Join the Discussion on the Impact of Business School Research
The Academy of Management has long been a facilitator of discussion regarding the impact of research conducted by faculty within business schools. In fact, several recent editions of the Academy of Management Journal have included articles regarding the process and relevance of academic research.
It is in the spirit of this discussion that AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business invites comments from all Academy members regarding its recently released Report of the AACSB International Impact of Research Task Force – Draft for Comments, and particularly the report’s recommendations for increasing the overall value and visibility of business school research. Feedback received prior to October 31, 2007 will inform the AACSB Board of Directors as it develops a plan of action related to this issue of great significance to both academics and practitioners. The report is available for download and comment at
www.aacsb.edu/research.

Commensurately with the growth in our faculty in strategy and entrepreneurship at Georgia Tech, we are growing our PhD program. Please be so kind and pass on the information below to any potentially interested student.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Strategic Management at Georgia Tech
The Strategic Management area at Georgia Tech’s College of Management (COM)
seeks Qualified Applicants for their Ph.D. program
Have you ever thought about getting a Ph.D.? A doctoral degree qualifies you to pursue an academic career as a researcher and educator. An academic career provides not only tremendous intellectual freedom, but makes it possible to work with bright people throughout your life. You really can make a difference through the scholarly research you create, and the lives you shape through your teaching. The life style is great, and the pay is good! Frequently, Ph.D. graduates’ starting salary range from $100K to $150K, depending on placement, which is largely determined by performance in the doctoral program. Moreover, the job market for Strategy Ph.D.s has been strong, and in recent years more positions have been available than candidates pursuing jobs. Thus, it is not surprising that the position of a university professor is frequently ranked as one of the most desirable jobs in the world.
Why in Strategic Management? As the integrative discipline in business management, strategy is both interesting and fun. The unifying element of strategy research is driven by answering the question of why do some firms outperform their competitors? To answer this critical question, researchers draw on different disciplines, such as economics and sociology, to study the critical roles that managers, technologies, and business relationships play in determining why some companies do better than others.
Why at Georgia Tech? GT’s Ph.D. program is strongly research oriented, and emphasizes the early involvement of our students in research projects with world-wide leading faculty. The Ph.D. program places significant weight on learning outside the classroom. Given the small size of the program, the tutorial-mentor model is the primary educational approach employed. Thus, doctoral students experience significant attention and support by a diverse set of world-class faculty.
At Georgia Tech, the study of strategic management is interdisciplinary and integrative; providing focus in the areas of technology and innovation management, entrepreneurship, and international management. The Strategic Management area represents a strong community of active researchers pursuing a wide variety of interests. See
http://mgt.gatech.edu/fac_research/acad_areas/stg_mgt.html for more information.
Current strategy Ph.D. students are very successful. They have published in leading research journals (e.g., Industrial and Corporate Change and Organization Science), and research has been included in the Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings. Current students have presented research at prestigious conferences held in the U.S. and Europe like the Academy of Management Meetings, Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference (ACAC), Roundtable for Engineering Entrepreneurship Research (REER), Strategic Management Society Conference, and the Technology Transfer Society (T2S) Conference. They have been included in by-invitation-only conferences and invited to present research at places like the Harvard Business School, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. A current student has won a competitive Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship and College of Management Teaching Award. Another student holds one of the coveted Presidential Fellowships.
Here is what some current Ph.D. students have to say about Georgia Tech’s Ph.D. program in strategic management:
• I selected the Georgia Tech Ph.D. program in Strategic Management over several others because I found good synergy between my research interests and those of the faculty in the program here. The strategy faculty has a strong commitment to fields such as innovation, high technology, international issues and entrepreneurship. The multi-disciplinary approach is encouraged through a variety of classroom settings and research activities.
