    CALL FOR PAPERS

The Department of Strategic Management &

Business Environment invites papers for the conference:

"TOWARDS THE MICRO-LEVEL ORIGINS OF ORGANIZATIONAL ROUTINES AND CAPABILITIES"

June 12 and 13, 2009, Rotterdam School of Management, Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Academic key notes: Nicolai Foss (Copenhagen Business School), Sid Winter (Wharton), and

    Maurizio Zollo (Bocconi)

"At present the origin of routines and capabilities is as vague as their existence." (Felin and Foss:

    2005: 5).

"... the need for a better understanding of the origins of capabilities becomes increasingly

apparent." (Zollo and Winter, 2002: 339)

The Call for Micro-level Origins of Routines and Capabilities

Nelson and Winter's (1982) seminal work on evolutionary economics, as well as the Carnegie

School (March and Simon, 1958; Cyert and March, 1963), has inspired a large literature on the role that routines, resources and capabilities play in our understanding of firm-level behavioral,

structural and performance heterogeneity. However, the majority of studies directed at these

phenomena rely on aggregated proxies to explain firm-level heterogeneity. Whether one buys a

reductionist view of scientific inquiry or not – the view that reduction is at the heart of scientific

progress", Elster (1989: 74) – it is a fact that a description of how individual and group-level

processes enable and/or hinder the development of organizational routines and capabilities is still under-developed (Felin and Foss, 2005).

For example, recent attempts to decipher the role of cognition (Gavetti, 2005) and deliberate

learning processes (Zollo and Winter, 2002) as a complement to the automaticity of routine

behavior in firms' learning processes mark initial attempts to develop a better understanding of the micro-level origins of collective knowledge. On a related agenda, the study of managerial attention as driving choice and search efforts (Ocasio, 1997; Cho and Hambrick, 2006) appears to be particularly relevant for uncovering the microfoundations of organizational evolution.

Further, the role of motivation in the development of organizational interest alignment, and ultimately of firm advantage (Gottschalg and Zollo, 2007), might offer another approach to shed light into the individual antecedents of organizational competence. Alternatively, sources of deliberate or experiential learning that for example provide acquisition or alliance-related advantages (e.g. Zollo and Singh, 2004; Heimeriks, Duysters and Vanhaverbeke, 2007; McDonald, Westphal and Graebner, forthcoming) also comprise a promising avenue. However, direct efforts to explicitly explore the interdependence of different levels of analysis in organizational learning outcomes remain surprisingly rare (Reagans, Argote and Brooks, 2005). In particular, understanding key micro-macro (individual-organization) linkages in routine and capability development is an understudied area with significant promise.

As noted by Coleman (1990: 3): "A system's behavior [such as an organization] is in fact resultant

of the actions of its component parts [such as individuals]." Hence, overall there is a need for

research detailing the microfoundations of routines and capabilities, to understand the

characteristics and behavior and interaction of actors within a social system. To fill this gap, this

Conference solicits papers that explore and analyze 'the basic elements' (Lippman and Rumelt, 2003) that drive differences in learning and capability development between organizations.

Some exemplary questions Without seeking to limit the range of research topics, a number of important questions such as the following are left unanswered:

    1. What are the (micro-level) origins of organizational capabilities and knowledge?

    2. How do insights on individual and group traits and processes enrich our understanding of origins of routines and capability development?

    3. How do individual-level factors (such as traits, abilities or motivation) aggregate to create collective capabilities?

    4. What are the microfoundations of recurrent action patterns that shape organizational learning curves?

    5. What are the cognitive, motivational and behavioral antecedents of organizational learning rates and collective knowledge creation?

    6. What is the relevance of and interplay between mindful and less mindful learning processes

    in shaping organizational learning?

    7. How do initial organizational or institutional conditions influence subsequent individual and

    group-level search and learning processes?

    8. What is the relationship between individuals, organizational forms and collective learning?

For example, how does learning aggregate or emerge under various governance structures?

    9. What is the role of individual and group traits and processes in learning (or inhibiting learning) for tasks with different levels of complexity and interdependence?

    10. What are the micro-level origins of rules and codes?

    11. What is the process by which rules and codes are translated into individual actions? And what micro-level factors drive the adoption or rejection of rules and codes?

    12. What individual and group traits and processes explain the precise execution of an organizational routine, as well as its adaption in execution?

    13. Is there an 'optimal routine' or arrow core (Winter and Szulanski, 2001) and what are the micro-mechanisms facilitating knowledge transfer?

