    Join the Discussion on the Impact of Business School Research

    The Academy of Management has long been a facilitator of discussion regarding the impact of research conducted by faculty within business schools. In fact, several recent editions of the Academy of Management Journal have included articles regarding the process and relevance of academic research.

    It is in the spirit of this discussion that AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business invites comments from all Academy members regarding its recently released Report of the AACSB International Impact of Research Task Force – Draft for Comments, and particularly the report’s recommendations for increasing the overall value and visibility of business school research. Feedback received prior to October 31, 2007 will inform the AACSB Board of Directors as it develops a plan of action related to this issue of great significance to both academics and practitioners. The report is available for download and comment at www.aacsb.edu/research.

    2008 TIM Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

    The TIM Division seeks innovative proposals for its pre-conference Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) at the Academy of Management’s annual meeting at Anaheim (August 2008). The "The Questions We Ask” conference theme is relevant to the fast-changing nature of technology and well suited to the diverse expertise and interests of the TIM Division members. We hope that the TIM PDW sessions will explore the many dimensions of this theme.

    PDW sessions are attractive venues for those hoping to explore cutting edge issues since they have longer time-frames than other Academy sessions, have flexible formats, and tend to enhance interaction among participants. The PDW sessions are usually held between Friday afternoon and Sunday noon immediately preceding the Academy meetings.

    You are encouraged to send in proposals related to the conference theme or to new trends in research and practice of Technology and Innovation Management. Proposals will be selected based on (a) relevance to the interests of the Division’s membership; (b) creativity; (c) potential to foster integration with the rest of the AOM (we welcome proposals that are co-sponsored by the other Divisions and Interest Groups).

    We encourage you to submit a proposal by using the PDW form available at the Anaheim meeting website (http://submissions.aomonline.org/2008) under ‘Forms and Documents’. Please send your proposals to Fernando Suarez at suarezf@bu.edu by November 15, 2007. If you have any questions, please contact Fernando.

    Call for Papers - International Journal of Technology Management (IJTM)
    Special Issue on: "Broadening the Scope of Open Innovation"

    Deadline: 1 October 2007

    Guest Editors:
    Oliver Gassmann, University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland
    Wim Vanhaverbeke, Hasselt University & Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands
    Vareska van de Vrande, RSM Erasmus University, The Netherlands

    Henry Chesbrough coined the term 'Open Innovation' to indicate how large companies combine externally and internally developed technologies in a flexible way to develop new businesses. Since then, there has been an increased awareness and interest of both practitioners and researchers into the concept of Open Innovation.

    Open Innovation was originally applied to external corporate venturing, new business development, spin-ins and spin-offs, but it has many other potential application fields. Scholars are nowadays broadening the scope and deepening our understanding of Open Innovation. There is a growing need integrate Open Innovation into the mainstream management literature and to link it to concepts such as absorptive capacity, dynamic capabilities, competence building, etc. The growing range of application fields requires an integrative framework to link these different areas to each other.
    Finally, Open Innovation management has proven to be difficult as most companies are not experienced with the management of external relationships.
    Despite the growing efforts to explore Open Innovation practices and their impact on firms' innovation performance, many managerial questions remain unanswered.

    This special issue aims to stimulate the ongoing debate on Open Innovation and advance our understanding of open innovation as a field of research.
    Submissions are invited from both practitioners and management researchers and they may be purely theoretical or based on empirical research.

    Subject Coverage

    Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

    * The organization of open innovation practices inside the firm
    * What are the processes and mechanisms through which internal innovation is commercialized outside the firm?
    * How do external sources of innovation enter the firm?
    * The added-value of open innovation practices for all parties involved
    * How is cooperation with universities, research institutes, competitors, and/or consumers organized?
    * Open source as an open innovation strategy
    * IP management in a world of open innovation
    * How do IP rights affect open innovation practices?
    * What is the role of the government in stimulating open innovation?
    * How much open innovation vs. closed innovation does a company need?
    * Industry and product specifics on open innovation impact
    * Potentials of inter-organizational networks for open innovation
    * Innovation controlling of open innovation activities (e.g. key performance indicators, controlling instruments)
    * Company's capabilities to profit from open innovation
    * How to link open innovation to capability building and corporate strategy processes?
    * How to create and capture value in Open Innovation?
    * What is the role of business models, organization structure and corporate culture in developing efficient innovation practices?

