Friends,
Registration for the first Academy/Industry Conference organized by the Network of Leadership Scholars is now open. Register for the conference (there is no registration fee) by cut and paste this link: http://www.planetreg.com/E51183943199
Conference Overview
The purpose of this conference on "Leadership, Sustainability and Innovation" is to address the leadership, sustainability and innovation-related issues that organizations in both the private- and public-sectors are currently facing and are likely to face in the future, and to align the research accordingly. Further, the aim of this conference is not only to discuss these issues but to find solutions and initiate necessary actions. At this conference, we will attain our purpose by providing a "project incubator" using the knowledge and research of the world's best leadership experts. Members of academia, industry, and government will analyze in open discussion sessions specific topics, problems, and issues presented by the participating organizations and as an outcome will generate possible solutions and create research projects to test and implement these solutions.
We are fortunate to have commitments from leading organizations such as Infosys, Lockheed Martin, FDIC and AGCO to participate as "problem/context setters." The sessions are designed around the organizations presenting their leadership and sustainability challenges (the problem), pairing them with an academic partner(s) and a professional "design thinking" facilitator, who run a discussion about how we can design effective research studies to meet the organizational and research needs.
Event Details
The two-day conference starts with a moderated panel discussion on the research and practice challenges at the nexus of leadership, innovation and sustainability featuring Professor Sandra Waddock of Boston College and Professor Sim Sitkin of Duke University. The four research design challenges presented by Infosys, Agco, Lockheed Martin and FDIC range from sustaining leadership excellence and talent to leadership of emergence and complex processes and leading for sustainability. More details and conference schedule will be posted at the NLS web site (http://nls.aomonline.org/)
Looking forward to seeing many of you in San Antonio,
--Nagaraj

Management innovation: a journey into the core of research in management

Prof. Dr. Frans. A.J. Van Den Bosch, RSM Erasmus University
Key-note speakers include:

Call for papers:
Deadline for submission: August 1, 2011
Purpose
As innovation is considered central to firms' competitive advantage, innovation research has become a cornerstone of strategic management inquiry. However, the vast majority of research attention is dedicated to understanding how firms can stimulate technological innovation. An emerging (or rather resurrecting) research trend espouses the benefits of management innovation. Management innovation refers to the introduction of management practices, processes and structures that are intended to further organizational goals (Birkinshaw, Hamel and Mol, 2008). The emergent dialogue consists of conceptual work (e.g., Birkinshaw et al., 2008), historical outlines of various management innovations (e.g., Mol and Birkinshaw, 2007) and empirical studies (e.g., Damanpour, Walker and Avellaneda, 2009; Vaccaro, Jansen, Van Den Bosch, and Volberda, 2010).
Background
Despite the recent surge in academic interest, management innovation remains an under-researched topic. As recent work emphasizes the importance of management innovation for firm performance, both as a complement of technological innovation (Damanpour et al., 2009) and as an independent phenomenon (Mol and Birkinshaw, 2009), reaching a better understanding of the issues surrounding management innovation should be high on the research agenda. For example, Feigenbaum and Feigenbaum (2005: 96) argue that "the systematization of management innovations will be a critical success factor for 21st century companies".
Research questions
The goal of this EURAM Mini-Conference and special issue is to stimulate academic enquiry by providing a platform to share ideas and state-of-the art research on management innovation. To this end, we invite paper submissions addressing, among others, the following topics:
- Conceptual contributions: What is the level of analysis at which management innovation should be considered? How to conceptualize management innovation as an outcome vs. management innovation as a process? How to describe and analyze management innovation as a process? How to define and describe the degree of newness of management innovation?
- Antecedents of management innovation: Who are the actors that drive management innovation? What is the role of top/middle/line managers in management innovation? Is the generation of management innovation a top-down or a bottom-up process? What is the role of internal and external change agents? What are the organizational conditions that stimulate the introduction of management innovations? How to develop conceptual frameworks focusing on the dynamics of co-evolutionary interactions at both firm and industry level of management innovation?
- Consequences of management innovation: What are the implications of management innovation for firm performance in different environmental conditions? How is management innovation related to technological innovation over time and under different conditions? For what outcomes other than financial performance may management innovation be important?
- Methodological contributions: How to measure management innovation? What are appropriate scales? How to obtain objective measures of management innovation?
Empirical, conceptual, and practitioner-oriented papers from a plurality of theoretical perspectives, units of analyses, contexts, and research designs are welcome, with particular encouragement for those integrating multiple theoretical lenses and/or methodological approaches. The focus is on high quality papers that potentially move the field of management innovation forward. Papers will be selected for publication in a special issue of European Management Review and a Themed Section in Organization Studies. Please send papers and address all correspondence to: Kevin Heij MScBA (kheij@rsm.nl ), Department of Strategic Management & Business Environment, RSM Erasmus University, P.O. Box 1738, 3000 DR Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Apologies for cross postings!!
Dear TIM list,
We are looking for more information on dedicated science parks and/or university-affiliated institutes that are designed to work with industry partners (i.e. university institutes with thematic interests... nanotech, solar, nuclear etc.). We are especially interested in considering non-U.S.-based institutes throughout Europe and Asia with inter-university governance or cross-uniiversity R&D collaboration arrangements.
Also, beyond what we have here in Oregon (i.e. http://onami.us/ ), we are unfamiliar with similar inter-university arrangements elsewhere within the U.S., so if you know of any, we would love to get more information on these.
All replies (such as links, names of the institutes, contacts, etc. can go directly to me: ted.khoury@bus.oregonstate.edu
Thank you!

