    Apologies for double posting

    Dear colleagues:

I would like to share with you information about a site visit organized with the IM division that should be of interest to members of BPS, TIM, ENT and OMT as well. I've been working with Scuderi for 3 years now and it's a very fascinating company (www.scuderigroup.com), so the trip to their partner R&D lab should be exciting - there are still some places left and it would be a shame not to fill them!

Please see the following information from IMD Newsletter:

Visit to South West Research, San Antonio, & Scuderi Group Research Collaboration

The IM Division Outreach Committee is pleased to announce the following exciting opportunity: Visit of South West Research Institute, San Antonio & Scuderi Group research collaboration, as an off-site activity.

Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2011 Time: Depart at 1:40pm and return before 4:45pm Meeting place: Central Lobby of the San Antonio Convention Center Cost: US$12.00 per participant (for the bus transfer) to be paid in cash before departure Registration: Email event organizer, Cordula Barzantny at c.barzantny@esc-toulouse.fr, and please include passport information (e.g. a scan) because there is classified activity happening around our visit. You will receive an official confirmation following your registration.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the oldest and largest independent, nonprofit, applied research and development (R&D) organizations in the United States. Founded in 1947, SwRI provides contract research and development services to industrial and government clients in the United States and abroad (www.swri.org).

This offers an exceptional opportunity to learn about international networks of technological innovation for the case of the Scuderi Group and also meet a Scuderi family member, a partner of SwRI for alternative combustion engines. The Scuderi Group is a very fascinating 20 person, family-business engine technology company based in the US with an office in Frankfurt, Germany, Nagoya, Japan and world-wide collaborations. They developed an alternative (combustion) engine based on their father's concept (who developed the CFC-free fridge) together with SwRI and some MNCs like Bosch, Mahle, Exceldyne and others. They already have a few hundred patents and are looking for first licensees before they go public. In terms of financing, they used family, friends and family offices to collect $85m - being pre-revenue. The company has recently been covered in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes and many other publications.

PS. Since space is limited, we take reservations on a first-come, first-served basis and request that you advice us - even at very short notice – if you cannot honor this visit in the last minute despite your registration at c.barzantny@esc-toulouse.fr.

Hope see many of you on this trip and look forward to meeting you in San Antonio,

    Florian

Don't Miss these Events Even if you are Vaguely Interested in South Asia

If you are conducting research or are interested in conducting research in South Asia- or just want to explore the opportunity of collaborating with researchers and practitioners focused on South Asia, please attend all or some of the following events.

South Asia is home to more than 1/5th of the world's population, and considered one of the fastest growing economies in the world. According to the World Bank, South Asia comprises of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Such a diverse mix of countries presents a plethora of cutting-edge business and management issues, including rise of third-world multinationals and frugal innovation as well as a hotbed of several challenges that the region faces in terms of population growth, corruption and cronyism.

We are highlighting the prominence of the South Asian region by hosting the following events:

    1.  Meet the Editor of the South Asian Journal of Global Business Research (SAJGBR)

SAJGBR is the only journal dedicated to advancing theoretical and empirical knowledge of business and management issues facing multinational and local organizations within South Asia. Here you will meet the Editor-in-Chief face to face and get to ask her questions about publishing for SAJGBR. She will also talk about the Editorial Objectives, Editorial Criteria, Scope of the Journal and discuss why you should publish in SAJGBR.

SAJGBR is published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Saturday, Aug 13, 2011: 2pm-4pm at the San Antonio Convention Center, Room 206A

    2.  Official Launch of the South Asian Academy of Management (SAAM) and Celebration of the Partnership between SAJGBR and SAAM at a breakfast networking event

Tues, Aug 16, 2011: 7am, San Antonio Convention Center, 210B

    3. East Meets West Symposium- A South Asian Perspective on Management and Theories

In this Symposium, organizers and panelists take the lead from Cappelli et al's (2010) argument that American corporations need to look outside the U.S., in particular India, in order to incorporate new ways of thinking into their management practices and to guarantee success in today's intensely competitive environment, Hence, through this Symposium they encourage exploration of fresh and indigenous ideas and perspectives on managing organizations in South Asia. The emphasis is on critically examining the relevance of the mainstream (Western) management theories and practices in the South Asian cultural and institutional context, and reviewing the existing practices there with the objective of preparing an early groundwork for the formulation and propagation of new theories, concepts, and models with greater explanatory power than the existing management theories. They argue that this is relevant for addressing the complex management problems encountered by organizations in the U.S., South Asia and elsewhere; and critical for developing innovative approaches to managing organizations globally (Christie, 2010).