    14. How do individuals and groups balance the investments in routinization, deliberation, problem-solving and exploration processes to enhance collective effectiveness? How are these processes learned and how do they evolve?

    15. What individual and group conditions explain when routines are likely to act as levers of change versus causes of inertia?

    16. What individual and group traits explain the effectiveness of knowledge variation, selection and retention processes?

    17. What individual and group characteristics influence the firm's ability to sense, respond to

and shape environmental change and feedback?

    Welcome!

The purpose of this conference is to bring together world-class scholars from different disciplines to advance our understanding of micro-level origins of organizational routines and capabilities. This Call seeks to encourage fresh interest in the topic of micro-foundations by soliciting papers from various disciplines such as sociology, economics, management sciences, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy and linguistics. In particular, contributions that address the questions raised above (or related ones) in either a rigorous conceptual form or empirical setting are welcome. All empirical methods – including qualitative, quantitative, field, meta-analytical, and multi-method approaches – are considered. Authors are asked to present original, insightful, interesting, important and theoretically bold research. Demonstration of a significant empirical and theoretical contribution is crucial. Participants will benefit from in-depth feedback and discussion.

The conference features the following key-note speakers: Nicolai Foss (Copenhagen Business

School), Sid Winter (Wharton), and Maurizio Zollo (Bocconi). Plenary paper sessions with two

discussants per paper help provide constructive in-depth reviews. We will conclude with a plenary panel session. The conference will end with a conference dinner.

    Deadlines

Authors are invited to submit full papers before March 1st 2009 to the conference organizer Koen Heimeriks (kheimeriks@rsm.nl). The papers will be accepted on a rolling basis based on relevance to theme, rigor and potential for contributing to the Conference (the notification deadline is April 1st). The final papers will be uploaded on the conference website before the conference. Participants without papers should notify of their intent to attend before May 15, 2009.

    Practicalities

There is no conference fee. Hotel accommodation for paper presenters will be covered for 2 nights. Travel is not covered. For administrative issues, please contact Patricia de Wilde-Mes

(pwilde@rsm.nl). For other questions, please contact the conference organizer Koen Heimeriks

(kheimeriks@rsm.nl). Additional information can be found and will be uploaded at the conference website: www.erim.nl/capabilityconference.

Special Issue on Corporate Social Responsibility in the Global Economy

    Guest Editors:

David Atkinson, Helsinki School of Economics, Mikkeli Campus, Finland and

Gabriele Suder, CERAM Business School Nice - Sophia Antipolis, France

The concept and practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR) at the international level has evolved in a relatively short period of time, yet a wide array of actors and organizations have emerged that have, in turn, brought about many issues and strategies. Cumulatively, the contemporary milieu of CSR holds significant promises but also considerable challenges.

Corporate stakeholders - established and new - have attempted to restructure corporate decision making and force more socially responsible business organizations. Shareholders activists have made efforts to influence corporate strategies in different ways. Non-governmental organizations have entered the business arena with multiple strategies to influence corporate behavior. Consumers, who potentially hold powerful influence over corporate success, have played only occasional roles in CSR. The role of the state is seen as both facilitator and regulator with regard to international corporate behavior.

Many strategies and issues have been posed in the broad area of corporate social responsibility and have now reached a kind of plateau in development. Numerous international standard-setting strategies, for example, have been advanced yet concurrence among participants seems distant.  The nature and type of stakeholders important in decision-making is being challenged. While business has responded to many of the demands brought about by concerns over socially responsible business, the demand for more change is still sought and will likely not go away. Overall, the nature of business is being challenged, thus encouraging the development of new value-creation objectives for firms.

The aim of this special issue is to capture the current state of corporate social responsibility around the globe, applying unique perspectives and analyses. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are encouraged. Papers also should point to the future of corporate social responsibility with particular emphasis on how best to advance the arguments, methods, and effectiveness of CSR.  Advancement of CSR effectiveness also includes linkages to other fields of business management research.

    Subject Coverage

Examples of topics appropriate to the theme of corporate social responsibility include:

    - The language and rhetoric of Corporate Social Responsibility

    - The role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in CSR, with implications for effective stakeholder involvement

    - The role of consumers in CSR

-Multinational corporations and the recognition of human rights

    - The role of CSR in the reduction of conflict and of overall uncertainty in the geopolitical business environment

    - Corporate-State interface in CSR, with emphasis on roles and implications of roles

    - Social responsibility as management and decision-making tools

-Corporate codes of conduct - their usefulness and effectiveness

    - CSR as a marketing tool with implications for effectiveness

-Setting international standards of corporate behavior - who sets them, how are they enforced?

