    Announcements – AOM 2011

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Apologies for cross-postings.

We would like to invite you the following symposium:
The Emergence of the Cleantech Sector: Institutional Actors, Innovation, and Adoption (TIM, ONE, ENT) Scheduled: Tuesday, Aug 16 2011 9:45AM - 11:15AM at San Antonio Convention Center in Room 006 D

"Cleantech" is an umbrella term that has been used for industries that focus on different technologies offering products and services with minimal to no damage to the environment. Over the past decade, a convergence of institutional, political, and technological forces that include growing environmental concerns, refocused public attention on oil dependence, and breakthrough innovations in clean energy systems, have brought clean technologies to the cusp of radically transforming existing industries with energy at the center stage. In its present state, the Cleantech sector represents a fascinating exemplar of a nascent industry – the tracing of whose development can enable us to develop a deeper understanding of how new industrial sectors based on innovative technologies emerge. In this symposium, we showcase four research projects that highlight the significant role played by different institutional actors – regulators and policy makers, customers, and private investors – in the early stages of sector emergence. In designing this symposium, our intent is to showcase the emerging Cleantech sector as a fruitful context to build and extend theories that span the innovation, institutions, entrepreneurship, and organizations domains as well as encourage greater collaboration among researchers who are interested in this nascent industry.

Why We All Should Be Bayesians: Opportunities of Bayesian Statistics for Management Research

    Friday, August 12, 2011 at 2:45 PM – 5:15 PM
San Antonio Convention Center, Room 202-B
Academy of Management Conference in San Antonio, Texas

William H. Starbuck, University of Oregon
Joern H. Block, Technical University Munich

    Miguel Sousa Lobo, INSEAD

Ehsanola S. Soofi, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

    Andreas Schwab, Iowa State University

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce management researchers to the opportunities of Bayesian statistics for empirical research in the management sciences. We will outline the fundamental features of the Bayesian method without delving into the mathematical details. Instead, we will first outline the conceptual differences and potential advantages of a Bayesian approach compared to traditional statistical analyses involving null-hypothesis significance tests (NHSTs). We will then show examples from empirical management research that illustrates Bayesian data analysis. These examples will also introduce alternative software solutions that are available to implement Bayesian analyses. Finally, we will discuss why in spite of strong arguments supporting the use of Bayesian statistics, the field of management research has been very reluctant considering Bayesian analysis as an alternative. The purpose of this workshop is to convince participants of the potential opportunities Bayesian methods can provide and to enable organizational researchers to apply these methods in future research.

No pre-registration is required to attend this workshop.

    Strategic Human Capital

We enthusiastically invite you to attend the professional development workshop "Strategic Human Capital: Origins of and Prospects for a New Construct in Strategic Management."

Friday, August 12, at 8am in the San Antonio Convention Center, Room 006D

For planning purposes we would appreciate it if you would RSVP for this event. Please click on this link to do so

The field of strategic management has increasingly recognized the need to address "microfoundations" of competitive advantage. The "pendulum" of strategic management research is swinging rapidly toward the level of the individual as a key independent variable to explain competitive advantage (Abell, Felin, & Foss, 2008; Felin & Foss, 2005; Hoskisson, Hitt, Wan, & Yiu, 1999). The purpose of this professional development workshop is to identify the key issues that need to be addressed to advance the construct of strategic human capital. This PDW promises exciting opportunities for researchers across several research domains: human resources, strategic management, organizational behavior, technology and innovation management, entrepreneurship, management education and development, and organizational theory.

    Why should you attend?

    ·                     See presentations on unique, multi-disciplinary research perspectives related to the construct of strategic human capital

    ·                     Participate in round-table discussions with panelists focused on generating cutting-edge research questions and studies on strategic human capital

    ·                     Enjoy an executive breakfast generously provided by Michigan State University's School of Human Resource and Labor Relations.

Please join me and our esteemed panelists, Russell Coff; U. of Wisconsin, Madison; Janice C. Molloy; Michigan State U.; Mark Shanley; U. of Illinois, Chicago; Paul Drnevich; U. of Alabama; and William S Hesterly; U. of Utah, in this workshop. on Friday, August 12, at 8am in the San Antonio Convention Center, Room 006D.

For planning purposes we would appreciate it if you would RSVP for this event. Please click on this link to do so

A detailed description of this PDW appears in the program at http://program.aomonline.org/2011/submission.asp?mode=ShowSession&SessionID=921. I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio!

