    Call for Submissions:

    Dear TIM members,

    I hope you are doing well, back to the regular academic year after a busy AOM Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Our division had again a very strong year, and we anticipate further growth in the future. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to make TIM one of the largest divisions in the AOM!

    Although our last meeting just took place, I would encourage you to start thinking about PDWs (Professional Development Workshops) for our 2008 meeting in Anaheim, California. Submissions to PDWs run on an earlier schedule than the regular program, and we want to make sure everybody is well aware of this.

    TIM PDWs have been very successful in the past, so please consider submitting a proposal for 2008. PDWs offer more flexibility in terms of form and content than regular meetings, and so they are specially tailored for topics that are innovative and cutting-edge (yes, like yours!).

    The deadline for PDW online submissions is November 15th - please mark this date in your calendar! You will be receiving a formal call for PDW proposals from the AOM Office, but I am copying ours below so that you have it as early as possible.

    I look forward to receiving your PDW submissions. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

    Best regards,

    Fernando

    2008 TIM Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

    The TIM Division seeks innovative proposals for its pre-conference Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) at the Academy of Management's annual meeting at Anaheim (August 2008). The conference theme, "The Questions We Ask", is highly relevant to the fast-changing nature of technology and well suited to the diverse expertise and interests of the TIM Division members. We hope that the TIM PDW sessions will explore the many dimensions of this theme.

    PDW sessions are attractive venues for those hoping to explore cutting edge issues since they have longer time-frames than other Academy sessions, have flexible formats, and tend to enhance interaction among participants. The PDW sessions are usually held between Friday afternoon and Sunday noon immediately preceding the Academy meetings.

    You are encouraged to send in proposals related to the conference theme or to new trends in research and practice of Technology and Innovation Management. Proposals will be selected based on (a) relevance to the interests of the Division's membership; (b) creativity; (c) potential to foster integration with the rest of the AOM (we welcome proposals that are co-sponsored by the other Divisions and Interest Groups).

    We encourage you to submit a proposal by using the PDW form available at the Anaheim meeting website (http://submissions.aomonline.org/2008) under 'Forms and Documents'. Please send your proposals to Fernando Suarez at suarezf@bu.edu by November 15, 2007. If you have any questions, please contact Fernando.

    Second Global Sourcing Workshop:

    Social, Managerial and Knowledge Aspects in Global IT Sourcing
    10-13 March 2008
    Val D'Isere, France

    Following the success of the first Global Sourcing Workshop in March 2007, we are pleased to release this Call for Papers for the second Global Sourcing Workshop which will be held March 10-13, 2008 in Val D'Isere, France. Best papers from the workshop will be published in IT&P Special Issue on Global Sourcing.

    Global sourcing of IT and business services has received increasing attention since 2000. Many organizations in developed economies have rapidly evolved global models involving a mix of third parties at a range of geographical locations. Meanwhile developing economies have looked to develop their own industries to stimulate and meet demand. Both domestic and offshore suppliers are increasingly intent on designing more sophisticated sourcing arrangements, including offshore, nearshore and onshore components. The offshore market alone is expanding at well over 10 per cent per annum, while IT outsourcing (US$ 200 billion in 2005) and Business Process outsourcing (US$140 billion in 2005) are set to expand at between 7-10% annually for the next five years (Willcocks and Lacity, 2006 figures). These phenomena well deserve in-depth study, and this workshop provides a forum for advancement in research approaches and learning.

    In this Workshop will focus on the topic of Global Sourcing with a specific interest in social, managerial and knowledge-related aspects.

    We invite research papers that investigate social, managerial and knowledge-related topics in global outsourcing/offshoring relationships. Some themes that are of particular interest in this special issue are:

    * Social capital in global sourcing arrangements
    * People retention issues and implications for success of global IT sourcing arrangements
    * Identity in outsourcing relationships
    * Knowledge management systems and their impact on outsourcing performance
    * (Multi-) cultural aspects in outsourcing/offshoring relationships
    * Emerging concepts such as Open Outsourcing and their consideration from social, managerial and knowledge perspectives
    * Retained management capabilities from a social and knowledge perspective
    * State-of-the art in global sourcing of IT-related services
    * From IT-related services to service verticals and BPO
    * Intellectual property issues in global sourcing arrangements.
    We are interested to include papers that are both conceptual and empirically-based representing both vendor and client experiences. In terms of empirical data, we seek papers that report on outsourcing/offshoring arrangements from countries that have so far been poorly represented in the existing literature such as Latin American, Eastern Europe, Caribbean countries, China and others. In terms of conceptual papers and theoretical frameworks, we seek to contribute to theory building by both reapplying existing frameworks and developing new constructs that help explaining social, managerial and knowledge-related aspects in global sourcing.