Papers included in this Symposium offer fresh, original and insightful perspectives in the management of organizations within contemporary South Asia.

    Panelists include:

Shehla Riza Arifeen, Lahore School of Economics, Pakistan

Yasser Ahmad Bhatti, University of Oxford, UK

Naresh Khatri, University of Missouri, USA

Shaista E. Khilji, George Washington University, USA

Ujvala Arun Rajadhyaksha, Saint Mary's College, USA

Jawad Syed, University of Kent, UK

Please RSVP to Candice Matthews at: cmatthew@gwmail.gwu.edu by Monday, August 8th. Due to limited seating at the breakfast networking event and the SAJGBR and SAAM launch, RSVP is mandatory. Seating is offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Workshop Report now available: National Science Foundation Workshop on Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Innovative Science and Engineering Fields

Science policymakers have increased funding for interdisciplinary collaboration as a favored mode of 'translational' and/or 'transformative' research. With the rise in interdisciplinary funding for science and engineering has come the analysis of interdisciplinarity itself, finding that interdisciplinary collaboration brings with it a variety of problems as well as promises of innovation. Ironically, although researchers from a host of disciplines have studied interdisciplinarity, there has been minimal communication across disciplinary boundaries.

In order to address these issues, a two-day National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored workshop titled 'Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Innovative Science and Engineering Fields' was held in November 2010. In total, 37 researchers representing such diverse disciplines as economics, psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, political science and public policy, anthropology, history, philosophy, gender studies, other sciences (biology, physics), and science and technology studies attended. Together, these scholars discussed the state of the study of interdisciplinarity in their individual disciplines and the barriers and opportunities facing the study of interdisciplinary collaboration. While these scholars did not agree on all issues, including the definition of interdisciplinarity itself, the workshop accomplished its goal of the cross-fertilization of ideas while engaging and informing a diverse group of researchers.

This workshop and its report are but a starting point for further conversation and research. Given that many members of this listserve also study interdisciplinarity and/or collaboration, we feel that dissemination of the final report is important. Please find the full workshop at: https://sites.google.com/site/interdisciplinary2010/

We hope that it serves as a useful resource for you.

    Best regards,

    Dear AoM Colleagues,

I'd like to call your attention to a brand-new program at NSF called I-CORPS – designed to support initial steps towards commercialization of NSF-funded research.  I-CORPS grants offer $50,000 over six months and focus on prospective entrepreneurship, involving a small team.  The program also includes intensive instruction from Stanford's "Lean Launch Pad" program, originally developed as an entrepreneurship experience for engineering graduate students.

I-CORPS is a great opportunity to collaborate across different schools at universities that combine research and entrepreneurship.  The principal investigator MUST have a current NSF grant (or have had one within the past five years) but the other team members can be students or University community members.  All areas of NSF-funded research (including commercializable aspects of social, behavioral, and economic sciences) are eligible.

The submission window is both short and coming up fast – August 17 to September 9, with grants to begin immediately in Fall 2011.  A maximum of twenty-five teams will be funded in the first cohort.

For more information, please refer to the fact sheet and the FAQ at http://www.nsf.gov/i-corps; there will be a webinar on August 2 with more information as well.

I'd be glad to talk about the proposal process more at the Academy meetings in San Antonio, including before and after the scheduled PDWs on NSF Funding and Data Resources on Saturday afternoon (1:30-3:30 and 3:45 -5:45 pm, respectively) in SACC 201.