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    --------------------------------------------------------

    apologies for cross-posting

Participatory Innovation Conference 2012, Melbourne, Australia, January 12-14, 2012, Submit Abstracts and Intent to Participate by 5 August 2011

Swinburne University Faculty of Design in collaboration with SPIRE, University of Southern Denmark is proud to host the 2012 Participatory Innovation Conference. This is a forum where participants from different disciplines and organisations can meet and challenge each other to develop the field of participatory innovation. It will be held in Melbourne, Australia from 12-14 January 2012.

    What is Participatory Innovation?

Participatory Innovation combines theories and methods across academic fields that describe how people outside an organisation can contribute to its innovation. Join this conference to help identify ways for industry, the public sector, and communities to expand innovation through the participation of users, employees, suppliers, citizens, members, etc. – on a strategic level, in concrete methods, and in day-to-day interactions. Industry, public agencies, and communities increasingly adopt people-driven and open innovation, as they realise that innovation cannot come solely from within an organisation. Innovation happens in the 'breaking of the waves' between people outside and people inside – because they have different stakes and perspectives. In academia, new breakthrough contributions to understanding and supporting innovation also emerge in the borderlands between disciplines that traditionally do not collaborate (ex. between indigenous knowledge and design, or between management and anthropology).

    Call for Extended Abstracts:

We are currently seeking extended abstracts (approximately 750 words, not including bibliography) for double-blind peer review addressing one of the five conference tracks:

    - Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Innovation,

    - Evolving Design Anthropology,

    - Making Design and Analysing Interaction,

    - Organising Participatory Innovation, and

    - Designing Innovative Business Models.

Each of the tracks supports a unique combination of disciplines and offers an engaging way to participate. Practitioners are encouraged to submit cases that researchers can react to at the conference. More information on tracks can be found on the conference website: http://www.pin-c2012.org

    Deadlines (Australian time):

    - Abstracts and intents to participate: August 5th

    - Notice of Acceptance: September 5th

    - Full papers: October 14th

    - Final submissions: November 18th

For questions please contact conference co-chairs:

Elizabeth (Dori) Tunstall, Swinburne Faculty of Design (etunstall@swin.edu.au<mailto:etunstall@swin.edu.au>) and Jacob Buur, SPIRE, Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark

    Brief Conference Track Descriptions:

Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Innovation How can indigenous communities use their high level of cultural wellness to design futures that reduce their social and economic vulnerability? How can indigenous ways of knowing reframe the understanding of participation? This track brings into dialogue participants from indigenous communities, futuring, and design to explore the processes of cultural innovation.

    Track chairs:

Associate Professor Pi'ikea Clark, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi Associate Professor, Bo Zhou, Chinese Central Academy for Fine Arts

    Evolving Design Anthropology

Design and Anthropology often engage at the level of designing for human cognitive and emotional needs and desires. But what about the spiritual, which completes holistic human existence? This track seeks participants who are interested in grappling with how design anthropology can evolve to also address the underlying values systems of organisations and the translation of those values into tangible experiences for negotiation among multiple stakeholders.

    Track chairs:

Associate Dean Elizabeth Tunstall, Faculty of Design, Swinburne University Associate Professor Wendy Gunn, SPIRE, University of Southern Denmark

    Making Design and Analysing Interaction

Physical 'stuff' like generative toolkits, tinkering and provotypes has proven highly valuable in encouraging people with different backgrounds to collaborate. But why and how does it work? This track brings together 'makers' of design collaboration with interaction analysts, who can explain what actually happens.

    Track chairs:

Senior Research Fellow Carolyn Barnes, Faculty of Design, Swinburne University Associate Professor Trine Heinemann, SPIRE, University of Southern Denmark

    Organising Participatory Innovation

Involving users and other stakeholders in innovation poses serious challenges to management. Organisations hesitate to admit external voices into internal conversations. This track brings together practitioners and researchers to develop a deeper understanding of 'organising' participatory processes that lead to novel solutions. A particular challenge is participation in public-private partnerships.

    Track chairs:

Dean and Distinguished Professor, Ken Friedman, Faculty of Design, Swinburne University Professor Henry Larsen, SPIRE, University of Southern Denmark

    Designing Innovative Business Models

There are already several examples in academia of widening the circle of participants when discussing how to innovate business models. In this track practitioners, designers and business experts come together to create new ways of innovating business models with user participation – by moving business model discussions beyond marketing into the realm of interaction design!

    Track chairs:

Professor Eddie Blass, Faculty of Business & Enterprise, Swinburne University Professor Jacob Buur, SPIRE, University of Southern Denmark

About Swinburne Faculty of Design and SPIRE:

Swinburne University Faculty of Design has more than a century of history. It focuses on the value adding benefits of design and design research to people, the environment, industry and the economy.

SPIRE is the newest research centre at the Mads Clausen Institute. It is concerned with research in participatory innovation in collaboration with social scientists, human scientists, local industry and the theatre group Dacapo.