    - Corporate accountability - voluntary compliance or legal enforcement?

    - Whither the role of SMEs in corporate social responsibility?

    - CSR and organizational change - organizational behavior, strategy and development

    - The strategy and policy implications of corporate philanthropy

    - Assessments of major regional and cultural entities in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, South America

    - Assessments of developed countries vis-à-vis developing countries regarding CSR

    - Maintaining effective CSR strategies in supply chain management

    - Integrating  sustainability (social, environmental, economic) with profit- making

    Special Issue Theme:

BALANCING ETHICS, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND EMPLOYEE/EMPLOYER RIGHTS

The struggle between balancing legal rights, ethics and social responsibility is a challenge for employers, particularly in the complex, post-ENRON business environment.  Increasingly organizations see corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a competitive advantage in considering not just financial measures of success, but also ethical and socially responsible measures of success.  This special issue is dedicated to understanding how organizations successfully develop strategies to do what is legally acceptable, but also go beyond the legal minimums to consider the ethical and societal implications of their actions.  Topics may span from the micro level, including employee relations and HR practices to the macro level, including corporate strategy and interorganizational alliances and relationships.  We welcome manuscripts that explore, but are not limited to, such topics as:

    Triple Bottom Line

    Ethics and emerging technology

Health and financial obligations to retirees

    Developing ethical employee management systems

    Strategic philanthropy

    Ethics in a team-based culture

The relationship of ethical work climates to retention and recruiting

Organizational commitment to ethics and social responsibility

    Training for ethics and CSR

Understanding prejudices and biases from an ethical frame

    Moral psychology and cognitive development

    National culture and ethics/CSR expectations

Trans-national ethical perspectives on the employee/employer relationship

We encourage and will consider qualitative, quantitative and theory papers, and evaluate based on: 1) representation of the theme for the special issue, 2) theoretical contribution to the literature, and 3) implications for management practice.  All manuscripts will be double-blind reviewed.

All inquiries and submitted manuscripts should be emailed to the Guest Editors at ERRJSpecialIssue@siue.edu by October 1, 2008, with decisions made by early 2009, for publication later in 2009.  Please ensure you have a cover page with contact information and then a title/abstract page that is author blind in your submitted manuscript.

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management

    Special Issue:
"The Impacts of Global Information Systems Sourcing on Engineering, Technology and Innovation Management"

    Guest Editors:
Leslie Willcocks, London School of Economics
Joseph Rottman, University of Missouri – St. Louis
    Julia Kotlarsky, Warwick Business School
Ilan Oshri, Rotterdam School of Management

The special issue will focus on the topic of Global Information Systems sourcing with a specific interest in social, managerial and knowledge-related aspects of IS sourcing and how these aspects affect engineering, technology and innovation management. Managing a global team of software engineers is akin to managing a global team of engineers of other kinds.  Global delivery of IS services encompasses both the relocation of effort as well as the utilization of talent located across the globe.  This special issue aims to bring together viewpoints from various disciplines, including International Business, Strategy, Information Systems and Organizational Behavior.

We invite research articles and focus on practice papers that investigate social, managerial and knowledge-related topics in global outsourcing/offshoring relationships. In particular, the special issue will endeavor to present the view of managers from both the client and vendor perspectives. Some of the specific themes that are of interest in this special issue are:

    - Critical issues in engineering and innovation management tasked with engaging a global supplier network and workforce

    - Knowledge management systems, codification processes and their impact on outsourcing performance

    - Emerging concepts such as Open Sourcing and their consideration from social, managerial and knowledge perspectives

    - People retention issues and implications for success of global IT sourcing arrangements

    - Retained management capabilities from a social and knowledge perspective

    - Social capital in global sourcing arrangements

    - Multi - cultural aspects in outsourcing/offshoring relationships

    - Emerging sourcing markets such as China, South America, Africa and Eastern Europe.

We are interested in including papers that are both conceptual and empirically based. In terms of empirical data, we seek papers that report on outsourcing/offshoring arrangements from regions that have so far been poorly represented in the existing literature such as Latin American, Eastern Europe, Caribbean countries, China and others. In terms of conceptual papers and theoretical frameworks, we seek to contribute to theory building by both reapplying existing frameworks and developing new constructs that help explaining social, managerial and knowledge-related aspects in global sourcing.