appologies for cross-postings
Colleagues,
Project work involving team members from different locations is becoming mainstream. In fact, academics like you and me routinely manage projects (e.g., conduct a study, write an article, organize a conference) with colleagues from different cities, regions, countries, even continents using a variety of means (e.g., email, Skype, etc.).
Caroline Lacasse (PhD cdt) and I are conducting a study on distributed project teams. The study aims at clarifying individual characteristics and contextual factors that contribute to project team effectiveness as a function of teams' virtual complexity (distance, project characteristics, etc.). Our study is particular in that teams that accept to participate will receive (via email) their own unique team feedback report. This report will suggest ways to improve your team's effectiveness and benchmark itself against other teams.
You are admissible if you are currently working on a project with at least one team member situated in another city, region, country, or continent. Participation is entirely voluntary.
There are 2 steps to participate.
STEP 1. After the consent form, you register the project and list up to 10 project team members. Names and emails will help us understand who is on which project and send the feedback reports. Results will remain confidential. Once the project is registered, you then answer a 30-35-minute secure (i.e., SSL3-encripted) questionnaire. Questions use numeric scales (e.g., 1=never, 5=always) and are easy to answer.
STEP 2. Once you registered the project and its team members, we send an invitation to team members who then only have to answer the questionnaire by referring specifically to the project they are registered to. There is a consent form as well.
Soon after you and others complete the questionnaire, your team will receive its feedback report.
This research has been approved by an anonymous committee of peers and abides to the highest scientific standards in the field of the social sciences. The research protocol also received approval from the university's ethics committee (Certificate #2009-A-168).
If you are concerned with the validity of this invitation, please do not hesitate to contact me (see signature below) and/or visit the study's web site.
Please use the following link to register your team and complete the questionnaire.
https://www.surveymk.com/s/AJVAFMC
To avoid having your teammates register your project again, do not send them this link. They will receive a different link that only contains the questionnaire.

Research Fellowships in Innovation for Sustainability
The Center for Contemporary History and Policy at the Chemical Heritage Foundation invites applications for one-year research fellowships at the post-doctoral or advanced graduate student level to create and cultivate projects in the area of innovation for sustainability. We anticipate hiring 2-3 individuals for these positions.
Drawing on core competencies and programmatic areas in environmental history and policy and studies of materials innovation, CCHP is developing projects that sit at the intersection of sustainability and innovation, both broadly construed. We especially encourage project proposals that cut across institutional sectors and research objects. The following are examples of topics that might be explored:
· Materials Innovation
· Energy (policy, regulation)
· Role of government regulation
· Green manufacturing
· Life-Cycle assessments
· Alternatives development
· Green Chemistry
Projects conducted by fellows in residence will contribute to the programmatic and outreach initiatives of CCHP. These materials are intended to reach audiences outside of academe, and in the past have included: white papers, online exhibits, public symposia, and contributions to our oral history collection.
Fellows will work with CCHP staff while in residence to determine the most appropriate project outcomes as part of our efforts to mentor and train junior scholars to reach new and diverse audiences.
In addition to research related to the proposed project, approximately a third of the fellow's time will be in support of ongoing activities and projects in CCHP.
Salary for post-doctoral researchers will be $45,000; graduate students will receive $25,000.
Applications from women, minorities, and those with disabilities are particularly welcomed and encouraged.