    Important Dates

    Deadline for submission of manuscripts: 1 October 2007
    Notification of acceptance/rejection to authors: 1 January 2008

    Call for Papers Deadline Approaching
    Decision Sciences Special Topic Forum
    Advancing Decision Making in Service Innovation
    Deadline: October 31, 2007
    Associate Editor Team
    Tor W. Andreassen, Norwegian School of Management
    James C. Spohrer, IBM Almaden Research Center
    Rohit Verma, Cornell University
    While academic scholars have made great strides in the past decade to discover, evaluate, and model decisions in the services economy, there is still much work to be done in rigorously developing the “science” of services. Over the past decade, Decision Sciences has taken a leading role in publishing interdisciplinary services research and will continue to do so in the near future. Most recently, Decision Sciences (Smith-Daniels, 2007) published the special topic forum “The Next Frontier in Services Research” to stimulate forward-thinking research related to designing and managing services in today’s rapidly changing environment. To continue the advancement of the services research agenda, Decision Sciences announces the special topic forum, “Advancing Decision Making in Service Innovation.” Following the spirit of IBM and other corporate initiatives (e.g., Spohrer, et al. 2007; Jana, 2007), Decision Sciences seeks papers that promote a transdisciplinary discourse by bringing together academics from information technology, operations management, marketing, human resource management, business strategy, management sciences, and social and cognitive sciences.
    Service innovation promotes the design of new services and enhancements in service delivery systems. This special topic forum explores service innovation decision making ranging from strategic to operational decision problems involving inter-organizational, group-based, and technology-enabled aspects. Call for Papers Deadline Approaching
    Decision Sciences Special Topic Forum
    Advancing Decision Making in Service Innovation
    Deadline: October 31, 2007

Papers published in this special topic forum should address a specific decision problem, provide clear managerial insights that improve decision making, and/or contribute to an emerging theory of service innovation.
    Building on the refocused editorial mission of Decision Sciences, this STF seeks manuscripts utilizing diverse research approaches such as theoretical, empirical, and analytical research methods. CALL FOR PAPERS

    A Special Issue on "Cultural Aspects of Interaction Design"

    The notion of interaction design has become an indispensable aspect of product design and development, especially for those products with embedded information technologies. While traditional industrial design focuses on a product's functionality and its physical features, interaction design focuses on the interactive experience of users. Since products are becoming more pervasively and more tightly interwoven with our daily activities, design calls for a deeper understanding of the diverse perspectives of product use.

    Culture has been considered to play a critical role for users in their understanding, acceptance, positioning, and use of an artifact. The quality of an interactive experience is produced in a particular cultural context and is determined or evaluated in that context. Yet, when it comes to incorporating cultural factors effectively in design practice, knowledge is insufficient at all levels -- conceptual, theoretical, methodological, and practical. Cultural factors need to be integrated in the design process in order to achieve the high quality of product interaction that enables our experience with a product to be effective and enjoyable.

    For this special issue of the International Journal of Design, we are seeking papers that present breakthroughs in conceptual, theoretical, methodological and practical research that enhance the formalization of design knowledge with regard to the "cultural aspects of interaction design." In particular, these contributions should focus on representing cultural factors in describable, operable, and usable forms of design knowledge with relevance to interaction design. The following topics are of particular interest, covering fundamental and contemporary issues in this
    domain:

    - Conceptual framework of cultural factors in interaction design
    - Acquisition and representation methods for cultural factors in design
    - Formal models of cultural factors in interaction design
    - Planning, design, and evaluation methods that involve cultural perspectives
    - Cultural aspects of interaction methods and languages
    - Assessment of the cultural effects of new interactive products
    - Cultural factors in Kansei/emotional/affective aspects of interaction
    - Cultural contexts of interaction design for ambient intelligence environments
    - Cultural factors related to usability

    Schedule:

    Full Paper Due: 28 February 2008
    Notification of Acceptance: 30 April 2008 Final Version of Paper Due: 31 May 2008 Special Issue Publication Date: 1 August 2008

    Submission of Papers:

    Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the guidelines found at

    www.ijdesign.org/authorGuidelines

    Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A double-blind review process will be employed for this special issue.