In addition to the standard double blind review process at IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, authors may select to use the presentation of their papers at the Third Annual Information Systems Workshop on Global Sourcing (http://www.globalsourcing.org.uk/ March 2009) as part of the preparation of their papers for the special issue. However, the workshop and the special issue are not connected and participation in the workshop is not required for consideration for the special issue.

     Call for Papers

Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing

Special Issue on "International Sports Marketing"

Guest Editors: Vanessa Ratten and Hamish Ratten

    http://info.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/call_for_papers.htm?id=660

Sport is an international business orientated industry. Sporting organizations offer a number of marketing campaigns to businesses and organizations in order to compete globally. An important part of the sport industry is retaining and attracting businesses and organizations (Farrelly and Quester, 2005). Sports clubs do this by offering a variety of different marketing ideas designed to attract different business demographics. It is vital for academics and practitioners in the sports industry to understand which business and industrial orientated factors are the most successful in encouraging business and organizational loyalty. The aim of this special journal issue is to understand in more detail the way business and industrial marketing works in the sports industry.

In the United States sport is the eleventh largest industry and impacts many other sectors such as technology and education (Danylchuk, Doherty, Nicholson and Stewart, 2008). Much of the marketing that occurs in the sport industry is business related as sports teams such as those in the NBA, NHL and MLB market their products and services to other businesses (Irwin, Zwick and Sutton, 1999). Likewise non-profit sporting organizations and universities market themselves to corporate sponsors. The way sporting companies and organizations utilize marketing strategies to businesses differs from the way they interact with the general public (Wolfe, Meenaghan and O'Sullivan, 2002).

Often the business and industrial marketing that occurs in sporting organizations revolves around international brand management and global networks (Olkkonen, 2001). International business-to-business marketing is an important part of the global economy (Johnston and Spekman, 1995). We hope the special journal issue will encourage debate on issues related to business and industrial marketing from diverse sporting industry contexts from around the world. Particularly interesting is the difference between business-to-business marketing in emerging and developed economies (Pels, Brodie and Johnston, 2004).

Papers from academics and practitioners in the sports field are sought. The special issue will examine how a company or organization in the sports industry or involved with sports markets its goods/services/ideas to another company or organization. Papers that take an interdisciplinary perspective in understanding business-to-business and industrial marketing in the sports industry are encouraged. Contributions to this special issue should present new theories or research about business and industrial marketing in the sports context. All types of research paradigms including case studies, qualitative and quantitative analysis, conceptual and empirical research are welcome. Examples of possible topics that will be examined in the special industry include:

What the quality of business-to-business marketing is in the sports industry?

How to plan business-to-business marketing in sports?

What are international comparative examples of sports business-to-business marketing?

How to market successfully in sports?

What are the latest and most innovative business-to-business marketing practices in sports?

What important insights into sports-based business-to-business marketing behavior are there?

How does non-profit business-to-business marketing differ to profit business-to-business marketing in sports?

What competition in sports does there exist between business-to-business marketing firms?

What distribution channels are involved in selling sports related products and services to other businesses?

What is the role of media distribution in sports?

What does new product development between sporting organizations and other businesses contain?

How to organize sports marketing for international growth?

What types of relationship marketing exists in sports?

How can you manage a successful salesforce in sports?

What is the buying culture of sports related products?

Process for the submission of papers:

Papers submitted must not have been published, accepted for publication, or presently be under consideration for publication. Submissions should be approximately 6,000 words in length. Submissions to the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing must be made using the ScholarOne Manuscript Central system: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jbim .  A separate title page must be uploaded containing the title, author/s, and contact information for the author(s). For additional guidelines please see the "Notes for Contributors" from a recent issue of the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing, or see the home page at www.emeraldinsight.com/jbim.htm . Suitable articles will be subjected to a double-blind review; hence authors should not identify themselves in the body of the paper.

