems engineering, system dynamics, viable system models, management cybernetics, soft systems methodology, systems thinking, learning organizations, etc.
    • Conceptual map or ordering of interrelationships between systems theory and its cognates and applications, and the implications for use in economics and business
    • Relationship of general systems theory and other approaches to learning, knowing, and problem-solving, including the scientific method and philosophical hermeneutics
    • Assessment of contemporary impact and future prospects for systems theory and its cognates and applications, including prescriptions for advancing its widespread use in economics and business
    • Identification and impact of long-term reinforcing feedback processes in social, political, economic, and business history, including observations of normative implications for current practice
    • The phenomena of dispersed and exploding knowledge, market mechanisms, complex adaptive systems, and the necessary use of systems theory and especially system dynamics in economics and business
    • Use of systems theory in nation building and the development of emerging countries
    • Implications of systems theory on macroeconomic theories, various theories of political economy, as well as national and multi-national economic policy
    • How systems theory helps explain and address the current global financial crisis, and how it may help illuminate ways to prevent future crises
    • What systems theory says about the development of economic policies and practices for long-term prosperity
    • The use of systems theory and its implications upon various theories of the firm
    • Environmental issues, management for competitive and sustainable business success, and the use of systems theory
    • Use of systems theory and its cognates and applications to drive individual and organizational learning, development of intellectual capital, and value creation in the global, knowledge age economy
    • Organizational theory, design, behavior, development and change, and the use of systems theory and its cognates and applications
    • Dynamic vs. episodic strategic leadership and management approaches using systems theory, especially open, social, and adaptive systems concepts
    • The use of general systems theory in the process of developing management theories and in synthesizing a comprehensive theory of management
    • Education strategies and methods for increasing the widespread and skillful use of systems theory and its cognates and applications in economics and business

India is one of the world's most vibrant economies and a subject of much interest to management academics and practitioners. Yet, rigorous research within the management field that employs Indian firms as the context or India as the research site has been sparse.  Much attention has been given to the information technology (IT) / outsourcing sectors and corporate governance issues in the context of India and Indian firms. With this call for papers, APJM intends to take a step in remedying this situation.   The intent is to spotlight Indian innovation and entrepreneurship across various sectors as well as place current developments within a larger socio-political context.  Therefore, this special issue is expected to deepen our theoretical and empirical understanding of India and Indian firms, as well as the unique challenges that emerging economies face.

This special issue focuses on Indian innovation and entrepreneurship and explores the proposition that these phenomena are qualitatively different from their manifestations in other parts of the world.  Therefore, we invite papers that develop or extend existing theories of entrepreneurship and innovation using India or Indian firms as an empirical context or strategic research site.

Topic areas include (but are not limited to):

    1) India's national innovation system and entrepreneurship infrastructure

    2) The role of the public sector, universities, governments (national/state/city) and various financing mechanisms (banks, VC's, etc) in fostering innovation/entrepreneurship in India

    3) Innovation clusters in India

    4) Challenges of innovation and entrepreneurship in the Indian context

    5) Multinationals and the organization of their innovation activity in India

    6) Corporate entrepreneurship – how Indian firms are organizing for innovation

    7) The emergence of a new breed of Indian firms and entrepreneurs since the 1980's (such as Infosys, Bharti Airtel, Biocon, HCL and their respective founders, etc.)

    8) Innovation in organizational forms – how indigenous family businesses are adapting themselves to compete on the global stage

    9) The role of the Indian diaspora in nurturing innovation within India

    10) The role played by specific communities in India (such as the Gujaratis, Sindhis, etc) in fostering entrepreneurship

    11)  Social entrepreneurship: innovative products, services and organizations focused on serving the masses; the role of NGOs and foundations

    12)  Innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging sectors such as alternative energy

    13)  New/unique models of innovation and entrepreneurship within the Indian context – such as "jugaad" and lean innovation

    14)  Critical perspectives: Are innovation and entrepreneurship contributing to increasing economic polarization of the Indian society?

