Research in management revolves around firms & markets, operating at a macro-meso level, but necessitates assumptions about the behavior of individuals. The Behavioral Strategy workshop at AoM is a forum to deliberate realistic, parsimonious & generalizable theories linking micro-behavior to macro-outcomes in organizations & markets. Back for the second year, it features an expanded panel of top scholars in the broad research area of behavioral strategy.

This PDW focuses on inter-firm contracting research, which has been growing rapidly with several recent publications in top journals. In addition, managers acknowledge that contracting issues are becoming increasingly more important in a globally connected business environment. Despite the wealth of attention, there is still a lot that we do not understand about the inter-firm contracting. Thus, the primary goal of the workshop is to provide a forum for scholars who are currently studying inter-firm contracts to engage in a dialogue about current and future research opportunities.
Date: Saturday, August 13, 2011
Time: 3:30 - 6:00 PM
Location: San Antonio Convention Center, Room 212B
Organizers: Jason Pattit (University of St. Thomas) and Valérie Duplat (EDHEC Business School)
Presenters: Kyle J. Mayer (University of Southern California), Michael J. Leiblein (The Ohio State University), Bart Vanneste (INSEAD), Fabrice Lumineau (University of Technology Sydney), Valérie Duplat (EDHEC Business School) and Jason Pattit (University of St. Thomas)
This PDW also provides an opportunity for scholars who are not currently conducting research on inter-firm contracts to obtain an overview of the field and to join in the discussion.
The workshop will consist of two parts. The first part of the workshop, which will be open to all academy members, will feature presentations by scholars who have published their research on inter-firm contracting in the top strategy and management journals. Five key research questions identified by Weber, Mayer and Wu (2009) will be addressed by the presenters: How do transaction characteristics impact contract design? How do contract design elements influence transaction success or partner relationships? How do transactions or exchange relationships influence firm performance? How does a prior relationship or transaction impact the design of subsequent contracts with the same firm? How does contract design influence firm performance?
The second part of the PDW will be a paper development workshop. Attendees who would like to participate in the paper development workshop should pre-register and submit an outline or brief summary of their research. A maximum of 30 submissions will be accepted. In small groups, the registrants will then discuss their own research in a roundtable setting and receive feedback from top scholars who are actively engaged in research on inter-firm contracts. Attendees without a submission will be invited to stay and take part in the discussions and the Q&A at the end of the workshop.
Please put this session on your calendar. As the organizers of the session, our objective is to have an engaging session that will bring to light many exciting new questions that can be examined about inter-firm contracting. If you are interested in participating in the paper development workshop in the second half of the session, please be sure to pre-register by August 10, 2011: https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg.
For any questions you have about the PDW or to receive the code to submit your outline/summary, please contact Jason Pattit (jmpattit@ssthomas.edu).
See you in San Antonio!

