Research in management revolves around firms and markets, operating at a macro-meso level, but necessitates assumptions about the behavior of individuals. The assumptions of neoclassical economics may be ubiquitous but progress has been made in offering refinements grounded in behavioral and cognitive research. Challenges still lie ahead as we endeavor to develop realistic, parsimonious, and generalizable theories linking micro behavior to macro outcomes in organizations and markets.

In Behavioral Strategy: Prominent Questions, Paper Development, a professional development workshop at the AoM Montréal meeting, distinguished panelists will comment on the state of the art and then join roundtable discussions aimed at furthering our work. We expect a diverse crowd, novices and experts, some prominent and some promising, from multiple disciplines (economics, psychology, sociology, organizational theory), utilizing a range of methods: experiments, simulations, archival data, fieldwork and more.

Advance Your Own Work! Submit an Extended Abstract

To have your work discussed at a roundtable and commented upon by our panelists, submit an extended abstract (500 words), including an overview of your research topic and questions, the method, the expected contributions or key findings (if available). Comment on the most important challenges you face in crafting your paper for journal submission. Include up to four key words. The Best Behavioral Strategy Work in Progress award will be bestowed on one lucky participant.

A snag on the PDW website has been corrected and registration has been extended by a few days. Send your abstract by June 14, 2010 to mbehstrategy@gmail.com. Submit early for the best chance of acceptance! À Bientôt!

    With apologies for cross-posting:

We are excited to announce that the 2010 New Doctoral Student Consortium (NDSC) will be held this August at the Academy of Management (AoM) annual conference in the historic city of Montreal, Quebec.

The NDSC is an invaluable resource to new Ph.D. students pursuing a degree in a management-related field. Through an intensive, one-day series of presentations, workshops, and networking events, the NDSC helps ease the transition for new students by sharing valuable information on the AoM annual conference experience, life as a doctoral student, and the general pursuit of a career in academia.

The NDSC provides participants a unique opportunity to interact with AoM division chairs and senior doctoral students, learn inside information on publishing, meet future collaborators and coauthors, make new friends, and engage in active discussions related to the students' academic goals. In just one day, doctoral students have the chance to be part of an extensive academic social network while learning and experiencing the potentials of becoming a management scholar!

We request your assistance in helping us to spread the word about the NDSC. Please forward, mention, or otherwise share this opportunity with incoming or new doctoral students.

The 2010 NDSC will be held on Saturday, August 7th, from 8:00am - 5:00pm. Other events associated with the NDSC include a Friday evening social at the Irish Embassy, starting at 6:30pm, and a Saturday evening reception after the Consortium. For more information, including registration details, please visit our website at http://group.aomonline.org/ndsc.

Please note, space is limited and registration is confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis. Last year we had an extensive waiting list. To ensure that they are not left out, please encourage students to register early. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us via e-mail at ndsc.2010.montreal@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you in Montreal!

    Regards,

New Doctoral Student Consortium Organizing Committee – 2010

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Dear colleagues,

We hope that you can join us at the Academy for a professional development workshop on Firms, Ecosystems and Innovation. Please see the details below.

Firms, Ecosystems and Innovation (Sponsored by TIM, BPS)

Professional Development Workshop, 2010 AoM Annual Meeting (Montréal, Canada)

    Saturday, Aug 7th, 1:30PM - 3:30PM

Location: Palais des Congres, 512 H

    Organizers:

    Rahul Kapoor, University of Pennsylvania

    Anne Parmigiani, University of Oregon

    Discussants:

    Ron Adner, Dartmouth College

    Allan Afuah, University of Michigan

    Carliss Baldwin, Harvard University

John Paul MacDuffie, University of Pennsylvania

    Will Mitchell, Duke University

    Workshop overview:

A firm's ability to create and capture value from its innovation is critically shaped by the web of interdependent activities and technologies that exist within an ecosystem. Many streams of literatures relate to the theme of innovation in the context of ecosystems. Prominent among these are literatures on strategic alliances and networks, firm boundaries, product and system architectures, new product development, technology and industry evolution. However, these literatures have not explicitly considered the set of complementarities and the differing nature of interdependencies that may be present among activities in the ecosystem, and which may play an important role in shaping firm strategies and performance outcomes.  As scholars and practitioners are increasingly viewing firms through an ecosystem lens, there is a need to take stock of the relevant literatures that relate to this emerging theme and to guide the next phase of theoretical and empirical research. We hope that this professional development workshop would help in achieving at least a part of this objective and in creating a cumulative body of knowledge.

    Workshop format and registration:

Participants will have the opportunity to hear and learn from some of the leading scholars in strategy and innovation. We intend this to be a working session, helping authors develop their early-stage work, with a focus on sharpening their questions, framing and contributions. We are open to the different theoretical and methodological approaches.

Interested participants should register at https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg and send a 3-5 page extended abstract to ecosystem@wharton.upenn.edu by July 19. To ensure high quality feedback and discussion, this workshop is limited to 40 participants.

    Key questions and themes:

While participants can choose a wide variety of questions, we offer some suggestive themes to guide their participation:

    ·                     How does the nature of activities carried out by firms and the structure of the ecosystem interact with the evolution of technologies and industries?

    ·                     How do choices regarding technology and product platforms affect coordination and competitive advantage?

    ·                     How is value determined, divided, and captured among ecosystem partners?

    ·                     What are the different models of collaborative innovation and the boundary conditions for their success?

    ·                     How are different relationships managed within the ecosystem (upstream vs. downstream; familiar vs. new partners; same vs. different industries; etc.) and what are their implications for innovation and firm performance?

    ·                     How does the nature of interdependencies among activities affect firm governance choices?

    ·                     How do firms manage and sustain their ecosystems?

    ·                     How can we use different levels of analysis (firm, industry, ecosystem) and theories that focus on these different levels to analyze innovation and firm performance?

    Apologies for cross listings...

    Call for PDW Participants:

'What is quality in strategy research?'

    Academy of Management Meetings

    Montreal, Canada

    Saturday, August 7th

Part 1 (open to all): 1:30pm-3pm

    Part 2 (requires pre-registration): 3pm-6pm

    Le Palais Des Congres, 516A

    Sponsored by the BPS Division

The strategy field encompasses a diverse set of research perspectives and topic areas. This diversity is a strength of the field, but it also poses a challenge to scholars in strategy: It is often unclear how various literatures relate and why certain papers are considered exemplars of high-quality strategy research. The upcoming article in Strategic Organization, "Recognizing and Encouraging High Quality Research in Strategy," puts forth a framework for thinking about and evaluating the quality of strategy research. Motivated by this call to action, this PDW has three central goals: (1) to consider the question of what is quality in strategy research; (2) apply the framework to current working papers as a means to provide feedback on junior faculty work; and (3) critique and refine this framework.

This two-part, highly interactive PDW will bring together a group of junior faculty and doctoral students with mid-career and senior strategy scholars to both discuss and apply quality benchmarks. The first part of the PDW will begin with a panel involving senior scholars in strategy to discuss and debate the question of what is quality in strategy research and the value of quality 'metrics' in evaluating research. (This panel is open to all Academy attendees and requires no pre-registration. Confirmed panelists include Witold Henisz, Anita McGahan, Hayagreeva Rao, and Jan Rivkin.) Following the panel, registered participants will meet in "roundtable" format to apply the framework to their respective working papers. Each roundtable discussion will be led by two of the PDW workshop facilitators, listed below. We will conclude with a discussion of the framework and the value of such criteria in moving the field forward. Our focal audience for the paper workshop is junior faculty with working papers close to journal submission. We also welcome doctoral students who wish to participate in the discussion on the quality criteria and gain experience in the review process.

We are now soliciting submissions for the paper development workshop. This workshop will provide an opportunity to both receive high quality feedback on working papers and to discuss and debate the merits of a framework to think about quality in strategy research.  Hands-on experience applying quality criteria will both add structure to the paper discussions as well as facilitate a richer discussion of the quality criteria, allowing greater refinement. At the end of the session, participants will have not only a set of comments and discussion on their working papers, but also exposure to a set of tools that can be applied in both reviewing and writing future work.

In order to ensure high quality feedback and discussion, the paper workshop component (3pm-6pm) will be limited to 30 participants. Submissions should be sent via email to Brian Silverman (Silverman@rotman.utoronto.ca), by July 1st, 2010. Papers should be full working papers, but need not be under review. We encourage submissions from a diversity of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives as well as both empirical and theoretical contributions.

We look forward to your submissions and participation!

    Dear Academy Member,

We are conducting a survey of AOM members to explore their use and/or interest in using technology to collect data in their research. Technological advances, beyond changing what we study, are changing how we go about studying it, yet we know little about the range of ways researchers are using technologies and the implications these technologies raise.

We would like to learn about your experiences, interests, and opinions in using various technologies to collect data. The survey is designed for all Academy members. It will take about 10-20 minutes to complete. The results will be presented at a showcase symposium at the 2010 AOM meeting:  Monday, August 9, 2010, 11:30-1:00 pm, Delta Centre-Ville, St-Laurent.

     APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTINGS

    Dear colleagues,

We hope that you can join us at this year's Academy meeting for a professional development workshop on Talent & Technology Brokerage. Please see the details below.

Unveiling the Process of Brokerage for External Talent and Technology

(Sponsored by OMT, HR, TIM and BPS)

Professional Development Workshop, 2010 AoM Annual Meeting (Montréal, Canada)

    Session number: 59

    Date: Friday, Aug 6th, 10:00AM - 1:00PM

Location: Palais des Congres, 511 A

    Organizers:

    Marko Coh, London Business School

    Felipe Monteiro, University of Pennsylvania

    Facilitators:

    Peter Cappelli, University of Pennsylvania

Andrew Hargadon, University of California, Davis

David Obstfeld, University of California, Irvine

    Isabel Fernandez-Mateo, London Business School

    Tim Pollock, Pennsylvania State University

    Workshop overview:

The aim of this highly interactive workshop is to start unveiling the process of brokerage for external talent and technology. Talent and technology are two key organizational resources, and organizations often engage specialized brokers to help them source these resources, yet we still know little about what such brokers actually do. While literature has traditionally focused on the network aspects of brokerage, recently scholars have started to identify mechanisms that transpire in brokerage in different sourcing contexts. This workshop will bring together scholars interested in brokerage for talent and technology, to jointly explore the underlying mechanisms at play in brokerage for these "hard to evaluate" assets.

We will address so far unanswered questions, such as:

    ·                     What are the stages in brokerage for external talent and what are the stages in brokerage for external technology? Are they similar?

    ·                     What is a broker's role in each of the stages?

    ·                     When does a broker behave opportunistically (as tertius gaudens), as opposed to synergistically (as tertius iungens)?

    ·                     How do the relationships a broker has with the brokered parties affect the outcomes?

    Workshop format:

Participants will address these (and other) questions in small groups. Group discussions will be moderated by renowned scholars from both talent and technology brokerage fields. After group discussions panelists will offer their views and reflections to the entire audience. We will then open the floor for a general discussion.

    Registration:

Interested participants should register at https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg. The deadline for registration is 1 August 2010. After registration the participants will receive an e-mail from the workshop organizer (Marko Coh, mcoh.phd2006@london.edu) with further details.

    Submission guidelines

ISC will consider unpublished original paper proposals relating to the above topics of interest. International and global perspectives are encouraged. Proposals can be conceptual or empirical, quantitative or qualitative. Published papers or papers that were accepted for publication prior to the submission deadline will not be considered for the conference. We seek to accept a relatively small number of high-quality papers that target top tier academic journals. Submitted papers will go through a double blind review by a panel of several reviewers. Submissions will be evaluated based on their academic rigor, relevance, and contribution to the field of strategic management. Accepted proposals will be assigned to paper sessions or interactive sessions based on this evaluation.

The deadline for online submissions of paper proposals is June 15th, 2010.

Paper proposals, written in English, should clearly identify the research questions and methodology. If available, the main results, implications, and contributions should also be briefly discussed. Paper proposals are limited to 2 pages of text and 1 additional page of references. Use double spacing with 1-inch margins all around and a font size no smaller than 11 pt. The title of your paper must be included in the header of the proposal and should exactly match the title provided in the online submission form.

Please do not include any author identifying information in the proposal.

To submit the paper proposal, upload your proposal in a Word or PDF file format to the Submissions Section of the ISC website at:

http://www.isc.org.il/ where additional guidelines will be provided. As part of the submission process you will be required to enter your contact details and affiliation, list your co-authors, and select a topic category that best applies to your paper. Presenting authors must be available to present their papers any time during the conference. There will be no changes in the program to accommodate specific time preferences. If the presenting author cannot be available during December 28-29, please don't submit a proposal. An author may be designated as the presenter of only one paper, but can be listed as a co-author of up to 3 papers.

The Submission Section of the ISC website will open in April, 2010 and will be available until June 15, 2010. Notices to authors will be sent in August, 2010, indicating whether the proposed paper has been selected for inclusion in the conference program, and whether it has been accepted to a paper session or an interactive session. Authors of accepted papers will be required to submit a short abstract and the full-length paper (for paper sessions) by November 1st, 2010. Presenting authors must register to the conference by September 1st, 2010. The conference program, with a detailed schedule of sessions and events will be released in November, 2010.

    ISC Best Paper Award

Select paper proposals which receive the highest assessment in the review process will be nominated as finalists for the ISC Best Paper Award. The finalists will be asked to submit a full paper for an additional blind- review process by a distinguished panel. The selected winner(s) of the ISC Best Paper Award will receive a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize sponsored by Rotem Strategy, an Israeli-based strategy consulting firm. The winning paper will be announced in the concluding session of ISC.

    Conference format

The conference will start with a reception and a special session which will be held on the evening of December 27th. Papers will be assigned to various session formats based on common themes, scheduled on December 28- 29, 2010. Each author whose paper is accepted for presentation in a paper session will be given 15 minutes to present the paper. Following the presentations, designated discussants who have carefully read the papers will present their main comments and provide suggestions for improving the papers and getting them ready for publication. Discussants will also offer an integration of the papers presented in their sessions, which will be followed by questions from and general discussion by the audience. In addition, the conference will feature themed interactive sessions which will offer authors the opportunity to interactively present their papers and discuss them with the audience. The conference will also feature keynote speeches and special sessions to be noted in the conference program.

    Doctoral Consortium

ISC will be holding its annual Doctoral Consortium on Monday, December 27th, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The coordinators of the consortium are Robert Salomon (NYU) and Susan Perkins (Northwestern).