• The program in strategy is has a strong research emphasis in innovation, which is unique among all the top management Ph.D. programs. After spending a year, I am impressed by the academic atmosphere here: there is around-the-clock hard-work going on in every corner of this brand-new building, but there is fun among us as we enjoy life, and there is frequent cooperation between faculty from different departments, and there is a culture that encourages students and faculty to work together closely.
• Many new Ph.D. students are concerned about finding a faculty member whose research interests overlap with their own. I have found that at Georgia Tech, this concern is mitigated both by the faculty’s breadth of research interests and willingness to help young researchers.
• The Georgia Tech Ph.D. program has encouraged my intellectual growth and provided a challenging environment in which to learn how to be a successful faculty member at a top-level research university.
• There exists a rare balance in the Ph.D. program at Georgia Tech between allowing young researchers the freedom to explore their own interests and giving them the guidance to create exemplary research.
• Faculty are very supportive in developing each student's research ability.
• At the end of my 3rd year, I am confident I have made a good choice for my doctoral study. The research active faculty are approachable and willing to work on joint projects with Ph.D. students. I have already had several opportunities to present papers at academic conferences both domestically and abroad.
The COM at Georgia Tech is the home of an NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training program, Technological Innovation: Generating Economic Results (TI:GER, see
http://tiger.gatech.edu/), as well as a US Department of Education funded Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER, see
http://www.ciber.gatech.edu/). Additional information about Georgia Tech’s COM and its faculty is available at:
http://mgt.gatech.edu/ The Strategic Management area represents a strong community of active researchers pursuing a diversity of interests (See
http://mgt.gatech.edu/fac_research/acad_areas/stg_mgt.html for more information). The strategy area at Georgia Tech hosts and co-sponsors leading annual research conferences like the Roundtable for Engineering Entrepreneurship Research (REER) and the Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference (ACAC), which provide an opportunity to mingle with world-wide leading scholars in entrepreneurship and strategy.
How do I finance the program, and how do I apply? If admitted to the program, we’ll pay you to go to school to get your degree! Your tuition will be waived, and you’ll received a stipend, etc. Application deadline is January 15th for admission the following fall semester (August 15th). All relevant financial information, including the application package is online at
http://mgt.gatech.edu/programs/phd.html?link=left_info_for The strategy area will consider applicants that took either the GMAT or the GRE.
Contact the strategy Ph.D. coordinator, Professor Frank T. Rothaermel at
frank.rothaermel@mgt.gatech.edu for any remaining questions.

2008 TIM Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
The TIM Division seeks innovative proposals for its pre-conference Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) at the Academy of Management’s annual meeting at Anaheim (August 2008). The "The Questions We Ask” conference theme is relevant to the fast-changing nature of technology and well suited to the diverse expertise and interests of the TIM Division members. We hope that the TIM PDW sessions will explore the many dimensions of this theme.
PDW sessions are attractive venues for those hoping to explore cutting edge issues since they have longer time-frames than other Academy sessions, have flexible formats, and tend to enhance interaction among participants. The PDW sessions are usually held between Friday afternoon and Sunday noon immediately preceding the Academy meetings.
You are encouraged to send in proposals related to the conference theme or to new trends in research and practice of Technology and Innovation Management. Proposals will be selected based on (a) relevance to the interests of the Division’s membership; (b) creativity; (c) potential to foster integration with the rest of the AOM (we welcome proposals that are co-sponsored by the other Divisions and Interest Groups).