Symposium Title: Innovation and Organizational Responses to Sustainability: An Institutional Perspective

    Monday, Aug 15 2011 3:00PM - 4:30PM at San Antonio Convention Center in Room 206 B

Devising innovative solutions to the environmental challenges facing the world is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Organizations are increasingly turning to new technologies as a path to a sustainable future, yet this path is fraught with a host of challenges beyond the mere effectiveness of the technology itself. In order for innovations to solve problems, they must be widely diffused and implemented as intended. However, new technologies are often not well understood, or valued. In some instances they may even be perceived as illegitimate or socially unacceptable. Furthermore, new technologies often confront regulatory obstacles and opposition from incumbents and other stakeholders. This symposium compiles a set of diverse, yet, related papers that address a variety of processes and mechanisms by which sustainable technologies and practices can emerge, spread, and become part of the taken-for-granted landscape of the broader global economy. Our hope is that this symposium will generate greater interest in the institutional context when examining business and the environment topics such as clean technology, climate change, and corporate sustainability.

    Organization Science Winter Conference XVIII

    February 9 - 12, 2012

    Formal Organizations Meet Social Networking

We are very pleased to announce the Eighteenth Annual Organization Science Winter Conference (OSWCXVIII).

OSWC-XVIII is sponsored by Organization Science in order to stimulate knowledge about organizations through experimentation and boundary-crossing conversation. It combines the leading-edge ideas of strategy and organization scholars, executives, entrepreneurs, and interested non-business scholars, in a community-enhancing

setting. The time and place are February 9 - 12, 2012 at the Sheraton Steamboat Hotel and Conference Center, Steamboat Springs Colorado.

The core theme revolves around the intersection of Formal Organizations and Social Networks. Specifically, how will formal organizations deal with and adapt to the next generation of employees who have grown up embedded in large-scale, ICT-enabled social networks? What will be the impact on organization structures, decision making, organization culture, routines, etc. when self organizing processes substitute for traditional top down by the book management?

There is a growing body of research and practice that touches on the proposed theme. Virtual organizations is an umbrella concept that encompasses research on groups of individuals whose members and resources may be distributed geographically and structurally who function as a coherent unit though the utilization of collaborative technologies. Virtual organizations include distributed workgroups, virtual teams, online communities or collaboratories. Virtual organizations often organize around flexible and resilient structures in contrast to predetermined hierarchical structures. The new reality facing today's managers is the need to not only understand virtual organizations but also to envision how to transform hierarchical organizations to function as an internal social network.. The early drivers involve the recognition that it is becoming increasingly rare that employees in the same department or unit work in a single location. Employees working together across different locations require special

coordination routines, expertise and problem solving capabilities. This trend to more virtual distributed structures in business organizations is now being joined by companies implementing social networking structures and processes in part as a response to pressure from new entrants steeped in social networking. This is likely to require adopting processes for searching information and arriving at decisions that are outcomes of self organizing processes more akin to interactions in social networks.

In recent years experience has accumulated with online communities and large-scale, ICTenabled social networks operating outside the boundaries of formal organizations.

As a practical matter, some formal organizations found it necessary to find an accommodation with, for example, open source software communities. Companies have had to address questions of customer defection, loss of control over intellectual property, employee contribution to these efforts, etc. Organization science scholars have studied open source software communities and the movement of innovative activity to the edges of organizations and into communities. .

Since the first social networking site opened its doors in 1999, usage of these communities for social interaction has skyrocketed. Increasingly, companies are experimenting with social networking for internal knowledge sharing.

Especially interesting are leading edge companies which have implemented companywide social networking tools such as Chatter (by salesforce.com). Dell for example has released Chatter to its entire workforce of over 100K employees. Turner Broadcasting is in the process of implementing another social networking tool throughout the organization. Similarly Cisco has also such an initiative underway involving a new model, the Dynamic Networked Organization (DNO). All three companies claim that they had to leapfrog into this "new world" in response to

pressure from new employees. Undoubtedly these companies and other early adopters

experience many instances of unanticipated outcomes and discover daily challenges affecting middle and senior managers as they adjust to an emerging managerial practice anchored in the self organizing processes of intra social networks.

It is all together clear that the phenomenon involving the intersection of the formal organization and social networking is underway with major implications for interdisciplinary organization science scholarship.

In the tradition of OSWC, we invite 2-3 page proposals for plenary panels and interactive poster papers on the theme of the conference. If you are interested in attending OSWC-XVIII but not as participant on the program please submit a statement expressing your desire to participate and describing your interest in the intersection of formal organizations and social networking.