    Accepted papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of IT & People and possibly in a book. The selection and the evaluation of papers will be carried out through the Global Sourcing Workshop (www.globalsourcing.org.uk). Selected papers from the workshop will go under two review cycles to determine their suitability to be published in this IT&P special issue.

    Please note that a small conference venue has been reserved and numbers will be limited to around 40 people with guaranteed attendance restricted to those having papers accepted for presentation.

    Important Dates:

    September 7th 2007 - Deadline to submit extended abstracts to the Workshop on Global Sourcing
    September 18th 2007 - Notification of accepted extended abstracts
    December 10th 2007 - Deadline to submit full papers to the Workshop on Global Sourcing
    January 15th 2008 - Deadline to send reviews to authors of accepted papers to the Workshop
    February 14th 2008 - Deadline to submit revised manuscripts to the Workshop on Global Sourcing Workshop
    March 10-13th 2008 - Workshop on Global Sourcing, Val D'Isere, France
    March 30th 2008 - Deadline to invite selected papers from the Workshop to the Special Issue in IT & P
    May 30th 2008 - Deadline to resubmit revised manuscripts to SI in IT&P.
    July 15th 2008 - Deadline to send 2nd review report to authors
    August 30th 2008 - Deadline to resubmit revised manuscript after which editor decision letters will be sent to the authors.

    Abstracts should be between 600-800 words.

    All submissions should be sent in MS Word format to: Debra.Farrell@templeton.ox.ac.uk with 'Global Sourcing Workshop 2008' as the subject of the e-mail.

    For guidelines on preparation of full papers please follow the IT & People Instructions for Authors (http://www.emeraldinsight.com/info/journals/itp/notes.jsp).

    CALL FOR PAPERS
    Information Technology in Transition Economies A Special Issue of the Journal of Global Information Technology Management (JGITM)

    Tentative Publication Date: July 2008

    Additional details on this special issue may be found on:

    Special Issue Description

    The collapse of the Soviet Union resulted in many formerly centrally planned and highly controlled economies to experience radical reforms that fully changed the business landscape. Over the last two decades, these transition economies have increasingly opened up to the outside world and allowed market forces to drive businesses operations.

    Many of these dramatic changes in the economic structure of transition economies were facilitated by information technology (IT). With the political and economic changes happening, many companies in transition economies not only experienced major organizational restructuring, but also acquired increased access to modern computer technology. Frequently, investments in IT are conducted in the hope of gaining or protecting competitive advantage in the less regulated and less protected global markets.

    However, though these economies are in transition to free market economies, they have not yet fully reached the level of maturity and stability characteristic of economies in developed countries. Frequently, because of the high speed of changes, neither the workforce nor the business management and political structures have been able to sufficiently adjust to free market concepts. It is therefore to expect that IT system implementation and use in vibrant transition economies substantially differ from similar projects in established developed countries. In spite of these specific conditions prevalent in transition economies, the main stream of research in the field of IT remains focused on issues relevant primarily to a narrow group of highly developed countries.

    The objective of this special issue is to fill this gap by providing a forum for both academic researchers and practitioners interested in issues related particularly to the implementation and performance of information systems and the application of information technology in transition economies. Possible contributions may include, but are not limited to the following:

    IT strategy in transition economies
    Economics of IT in transition economies
    Cost/benefit analysis
    IT productivity studies at the country, industry or firm level Comparative cross-country research Country specific case studies Risk analysis Global supply chain management and its effect on transition economies IT off-shoring / IT outsourcing into transition economies IT back-sourcing from transition economies International IT project management Human factors and their effect on IT system design and use in transition economies Digital divide in context of transition economies E-commerce and its effect on transition economies E-government in transition economies IT education in transition economies Legal and fiscal policies regarding IT investments

    All papers should clearly state how they contribute to the understanding of IS/IT in transition economies. How are the findings different from what one would expect in fully developed market economies? How may transition economies benefit from these studies?

