    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apologies for ... cross-postings, but I thought you might be interested in the following announcement:

We are proud to be hosting the first 1st International e-Conference on Fit. It will take place online (the environmentally-friendly way of getting colleagues together) on the 20th-22nd November 2007. It is completely free.

The e-conference will cover all forms of 'fit' (e.g. person–organization fit, person-job fit, person–vocation fit) and we welcome submissions of all types (e.g. theoretical, conceptual, methodological, empirical, provocative essay, review).

You can find out more about the e-conference at: www.fitconference.com

Please sign-up, it commits you to nothing, but will give you reminders and information about the e-conference as it becomes available (such as news of the keynote speakers). It will also give us a guide to the numbers of people that might 'attend' the conference.

I hope to 'see' you in November.

    Network of Leadership Scholars

    PDW Schedule for <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place>

    <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Philadelphia</st1:place></st1:city>, August 4-5, 2007

    Sunday Sessions listed

Title:  Doing Well by Doing Good---the Role of Leadership across Disciplines and Domains Short Title:  Doing Well and Good through Leadership

As <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Philadelphia</st1:city></st1:place> is a place steeped in a rich history of leadership that seemed to have "anticipated the scholarship we do and the theme of this year's meetings, "  (Academy website), we believe our cross-disciplinary approach to leadership fits well within this year's meeting theme.  As our proposal will demonstrate, leadership provides a frame that spans every division of the Academy, and thus our PDW workshops serve to bring scholars together that otherwise would not be engaging in dialogue.

The content of our proposed sessions as well as the featured facilitators and speakers has been carefully designed to continuously reinforce the core message of the meeting and the Network of leadership scholars---that there are many frames for considering organizations and their effectiveness and that leadership is a vehicle for that enhanced, multifaceted consideration.

By engaging these multifaceted, broadened perspectives, scholarly leadership research can better assist organizations and our field in doing well by doing good.

Background: Leadership researchers and scholars may be found across many disciplines and interest groups.  The management discipline is particularly well-suited to bring together many disciplines to create a forum for better understanding of this increasingly important subject.  The purpose of this proposed PDW is to integrate leadership thought and action, with the intent of fostering dialogue throughout the participants. The PDW will bring together prominent scholars from a wide variety of fields to discuss leadership in the public domain, international leadership, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and self-concepts factors of leadership, paradigm diversity in defining and measuring leadership, and teaching leadership.

Additionally, we will examine where the field has been and avenues for the future through the eyes of Dr. Robert House, this year's eminent scholar.

From this discussion, we will identify research streams and agendas for pushing the current boundaries of leadership research, thereby advancing

    theory and practice.

About the PDW and Network of Leadership Scholars.

The PDW is proposed by the Network of Leadership Scholars, a new virtual organizing framework that was formalized by the Academy Board of Governors in April, 2005. This organizing structure provides a venue for building community across the Academy-- especially among members who may not have interacted previously - and for encouraging greater dialogue and interconnectivity. The Network of Leadership Scholars has been approved to work with the divisions to generate sponsorship for innovative interdisciplinary discussions across the Academy. The sessions we propose have been prepared by members of the Network and are designed in accordance with the mission of creating collaborations among divisions on the topic of leadership.

    General Information

In all of these sessions, audience members will be inspired and energized to examine leadership from an interdisciplinary and action-oriented perspective to consider how doing good can help organizations do well.  After participants share their very brief overviews of their own views and experiences, the sessions will be interactive and dialogue-based.  The goal will be to stimulate the production of new ideas, research agendas, and relationships among Academy members from a wide range of divisions.  After each session, ideas key areas of future research will be collected, and the discussions will continue on LDRNET.

    9:30-11:20 am     Sunday, August 5th, Convention Center, 104 A

Addressing public issues: Perspectives on Public Leadership A session on "Leadership in the Public Domain" will be of particular interest in a city like <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Philadelphia</st1:city></st1:place>, for it will bring scholars specializing in public leadership together to discuss the social and collective dimensions of leadership characterizing post-heroic leadership across the policy context, the community context, and the interorganizational collaboration arena.  Dr. Sonia Ospina and colleagues from the <st1:placename w:st="on">Research</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Center</st1:placetype> for Leadership in Action, <st1:placename w:st="on">New York</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> will present their work along with Dr. Barbara Crosby and Dr. John Bryson from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Minnesota</st1:placename></st1:place>.

Dr. Jerry Hunt and Dr. Kim Boal will offer their thoughts on the new light the work presented in this session brings to traditional leadership research.

10:00-12:00 am Sunday, August 5th  Conventional Center, Room 110 A&B

Eminent Senior Scholars: Expanding the Research Across Cultures

Eminent Scholar Perspective: An important component of this PDW is a session involving and celebrating a senior scholar from the leadership field, who will discuss historical and emerging issues in leadership research.  The "Eminent Senior Scholar" session will celebrate the work of Dr. Robert House (<st1:placename w:st="on">Wharton</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype>, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Pennsylvania</st1:placename></st1:place>) and provide attendees the opportunity to hear firsthand from Dr. House regarding his views about the growth of leadership research and its future across multiple domains and contexts.  Dr. Michael Mumford (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Oklahoma</st1:placename></st1:place>) will facilitate, giving members of the Academy a rare glimpse inside the mind and memory of this eminent scholar

This session will provide a "big picture" of the state of the leadership field and draw from multiple perspectives. Key issues in leadership that address public concern will be identified.