We encourage you to submit a proposal by using the PDW form available at the Anaheim meeting website (http://submissions.aomonline.org/2008) under ‘Forms and Documents’. Please send your proposals to Fernando Suarez at

CALL FOR PAPERS: Special issue of Journal of Management Studies
Offshoring & Outsourcing: The Organizational and Geographical Relocation of High-Value Company Functions
Submission Deadline June 15, 2008
Most companies have traditionally performed the bulk of their high-value functions within their home nation in which the parent firm is located. It was believed that the competitive advantage of a firm resided in its “core” activities, and that these should be kept in-house in order to foster future capabilities and to protect key knowledge from leakage to competitors. Examples of core or “high value” functions include Research and Development (R&D), critical IT designs, and proprietary processes. However, several firms are now considering the relocation of even some high-value activities to (a) foreign locations (“Offshoring”) and/or (b) to external service providers or alliance partners (“Outsourcing”). In short, high-value activities are beginning to be both offshored and outsourced. A JMS Special Issue seeks to identify the factors that determine the mix, or spread, of global high-value operations over in-house versus external vendors -- and in geographical terms, the proportion of home nation high-value activities, versus high-value functions that the firm undertakes in foreign countries.
While IT services such as software writing were among the first to be offshored, the phenomenon is now spreading to other higher-value business processes under the rubric of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). The worldwide market for BPO was estimated by the research firm IDC to be $382.5 billion in 2004, with a 10.9% annual growth expected through 2009. With the rise in services offshoring, many countries are competing with each other to be considered an attractive location for service sector value added.
In the ultimate analysis, any business process or task that can be (i) decomposed, (ii) codified, and (iii) digitized, is amenable to outsourcing. This potentially affects almost every department of a firm, from accounting, to human resource management, as well as complex tasks such as the mathematical modeling of derivatives and R&D. Only the most tacit and deeply-embedded knowledge functions, or those requiring local, culturally-sensitive, interactions with customers, are exempt from such concerns.
Types of Papers for the Special Issue
Both empirical as well as theory-building papers will be considered. As this topic lies at the intersection of several scholarly domains, papers can draw from several fields, such as Organization Theory, Strategy, International Business, and Technology & Innovation Management. However, aspects of the phenomenon can also encompass other areas such as Entrepreneurship, Operations Research and Organizational Behaviour.
Examples of Sub Topics that May Be Included in the JMS Special Issue and Conference
This special issue seeks to explore themes such as the ones shown below. The list below is not meant to be exhaustive, and authors are welcome to contribute papers with other perspectives as well.
• Why are companies considering the offshoring and/or outsourcing of core functions (for example R&D) that comprise the heart of a firm’s competitive advantage?
• What management processes are being used in companies to formulate and evaluate such decisions? In short, how do companies strategize the decision making process that determines the organizational or geographical spread of value added activities
• What precautionary mechanisms are being put into place to protect proprietary knowledge and capabilities of the firm and prevent the loss of future competitiveness?
• What is the extent of (knowledge) spillover benefits that host-nations get from global outsourcing and offshoring activities?
• What role do emerging markets and/or emerging market firms play in the global outsourcing/offshoring phenomenon?
• How does intellectual property protection affect the offshoring decision
• What implications do outsourcing/offshoring of activities of large multinationals have on entrepreneurship within the organization?
• What implications does the outsourcing/offshoring of activities have on international business theories and practices of firms worldwide?
• What is the role of intermediate organizational modes or quasi-integration such as alliance or cooperative relationships that lie in between internalization and arms-length outsourcing?
• Has codification of knowledge increased? Once codified, are even complex, high value functions are now amenable to outsourcing?

Keynote Speakers
John Van Maanen

Over the past two decades, qualitative research in management and organization studies has grown, exploring new forms of fieldwork, method, theorizing, and writing. Yet qualitative research has a long and distinguished history extending at least from the Hawthorne Studies of the 1920s and the early urban ethnographies and anthropological contributions.
One of the key contributions that linked this history to exciting new developments in fieldwork was John Van Maanen's seminal Tales of the Field (1988). This book had, and continues to have a profound impact on qualitative organizational scholarship because it highlighted the possibilities for doing and writing ethnography differently, for engaging more directly with organizational life, and for thinking more reflexively about such work.
This conference has two purposes. The first is to recognize and celebrate John Van Maanen's impact on the field. The second is to create a space where qualitative scholars doing research in on and around organizations using a multiplicity of methods, voices, and ways of writing qualitative work, can exchange ideas and engage in critical discussion.