The application deadline for proposals or individual applications to attend is November 4, 2011.

As has been the case in the past, much of the plenary program is created from proposals and suggestions received from scholars wishing to participate in OSWC. Most authors will be invited to join another highly acclaimed OSWC tradition-the open-ended evening-long (7–10pm) Interactive Poster Sessions accompanied with finger food, wine, soft drinks and desserts.

Historically, 50% of the OSWC attendee roster is reserved for participants new to the conference. Invitations to attend will be extended by the program committee for OSWC-XVIII, Janet Fulk, Arie Lewin, Lee Sproull and Tony O'Driscoll. Panel proposals, posters and statement of interest in participation should be uploaded to the submission website at https://www.fuquaworld.duke.edu/open/fsc/OrgSciConfForm.html.

Individuals having substantive questions are invited to contact the program co-chairs for OSWCXVIII:Janet Fulk (fulk@usc.edu); Arie Lewin (ayl3@duke.edu); Tony O'Driscoll (to15@duke.edu); or Lee Sproull (lsproull@stern.nyu.edu).

The co-conveners of OSWC XVIII are Professor Dan Levinthal (Levinthal@wharton.upenn.edu), Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and Professor

    Special issue of Technovation

Honoring the life's work of Bruce Kirchhoff

    Submission deadline: December 1, 2011

Guest editor: Scott Newbert, Villanova University

Bruce A. Kirchhoff, Ph.D., one of the entrepreneurship field's true pioneers, passed away on May 1, 2011 at the age of 73.  Bruce served as distinguished professor of entrepreneurship and Director of the Technological Entrepreneurship Program at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).  Over the course of his decades-long academic career, Bruce published more than 100 articles on entrepreneurship, economic development, and strategy in a variety of academic journals, books, trade publications, and popular media and was cited by Inc. magazine as one of the top 16 entrepreneurship researchers in the United States.

Prior to joining NJIT, Bruce served on the faculties of Babson College, California Polytechnic State University, Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Jönköping International Business School of Sweden, Purdue University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and the University of Utah.  Bruce also served the profession as a founding member of the Entrepreneurship Research Consortium, which conducted the first Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED I), and as president and executive vice president of the International Council for Small Business. Bruce's success as a scholar was due in no small part to his vast professional experience, which included service as Chief Economist and President of the USA office for the United States Small Business Administration, Assistant Director of the Minority Business Development Agency in the United States Department of Commerce, an economic development consultant with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Peru and Guatemala and with the Peace Corps in Moldova, as well as founder of two successful technology businesses.  In total, Bruce consulted for more than 200 small businesses throughout the Americas, earning six awards for excellence in small business consulting from the United States Small Business Association. Bruce was also instrumental in developing the highly acclaimed Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program, which have been among the most influential US government policies for facilitating research and development in small, high-technology firms.

As a scholar, Bruce spent his career researching how new and small independently-owned firms contribute to job creation and wealth redistribution.  He referred to this process as "dynamic capitalism" in order to reflect the changing nature of the business community (Kirchhoff, 1994).  Bruce held a largely Austrian view of economics, arguing against the general equilibrium model and in favor of Schumpeter's view of capitalism as a cyclical process of creative destruction (Kirchhoff, 1991) for which he found compelling empirical evidence to support (Kirchhoff, 1989).  Bruce further believed that among entrepreneurial firms, those that sought to exploit disruptive technologies (either through basic research or via technology transfer partnerships) had the greatest effect on economic development and growth.  As a result, Bruce was a strong advocate for government policy that facilitated new firm entry in general (Kirchhoff and Phillips, 1988) and high-tech new firm entry in particular (Kirchhoff et al., 2007; Romig et al., 2007).

In the spirit of Bruce Kirchhoff's scholarly achievements, this special issue seeks manuscripts that focus on the intersection of entrepreneurship, technology, and economic development and growth. As it was important to Bruce, it is also important to this special issue that contributions have substantive implications not only for academics seeking to extend theory, but also for both practicing entrepreneurs seeking to build new and/or small organizations and policy-makers interested in promoting the welfare of local and/or national communities. The following is a list of potential topics for the special issue:

Do small firms contribute to economic growth and development in the same way that new firms do?

