    General Announcements:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Divisions will be sponsoring a PDW on "Learning to Use Self-Leadership during the Dissertation Process" at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename> in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>.  This PDW will take place on Sunday, August 13, from 8:00-9:50 am in the Singapore Room at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Self-leadership, based on social cognitive and intrinsic motivation theory, can help a person motivate him or herself to achieve personal goals.  Self-leadership is likely to be of great assistance to doctoral students currently working on a dissertation.  The principles of self-leadership can help doctoral students overcome the variety of obstacles that make finishing a dissertation such a difficult and trying process.  Participants will be exposed to a variety of techniques that are applicable not only in managing the dissertation process, but also in other aspects of an academic career.

The PDW will comprise an interactive session that includes presentations from some of the panelists, overall group discussion, and small group discussions. The presentations will introduce participants to self-leadership, while the group discussions will be particularly useful in getting valuable advice on the specific issues participants are facing.  In the small group discussions, students will be encouraged to share the hurdles they are facing and will hopefully leave the session armed with a variety of strategies to use that will assist them in completing their dissertations.

    Panelists/presenters for the PDW include:

    Charles C. Manz (<st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Massachusetts</st1:placename> at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Amherst</st1:city></st1:place>)

    Christopher Neck (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Virginia</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Tech</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype></st1:place>)

    Greg Stewart (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Iowa</st1:placename></st1:place>)

    Vikas Anand (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Arkansas</st1:placename></st1:place>)

Pre-registration is encouraged to be assured of a spot in the PDW.  Interested doctoral students are encouraged to e-mail the organizer, Kevin Henderson (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Arkansas</st1:placename></st1:place>), at khenderson@walton.uark.edu in order to pre-register.  Please include a recent CV with the email and a note about any specific problems you are facing or encountering with respect to the dissertation process. This PDW is likely to be of particular interest to doctoral students who have just begun to work on their dissertations, as well as those who are likely to soon start.  If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the undersigned!  Thank you for your time and we hope to see you in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>!

    Digital Transformations:

A Multi-Level Approach To Better Understand The Impact Of Information

Sponsor(s): BPS, OCIS, OMT, TIM Divisions
    Saturday, Aug 12 2006 9:00AM - 12:00PM at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place> Marriott Marquis in International 1

The PDW discusses the results of a 4-year research project on DIGITAL TRANSFORMATIONS: THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT). The workshop consists of four 45-minute sessions which use different levels of analysis. First, Len Waverman and <st1:personname w:st="on">Virginia Acha</st1:personname> introduce the economic impact of ICT and the relevance of the 'digital divide'. Second, Michael Jacobides and <st1:personname w:st="on">Stephan Billinger</st1:personname> discuss what is the impact of ICT on the industry level and show how ICTs are transforming sectors and change the boundaries of organizations. Third, Fernando Suarez and <st1:personname w:st="on">Gianvito Lanzolla</st1:personname> describe changes on the firm level and discuss factors that determine ICTs' impact on firm performance. In all sessions, the presenter gets direct feedback from a discussant and from the other presenters, who use their view to illustrate the correlation between the different levels of analysis. A final session brings together the various perspectives and discusses implications for public policy, strategy and operations. Discussants will be Richard Langlois and Lorin Hitt and we aim to foster open discussion throughout the PDW. In addition, we will set-up a homepage prior to the event to obtain additional input from other researchers (http://www.london.edu/digitaltransformations/events.html).

This Mini-track focuses on challenges presented by geographical, temporal, and cultural distribution among individuals working in virtual teams and organizations. We seek papers addressing these issues from an organizational, managerial, team, or individual perspective. We are also interested in enabling technologies and their use in these environments. In addition, we are interested in papers addressing the methodological difficulties of doing research in this area.

In this mini-track, we hope to present a wide-ranging set of contributions to this emerging field, focusing in particular on the practical lessons (for practitioners and researchers) that are emerging through the applications of the collaborative technologies being used as well as the working practices and insights from (real) virtual teams. We are interested the range of virtual teams, i.e., from mixed mode teams, where there may still be opportunities to meet FTF in addition to use of ICT for performing work activities to those teams whose members have never or rarely met FTF.  We are particularly interested in encouraging the submission of articles that employ field research methods (whether in the public or private sector, in profit-making or non-profit organizations, in academe, business or charitable organizations). Articles that challenge the status quo in current research and practice will be well received. With respect to epistemology, articles that espouse positivist, interpretivist or critical theory perspectives will be equally acceptable.

We want to bring together a wide range of topics in this area, topics including but not limited to:

    ·      Research on the effects of virtual environments on individuals, teams, and organizations

.      Implementation of virtual environments and related challenges

    ·      Development of organizational relationships (e.g., employee-employer and coworker relationships)

    ·      Effective leadership models

    ·      Career development and mentoring

    ·      Use of information and communication technologies

    ·      Role of national, organizational and/or professional culture and norms

    ·      Social environment, sense of community, and identity

    ·      Characteristics, effectiveness, leadership of virtual teams

    ·      Conflict management in (multi-cultural) distributed work arrangements
    ·      Frameworks, theories and constructs related to virtual environments
    ·      Use of incentives and reward systems
    ·      Studies of communication in virtual environments
    ·      Cross-cultural collaborative applications
    ·      Multilingual systems that facilitate virtual work

    ·      Managing distributed knowledge

For researchers on free, libre and open source software (FLOSS), I want to remind you of a unique opportunity to get feedback on your work in progress.

TIM, OCIS and BPS are co-sponsoring a research development research at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place>. The workshop will be held on Sunday, August 13, prior to this year's Academy meetings in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>.

Rather than to make a presentation to a large group, the point of the workshop is to get developmental feedback from small group discussion led by a senior researcher. This format has been used successfully in the past at other workshops as a way to develop work in progress for journal submission.

The deadline for submissions is May 15.   Submissions of work in progress are strongly encouraged; papers forthcoming or under the second round of review at a journal are not eligible.

Admission to the workshop is for accepted authors and co-authors. The workshop will be followed by a panel discussion on the current and future state of open source research.

Both sessions will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, International A on the International Level.

Additional information on workshop submissions and the panel can be found at the URLs below, or by contacting either/both of the workshop co-chairs at crowston@syr.edu or Joel.West@sjsu.edu

    *APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING*

Greetings.  Andy Hoffman and I are guest editing a special issue of the journal, Corporate Reputation Review (http://www.palgrave-journals.com/crr/index.html), on the topic of managing reputational interdependence.  We've previously announced the Call for Papers and Reviewers (http://www.coba.usf.edu/barnett/CRRcall.pdf).  Full papers are due by Sept. 1st, 2006.  We'd now like to add a new deadline.

In order to better gauge interest in the topic and to aid in organizing the issue, we ask that interested contributors please notify us of their intent to submit a full paper.  Please provide us with a short abstract -- a paragraph is fine; certainly no more than a page -- outlining your intended contribution by no later than June 30th.  Just e-mail it to: mbarnett@coba.usf.edu.  We may also organize a meeting with intended contributors at the <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Conference</st1:placename> in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place> this August.

    Thank you,

    School objectives

Categorical dependent variables are ubiquitous in all areas of social science. When dependent variables are categorical rather than continuous, conventional OLS regression techniques are not appropriate. This course discusses methods and models for the analysis of categorical dependent variables and their applications in social science research. While underlying theory will be thoroughly discussed, the greatest emphasis will be on application and interpretation of models and results (see full program for further details). The computer statistical package SAS will be used extensively for data analysis. PC-SAS for windows is installed on lab computers.

    Instructor

Paul Allison is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Pennsylvania</st1:placename></st1:place>, where he teaches graduate methods and statistics. He is widely recognized as an extraordinarily effective teacher of statistical methods who can reach students with highly diverse backgrounds and expertise. Prof. Allison is the author of Fixed Effects Regression Methods for Longitudinal Data Using SAS (SAS Institute 2005), Missing Data (Sage 2001), Logistic Regression Using SAS®: Theory and Application (SAS Institute 1999), Multiple Regression: A Primer (Pine Forge 1999), Survival Analysis Using SAS®: A Practical Guide (SAS Institute 1995), Event History Analysis (Sage 1984), and numerous articles on regression analysis, log-linear analysis, logit analysis, latent variable models, missing data, and inequality measures (for a full list see http://www.ssc.upenn.edu/~allison/). A former Guggenheim Fellow, he is also on the

editorial board of Sociological Methods and Research. In 2001 he received the Paul Lazarsfeld Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions to Sociological Methodology.

    Prerequisites

    Research Discussions:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been looking for lists / rankings / measures / etc. that regularly assess the degree to which organizations exhibit strong learning cultures, or in contrast, more efficiency-based cultures.  There are a variety of such lists in the business press (i.e. the recent list from BusinessWeek), but few that provide data over any significant period of time.  Further, I am ideally looking for a measure / list that provides consistent information about the same basic set of companies over several years.  The goal is to identify a proxy for the norms in such organizations that may support / hinder a firm's innovation initiatives.  If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate your input!  Email me at mannormi@msu.edu.  Thanks!!

    Thank you,

    <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Bologna</st1:placename></st1:place>

    <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Bologna</st1:city></st1:place>, June 5-9, 2006

Participants should enter this workshop with an active working knowledge of the topics covered in a standard course in Regression Analysis. A familiarity with the basic chi-square test for two-way contingency tables and elementary regression and ANOVA is also presumed.

    Location, format, materials

The 5 day course will be hosted by the <st1:placename w:st="on">Alma</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Graduate</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype>, located in the wonderful 16th century Villa Guastavillani, on the hills of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Bologna</st1:city></st1:place> www.almaweb.unibo.it/about_alma.html.

Participants will receive a 100-page manual containing detailed lecture notes (with equations and

graphics, examples of computer printout etc.). This document frees participants from the distracting task of note-taking. Participants may also want to refer to Professor Allison's book, Logistic Regression Using the SAS® System. The book is optional.

Thanks!!