    CALL FOR PAPERS

"Interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary career studies"

A Special Issue of HUMAN RELATIONS
    Submission Deadline: November 30, 2008

Guest editors: Svetlana N. Khapova (VU University Amsterdam) and Michael B. Arthur (Suffolk University, Boston)

Contemporary careers unfold in a knowledge-based, global economy that reflects persistent interaction between careers and institutions. In this context, the career – the evolving sequence of a person's work experiences over time - is not only a script for personal development, but also a source in enabling new communities (such as in open source programming), a reason for a shared learning agenda (like that of a professional community of practice), or a source of inspiration behind new global initiatives (as for example behind philanthropic or ideological endeavors). These careers involve a) shifting boundaries in occupational, organizational, national and global work arrangements; b) higher uncertainty through the rapid generation of knowledge and the unpredictability of its effects; and c) greater individual agency, as a response to shifting boundaries and uncertainty, and as a means to integrate wider combinations of job experiences into a single career (Arthur, in press). The characteristics of contemporary careers raise questions about the suitability of traditional uni-disciplinary research approaches to career studies. This call suggests that to better appreciate changing careers, we need to change the way we study them.

The characteristics of contemporary careers call for more "imaginative" approaches to careers research (Abbott, 2004) that transcend traditional assumptions. New approaches are necessary if the dynamic links among careers, occupations, organizations and the global knowledge-driven economy are to be better understood. Rather than assuming the world as stable, and amenable to uni-disciplinary research inquiry, we need to assume the world as dynamic, and calling for interdisciplinary inquiry. An emphasis on interdisciplinary inquiry can take us beyond, for example, the application and re-application of psychological theories of occupational choice or sociological theories of organizational socialization that say little about the dynamic context in which choices and socialization occur. This special issue invites contributions that respond to a call for fresh interdisciplinary approaches, and also demonstrate the potential that interdisciplinary inquiry holds for the greater understanding of contemporary career phenomena.

In calling for more imaginative approaches, we are looking for papers that lead us beyond the constraints of traditional research approaches. How, for example, can we better appreciate the interdependence of open source software investments and the potential outcomes for people's careers? How can we see how pressing social problems influence career choices that in turn help shape the nature of society? What fresh examples about contemporary careers can help us to better see the shifting connections between careers and the host economy? What possibilities exist for more satisfactory interpretation of learning within people's careers and its further consequences? For example, the imaginative approaches we seek may involve one or more of the following:

    1. Greater variation in methodologies. It is common for different traditions to employ distinctive research methodologies. However, a broader base of methodologies, or adoption of combined methodologies, may provide a better understanding of how careers both shape and in turn are shaped by the environment. What methodologies can help us here?
    2. A wider research agenda. Career studies can lead us beyond the examination of individual working lives. A wider view can help us appreciate how career-relevant communities, such as open source software communities, or communities built around race, gender, social stigma and so on can influence workplace allegiances. What research agenda items appear most pressing?
    3. More longitudinal research designs. Traditional research designs based on cross-sectional approaches favor the examination of one-way cause-effect relationships, and in turn uni-disciplinary interpretations. How can longitudinal research designs provide interdisciplinary insights into careers not visible through traditional approaches?
    4. More instructive interdisciplinary conversations. It is relatively straightforward to extend research in an established discipline, but harder to promote conversations among an interdisciplinary audience. How can we better connect, for example, between psychological and sociological views on individual identity? What kinds of research leadership can contribute to healthier interdisciplinary conversations?

The editors invite contributions to the above or to further questions that can be usefully raised in examining contemporary careers. Most fundamentally, we seek papers, either theoretical or empirical, that offer fresh contributions to the existing literature and its underlying assumptions. We also seek papers that break new ground and outline new directions for interdisciplinary conversation and careers research.

    CALL FOR CASES
    Submission Deadline: 10/31/2008
    Full Chapters Due: 3/31/2009

Cases on Knowledge-Enabled Customer Relationship Management: Business Models and Experiences
A book edited by Prof. Minwir Al-Shammari, University of Bahrain, Kingdom of Bahrain

    Introduction
Following the transformation of organizations from "product-centric" to "customer-centric" ones, the importance of customers has created tough competition among rivals over acquiring, retaining, and/or expanding relationship with customers. In particular, customer knowledge has been utilized as a major weapon to maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty and gain sustainable competitive advantage. In order to build good customer relations and continue to serve each customer in his/her preferred way, knowledge-enabled customer relationship management (KCRM) is imperative. KCRM is conceived as a business strategy, rather than a
technological solution, that results from the integration of major intervention techniques and methodologies rooted in Knowledge Management (KM), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems.

