General Announcements:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Technology & Innovation Management Division (TIM) of the Academy of Management needs your help. We are anticipating a record number of paper and symposium submissions to the 2008 conference in Anaheim, and want to ensure that everyone gets a full set of thoughtful reviews.

The good news is that as of today, just over 430 of you have already volunteered. Thanks! The rest of the news is that we need AT LEAST another 250 reviewers if every submission is to be read by three qualified reviewers.

As you probably know the Academy requires reviewers to sign-up every year. So if you were a reviewer last year, but haven't yet signed up, please do so now. And if you didn't review for the division in previous years, please consider doing so this year.

As you may or may not be aware, the Academy of Management has restricted the number of divisions a reviewer can sign-up for to three. The number of papers a person can review for each division is also limited to three. So, we're asking you to include TIM in your reviewer set. We've experienced a surge in membership over the past few years, and to take advantage of that growth in numbers, we'll need all hands on deck to ensure that we can provide high quality feedback!

To sign up, please visit http://review.aomonline.org, and select TIM as one of your reviewer divisions for 2008. The sign-up process is relatively easy and fast. In mid January 2008 you'll be asked to review between one and three submissions over the following several weeks.

Thanks for considering this request, and for contributing to the development of our dynamic division.

Please also make your submissions to the TIM Division. We anticipate strong attendance in Anaheim and we'd like to showcase the exceptional research of our Division members.

Shawn M. Carraher, TIM Division Program Chair

    'Management of Meaning in Organizations'
(international conference organized by International Association of Cross-Cultural

Competence & Management, in partnership with Rotterdam School of Management RSM/EUR and Poznan University College of Business and Foreign Languages PWSBiJO)

    Poznan, June 25-26, 2008

    and 3 x IN = Inventing + Innovating + Interpreting

(international conference organized by the Poznan University College of Business and Foreign Languages (PWSBiJO) in partnership with the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM/EUR) with additional sponsorship provided by the Fund for Citizen's Education (Fundacja na Rzecz Edukacji Obywatelskiej) and the Management and Business Institute (Instytut Zarządzania i Biznesu)

    Poznan, June 27, 2008

    Accompanied by

"Malta 2008", the annual Poznan International Theatre Festival (June 23-28, 2008)

The Management of Meaning in Organizations:

Contemporary flows of immigrants, tourists and professional expats contribute to the emergence of multiculturally patterned interaction chains and to the emergence of a multilayered and negotiable concept of culture as a resource and playground rather than a ready-made software to be installed in individual minds during partially enforced socialization. Some of these patterned interactions will evolve into rituals and institutions, but not all of them, and most will require a continuous investment in maintenance and reengineering of relations and interaction processes.

Most of the professionals expedited by their companies and agencies to far away places are forced to dive into a cultural shock and re-adjustment. They develop their own cultural competence. In order to understand what they are doing and how they cope, we have to start with the study of re-tooling of cultures and subcultures (including the so called national ones managed by state bureaucracies, including ours) and of the consequences of individualization and hybridization of the ongoing process of identity formation, reformation and counterreformation. Studying the revolutionary consequences of reshaping of national cultures under the pressure of accelerated globalization and increase of unmanageable inequalities are at the core of our scientific programme.

    3 x IN (Inventing – Innovating – Intrepreting)

Breeding, facilitating and sustaining entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial initiatives requires approaching management as if it was a gerund rather than a noun. Innovating means seeing realities as flows and processes, streams and currents rather than bricks or blocks of organizational structures neatly displayed in solid organi-grams. Non-hierarchic, network-oriented and self-managed-teams-based matrixes of future forms of organizing call for research attention of academic and non-academic communities of practice. Dealing with manageable inequalities, minding and mining diversities or breaking with bureaucratic routines without getting rid of traceable responsibilities – those are the new skills and insights which call for inventions, innovations and continuous self-reflexive interpretations (and re-interpretations, and re-re-interpretations and more). 3 x IN focuses on breeding cross-cultural competence and on eVolving. Competent scanning of organizational windows of opportunities and practical adjustment of managerial narratives and academic discourses to changing realities of postglobalized, de-communized and post-Chindianized interactions are among challenges ahead. Let us start tackling them

A group of researchers spanning cross-cultural studies, critical management studies and sciences of organization invite you to discuss theoretical landscape of comparative studies in cultures and organizations. Selected papers submitted to both conferences will appear in European Journal of International Management, Journal of Organizational Change Management, Journal of Cross-Cultural Competence & Management and International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management. presented at the conference will be considered for a special issue in ET&P, edited by Israel Droi, Benson Honig, and Mike Wright, entitled 'Transnational Entrepreneurship and Global Reach' to be published Sept. 2009.

    Keynote Speaker: Ivan Light (UCLA)

    What Future for Globalization?