We are interested in papers, panels, and innovative sessions that explore the philosophical, theoretical, and practical aspects of qualitative approaches to researching organizational life. We encourage contributions from a range of disciplines including but not limited to management and organization studies, accounting, marketing, communications, cultural studies, information and decision sciences, sociology, psychology, education, health and public administration. Papers may also explore the ontological and epistemological as well as methodological and practical aspects of qualitative research from a variety of perspectives.
Papers addressing the conference theme directly, whether looking at practical or theoretical aspects of organizational narratives or narrative knowing, are particularly welcome.
Prospective contributors should send an abstract of up to 500 words, via

Call for Papers - International Journal of Technology Management (IJTM) Special Issue on: "Broadening the Scope of Open Innovation"
Deadline: 1 October 2007
Guest Editors:
Oliver Gassmann, University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland
Wim Vanhaverbeke, Hasselt University & Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands
Vareska van de Vrande, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands
Henry Chesbrough coined the term 'Open Innovation' to indicate how large companies combine externally and internally developed technologies in a flexible way to develop new businesses. Since then, there has been an increased awareness and interest of both practitioners and researchers into the concept of Open Innovation.
Open Innovation was originally applied to external corporate venturing, new business development, spin-ins and spin-offs, but it has many other potential application fields. Scholars are nowadays broadening the scope and deepening our understanding of Open Innovation. There is a growing need integrate Open Innovation into the mainstream management literature and to link it to concepts such as absorptive capacity, dynamic capabilities, competence building, etc. The growing range of application fields requires an integrative framework to link these different areas to each other. Finally, Open Innovation management has proven to be difficult as most companies are not experienced with the management of external relationships. Despite the growing efforts to explore Open Innovation practices and their impact on firms' innovation performance, many managerial questions remain unanswered.
This special issue aims to stimulate the ongoing debate on Open Innovation and advance our understanding of open innovation as a field of research. Submissions are invited from both practitioners and management researchers and they may be purely theoretical or based on empirical research.
Subject Coverage
Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* The organisation of open innovation practices inside the firm
* What are the processes and mechanisms through which internal innovation is commercialised outside the firm?
* How do external sources of innovation enter the firm?
* The added-value of open innovation practices for all parties involved
* How is cooperation with universities, research institutes, competitors, and/or consumers organised?
* Open source as an open innovation strategy
* IP management in a world of open innovation
* How do IP rights affect open innovation practices?
* What is the role of the government in stimulating open innovation?
* How much open innovation vs. closed innovation does a company need?
* Industry and product specifics on open innovation impact
* Potentials of inter-organisational networks for open innovation
* Innovation controlling of open innovation activities (e.g. key performance indicators, controlling instruments)
* Company's capabilities to profit from open innovation
* How to link open innovation to capability building and corporate strategy processes?
* How to create and capture value in Open Innovation?
* What is the role of business models, organisation structure and corporate culture in developing efficient innovation practices?

1st Global e-Conference on Fit
Change of date
First, and most important, we have moved the dates of the conference forward a day to avoid the clash with Thanksgiving. The conference will now start on Monday 19th November and will run through to the end of Wednesday 21st November.
Keynote speakers
We are absolutely delighted that three people whose names will be familiar to all fit scholars have kindly accepted our invitations to be keynote speakers. They are Amy Kristof-Brown, Cheri Ostroff and Ben Schneider. You can find out more about our keynote speakers on the website: Keynotes. We hope to add one or two more keynote speakers and we will update you in the next newsletter and on the website.
Submissions
We are keen to receive papers on all subjects to do with fit. They could be empirical, conceptual, theoretical, case-based, provocative essay, review, teaching guidance, reflective, workshop, art-based, photographic, poetic... anything to do with fit. Hopefully this doesn't sound too unfocussed (or too desperate!), but we genuinely want to provide an inclusive and rich array of events that will excite people who are interested in fit.