The Overall Objective of the Book
Implementation of KCRM as a new business model has not been published in a case book so far. This case book aims at developing an understanding of KCRM models and practices through a compilation of successes as well as failures in implementing KCRM "real-world" applications. The book also addresses the application of KCRM in the public sector context and in that of developing countries. The case book intends to address the topic of KCRM business change from a holistic and strategic perspective that emphasizes the role of organizational elements of people, processes, and technology.

    The Target Audience
The proposed KCRM case book will be a major source of knowledge to academics and professionals in the areas of knowledge management, customer relationship management, and information systems.

Recommended topics for cases include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • KCRM strategic analysis
    • KCRM design and development
    • KCRM implementation
    • KCRM and integration of customer contact/delivery channels
    • KCRM and supply chains
    • KCRM and knowledge sharing culture
    • KCRM and organizational learning
    • KCRM and communities of practice/creation
    • KCRM and performance metrics
    • KCRM and project management
    • KCRM and the role of people, processes, and technology
    • KCRM and organizational change
    • KCRM in e-commerce settings
    • KCRM in Governmental context
    • KCRM in globalized/cross-cultural context

    Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit no later than October 31, 2008, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed case. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by November 30, 2008 about the status of their proposals and sent case organizational guidelines. Full cases are expected to be submitted by March 31, 2009. All submitted cases will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the "Information Science Reference" (formerly Idea Group Reference) and "Medical Information

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deadline for submission: March 1, 2009

The Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM) is planning to publish a special issue on "Decision Making in New Product Development and Innovation." Recognizing the importance of new products and innovation to organizations, the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA) has sponsored and funded three major studies identifying "best practices."  These studies focus on the number and types of activities conducted by firms during the new product development (NPD) process and the relationships between the proficiency in executing these activities and new product and firm performance.  Although these studies have greatly increased our understanding about activities, they have neglected the second aspect of NPD and innovation processes that are fundamental to success-NPD and innovation decisions, which are critical because of the considerable resource commitments and opportunity costs involved in developing and commercializing products. Furthermore, such decisions determine the set of products a firm commercializes, ultimately impacting profitability.

Relatively little past research has focused on decision making in NPD and innovation. Studies have focused on the various types of evaluative criteria and dimensions used at different points in the process, the usage and relative importance of these criteria at different points, the relative association between the various dimensions of decision making criteria and new product performance, and problems likely to be associated with decision making practices.  These prior studies have provided important insight regarding the use and importance of different evaluative criteria and dimensions at the various decision points, but gaps remain. For example, an important conclusion from this research is that the criteria and dimensions used, as well as the formality of the evaluation processes, vary across firms.  What causes this variation?  How are the evaluative criteria and dimensions chosen?  Also, what is the role of decisions in controlling projects?  The proper amount of control is paramount.  Allowing too many projects to make it to the market is problematic just like killing off too many NPD projects prior to completion.  Selecting the best opportunities to pursue is difficult, and controlling NPD projects is essential to effective use of scarce resources and the avoidance of escalation of commitment.

The main objective of the special issue is to advance our understanding of NPD and innovation decision making for individual projects and products as well as project and product portfolios at corporate, business-unit, and alliance levels.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

The number and timing of review points.

The number and type of review criteria.

    Decision-maker characteristics.

Differences in review practices by product type (incremental and radical products) and functional area (marketing, technical, and financial).

The association between review practices, proficiency, and new product performance.

Identification of leading indicators able to provide early warning signals of process problems.

The role of metrics in decisions (number, type, etc.).

Problem reporting and "whistle-blowing" during failing NPD projects.

Differences across industry settings (business-to-business [B2B] vs. business-to-customer [B2C]) or countries/cultures as they pertain to selecting and controlling NPD projects.

Composition, policies, and practices among project authorization committees (or review teams).

Communication methods used by decision-makers and their efficacy.

    Call for Papers

Special Issue of Technology Analysis and Strategic Management

on "Technology Transfer: The Practice and the Profession"

and workshop at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University,

    The Netherland

    3-4 December, 2008

Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a new profession often referred to as the technology transfer (TT) manager. Technology transfer managers apply various skills to accomplish technology transfer activities such as legal competencies; marketing and negotiation competencies; team work competencies; innovation competencies; and knowledge management competencies. Furthermore, the transfer of technology takes place in various contexts such as universities, business entities and governmental
institutions, resulting in the development of unique and specialized skills-bases within TT organizations and units.