    Theme 1: Transnational Entrepreneurship

The concept of transnational entrepreneurship (TE) as a distinct attribute of globalization has drawn considerable attention in social science disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, economics, economic geography, and regional planning. Transnational entrepreneurs are
individuals that migrate from one country to another, concurrently maintaining business-related linkages with their countries of origin and currently adopted countries and communities. By traveling both physically and virtually, transnational entrepreneurs engage simultaneously in two or more socially embedded environments, allowing them to maintain critical global relations that enhance their ability to creatively and efficiently maximize their resource base. TE's promote international trade by taking advantage of globalization and the entrepreneurs' cosmopolitan way of life, enabling a more timely acquisition of resources required for operating cross-national businesses.

The growing impact of transnational entrepreneurship can be mainly attributed to the changing nature of international migration and diasporas, and to the complex nature of international business activities.Understanding how transnational entrepreneurs translate, innovate, and
modify structures, simultaneously operating in two distinctive cultural paradigms, remains a challenge for the field of entrepreneurship. We seek discussion regarding how transnational entrepreneurs balance the tensions between home and host country, and the demands related to social objectives over economic ones. Thus, both agency and practice appear to be particularly important when examining the process of seeking and exploiting business opportunities within dual social structures. We welcome a variety of topics and perspectives.
General subjects of interests include (but are certainly not limited to) the following:

    A. Conceptual and definitional issues

     * Demarcation of the empirical scope and analytical boundaries of transnational entrepreneurship (TE) research.
    * Addressing the epistemological challenges reflected in TE multiple relationships and different cultural and institutional environments.
    * Integrating micro-meso and macro- levels of analysis in TE research.
    * Reviewing analytical frameworks (e.g practice, institutional, ecological , network, social capital or resource base) which assist in understanding the dynamic nature of TE as it flows through the intersection of individual and collective meanings, perceptions, experiences and practices.

    B. Transnational entrepreneurship processes and dynamics

    * What are the different strategies of action that transnational entrepreneurs undertake?
    * In what ways might the varied institutional setting at either home or destination influence the prospects of success for transnational entrepreneurs, and why?
    * What are the cultural frames of reference, symbolic orders and schemas of meaning that transnational entrepreneurs consider when operating in dual settings?
    * What kinds of businesses opportunities are most amenable for transnational entrepreneurship, and what are the best ways of exploiting them?
    * Why do transnational entrepreneurs fail?
    * How does the legal and regulatory regime impact transnational entrepreneurs?
    * What is the role of social and industry networks for transnational entrepreneurship, and how and why are they formed and structured ?
    * What is the life-cycle of the transnational enterprise and how is it structured?
    * What are the political forces behind the ability to secure resources and to compete in dual environments?
    * How do transnational entrepreneurs generate legitimacy from their dual environments?
    * How do transnational entrepreneurs used social capital and knowledge for the purpose of setting and operating a business?

All abstracts must be received no later than 31st Jan 2008.

Abstracts for papers should be e-mailed to Benson Honig, Director of NeXt at
    bhonig@wlu.ca.

Conference drafts must be available by April 11th in order that they may be posted on the NeXt website, and by March 31 for full consideration in the special issue of ET&P.

EXPENSES: Expenses for travel (economy-excursion class round trip) and accommodation may be partially covered for speakers and discussants.

The Asia Academy of Management invites papers for its sixth conference on the captioned theme. A lot of attention has been paid to the rising position of Asia in the world economy in the past two decades. Most researchers and business practitioners believe that this rising trend will continue or even accelerate in the coming years. Asia is a collection of many countries with their unique social and cultural backgrounds and at different stages of political and economic development. It is clear that management phenomena and practices evolved from diversified countries can provide exciting and useful insights to the field of management studies and the development of management theories. The Sixth Asia Academy of Management conference is therefore devoted to provide a platform for scholars to share their research interests related to the new faces of Asian management. Taiwan is the right place to reflect on this issue as it has undergone rigorous changes in its political system and economic structure in the past twenty to thirty years. Specifically, issues related to the broad theme of the conference include, but are not restricted to the following:

l Is there any uniqueness in Asian management when compared to our existing management theories? How can this uniqueness be explained, and how can it help further develop our management theories?

l Are there any significant variations in the phenomenon of management and management practices among the many countries in Asia? How can these differences be explained by management and other theories?

l How can Asian management studies help business practitioners adapt and manage their businesses better in Asia?

l How well is Asia countries developing and adopting the latest technologies to build competitiveness?

l Does the Asian workforce differ from their counterparts in other regions? How do business practitioners adjust to these differences?

The conference program will consist of keynote speeches, symposium, competitive paper sessions, and interactive paper sessions. This year, the Western Academy of Management will host their international conference along with the AAoM conference with a focus on 'strategic alliances and network'. Please contact their Program Chair K. Praveen Parboteeah (parbotek@uww.edu) for details.