Creating a Global Network of Design Thinkers, Design Thinking
| Organizer: Katharina Hoelzle; U. of Potsdam; Facilitator: Jochen Schweitzer; U. of Technology, Sydney; Organizer: Niels Billou; U. of Western Ontario; Organizer: Ulrich Weinberg; Hasso Plattner Institute; Facilitator: Claudia Nicolai; Hasso Plattner Institute; Facilitator: Thomas Both; Stanford U.; Design Thinking has over the last years received increasing awareness and popularity among researchers and practitioners alike. By combining approaches found in design and ethnography with technology and business skills found in strategic and innovation management, it offers a third way for problem solving and idea generation. The past and current economic situation has taught us that the world needs fresh ideas and new perspectives which can only be achieved by thinking in broad and integrative ways (Chen and Miller, 2010). To achieve divergent thinking, it is mandatory to have a diverse group of people involved. Design Thinking relies on diversity and apparent opposites, on combining seemingly contradictory traits as expertise versus empathy or focused versus open mindsets – creating so called "T-shaped" persons. Design Thinking is currently being taught and integrated in academic and executive curricula worldwide: the d.school at Stanford University, the Rotman School in Toronto, the HPI School of Design Thinking at Potsdam, Germany, d.thinking Paris in France, or the i.school in Tokyo, Japan to name only a few. Moreover, the HPI School of Design Thinking is actively supporting activities at Design City Kolding, Denmark, the Moscow State University Russia, the Design factory at the Aalto University Helsinki, the Communication University of China, Beijing and initiatives in India and South Korea in order to establish Design Thinking institutions in academia. Based on the success of last year's PDW where 35 people from 15 different nationalities, ranging from East to West, joined, we want to open up the space and start building a global network of Design Thinkers. We will on the one hand generate a hands-on classroom experience for the participants in order to expose them to the basic principles of Design Thinking and how to apply them in their respective environment. We will create an atmosphere of mutual learning and sharing in order to solve individual, corporate, or societal problems. Taking part in this workshop, the participants experience a complete Design Thinking cycle: empathy by observation, project definition, prototyping, soliciting feedback, and iterating. An international faculty will guide participants through each stage of the process and provide insights on how to apply and teach Design Thinking to everyday work processes and problem solutions. On the other hand, the facilitators will give different views and approaches of Design Thinking in academia, industry, and consultancy. Attendance is limited to 40 people. Please send us an email with a short CV and your motivation to attend this workshop to aomregistration2011@hpi.uni-potsdam.de before July, 31st 2011. | Search Terms: | Design Thinking , Innovation , Education | Katharina Hoelzle Prof. Dr. Katharina Hoelzle, MBA University of Potsdam Chair for Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship August-Bebel-Str. 89 14482 Potsdam Tel. +49-331-977 3317 katharina.hoelzle@uni-potsdam.de |

Interested in innovation and organisation theory?
Then join us for the caucus at the annual meeting of AOM 2011:
"In search for theory: What hampers innovation?"
Tuesday, Aug 16 2011, from 11:30AM to 1:00PM at the Hilton Palacio del Rio in the La Duquesa South room
A variety of disciplines provides empirical evidence about factors which impede, delay or even block innovation, so-called barriers.
However, those studies are characterized by a lack of theoretical foundation. We invite researchers to focus on this void: Which theories could/can explain the occurrence of barriers and how could they contribute to barrier research?
What hampers innovation? The question is answered by various researchers from multiples disciplines with varying theoretical background and empirical experience. They provide empirical evidence of multiple factors which impede, delay or even block innovation, so-called barriers. We conducted a systematic review of more than one-hundred empirical studies on barriers. Two major findings of the analysis are: (1) a lack of scholarly discussion, and (2) a lack of theoretical foundation.
Background:
The citation analysis of one-hundred empirical studies on barriers indicated a lack of scholarly discussion between the barriers researchers. Therefore, the AOM PDWs 2009 and 2010 brought researchers on barriers together to discuss the state of the art and future empirical and theoretical challenges of barrier research. The aim was to enhance scholarly discussion and cross-fertilization. Roundtable discussion focused on barriers to organizational and technological change. The discussion raised theoretical and methodological questions how to identify, measure and overcome barriers. Based on multi-level analysis (Klein & Kozlowski, 2000) the discussion was differentiated according different level of analysis: individual, group, organization and external environment.
The PDWs confirmed the results of the systematic review of empirical studies on barriers: There is a lack of theory to explain the occurrence of barriers to innovation. Therefore, we decided to organize a caucus, which is devoted to barriers and theory.
Caucus:
The caucus will be informal and open to all, but will have some structure. Depending on who attends, we will organize people by the level of analysis of their research focus: individual, group, organization or environment. They will discuss which theories from psychology, sociology, economics etc. are suitable to contribute to a theoretical explanation of the occurrence of barriers to innovation.
They will share these insights with the large group and together, we will identify the contribution of each theory to the barrier research.