This special issue will focus on the profession of technology transfer. In particular, the special issue will examine the emergence of the technology transfer profession and the impact on the practice of technology transfer at the organizational, regional and national level. We invite research articles and 'focus on practice' papers that investigate aspects relating to the profession of technology transfer. In particular, the special issue will endeavor to present the view of managers from both the profession and the practice perspective. Some of the specific themes that are of interest in this special issue are:
    - Which skills are imperative for technology transfer at the individual and organizational level?
    - How various contexts change the importance of technology transfer skills at the individual level and the competencies at the organizational level?
    - In what ways the emergence of the technology transfer profession has shaped technology transfer practices at the organizational level?
    - What factors explain the relationship between technology transfer skills and organizational performance at regional and national level?
    - In what ways policy makers shape the profession of technology transfer?

We are interested in including papers that are both conceptual and empirically based. In terms of empirical data, we seek papers that reflect on the skills-base/competencies of technology transfer managers in various contexts. In terms of conceptual papers and theoretical frameworks, we seek to contribute to theory building by both reapplying existing frameworks and developing new constructs that help explaining technology transfer as a practice as well as a profession.

In addition to the standard double blind review process at Technology Analysis and Strategic Management, authors have to present their ideas at the 'Technology Transfer: The Practice and Profession' Workshop, which will be held at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, December 3rd – 4th 2008.  The Workshop will help authors to further develop their ideas for the special issue. Please note that we reserved a small venue for the Workshop and therefore will be able to accept up to 25 papers (about 30 participants).

    Submission guidelines:
Please submit your extended abstract (5 pages, font 12, double spaced) to Patricia de Wilde-Mes (PMes@rsm.nl) no later than November 2nd 2008 by 17:00 CET. Authors will be notified whether their abstract was accepted by November 7th 2008.
    Other matters:
    -  No registration fees
    - Accommodation: We reserved 30 guest rooms at a special price of 110 euro per night at Novotel, Rotterdam.
    - The program will be sent out by middle November 2008

Special issue call for papers – Competitiveness Review

    Guest Editor:

    A. N. M. Waheeduzzaman

The spectacular growth of emerging nations during the last 25 years situates them to be the ideal target for competitiveness inquiry. Globalization forces, commonly denoted by openness, trade liberalization and political reforms facilitate their accelerated growth. MNCs, in particular, have been instrumental in strengthening the economic growth in the emerging nations through international trade, investment and production. The special issue aims at investigating these issues. Possible topics are as follows:

§  Theoretical and empirical models explaining how competitiveness of emerging nations differs from other groups (e.g., developed or developing).

§  Role of political, social, and cultural factors affecting competitiveness.

§  Relationship with globalization, political and economic freedom, governance, inequality or environment (e.g., global warming).

§  Methodological difficulties in measuring competitiveness. Evaluate Growth Competitiveness Index (GCI) by the World Economic Forum or other measures.

§  How international trade, direct investment, and production decisions of MNCs affect competitiveness.

Authors are requested to submit manuscripts to the guest editor electronically (e-mail: Waheed@tamucc.edu) along with a hard copy mailed to the following address:

The Management Group in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University invites applications for multiple tenure track positions starting July 2009. The positions will be filled at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Management.

About the Management Group: The Management Group currently consists of 14 tenured or tenure track faculty members and 6 practice track faculty members. They work across the following research areas: international business, strategic management, entrepreneurship, macro-organisational theory and technology and innovation management. They are drawn from leading universities in the United States and Europe such as Carnegie-Mellon, HBS, INSEAD, LBS, MIT, Oxford, Tilburg, Tufts, RPI, UCLA and Wharton. The Management Group is largely composed of young, active researchers who have been able to create a strong research culture and a collegial working atmosphere. Further information about the faculty members is available on http://www.business.smu.edu.sg/faculty/index_discgrp.asp?discgrp=MGMT.

Working conditions and compensation are comparable to major research universities in the United States. Supports for conference, research grants, and a visiting scholar programme are generous. The normal teaching load is four sections/courses. Entry level positions have a reduced teaching load of three sections and have in the past taught them all in one term.

About Singapore Management University and Lee Kong Chian School of Business: Since its incorporation in 2000, Singapore Management University (SMU) has established undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that aim to produce leaders and creative entrepreneurs capable of excelling in a rapidly changing and dynamic world. Set up as Singapore's first private university offering a style of education modelled after The Wharton School, SMU occupies a state-of-the-art city campus located in the heart of Singapore's civic, cultural and business districts. Today, SMU is home to more than 6,000 students and 240 faculty members and comprises six schools: the School of Accountancy; Lee Kong Chian School of Business; School of Economics; School of Information Systems; School of Law; and School of Social Sciences. SMU's vision is to be a premier university, internationally recognised for its world class research and distinguished teaching. Lee Kong Chian School of Business is the largest of SMU's six schools. The school is home to around 3,000 students and around 100 faculty members. A milestone in the school's development was the launch of the MBA programme in 2008.