    CALL FOR PAPERS
    The Second European Academic Workshop on E-Human Resource Management:
    "e-HRM: barrier or trigger for HRM transformation?"
    May 29 - 30, 2008 Aix en Provence (Carry le Rouet), France
    http://www.e-hrmresearch.org
    This is the Second European Academic Workshop that invites scientists from both Information Technology and HRM fields to discuss research into e-HRM! We believe that such a combination will help to understand the phenomenon of electronic Human Resource Management. Organizations broadly implement IT to change-improve-transform the HRM function. Across different studies, research on various aspects of e-HRM has produced contradictory findings: some HR activities led to benefits through adopting e-HRM (cost savings, efficiency, flexible services, employees participation), whereas, others created extra organizational barriers (work stress, more HR administration, and disappointments with technological properties).
    Discovering this empirical disparity geared us to the next topic we now propose to the e-HRM community: "e-HRM: barrier or trigger for HRM transformation?"

    We invite the submission of papers, full research and research-in progress, to the up-coming Workshop that will focus on on the impact of the integration of HRM and IT on the transformation of the HRM function.
    Key dates
    Full paper submission: December 28, 2007
    Author notification: February 11, 2008
    Final submission due: April 4, 2008

    Examples of the topics of interest are:
    - E-HRM and transformation of the HRM function: theoretical perspectives
    - The role of IT in HRM function transformation
    - Electronic HRM and changes of HR roles
    - Devolution of the HR function to the line managers with e-HRM
    - Re-engineering of HR architecture with electronic HRM
    - New HRM competences related to Electronic HRM
    - Employees involvement in e-HRM
    - Contingency factors for the IT-based HRM transformation
    - Organizational, cultural, individual conditions for the e-HRM and HRM transformation
    - E-transformation of HRM in different types of organisations (sectors, industries, profit, non-profit, etc.)
    - Globalisation and IT-based HRM transformation
    - Country differences/cross-border comparisons of IT-based HRM transformation
    - Implementation of Electronic HRM
    - HRM database security and integrity
    - Data protection and privacy in e-HRM
    - Assessment and evaluation of IT-based HRM user interface
    - Requirements elicitation and validation for HRM information systems
    - Company performance and e-transformation of HRM

    CFP: Conference on University Quality Development - Lithuania

    This ... [the below] is a conference that I attended the last time it was in Lithuania and found it immensely useful. It is held in two Lithuanian cities (you are bused from Vilnius to Kaunas).

    The 5th Annual International Conference on University Quality Development (UNIQUAL) "Changing University Culture: Issues of Quality"
    11-12 October 2007
    Vilnius - Kaunas, Lithuania

    Co-organised by:
    Institute of Educational Studies, Kaunas University of Technology
    Programme for Teacher Education, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
    Research Center of Higher Education Development, Xiamen University

    Call for Papers
    http://fou.plu.ntnu.no/uniqual/

    As higher education is increasingly more diversified, the contemporary university culture is influenced not only by its fundamental values which interact with different factors of turbulent life, but also the existing culture of the higher education system. Therefore, the conference will seek answering the questions: What is the meaning of university culture? What are the values of contemporary higher education in the changing society? Are they influenced by country-specific context? Do these values provide a background for a sustainable development of the society? What is the relationship between the cultures of higher education institutions of different types? What is the role of university values in the overall culture of higher education?
    Another important aim is to consider is the culture of university organisation: What values of higher education are encoded in this managerial concept? Who are the members of academic community and what is their culture? What are the tendencies of change in the culture of university organisation and academic community? For instance, what are the tendencies of change in the culture of different university departments in accordance with interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches? How university culture is influenced by students who are often most energetic but provisional members and at the same time clients of the institution? How scholarly culture is manifested in different cultural contexts?