Empirical papers (both quantitative/qualitative) that employ theoretical perspectives from the fields of strategy, entrepreneurship, international business, organization studies, marketing and innovation and more conceptual papers, especially those that are grounded in economics, sociology, history, political science and critical studies are welcome. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

All papers will be refereed through a double-blind peer-review process.  A conference based on submissions to the special issue is being planned to run tentatively around July of 2012 (details to follow). A guide for authors, sample copies and other relevant information for submitting papers are available on the Author Guidelines webpage of APJM or by clicking here: http://www.springer.com/business+%26+management/business+for+professionals/journal/10490.

Please feel free to contact Professors Anil Nair (anair@odu.edu) or Sanjay Jain (sjain4@scu.edu) with any questions about the Special Issue, APJM, or the potential Special Issue Conference.

Intended date for Special Issue Publication:  Late 2013

    CALL FOR PAPERS

Entrepreneurial Action Volume 14 of Advances in Entrepreneurship, Firm Emergence and Growth Due date: August 1, 2011

    Editors:
Andrew C. Corbett, RPI; Jerome Katz, Saint Louis University

Advances in Entrepreneurship, Firm Emergence and Growth provides an annual examination of the major current research, theoretical, and methodological efforts in the field of entrepreneurship, and its related disciplines, including firm emergence and growth research. The Advances series also publishes papers from other fields, such as strategy, organizational behavior, or sociology that use entrepreneurial samples or make a contribution to entrepreneurial theory or research.

Volume 14 will consider the central issue of entrepreneurial action: while many factors and constructs are important to the phenomenon of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship itself does not happen until someone takes action!  Both theoretical and empirical manuscripts that consider all aspects of entrepreneurial action are encouraged.  A representative, but by no means exhaustive, listing of relevant topics includes:

Ø  The antecedents to entrepreneurial action

Ø  Psychological factors and entrepreneurial action

Ø  Sociological factors and entrepreneurial action

Ø  Economic factors and entrepreneurial action

Ø  Relationships between opportunity recognition, evaluation and entrepreneurial action

Ø  Relationships between failure and entrepreneurial action

Ø  Networks, networking and entrepreneurial action

Ø  Cross-cultural comparative studies of entrepreneurial action

Ø  Theoretical and conceptual models of entrepreneurial action

Ø  Moderators and mediators of entrepreneurial action

Ø  Entrepreneurship education employing entrepreneurial action

Ø  Entrepreneurial action in different context – corporate, social, family business, etc.

The papers in Advances reflect many state-of-the-art topics and approaches, and are written by leading researches in the field, making each volume an important source of information for virtually all entrepreneurship researchers. The distinctive competence of research volumes such as Advances is that the chapters can be published without page restrictions allowing for greater detail in the background, development, and implementation of ideas than is possible in journal articles. This provides authors with the opportunity to fully express their key ideas, provide much more complete support, and include relevant multi-page appendices. In effect, the Advances series provides authors the opportunity to publish an "article of record" of their major theoretical or empirical ideas, and see it disseminated to a wide audience. Today, the series is in the libraries of virtually all of the schools with active Ph.D. programs in entrepreneurship, as well as the majority of AACSB accredited schools with MBA concentrations in entrepreneurship and related fields.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss paper ideas with interested researchers. Submissions to Volume 14 of Advances will be blind reviewed by peers.  Contact information for the editors:  Andrew Corbett, 518/879-9117, acorbett@babson.edu; and Jerry Katz, 314/977-3864, katzja@slu.edu.

Extension Until May 16th, 2011: Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the Journal of Business Ethics

    Sustaining Sustainability in Organizations

Many people have asked for more time because of the overload many of us are experiencing at the end of the term. Consequently, we are offering an extension to submit by May 16th, 2011. We believe the extension will increase the quality of the issue and it is not significiant enough to delay review time lines planned for the special issue process. We look forward to your submissions!

    Javier Delgado-Ceballos, University of Granada

With this call for papers, we invite research that advances a discussion relating to how sustainability is developed and maintained (sustained) in organizations with a particular emphasis on international organizations whether they are multinational corporations (MNCs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or international governmental organizations (IGOs). Please see the cfp for full details.

To be considered for the special issue, "Sustaining Sustainability in Organizations", full papers must be submitted by
May 16, 2011. All submissions will go through a double-blind peer review process. Full papers should be submitted to Deborah E. de Lange at ddelange@suffolk.edu. Please send the paper as a Word or pdf document without identifying information and a separate cover page having identifying information in the same email to Debbie.
