Presentations from Academy Patent Data PDW 2007
The presentations from the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Patent Data PDW</st1:placename></st1:place> (Philadelphia 2007) are available online. A number of participants at the workshop requested these presentations, and several others who couldn't get into the room expressed an interest in them as well (sadly, even with presenters sitting on the floor we were out of space). This year at the workshop the presenters drew on cutting edge research to contrast the use of patent data to measure knowledge versus (patent-based) appropriability strategies. The presentations are posted at the following website:
http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/faculty/dsomaya/patentPDW/
Currently Scott Stern's (discussant) slides are not available on the site. Please check back later.
We thank the presenters and Scott for their support, and all participants for their interest.

Dear Colleagues.
NSF has just released the solicitation for our final Human and Social Dynamics Competition. Once again, these proposals must be significantly interdisciplinary (3 co-PIs from at least 2 different disciplines). The three areas of emphasis remain unchanged. This year, exploratory proposals are not invited. The two budget categories are $750,000 maximum (where most proposals will fall) and $1.25 million maximum (for particularly expensive interdisciplinary projects). The deadlines are 19 and 22 Feb (depending on budget request).
The solicitation is posted at:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08508/nsf08508.pdf
Although this is the last year for this competition, please do not discount the opportunity. NSF expects to fund $30 million in HSD project in '08 competition. For those of you working on significantly interdisciplinary and potentially transformative topics, this is still a wonderful opportunity.
Best regards.

Books
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am finishing up a book, "reboot! rethinking and restarting software
development." If all goes well it will be published by Cambridge
<st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> Press.
The book is a call for more rigor and discipline in the field of software development. While the book could be a supplemental reading for a course in MIS or Information Technology, it is a trade book.
The target audience are practitioners in the field of software development and those (the core business) that interface with software development. It is my hope to build a bridge between academia and practice.
I would like to get some feedback, formal or informal, from members of TIM and AOM.
If you are interested, then please let me know. I will send you an outline of the book, an annotated table of contents and some sample
chapters.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR A SPECIAL ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY
TRANSFER ON "RESEARCH CENTERS AND SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION"
The past thirty five years have seen the proliferation of "research
centers" designed to pursue scientific and technical questions presumably
not directly or adequately addressed by extant research organizations, such
as university departments and private firms. A significant proportion of
these centers is university based, though many reside in the non-profit and
government sectors. Diverse in organization and mission, research centers
usually span boundaries separating disciplines and sectors to foster
collaborative networks that bring together several fields of science and
technology, sometimes even to create new fields.
While research centers have been the focus of a moderate amount of study
and evaluation in recent years, there remain significant gaps in knowledge
regarding how these institutions organize and operate to produce both
intended and unintended outputs and impacts. To improve understanding, we
are calling for contributions to a special issue of The Journal of
Technology Transfer that will assess the current state of the literature on
various types of centers both within the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> and internationally and
identify the important questions that remain unanswered or unasked.
Consistent with JTT policy, we welcome alternative modes ranging from
empirical analyses, to theoretical models to specific case studies.
Although we are willing to consider all relevant papers, discussion will
emphasize the following issues:
(a) Distinguishing research centers from other research organizations.
Which attributes do all centers share; which attributes do all centers
exclude? What characteristics, if any, distinguish research centers from
other research organizations, like government and university laboratories?
(b) Measuring institutional heterogeneity across research centers. How do
centers vary in terms of size, resources, and participant "composition"
(e.g., per field, per sector)? How does organization and management differ
across centers? How do center operations and processes vary? How do
research centers change with time? How do these characteristics vary across
national boundaries?
(c) Predicting and explaining the intended and unintended consequences of
research centers. How do centers affect scientific productivity? What do
centers and center scientists "produce" that other research organizations
do not? What of scientific quality and academic freedom? How do centers
affect traditional academic roles? How do structural, organizational and
other factors affect various outcomes?
(d) Evaluating centers as policy tools. Do centers really work? What
metrics and methodologies are the most appropriate for evaluating centers?
What are the "additional" effects of centers? How do policies toward
centers at the national or sub-national level (e.g., state) differ and to
what end? Is the centers approach the most efficient means with which to
effect scientific and technical outcomes and outputs?
Abstracts (maximum 1200 words) should be submitted to Craig Boardman
(pboardma@ida.org) or Denis Gray (denis_gray@ncsu.edu). The deadline for
submission of abstracts is January 15, 2008. Following vetting of the
abstracts (by January 31, 2007), submission of full papers will be due by
April 15, 2008.

The Bocconi PhD program in Business Administration and Management has
undertaken a progressive path to becoming a leading program worldwide. To
this end, Bocconi encourages qualified applications from international
students. It values their presence in the program as an important
contribution to its diversity and intellectual richness.
Established in <st1:city w:st="on">Milan</st1:city> (<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Italy</st1:place></st1:country-region>) in 1902, Bocconi is a research university of
international standing in business, economics, and law. Our PhD program in
Business Administration and Management – entirely taught in English –
provides a solid methodological basis, exposure to forefront themes and
methods, and the ability to design and implement research projects in
business disciplines. This is achieved through a balanced mix of courses,
advanced seminars, field projects, interactions with international
scholars, and a carefully tutored dissertation project. The PhD faculty is
composed of research oriented and active young scholars, with international
scientific standing.
While the program is designed to specialize students in one field of
business administration and management (currently, seven fields of
specialization are activated: Strategy, Marketing, Organization, Technology
and Innovation, Accounting, Public Management, and Business History), it
provides students with the interdisciplinary knowledge that is welcome in
the administrative and managerial sciences.
If admitted to the program, students will be competitively granted a
fellowship and the tuition fee will be waived.
Admission to the PhD Program in Business Administration and Management will be carried out in two rounds. The deadline for the first round is the end
on January, while the deadline for the second round is the end of April.
The second round will assign the places and fellowships not assigned during
the first round.
