    Call for Applications: 2010 AOM TIM Junior Faculty Consortium

     

    The Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management is pleased to invite applications for the 2010 TIM Junior Faculty Consortium to be held at the Academy of Management meeting in Montreal

    (Canada) on Friday, August 6th and Saturday, August 7th, 2010.

     

    If you hold an assistant professor rank (or its equivalent) and teach or research in the TIM domain, this professional development workshop is for you. The workshop will make available the knowledge that you need to prosper in both the local and global academic environment. The workshop focuses on strategies for impact as a scholar and teacher, as well as on building a career in diverse professional settings.

     

    This year's consortium will allow participants to learn how to publish in top journals, meet the editors of prestigious journals in the field, and receive feedback on their working papers from their peers and senior faculty. The consortium will feature outstanding senior faculty members with a proven record of research and teaching. The consortium will provide participants with the opportunity for reflection and renewal, for networking with friends and colleagues, and for meeting new peers and senior colleagues with shared interests. Applicants must have at least one full year of experience as an assistant professor in a post-Ph.D. academic institution and no more than three years experience by August 2010.

     

    To apply, please email your vita to Anu Wadhwa at anu.wadhwa@epfl.ch. When you apply please indicate the month and year you started your first assistant professor position. We will take applications on a rolling basis until May 15, 2010. We encourage you to apply early.

     

    Accepted applicants will be required to submit a working paper for the Paper Feedback Session by June 30, 2010.

    TIM Doctoral Consortium – Call for applications (deadline: JUNE 1, 2010)

     

    The Technology and Innovation Management Division is now accepting applications from Ph.D. students for its 2010 doctoral consortium to be held at the Academy of Management meeting in Montreal, August 6-11.  The consortium will be held on Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7.

     

    The TIM doctoral consortium is most valuable to Ph.D. candidates interested in conducting leading-edge research and teaching in technology management, innovation, and related areas.  The consortium will be led by a panel of faculty members with proven research and teaching records who will address key issues in academic life such as publishing in top journals, managing your time for research, meeting teaching and institutional demands, managing research collaborations, and funding your research.

     

    The coordinators of the 2010 consortium are Preeta Banerjee (Brandeis) and Andrea Prencipe (University G. d'Annunzio). The faculty facilitators include: Gino Cattani (NYU), Saikat Chaudhuri (Wharton), Raghu Garud (Penn State), Alan McCormack (MIT), Ammon Salter (Imperial College), and Sonali Shah (U. of Washington).

     

    The application deadline is Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Only electronic applications will be considered. To apply, please send a Curriculum Vita along with a one-page statement containing the following information: (1) Your full contact information, (2) your stage in the doctoral program, (3) the name of your thesis advisor and one additional reference, and, (4) A 100-word abstract or summary proposal of your dissertation. Preference will be given to doctoral candidates at later stages of their career – those at or near the thesis proposal stage.

    Announcement and Application Information 2010 Entrepreneurship Division Doctoral Consortium

     

    The Entrepreneurship Division will sponsor its annual consortium for doctoral students during the 2010 annual meetings of the Academy of Management in Montréal, Canada.  The Consortium brings together doctoral students and experienced faculty to discuss opportunities and challenges as scholars in the field.  This year, the program will include panels and discussions on dissertation strategies, first job and career path considerations, establishing research partnerships, and a host of other topics.  Students will also receive detailed and constructive feedback on their work from an accomplished scholar in the field. The Consortium will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010 and continue until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010.

     

    The Consortium is open to doctoral students who have completed approximately two years of their Ph.D. program.  The ideal candidate will have finished his/her coursework and be engaged in preparing a dissertation proposal.  To apply, please submit the following four separate documents electronically to both Sharon Alvarez (alvarez_42@fisher.osu.edu ) and Steven Michael (smichael@illinois.edu).

     

    (1) An electronic file/Word document in which you furnish...

    (a) Complete contact information (address, phone number, fax, and e-mail address),

    (b) A statement of whether you have attended other doctoral consortia and, if so, which consortia and when, and

    (c)   A statement saying that if you are admitted to the Consortium, you commit to attend ALL sessions (including dinner Friday night).

     

    (2) A recommendation letter from your dean, department chair, or major advisor that verifies your (a) status/progress and (b) year in your school's doctoral program.

     

    (3) A current resume/CV.

     

    (4) A "working paper."  This paper must be on an entrepreneurship topic and is best a paper that you are moving towards publication or a detailed overview of your intended dissertation research.  The paper must NOT (a) exceed 35 pages (all inclusive), (b) be an accepted-for-publication/published manuscript, or (c) be a defended dissertation proposal.  The working paper is a key requirement for admission.

     

    Applications must be received on or before June 11, 2010.  Review of the application materials will begin on June 11, 2010.   The consortium will be limited to 30 Ph.D. students, with slots allocated based on application materials.  Questions should be sent to the Consortium Co-chairs, Sharon Alvarez (alvarez_42@fisher.osu.edu ) and Steven Michael (smichael@illinois.edu).

    Research in management revolves around firms and markets, operating at a macro-meso level, but necessitates assumptions about the behavior of individuals. The assumptions of neoclassical economics may be ubiquitous but progress has been made in offering refinements grounded in behavioral and cognitive research. Challenges still lie ahead as we endeavor to develop realistic, parsimonious, and generalizable theories linking micro behavior to macro outcomes in organizations and markets.

     

    In Behavioral Strategy: Prominent Questions, Paper Development, a professional development workshop at the AoM Montréal meeting, distinguished panelists will comment on the state of the art and then join roundtable discussions aimed at furthering our work. We expect a diverse crowd, novices and experts, some prominent and some promising, from multiple disciplines (economics, psychology, sociology, organizational theory), utilizing a range of methods: experiments, simulations, archival data, fieldwork and more.

     

    ***Advance Your Own Work! Submit an Extended Abstract*** To have your work discussed at a roundtable and commented upon by our panelists, submit an extended abstract (500 words), including an overview of your research topic and questions, the method, the expected contributions or key findings (if available). Comment on the most important challenges you face in crafting your paper for journal submission. Include up to four key words. The Best Behavioral Strategy Work in Progress award will be bestowed on one lucky participant.

    A one-day Doctoral Student Workshop will be presented in conjunction with the 8th West Coast Research Symposium on Technology Entrepreneurship.  The workshop's sponsor is the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.  The Research Symposium is sponsored by The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (University of Washington), the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (Stanford University), the Lundquist Center for Entrepreneurship (University of Oregon) the Lloyd Greif Center of Entrepreneurial Studies (USC), and the Don Beall Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (UC Irvine).

    We invite doctoral students to submit applications to attend this workshop. Sessions will focus on technology entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on contemporary work in the field. Faculty presenters include Kathy Eisenhardt, Stanford Univ.; Suresh Kotha, Univ. of Washington; Alan Meyer, Univ. of Oregon; Nandini Rajagopalan, Univ. of Southern California; Kaye Schoonhoven, UC Irvine; and others.

    The workshop offers an intellectually stimulating experience, maps the theoretical domain of technology entrepreneurship, and builds community. Workshop participants will have opportunities to present their own research interests, to interact with each other, and to get acquainted with faculty members.
     
    In 2010, the doctoral student workshop will offer two separate tracks. Track 1 is designed for doctoral students who have not yet defended a dissertation proposal and who may still be in the process of selecting a dissertation topic. This track will devote attention to the selection of a dissertation topic, research design, and sources of data. Track 2 is intended for students who have defended dissertation proposals (or who are close to doing so). This track will devote attention to completing the dissertation, publishing the dissertation, and early career considerations. The two tracks will join together for selected workshop sessions/panels and for all meals.

    All students chosen for the workshop will be invited to attend the two-day Research Symposium that follows on August 27-28. The symposium will showcase cutting-edge work by technology entrepreneurship researchers from the West Coast and around the world.  Details on the research symposium are available at the WCRS website: <http://theWCRS.org>   Each student attendee will be provided with a $250 travel stipend, as well as all meals and 3 nights lodging (double occupancy). Applicants focusing on the nexus of technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship will be given preference.  
     
    The location is Eugene, Oregon in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, a spectacular setting at this time of year. This is a great opportunity for doctoral students to learn from leading scholars and contemporary work in the field.

    The Israel Strategy Conference (http://isc.org.il/index.php) will be holding its annual Doctoral Consortium at the 2010 meetings. The consortium will be held on Monday, December 27th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

     

    The coordinators of the consortium are Robert Salomon (NYU) and Susan Perkins (Northwestern). Faculty facilitators include: Brian Silverman (Toronto), Ed Zajac (Northwestern), Gabriel Szulanski (INSEAD), Michael Lubatkin (U. of Connecticut), Miriam Erez (Technion), and others TBD.

     

    The Israel Strategy Conference Doctoral Consortium is most valuable to Ph.D. candidates interested in conducting leading-edge research and teaching in Strategy and related areas.  The consortium will address key issues in academic life such as research methods particularly suited for pursuing questions in Strategy research, solving methodological challenges, and choosing dissertation topics, among others.

     

    Doctoral students in the proposal/dissertation stage will have the opportunity to present their research, and receive feedback, in a thesis development workshop. Doctoral students who do not wish to present their research are still invited to apply to the doctoral consortium; however, preference will be given to more advanced students.

     

    The application deadline for students wishing to present their work is Thursday, July 1, 2010. The application deadline for students wishing to attend without presentation is Friday, October 1, 2010. Only electronic applications will be considered.