We have decided to limit all 'written' submissions to a maximum of 12,000 characters (including spaces). This equates to about four sides of A4 paper, single-spaced. We have chosen this length for four reasons:
• It is long enough to allow the author(s) to say something meaningful.
• It is short enough to be read online during the conference.
• It is a good length for the 'first draft' of papers (especially if you are developing something for the January deadline of the Academy of Management!).
• Papers of this length are likely to be sufficiently different to 'final' versions that are presented to journals to prevent any concerns about previous publication.
Please remember that the 12,000 characters is a maximum length. Although we imagine that empirical, review, conceptual and theoretical contributions will probably approach this length to be accepted, many of the other formats naturally lend themselves to shorter papers. For example, a review of a film or a book could be quite short. So could a case study or teaching guidance.
Book of Proceedings
We are thinking about gathering the submissions together in a Book of Proceedings and have already located a publisher who would be interested in publishing such a book. But before finalising the deal, we wanted to find out if contributors would be interested in having their submissions included in this book. If you are thinking about submitting a paper to the conference, please click the following link to record your view: Survey
Best paper awards
We will be awarding two prizes. One for the best paper and one for best paper by a doctoral student. We might also award prizes for the best teaching and application papers. We hope to decide the winners by a vote of all delegates on the final day of the conference.
The key dates
• Conference dates: 19th - 21st November 2007
• Deadline for papers: 1st November 2007
Please spread the word about the conference; we already have more than 120 people signed-up to be kept informed, but the more, the merrier.
I hope to 'see' you in November.
All the best,
Jon

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management
Special Issue on “Managing Innovation in Emerging Economies”
Guest Editors:
Clayton Christensen (Harvard University), Chang-Chieh Hang (National University of Singapore),
Kah-Hin Chai (National University of Singapore)
Email:
tem-special@ieee.org or
iseckh@nus.edu.sg
This special issue will focus on the management of innovation in emerging economies with widespread impact such as Brazil, China, India, and Russia. This is a timely effort, since emerging economies are increasingly an important driving force in the world economy. In line with a recent report by the Economist (Sep 16, 2006), we define emerging economies as countries that were not OECD members prior to 1994, regardless of their current status. Because of the vast differences in education, political, economic, and geographical factors, the challenges faced by technology managers and entrepreneurs in these markets are numerous and multi-faceted. The emphasis of this special issue is on the management of innovation, engineering, and technology at the firm level rather than macroeconomic national policy-level.
Given the differences and uneven levels of development among emerging economies, what and how should different types of innovations be introduced and managed in these countries? In what ways should local companies manage their ‘indigenous’ innovations? How relevant or useful are existing innovation theories and practices that have primarily been developed in western countries when they are applied to China, for example? What are the ‘new’ theories? Surrounding these and related questions are a broad range of topics in innovation and technology management. We particularly welcome papers on managing innovation in emerging economies in the following areas:
• Innovation strategies
• Intellectual property management and strategy
• Disruptive innovation
• Managing indigenous technologies
• Technological entrepreneurship • R&D management
• University-industry technology transfer
• Human resource issues
• Strategic alliances
• Organization structures and cultures
We seek both research and practice articles which will enhance our understanding of the topic. Research articles are empirical or conceptual papers that present the results of research, new theories which integrate existing literature, or state-of-the-art models in the relevant areas. Practice papers describe significant application issues, innovative case studies or actual implementations of existing concepts or methodology. These papers describe complex real-life situations requiring innovative solutions. They use rigor in their arguments, build upon appropriate literature, and reach conclusions that will have an impact on research and practice.
Submission Deadline: March 31, 2008. Papers should be submitted electronically to
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tem-ieee. The cover letter should indicate that the paper is being submitted to the special issue on innovation in emerging economies. Initial editorial decisions will be reached in June, and publication should occur in 2009.