Time + location:
Tuesday, Aug 16 2011, from 11:30AM to 1:00PM at the Hilton Palacio del Rio in the La Duquesa South room
Any further questions: Please don't hesitate to contaxt us:
ema@mailbox.tu-dresden.de.
Please feel free to invite other colleagues intrigued by research on innovation, organization theory and barrier research.
We are looking forward to meeting you and discussing with you!
Best regards,
Edeltraud Guenther and Anne-Karen Hueske

IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management
Special Issue Call for Papers "Engineering Management and Sustainability"
IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management is sponsoring a special issue on sustainable technology and engineering management research and practice. Submissions due by 15 July.
Over the past three decades, the topic of sustainability has generated considerable attention in society. Environmental and social concerns intertwined with economic development make sustainability a complex issue for nations, industries, and communities. These dimensions of sustainability go beyond the past or current study of organizations, but require consideration of inter-generational and inter-organizational issues. According to The World Business Council for Sustainable Development, organizations need to be able to meet the requirements of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Thus, a balance of the 'triple-bottom-line' of social, environmental and economic issues along with concerns for future generations, are important characteristics of sustainability.
Sustainability has traditionally placed limits on organizations. More recently, it has become a source of inspiration and innovation. Organizations have initiated efforts to design their business models on the basis of sustainability. Sustainability and sustainable practices have become critical concerns for engineering managers within organizations. A variety of internal and external issues related to sustainability have emerged as important. Health, safety, and security of workers are examples of social dimensions that need to be managed internally. Product and process design for environment, environmental management system implementation and monitoring, green technology and innovation management and investment, are examples of internal environmental concerns facing managers. Externally, managers need to help their organizations to develop and build community ties, contribute to various social programs, manage in an evolving green technology policy environment, and maintain ethical practices in emerging and developing nations. Sustainability, therefore, requires new expertise and new skills in organizing, collaborating and communicating – both internally and externally. These examples illustrate the aspects requiring engineering management education and knowledge development. The scope of this call for papers is necessarily broad to provide flexibility to researchers for developing topics and manuscripts on this evolving and emergent topic.
The following is a list of comprehensive, but not necessarily exhaustive, set of topics:
1. Management of green technology including technology transfer and diffusion of green technology within and across companies and industries.
2. Collaborative innovation for sustainability (partnerships between academia, governments, and private industry). How should organizations advance on the "innovation ladder" from simple, one-dimensional innovation to complex, societal innovations?
3. Innovation as a 'co-evolutionary route.' How do you prepare an organization for such a route? How can organizations build relevant competencies?
4. Sustainable and closed-loop supply chain management.
5. Design for the Environment (eco-design) and Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C) efforts.
6. Ecological modernization at the social and organizational level; the role of innovation in response to regulatory policy.
7. Training and integration of engineers and staff on sustainability topics.
8. Integrating life-cycle analysis into organizational projects.
9. Management of corporate social responsibility (CSR) systems (e.g. environmental, safety, health and management systems such as ISO 14000 and ISO 26000) and their dovetailing relationship to sustainability.
We invite high-quality modeling and empirical study approaches for advancing sustainability research in these and other IEEE-TEM topics. Analytical, Economic, Quantitative tools and methodological developments are all welcome. We will also invite conceptual review papers that provide a broader understanding and contribution to theory and practice. We also welcome Focus on Practice articles intended to directly impact practice in the area of sustainability. Thus, normative, descriptive, and empirical approaches are all welcome for submission to this special issue. Accepted papers are expected to be within the scope of the IEEE TEM. Authors are referred to the home page http://www.umsl.edu/~ieee-tem/ All manuscripts will be double-blind reviewed by at least two reviewers. Papers will be evaluated based on scientific quality, considering rigor, scientific novelty and scientific contribution.
Potential contributors with questions can contact any of the editors of this special issue. The deadline for submissions of the completed manuscripts is July 15, 2011. The complete anticipated schedule for the special issue is:
July 15, 2011: Deadline for submission of complete manuscript
