    Session  Description

The objective of this PDW is to offer personal feedback to scholars actively researching the topic of alliance portfolios. We seek to create a highly interactive environment where scholars in different fields, including strategic management, organization theory, and technology management can discuss their recent research on alliance portfolios, debate theoretical and empirical issues, and identify prospective directions for future research. This PDW will be of great interest to those broadly interested in the study of alliances and networks. In particular, the PDW will address themes related to the formation, composition, evolution, management and performance implications of alliance portfolios.

Pre-registration is required for this workshop.

In order to ensure a fruitful discussion we ask interested scholars to upload a 2-page summary of a research project that they would like to discuss in the PDW. These summaries will be later forwarded to the panelists who will be assigned to the round table of that participant. We also ask each registered participant to indicate 3 panelists who in his or her opinion can provide the most relevant feedback on the participant's research based on shared research interests. An effort will be made to ensure that each participant will be assigned with at least one of the panelists that was indicated. The PDW participants will be also able to continue informal discussions in in a follow-up lunch at the La Voile restaurant.

Registration and Submission Instructions – Deadline August 1st

Please complete the form at http://ie.technion.ac.il/AOM2012/AlliancePDW/

    Colleagues,

Are you interested in researching or teaching about clean technology or green product design?

Are you concerned about endocrine-disrupting chemicals and wondering from where cleaner substances will come and how they will move from bench scale discoveries to industrial scale production facilities?

Are you looking for interesting case studies of innovation, commercialization of environmental technologies or eco-preneurship?

Are you looking for interesting case studies of pollution prevention and environmental risk management?

Are you looking for a science-based framework for connecting issues as seemingly disparate as environmental health, climate change and resource efficiency, as well as for understanding the greening of individual firms or entire sectors?

If so, the Professional Development Workshop to be held at the Academy of Management's Annual Meeting in Boston, and described below, will be of interest to you.

    50 Years after Silent Spring:

The Past, Present and Future of the Global Chemical Enterprise

    Friday, August 03, 2012 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM Marriott Copley Place, Salon H

This PDW honors the 50th anniversary of the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring by bringing "toxics" back to the fore of scholarship on organizations and the natural environment. It will introduce "green chemistry" to management scholars; describe its scientific, commercial and regulatory dimensions and place these into historical context; and illustrate green chemistry's central role in innovation for business sustainability.

Participants will explore the potential for interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of business sustainability and industry-scale chemistry by identifying ways to integrate perspectives on green chemistry into their own research and teaching. The PDW aims to develop a community of scholars that is interested in research that uses the chemicals sector as a site for developing knowledge about business sustainability and innovation; and in teaching business students and executives about green chemistry, its role in sustainable development and its importance for corporate environmental strategy.

    Co-organizers:          Steve Maguire (McGill U)

Robert Peoples (American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute)

    Facilitators:               Pratima Bansal (Western U)

    Stephanie Bertels (Simon Fraser U)

    Arthur Daemmrich (Harvard Business School)
    Andrew Hoffman (U Michigan)

    Andrew Nelson (U Oregon)
    Deborah Steketee (Aquinas College)

Who Should Attend: This PDW is designed for management academics with an interest in researching and teaching about sustainable development, corporate environmental strategy and innovation, i.e. scholars from ONE and TIM. It will also be of interest to OMT scholars interested in change in institutional fields; and to BPS scholars interested in the implications of technological and regulatory change on industries and firm strategies. On the pedagogy front, it will have great value for scholars interested in incorporating green chemistry into teaching of courses about business sustainability, corporate environmental strategy, strategies for sustainable development, etc., as it will identify relevant tools and materials (e.g. ppt slides for lectures, case studies, etc.).

    Friends,

    Conference Theme for 2012

The theme for this year's conference is Leadership in the Informal Economy. Consistent with this theme, we focus on informal leadership at the lower rungs of the socio-economic strata. We explore how leadership that emerges from within the base of the economic pyramid (BoP) is associated with successful (or unsuccessful) outcomes of poverty alleviation programs (e.g., microcredit, microenterprise formation, health awareness, education and training, and sanitation). Drawing from stories and information provided by practitioners and research findings from scholars, participants will be challenged to work together to develop frameworks for informal (emergent) leadership in the context of poverty alleviation initiatives. Our goal is to generate a set of knowledge products that will help practitioners and scholars in researching and designing meaningful interventions to improve the success rate of such initiatives. In the process, we will also inform understanding of informal (emergent) leadership.

    Planned Outcomes

The conference outcome is identification of a set of knowledge products that, if produced, would help significantly advance understanding of leadership emerging in the lowest rungs of the socio-economic strata in localized efforts to alleviate conditions of impoverished groups. The outcomes of our learning will be published in an edited volume on Informal Leadership in the Informal Economy (edited by Nagaraj Sivasubramaniam, Kzrysztof Dembek, and Mary Uhl-Bien). The outcomes will also be informative to informal leadership processes more broadly (e.g., in the formal economy). Issues of informal leadership have been largely ignored in leadership research. Our work here aims to rectify this problem by advancing a research and practice agenda on informal leadership of importance paralleling that given to formal leadership in the previous century.

    Format

What's particularly unique (and exciting!) about the conference is the format.  There are no paper presentations- this is not an "Academy before the Academy."  Instead participants (scholars and practitioners) will engage in the design thinking process around the challenge: How might we develop frameworks for thinking about informal (emergent) leadership in the context of poverty alleviation initiatives? The design thinking process has been developed specific to the needs of our conference, and will be led by a professional facilitator, Drew Marshall, who has volunteered his services for this effort.

    Event Details

The conference starts on August 1st afternoon with a moderated panel discussion on the challenge addressed by this conference. Several field/non-governmental organizations will be represented at the conference and will be providing rich case studies of successful and not-so successful initiatives targeted at the base of the economic pyramid to serve as data for the design challenge. The conference registration fees of $55 will be used to meet part of the expenses associated with hosting this conference at Northeastern University. More details and conference schedule will be posted at the NLS web site (http://nls.aomonline.org/)

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Boston, MA on August 1st.