Network of Leadership Scholars Business Meeting Sunday, August 5, 5:00-6:00 pm.  Convention Center, Room 110 A&B All are encouraged to attend this business meeting----we'd love to have your input and thoughts on growing the Network of Leadership Scholars!

Theme:  Developing Organizational Landscapes for the 21st Century

As organizations navigate competitive landscapes they are faced with increasing competition at home and abroad. The international complexity for conducting business in the 21st century can't be overstated. Advances in technology and changes in the global political climate impact on the management of firms such that the norms for conducting business are often seen as increasingly ambiguous, and thus plotting a course for success in the 21st century is increasingly difficult. Therefore, a major challenge facing both academics and practitioners is to continually develop our understanding of the 21st century competitive landscape. As our understanding of this landscape evolves so will our ability to navigate it successfully.

    APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING

I am pleased announce that Lawrence Erlbaum Associates has published the book:

LEADERSHIP AT A DISTANCE:  RESEARCH IN TECHNOLOGICALLY-SUPPORTED WORK

Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2007, 264p., ISBN: 978-0-8058-5097-0 (PB)  http://www.psypress.com/9780805850970.  The book will also be available at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place>.

    Suzanne Weisband (Ed.)

This book offers insights from a noted group of scholars who discuss the complex phenomenon of leadership in distributed work settings - also known as leadership at a distance. Editor Suzanne Weisband addresses the ubiquitous roles leaders play, their scale of work, and the range of technologies available to them, while setting new directions in studying leadership at a distance. A unique perspective of empirical research unfolds, representing a variety of fields and methods to foster a better understanding of the role technology plays in leadership, and how leadership is shaped by the use of technology.

Leadership at a Distance begins with an overview of the challenges leaders face in the 21st century, followed by a discussion of: field studies and innovative ways of thinking about leadership in distributed work settings; experiments on the group dynamics and social processes involved in leading teams at a distance; and research on leadership in large-scale distributed collaborations, as well as lessons learned about leadership at a distance and future research directions.

The scholars who contributed to this book are located with disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs in psychology, organizational behavior, information systems, computer science, human-computer interaction, cognitive science, management, and other hybrid fields.  Many will consider the book of interest and appreciate its interdisciplinary scope.

Innovation and the State: Political Choice and Strategies for Growth in <st1:country-region w:st="on">Israel</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Taiwan</st1:country-region>, and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ireland</st1:place></st1:country-region>

    Review

    Robert E. Litan :

"In this important book, Dan Breznitz provides new insights into the very different strategies pursued by three very different countriesIsrael, Taiwan and Irelandthat each used to post remarkable post-War growth records. This is a must read for policy makers and citizens in all countries that are banking on high-tech to sustain and accelerate growth in their countries."Robert E. Litan, Vice President, Research and Policy, The Kauffman Foundation, and, Senior Fellow, Economic Studies, The Brookings Institution

    Book Description

The 1990s brought surprising industrial development in emerging economies around the globe: firms in countries not previously known for their high-technology industries moved to the forefront in new Information Technologies (IT) by using different business models and carving out unique positions in the global IT production networks. In this book Dan Breznitz asks why economies of different countries develop in different ways, and his answer relies on his exhaustive research into the comparative experiences of <st1:country-region w:st="on">Israel</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Taiwan</st1:country-region>, and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ireland</st1:place></st1:country-region> states that made different choices to nurture the growth of their IT industries.

The role of the state in economic development has changed, Breznitz oncludes, but it has by no means disappeared. He offers a new way of thinking about state-led rapid-innovation-based industrial development that takes into account the ways production and innovation are now conducted globally. And he offers specific guidelines to help states make advantageous decisions about research and development, relationships with foreign firms and investors, and other critical issues.

"Twenty-five years ago nobody predicted that Israeli, Taiwanese, and Irish firms would be at the forefront of IT globally.  Breznitz has undertaken a prodigious amount of research on the subject and presents some very interesting conclusions." Mauro Guillen, The <st1:placename w:st="on">Wharton</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype>, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Pennsylvania</st1:placename></st1:place>

    MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZATION DEPARTMENT

The Management & Organization (M&O) department at the Smith School of Business, The University of Maryland, consists of 24 core faculty, including tenure-track professors and Tyser Teaching Fellows. The group's interests and responsibilities cover the following areas:

organizational behavior, human resources, strategy, and entrepreneurship.

M&O faculty are proud of the department's very strong track record in research as well as teaching. A recent analysis of publications in the most prestigious strategy, <st1:place w:st="on">OB</st1:place>, and HR journals indicated that, on a worldwide basis, M&O ranked among the top 5 over the period 2001-2005.

Some other indicators of the strength and scholarly reputation of M&O faculty include: (a) five Fellows, including Dean of Fellows, of the Academy of Management; (b) two Past Presidents of the Academy of Management; (c) several past members of the 11-member board of governors of the Academy of Management; (d) six University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teachers; (e) multiple editorships and editorial board memberships on highly prestigious academic journals; and (f) multiple best paper awards from prestigious journals and academies.

M&O also has a vibrant PhD program which is getting stronger each year. Some of the schools where PhD graduates from the M&O department are currently serving as faculty include: <st1:city w:st="on">Dartmouth</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">Connecticut</st1:state>, <st1:city w:st="on">Cornell</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">Iowa</st1:state>, Virginia, <st1:city w:st="on">Wisconsin-Madison</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">UT</st1:state>-Austin, <st1:placename w:st="on">Minnesota-Twin</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Cities</st1:placetype>, Vanderbilt, Instituo di Empressa (<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Spain</st1:place></st1:country-region>), and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

M&O faculty also believe in excellence in teaching. Over the last several years, as a department, M&O faculty have earned the highest average teaching ratings across all departments every single semester.

It is our belief that, aside from having a group of excellent faculty, part of the explanation for why M&O excels at both research and teaching has to do with a culture of collaboration where colleagues are expected to foster intellectual synergy. It is our hope that we will be able to continue this cultural strength as we become a larger group.

The <st1:placename w:st="on">Smith</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype> has leading edge MBA and undergraduate programs, a rapidly expanding portfolio of executive education programs including EMBA programs in both the <st1:country-region w:st="on">US</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">China</st1:place></st1:country-region>, as well as a strong doctoral program. In the most recent surveys, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Smith Undergraduate Program as #18, while Financial Times and BusinessWeek ranked the Smith MBA Program as #17 and #25, respectively, in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region>

Given the Smith School's location in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area, faculty and staff at Smith enjoy not only a strong institutional environment but also the pleasures of living in a vibrant and leading global city which is very cosmopolitan, rich in world-class museums and the performing arts, architecturally delightful, full of greenery with the beautiful Potomac River flowing right through the city, within one to two hours of driving distance from not only beaches but also ski slopes, and home to some of the country's best public and private schools. Research Discussions:

    The Questions We Ask

<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Anaheim</st1:placename></st1:place> 2008's theme, The Questions We Ask, identifies the quest for an 'engaged-academy and 'evidence-based-management' (EBM)  that seek to add clarity to management research and position alignment with practitioners' questions.  The following excerpt from the 2007 Academy meeting's ancillary material introduces research discussions 2008 participants wish to consider beginning with recognition of, "Our world is awash with research ideas and empirical results. ... Our insights build year upon year. ... We yearn to apply the knowledge we discover. ... At the same time,  it [EBM, engagement] reveals some uneasiness about why our knowledge had not found its way into practice" (Walsh, p. 79).

Walsh and the 2008 theme development team suggest where to begin research discussions as:

    • Identifying the questions that define the theoretical and empirical frontiers of our sub-specialties.
    • What puzzles, conundrums, points of confusion, and unanswered questions really bedevil you and your close colleagues?
    • Reconnoiter your field of expertise and articulate the unanswered questions. Be sure to consider the most meaningful questions. ...
    • Honor our quest for relevance ... navigate the theory-practice frontier ... turn to the world of practitioners and take stock of their questions.  ...
    • Clear sense of theory-driven and practice-driven questions, ... sessions where theorists and practitioners sit side-by-side and reflect upon their joint and separate puzzles and how they intend to address them. ...
    • How do our modes of inquiry sit with the demands of organizing and managing? ... Can we even teach practical wisdom? ... How can we best translate the knowledge we build into phronesis [Aristotle's three different kinds of knowledge used]?
    • What are the politics of knowing? Are any questions "off-limits' in our world? What are these taboo questions? Do we ever self-censor? If so, why? What forces shape the kinds of questions we ask ... ?
    • Risk being introspective about how we each go about building knowledge. How do we learn from our research? How does one investigation most productively set the stage for the next? How do we learn from Practice, from the successful and unsuccessful deployment of our ideas? And how do we learn from others? ...
    • Confront the unkown. For professors among us, how do we teach when what we don't know may overwhelm what we do? How do we teah when our students demand evidence-based solutions to organizational problems, and we have none to offer?
    • And for the practitioners among us, how do we make decisions in a world filled with more questions than answers? How does the act of questioning itself change our habits of mind an dour behavioral repertoires?
    • Finally, what in the world of organization and management is unknowable? Is there a limit to reason in understanding human behavior in organizations? We critique rationality ... what is place of faith in our work?

The article posed such excellent research questions that the above rather long quote will hopefully jump-start our research discussions. For those interested in better understanding Evidence Based Management, please contact the TIM EBM representative, Miguel Olivas, or Darlene Alexander-Houle, practitioner, as they are working with Denise Rousseau's EBM team.