    The UNIQUAL 5 will also aim to discuss the relationship between the culture of teaching and culture of learning, the culture of communication and cooperation between teachers and students: what are the changes and tensions in this area? What are the reasons for these problems?

    Papers focusing on the following or related issues areas are welcome:
    values of contemporary higher education in the changing society;
    meaning and quality of university culture;
    culture of academic discipline;
    relationship between the cultures of higher education institutions of different types;
    role of university values in the overall culture of higher education;
    members of academic community and their culture;
    students' influence on the culture of university organization;
    scholarly culture as a global phenomenon; the changes and tensions in this area and the reasons for problems.
    Important dates:
    (1) Abstract submission by 1 September 2007 at ei@ktu.lt.
    (2) Paper submission and registration by 15 September 2007.
    Selected papers will be published after the conference.

    Requirements for abstracts:
    Your abstract should be of approximately 300 words and specify the research problem, objective of the paper, research methodology conclusions and keywords. Abstracts will be reviewed.

    About the conference: general issues
    The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Xiamen University (China) and Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania) have formed a so called "academic triangle" which holds annual conferences on higher education quality not only for researchers in higher education, but also for those in other fields who relate their activity to higher education: higher education policymakers, managers, representatives of culture, business and industry. The founding institutions take turns in hosting the UNIQUAL conferences. In 2004 the conference was held in Lithuania, in 2005 - in Norway, in 2006 - in China. In 2007, Lithuania will host the UNIQUAL 5.
    This conference may be characterised by several specific features, including:
    1. even though it is devoted to higher education quality, different issues of quality are at focus each year. For instance, the focus of UNIQUAL 4 held at Xiamen University in 2006 was staff development as key assurance measure for university quality.
    2. The issues discussed at the conference are related to different contexts: country- specific and global. The country hosting the conference also seeks to attract the attention of conference participants to the country-specific context and relate the issues discussed at the conference to it in the hope that the conference becomes standing in terms of maintaining fruitful relationships among researchers which are developed at the conference. For this reasons, the hosting institution seeks to introduce the cultural gems and historical attractions of the country to the conference participants as well as provide them with an environment for communicating with local researchers.

    CALL FOR PAPERS -

    Special Issue on: The Impact of Strategic Performance Management on Team Management and Performance http://www.emeraldinsight.com/info/journals/tpm/tpm_strategic.jsp

    Team Performance Management will publish a Special Issue in June 2008 on 'The Impact of Strategic Performance Management on Team Management and Performance'. It will be guest edited by Dr Vinh Sum Chau of the Norwich Business School, University of East Anglia (UK).

    In reviewing the behaviour of senior managers 30 years on from The Nature of Managerial Work (1973), Mintzberg (Management as life's essence, 2004) argues "many senior managers are removed from the ongoing daily activities of their organization ... [so] we get grand and gloriously simple-minded strategies ... so removed from day-to-day life [and] we have more and more disconnect between senior management and the rest of the organization" (pp.206-208). The literature is very much awash with research on how subordinate management can be involved with strategic decisions rather than the other way round. There is therefore the danger that programmes championed by CEOs are held back from adverse and critical feedback, and any disconnection is only widened.

    The Special Issue invites papers on the relationship between the implementation of systems of strategic performance management and specific team management activity and performance.

    Conceptual papers, empirical papers, and case studies are welcomed on, but not restricted to, the following themes, related to team management and performance:

    * Performance measurement and performance management frameworks in practice;
    * Strategy implementation, execution, and policy deployment;
    * Organizational learning;
    * Total quality management and business excellence frameworks;
    * Strategic reviews and managerial auditing; and
    * Activity-based management and micro-management practices.

    Submission Requirements

    Manuscripts should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words in length, should include a structured abstract and should be set out in the format requested in the journal's Author Guidelines (see http://www.emeraldinsight.com/info/journals/tpm/notes.jsp ).
    Submissions should be innovative papers not currently being considered for publication elsewhere.

    All papers will be double-blind refereed through a peer review process.

    Full paper submissions are requested by email attachment directly to Dr.
    Chau at v.chau@uea.ac.uk .
    The deadline for full paper submissions is 12 November 2007.