    Manuscripts should be sent through the on-line system at

    www.ijdesign.org/submissions

    Issues in
    Information and Media Literacy
    book of readings and cases
    Call for Chapters / Call for Reviewers
    Please note that all books published by the Informing Science Press, including this one, are available online without charge at http://urltea.com/s1h.
    Introduction
    The editors of Issues in Information and Media Literacy, a volume of case studies and academic papers to be published by the Informing Science Institute, invite chapters on a range of issues related to information and media literacy. We also seek colleagues from all fields involved with this area who are willing to provide quality reviews of submitted chapters in a timely manner (please see below).
    Information and media literacy (media literacy is often subsumed into information literacy and this volume considers both) is regarded by many as a cornerstone for full participation in the ‘Information Society’. Moreover it is increasingly widely recognised as an important area of educational practice, social activism, public policy and academic research.
    Even though the terms information literacy and media literacy have a relatively short history (media literacy has been around considerably longer than information literacy) they have attracted considerable attention from a wide range of academic disciplines and are considered key topics in many areas of academic study including education, information science, librarianship, mass communications, planning, political science and sociology amongst many others. Moreover, information and media literacy is a field of key interest to numerous educationalists, civil society activists, non-governmental organisations, international development agencies and supra-governmental organisations.
    This book will bring together accounts from practitioners, educationalists, academics and others in an innovative, exciting and mutually informing manner. The text will offer a fresh interdisciplinary approach to the issues and aims to identify new areas of practice and research. The book will be widely available in print through online book retailers including Amazon and available free in electronic format online.
    Information and Media Literacy
    While the terms information and media literacy are widely used it is interesting to note that no single definition that is accepted by all exists. Indeed defining what information or media literacy actually refers to is one of the key fracture points in the field and spawns much debate. Most definitions agree that information and media literacy refers to a set of central skills that are best developed in tandem. Whilst not definitive list, many accounts state that an information literate person will be able to:
    • recognise the need for;
    • access;
    • analyse or interpret;
    • critically evaluate; and
    • communicate
    information in a variety of forms in various media.
    For example, the UNESCO-sponsored Meeting of Experts on Information Literacy in Prague in 2003 proffers that:
    "Information Literacy encompasses knowledge of one's information concerns and needs, and the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, organize and effectively create, use and communicate information to address issues or problems at hand." (US National Commission on Library and Information Science, 2003)
    Beyond this basic premise however consensus breaks down a little and numerous questions arise:
    • How best to promote and action information and media literacy?
    • Is information and media literacy an end in itself?
    • What models of learning and even politics underpin it?
    • Is there a difference between information and media literacy and information skills?
    • What actual strategies and activities to teach / encourage / develop information and media literacy work best?
    These questions amongst many others now inform this very vibrant field of practice and academic research.
    Content
    This volume seeks to bring together accounts of the latest programmes, practical activities and research in the field. We wish to share good practice and to set new directions in research. We are keen to receive submissions in two forms:
    1. Academic papers that detail original research and activities in the field. Submitted papers should be original, have not been published elsewhere and will be double blind peer-reviewed. Full chapters (guideline 5000-7000 words) are invited.
    2. Discussions, descriptions and case studies of activities, programmes and initiatives that address issues of information and media literacy. Submitted papers may detail specific activities and strategies, offer a broader view or be a call for action on specific issue. We are particularly keen to receive submissions from practitioners in the field, educators and those involved in setting and implementing policy. Submitted papers should offer substantive new information, detail a successful (or unsuccessful) initiative or offer a fresh perspective. Chapters will be reviewed and final submissions are to concur with a specific house template. Full chapters (5000-7000 words) are invited.
    Indicative topics:
    In addition to the topics listed below we are keen to receive fresh and innovative approaches and areas. This may include:
    • Case studies, discussions and descriptions of information and media literacy related activities;
    • New models and theoretical aspects of information and media literacy;
    • Defining information and media literacy;
    • Future directions in information and media literacy;

    Hi Folks:

    I am editing a new book titled “Information Technology and Product Development: A Research Agenda” to be published by Springer as part of its Annals of Information Systems series.

    This book will provide a platform for researchers from diverse disciplinary areas – including information systems, marketing, operations, strategy, and organizational behavior – to build on and develop new theoretical concepts and insights on the application of IT in product development. The main objective of the book is to contribute towards the development of an integrative theoretical framework that could inform on (a) the role and the business value of IT in product development, and (b) the organizational and managerial issues that underlie the successful deployment of IT in diverse product development contexts.

    Chapter proposals are invited on all aspects of IT and product development. If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this book, pl. email me a 2-page chapter proposal by November 30, 2007. Thank you.