What role do new/small firms play in the transfer of disruptive technologies?  How can public policy facilitate that commercialization process?

How has the post-recession environment affected new firm births and/or small firm growth?  Are these effects more or less pronounced in high-tech industries and what are the implications of such an effect?

How can public policy promote new firm births and/or small firm growth in general?  How effective are existing programs of this nature?  Does program effectiveness vary by geographic region (i.e., states, nations)?  Upon what additional factors (i.e., institutional environment) is the success of such programs contingent?

Is there a connection between high-tech and high growth entrepreneurial firms?  Does that connection (if it exists) warrant increased public support given the relatively low incidence of high-tech firms?

Does the nature of public support for new and small high-growth firms differ from that required by other types of firms?  What is the optimal mix of public support for new and small firms by firm type?

These are just a sampling of the topics that could be addressed, and submissions on other related topics, provided they draw upon the general research interests of the late Bruce Kirchhoff, are welcome.  Please submit manuscripts to http://ees.elsevier.com/technovation/ by December 1, 2011. Authors should indicate that they would like to the submission to be considered for this special issue by designating the Article Type as "Special Issue: Bruce Kirchhoff Memorial."  Questions regarding any aspect of this special issue may be directed to the guest editor, Scott Newbert, at scott.newbert@villanova.edu.

    Apologies for cross-posting:

    Colleagues-

I would like to invite you to participate in an exciting research project - the Entrepreneurship Education Project (see www.entrepeduc.org for more information).  To date we have collected roughly 15,000 responses from hundreds of universities around the world, which would provide you access to some great data to understand what is happening in entrepreneurship education, how it impacts students' and their career choices and progression, and also access to a wonderful group of like-minded scholars!

I have tried to make this process as easy as possible for you:

I would ask you to complete a short survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ented to gather information about your university.

I would then develop a web-based (or paper-and-pencil if preferable) survey that you can ask students at your university to complete.  We would like you to ask as many students from the following groups to participate: 1) entrepreneurship undergraduate students, 2) business undergraduate students not taking entrepreneurship courses, and 3) non-business undergraduate students

If you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Thank you again for your time, and have a great day!

We are recruiting for multiple Tenure Track and Non-Tenure Track Faculty positions.

Job Description: Karachi School of Business and Leadership (KSBL) Seeks Tenure-Track and Non-Tenure Track Faculty

With support from University of Cambridge's Judge Business School, the Karachi School for Business and Leadership is currently in development and will commence the KSBL MBA in September 2012.

Located in the largest city in Pakistan and the commercial, trade and banking capital of the country, KSBL intends to become the premier business school in the region. More information about KSBL

and KEI can be found on their website: www.KSBL.org.

KSBL is seeking several tenure track faculty members (researchactive), as well as a number of non tenuretrack ones (whose primary responsibility will be teaching) in the areas of Strategy,

Organizational Behaviour, Marketing, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Operations Management and Economics.

Tenure track faculty members will be expected to contribute substantially to research by publishing work of high intellectual standard. In most cases, this will mean that a person appointed to a

tenuretrack teaching position will already have a PhD degree and either an established publication record, or have sufficient work in the pipeline to display clear potential for such a pathway. The

typical teaching load will be highly reasonable.

Research expectations from nontenure track candidates will be lower but they will be expected to contribute to teaching and curriculum development in their respective area and to KSBL Executive

Education programmes. Student project administration and advising are also expected. Up to 20% of work time may be spent on outside work, except, of course, that any such outside

commitments must not interfere with the professor's performance in his/her academic work. There is an entitlement to sabbatical leave, accumulated on the basis of one year's leave for every six years

    in office.

Finally, faculty members will have opportunities to spend time at Cambridge University and to interact with Cambridge faculty.

This is a highly attractive opportunity to be part of an emerging business school, which will soon make its name in the region. The salaries will be globally competitive and faculty members will be

located in a brand new custom built building designed by one of the world's leading architects, William McDonough.

Appointment will be from June 1, 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter. If you are interested, please write to:
