    List Digest Number 5 Problems

    Hello everyone,

I sent a message to the list on 3/2/06 with a couple announcements that apparently never went through.  We are currently looking into the reasons the message never went out to the list.  There were deadlines in that digest that have past and I would ask the sponsors that those deadlines be extended, if possible.  I have been out of the country since then and out of touch with e-mail until today.  This digest should contain all outstanding announcements.  If you sent a message to the list recently and it is not in this digest, please re-send it to me again and I will put it in the next digest.  Sorry again for any problems this may have caused.

    FLOSS Research Development Workshop

    <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename>, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>

    August 13, 2006

We would like to invite you to participate in an <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Professional Development Workshop</st1:placename></st1:place> for developing papers on free, libre and open source software (FLOSS). This PDW will be held on Sunday 13 August 2006, just before the <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Conference</st1:placename> in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">GA</st1:state>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">USA</st1:country-region></st1:place>. It is co-sponsored by the Technology & Innovation Management (TIM), Business Policy and Strategy (BPS) and Organizational Communication and Information Systems  (OCIS) divisions of the Academy.

This workshop is intended both for new and experienced researchers on FLOSS topics, across a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches. The goal of the workshop is to help authors understand the phenomenon, to build upon research, and to develop their own work into a paper publishable into top journals.

Rather than have presentations, the workshop will be organized around small group discussion. At each table, there will be a senior researcher and other authors with similar interests. Each author will get written and oral feedback from other participants, and required to reciprocate in kinds. We are borrowing the format from other theory development workshops where it has been very effective.

This will be followed by a second PDW with a series of panels discussing the present and future of open source software research. Participants are free to attend either or both PDWs. However, admission to the research development PDW is for authors of accepted papers only, and the deadline for submission is 15 May 2006.

Further information on both PDWs -- along with submission instructions -- can be found at http://floss2006.info/.

Please feel free to contact either of us with any questions.

We hope to see you in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>!

E-Networks in an Increasingly Volatile World

The Eleventh International Workshop on Telework - Canada 2006

    www.unb.ca/conferences/enetworks

    Second Call for Papers

Deadline for submissions: March 15, 2006

The University of New Brunswick (UNB) will host the Eleventh International Workshop on Telework, August 28–31, 2006 in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Fredericton</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">New Brunswick</st1:state>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region></st1:place>. This year's Workshop will be the first held in North America, occurring in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region></st1:place>'s first city to support a free urban wireless network. The aim of the event is to generate interaction and the sharing of ideas among academic researchers and business practitioners around the development and maintenance of computer-mediated networks. All papers selected for presentation will become part of the printed proceedings, which will be available to all registrants. Authors of select articles will also be invited to submit their paper for publication in a forthcoming book.

The theme of the 2006 workshop is "E-Networks in an Increasingly Volatile World". The increasing rate of technological innovation and a growing concern for continuity through periods of large-scale interruptions from natural, technological, and human-induced events are some factors contributing to a heightened sense of uncertainty and social turbulence. A major challenge today is how individuals, organizations and regions can leverage human capital to collaborate through unprecedented and complex work/life-scenarios. This workshop looks specifically at examining work strategies that involve e–networks that contribute to greater preparedness. We currently invite papers in the following themes:

    Special Streams for Workshop 2006

    1)    Mitigating risk via E-networks.

    2)    Creating public infrastructures that support E-networks

    3)    Work/life balance: The tangled web of work and home networks.

    Standing E-Work Streams

    1)    Organizational Change (complexity, ambiguity, conflict)

    2)    E-Collaboration, Technological Innovations & Support (platforms, collaboration)

    3)    Workspace Design (facilities, virtual space)

    4)    HRM Practices (diversity, professional development, retention)

    5)    E-learning in the workplace (content, delivery)

    6)    Community/Regional Initiatives (job creation, community viability, public policy)

    Submission Review Timetable

Deadline for extended abstract submissions: March 15, 2006

Notification of acceptance: April 15, 2006

Final papers due: June 15, 2006

Registration and payment by June 15, 2006

The workshop encourages research that may be in progress with findings and conclusions yet to be determined. In light of this, we permit submission of extended abstracts for review by the technical committee. The abstract should deal with the main topic of the paper and should be between 1000 and 1500 words. Prepare your abstract according to the posted styleguide (www.unb.ca/conferences/enetworks). The review process is double-blind, so please ensure that only the title is provided in the abstract. Abstracts will only be accepted as a Word file.

    Purpose and Content:

Based on the work of Burt and Uzzi recent research on social capital and relational capital highlight the value of social networks and relational embeddedness (e.g.,  Baum, Calabrese & Silverman, 2000; Burt, 1992; Walker, Kogut and Shan, 1997; Uzzi, 1997; Hitt, Bierman, Uhlenbruck & Shimizu, 2006). The emerging literature on the network paradigm in organizational research (Borgatti & Foster, 2003; Brass, Galaskiewicz, Greve & Tsai, 2004; Dacin, Ventresca & Beal, 1999; Uzzi & Gillespei, 2002) generally concludes that networks have many benefits such as trust building, sharing of information, and engaging in joint problem solving. Firms with social and relational capital have a higher survival rate in competitive environments (Holcomb, Holmes & Hitt, 2006) and perform at higher levels (Batjargal, 2003; Hitt et al, 2006). However, it has also become clear that networks are not always beneficial and that participation in networks can have unintended negative consequences. More networking is not necessarily better; networks have also their dark sides (Collins, 2005; Gargiulo & Benassi, 1999; Lechner, Dowling & Welpe, 2005). Particular network ties may have detrimental effects on performance and choices have to be made which network ties to develop. The key challenge is determining which ties matter and when they matter (Gulati & Higgens, 2003). In some studies the beneficial effects of a dense network structure are found, while others stress the positive effects of a sparse networks with structural holes on performance (Burt, 1992; McEvily & Zaheer, 1999). Similarly, the debate on what combination of weak and strong ties is most beneficial has not yet been resolved (Elfring & Hulsink, 2003; Jack, 2005). Furthermore, informal social networks play a different role than formal agreements, such as alliances. Both types of networks are required, but it is not clear how they interact, for example, whether informal networks may support the effectiveness of formal collaborations (Cross, Borgatti & Parker, 2002). Finally, the strength of ties and the structure of the network have an impact on organizational performance, however, increasingly scholars find evidence that what flows through the network ties, in other words the content of the ties, is of importance as well (Podolny & Baron, 1997; Rodan & Galunic, 2004). Thus, more research is needed to understand when social and relational capital produces higher performance and when embeddedness should be reduced in to avoid negative consequences.

This workshop will contribute to the above discussion by exploring new perspectives on the question how, when, and under what conditions social and relational capital matter for both opportunity and advantage seeking actions by entrepreneurial firms. We invite participants to study relevant questions in many different contexts to identify how network benefits are contingent on the fit between a particular network configuration (including issues such as levels of analysis (Ibarra, Kilduff & Tsai, 2005)) and the organizational context. The design of effective networks and relationships is part of the strategic entrepreneurship challenge in both small firms, such as start-ups, and large established companies. For example, the relationship between networking and entrepreneurship has drawn increasing attention (Hoang & Antoncic, 2003; Greve & Salaff, 2003; Witt, 2004), but the way network ties are beneficial for opportunity and advantage seeking strategies in small firms requires much more investigation. Potential network benefits can be studied with regard to various important topics within the strategic entrepreneurship domain such as new product development and internationalisation. Moreover, strategic management research traditionally concentrated on the impact of formal network ties, such as alliances, on the performance of established companies (Madhok, 2002). More recently this work is complemented with studies on the effects of informal social networks on entrepreneurial behaviour and on innovation strategies of large companies (Simsek, Lubatkin & Floyd, 2003). The latter focus on opportunity seeking behaviour can in combination with the traditional alliances studies address the joint challenge of how networks affect both opportunity and advantage seeking in the strategic entrepreneurship paradigm.

We aim to have approximately 25-30 participants. If you are interested in participating, please send an abstract of your paper of no more than 500 words by March 30th to Tom Elfring at t.elfring@fsw.vu.nl. Decisions to participate are made by April 15th. Full papers are expected by June 15th.

8th International Conference on Social Values in Education and Business     (OXSVEB)

    July 19-21, 2006, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">University of Oxford</st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">England</st1:country-region></st1:place>

Conference Theme:  Ethical Conflict and the "Sleep of Reason"

Call for Papers:  Conflict:  National, Global, Sectarian, Corporate, Psychological, and Educational

Ethical issues and conflict remain universal concerns. The interaction of cultures and economies through the spread of globalization has led to an increase in diversity. At the same time there is a counter-movement leading to homogenization. This blending impacts values, attitudes, needs, expectations, and lifestyles.

We are seeking broad-based papers which explore the ethical conflicts which arise from these interactions. Negotiating this emerging environment requires new skills and educational approaches. Papers are invited which focus on global, national, sectarian, corporate, psychological and educational arenas in which these concerns are played out.

    Some concrete concerns include:

    • Conflict in training concepts for corporate change management
    • Conflict in the management of policy and action
    • Conflict in skills education and change management
    • Conflict in cultural work habits and the global corporation
    • Conflict in capability and expectation in the work place
    • Conflict in management processes open to interpretation and unfair practices
    • Conflict in advancement processes and the legal environment
    • Conflict in corporate cultures
    • Conflict Within the Self

    Research Discussions:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Dear</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype></st1:place> colleagues,

Now that a second wave of papers have come out on open innovation, the list of published research on OI extends beyond Chesbrough (2003a, 2003b, 2003c, 2003d and 2003e).

I have compiled a bibliography of published papers and books on open innovation, including key papers published in the last few months (Christensen et al ResPol 2005; Laursen & Salter SMJ 2006). I've also included forthcoming articles and book chapters of which I'm aware. Where possible, I've included links to either the official copy of the paper, or an unofficial copy.

The list can be found at:

    http://www.openinnovation.net/Research/Bibliography.html

If you know of any published or forthcoming work, please let me know. I plan on updating the bibliography on an ongoing basis (at least quarterly), so keep me in mind if you get something accepted down the road.

    Joel
