    Call for Proposals

    Submission Deadline: December 15, 2007

The Product Development & Management Association (PDMA) announces a competition for research proposals on the topic of product development and innovation management. PDMA is especially interested in research that will contribute significantly to the field of product development and/or to the practice of product development management.

    Evaluation Process

Proposals will be reviewed on topic importance, conceptual development, methodological rigor, originality and fit with PDMA mission. Constructive comments will be provided back to proposers for all submissions. Funding decisions are expected to be complete by February 15, 2008.

    The Awards

PDMA will grant up to 2 awards of up to $ 5,000 each to winning proposals. Research teams will receive $ 4,000 upon award announcement. The final $ 1000 will be paid upon submission of a manuscript to the Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM) for publication consideration. Submission funding expires 3 years after notification of project funding. Both awards will provide researchers with access to the PDMA membership list for survey purposes. Those who use the PDMA membership list are required to provide a summary report of findings to PDMA respondents within 9 months of fielding the survey. Recipients of PDMA grants may be asked to present the results of their research at PDMA's International Conference, with conference and travel expenses to be paid by PDMA.

Research Development Funding Program for Technology and Innovation Research Projects

The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Technology Innovation Program[1] and the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago are pleased to announce a Research Development Funding Program for social science scholars interested in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship research using a unique new source of firm level data available through the NORC data enclave (<http://dataenclave.norc.org > ). Research funding will be awarded in amounts up to $25,000 for the 2008-2009 program. There are three types of funding categories:

    1.       Dissertations: for junior scholars wishing to use NIST innovation datasets through the enclave to write dissertations

    2.       Database improvements: for scholars willing to improve the quality of NIST innovation data by merging outside datasets, and providing documentation for other researchers

    3.       Methodological information that can be used to provide information for the Technology Innovation Program.  These might include

         Defining and measuring critical national needs and societal benefits.

         Examining the role of collaboration among firms and other organizations undertaking high-risk R&D projects.

         Exploring the technology innovation process within firms.

         Expanding our understanding of the role of public-private partnerships (federal, state, and local) on regional innovation.

         Developing evaluation metrics and procedures whereby the process of innovation can be measured

Researchers will be required to report on research progress and to share preliminary findings that may be of interest to the program. They will present a final paper at NORC-sponsored conference in Fall 2009 to present their findings. Papers will be published as NIST working papers, which does not preclude publication in journals.

The deadline to apply for research funding to use NIST data through the data enclave is December 31, 2007 . Research proposals should consist of the following

    1.       Identification of the category into which the proposal falls

    2.       A description of the proposed work (up to ten pages)

    3.       The CV of the researcher

    4.       A budget together with a narrative justification

More information about the data enclave is available at http://dataenclave.norc.org/. You may also contact Tim Mulcahy, the Program Manager, at 202-223-3789. To get on the mailing list for updates about the data enclave or on scholarship availability, please register at dataenclave@NORC.org.

[1] In August 2007, the American Competes Act (PUBLIC LAW 110–69) created a new Technology Innovation Program (TIP). The purpose of the Technology Innovation Program is to assist United States businesses and institutions of higher education or other organizations, such as national laboratories and nonprofit research institutions, to support, promote, and accelerate innovation in the United States through high-risk, high-reward research in areas of critical national need that deal with major societal challenges.

15TH INTERNATIONAL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE

    PLACE DE BROUCKÈRE-PLEIN - 31 - 1000 BRUSSELS - BELGIUM - Tel: 32 2 2266660 - Fax: 32 2 5121929

    <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">HAMBURG</st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">GERMANY</st1:country-region></st1:place>, JUNE 29-JULY 1ST, 2008

    Background

Product innovation is increasingly considered to be a central source for competitive advantage and a crucial driver for economic growth. Corporations are trying to face the challenges of global competition by launching new products that better satisfy explicit and latent user needs and desires, and that have improved performance, superior functionality, lower cost, higher symbolic and emotional value, and sustainable impact on the environment.

In this scenario, companies are seeking to understand how new products may be conceived and developed successfully. Managing product development is a major challenge because of its inherent uncertain, complex and multidisciplinary nature. Product development requires the management of creative resources and experimental processes with uncertain outputs. Also, it requires the management of many different types of interfaces: both interactions between different units within a firm (marketing, research, manufacturing, etc.) and interactions with external actors, being them users, suppliers, partners, designers, or universities. The interfaces today cross the borders of countries and continents. Different types of knowledge, competencies, attitudes and values have to work together.