Application deadline and procedure: The application deadline is October 31, 2008. Applicants should submit (1) a letter with their research and teaching statement, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) examples of research, (4) evidence of teaching ability, if available, and (5) three letters of reference. Please excuse cross postings.

The Department of Organization and Strategy at Tilburg University invites applications for multiple tenure track positions starting in 2009. The rank for at least one of the positions is open, but we expect to fill several of the positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are able to hire faculty to start in any month during 2009.

The Department of Organization and Strategy currently consists of 19 tenured or tenure track faculty members and 8 lecturers. They work in the following research areas: strategic management, international management, operations management, and management and organization theory. They are drawn from leading universities in the United States, Asia and Europe. The Department has a very strong research orientation. The department is involved with several research institutes, including the Center for Innovation Research that it recently co-founded. Innovation research is therefore one of the group's priorities.

The Department is involved in three bachelor programs, three MSc programs, an MPhil program and a PhD-program. All programs except one of the bachelor programs are taught in English. Non-Dutch-speaking candidates will be asked to teach in English only. The standard working language of the Department is English.

Further information about the Department is available at http://www.tilburguniversity.nl/faculties/feb/organisation/dept/os/

We aim to maximize the research time available to active faculty, and working conditions are otherwise comparable to major research universities in the United States and Europe. The standard teaching load is equivalent to two courses plus guidance of five master thesis projects. Compensation is competitive with comparable schools, and there is ample support for conferences and other research related expenses.

Tilburg University is one of Europe's leading universities in the fields of economics and business administration. Tilburg is a pleasant city located in the Southern Netherlands, in the middle of one of Europe's largest high-tech regions and equidistant to Amsterdam (Netherlands), Brussels (Belgium) and the Düsseldorf/Cologne area (Germany).

The application deadline is October 15, 2008. Applicants should submit (1) a letter with their research and teaching statement, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) examples of research, and (4) evidence of teaching ability. In addition they should ask three referees to send a letter of reference. Applications and letters of reference should be sent to n.g.boelhouwer@uvt.nl. Applications after the deadline will be considered if the positions are not filled. Applicants are expected to have completed their doctoral thesis prior to taking up employment. Any further questions relating to the positions can be directed to Sytse Douma, the Head of the Department, at s.w.douma@uvt.nl.

    Research Discussions:

Quoting PC Palmer <pc_palmer@cox.net:  Hello -

I am a doctoral student in desperate need of more participants to complete a  10-minute survey on training and training evaluation issues. It was suggested to me that I try asking several of the Academy of Management  listservs to post my training survey participant request (see below for the  survey email/link) to their message boards. Would you please consider this?

In terms of survey participants, I am looking for full-time professionals/working adults from a variety of organizations. In particular, I am looking for executive-level participants (director-level and above) but need participants who are managers or individual contributors as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or if you need additional information.

Thank you in advance for your consideration,

     Penny Palmer

     Hello -

You are invited to participate in an online survey of training-related  decisions, expectations, and evaluation data preferences. Under the guidance  of Dr. Kurt Kraiger, Penny Palmer, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of  Tulsa, is executing this research in order to collect data for her
     dissertation project.

This survey is being conducted to understand more about how individuals in a  variety of organizations feel about training and training evaluation. It only takes about 10 minutes to complete the survey!

The online survey includes questions about the types of training investment decisions you make, the outcomes you expect to result from training, and the training evaluation criteria you would most likely use to make training-related decisions. In addition, you are asked to complete some
job/demographic information so that group differences can be examined. No
individual-level data will be released about any survey responses.

In return for your participation, you may request a copy of the survey results. This report will provide information on the types of  training-related investments, outcome expectations, and evaluation data preferences of a variety of training stakeholders (e.g., executives,  managers, individual contributors). Knowing more about the various  perspectives, interests, and needs of training's stakeholders can be useful  in many ways. For example, providing organizational members with the type of  training-related information that is found to be compelling can, in turn,  facilitate more effective decision-making.

This survey is very important - I hope you will agree to participate!