In the last years the list of challenges has been extended by the emergence of communities of experts who are developing new ideas and even products beside traditional firms. It becomes more important to understand how they work and how companies can cooperate with them .

Research on product development management is challenged by this uncertain, complex and multidisciplinary nature. In order to understand the dynamics of new product conception and development, scholars have increasingly to operate across different disciplines: strategy, management of innovation, technology and R&D management, project management, research policy, marketing, design, anthropology, sociology, organization, operations management, etc.

    Who Should Attend

The conference is a unique opportunity for researchers of different backgrounds, but with a common interest on management of product development, to up-date and exchange views. The conference will provide ample opportunities for both formal and informal discussions of the work presented, as well as opportunities for discussions about future international and interdisciplinary research co-operation.

Participants are encouraged to present results of their own work (although presenting is not a requirement for attendance and active participation). The focus of the conference is on management issues. Priority is given to research, which has an empirical basis. The theoretical base must be made clear, and references to already-existing research in the field must be made explicit.

International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (IJEIM)

    Call For papers

Special Issue on: "Innovative University Programs in Technology Business Incubation"

To compete in the new economy, a number of universities have been actively involved in designing and implementing innovative programs for promoting regional innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the past three decades, one salient approach has been the development of formal technology business incubation mechanisms. The goal of these university-based and university-sponsored organizational mechanisms is to serve as conduits facilitating the spillover of university knowledge through enterprise creation and commercialization of research results.

Some of these technology business incubation mechanisms are developed and run by the universities themselves; others are offered in partnership with public and private organizations in the community. In all cases, their objective is to create more comprehensive and integrative incubation spaces in and around the university campuses aimed at providing seamless innovation milieus.

This special issue will feature high quality research that explores various innovative models of these formal university incubation mechanisms in developed as well as emerging regions of the world. Preferred submissions will chronicle cases where an entrepreneurial university serves as the initiator and/or locus of regional innovation and entrepreneurship.

    Subject Coverage

Potential topic areas suitable for review articles include but are not limited to:

    • Business/technology incubators
    • Science/research/technology parks

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

On behalf of the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS), we would like to draw your attention to the call for papers on "Working across boundaries: The upsetting effects of offshoring on the dynamics of knowledge intensive work," a sub-theme of the 24th EGOS Colloquium, Upsetting Organizations, to be held in Amsterdam, July 10-12, 2008. This EGOS sub-theme is convened by Bart van den Hooff (<st1:city w:st="on">Vrige Universiteit</st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Netherlands</st1:country-region>), Elisa Mattarelli, (University of <st1:city w:st="on">Modena</st1:city> and Reggio Emilia, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Italy</st1:country-region>), Maria Rita Tagliavento (<st1:city w:st="on">University of Bologna</st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Italy</st1:country-region>), and Suzanne Weisband (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">University of Arizona</st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">USA</st1:country-region></st1:place>).

Offshoring, or the relocation of knowledge intensive work and services to emerging countries, is becoming a part of our everyday social lexicon. Nevertheless, in the academic literature, we still find little empirical evidence on the implications of offshoring for organizations and knowledge workers, or on the disruptive forces that offshoring brings to local, day-to-day work practices. The objective of this sub-theme is to further the discussion on the organizational implications of offshoring of services and knowledge intensive work. Coherent with the conference's theme, we invite contributions that focus on the upsetting effects of offshoring on organizational dynamics and routines.

Our purpose in organizing this sub-theme is to provide  a forum for organization and information systems researchers to discuss this topic with colleagues from around the world.

Details on this sub-theme can be found at: http://www.egosnet.org/conferences/collo24/sub_35.shtml.  Also, please check the EGOS Colloquium website: http://www.egosnet.org/.

The Centre facilitates successful technology transfer efforts from universities and research institutes in <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> and the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">UK</st1:place></st1:country-region>. Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre

The Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC) is a five year programme of research looking at innovation in health service delivery and in particular the way that this may influence the infrastructure to support the delivery of healthcare services. Qinetiq

The QinetiQ chair in technology transfer and entrepreneurship seeks to understand the processes of technological innovation and entrepreneurship in "technology-push" environments. In addition, the chair carries out research in high-growth entrepreneurship, in new venture internationalisation, and in corporate venturing. Funded by the ESRC/AIM (Advanced Institute of Management), the research will examine how large project-based firms in different industries are creating standardised, scalable and repeatable product and service components for the provision of integrated solutions.
