Evolving Roles of the (Honest and Dishonest) Businessman and the Government in the 21st Century, or, Fundamental Things that Business Scholars and Educators Should Dare to Care about

    ABSTRACT

The recent global economic crisis has provoked renewed attention to systems for organizing economic activity around the world.  In particular, the efficacy and merits of capitalism-and the free enterprise system that it entails-have been called into question by political leaders and the general public across the globe.  That the world has 'melted down' economically is deemed sufficient proof of the failure of capitalism as a system for human societies to engage in meeting members' needs and wants and in producing wealth and progress.   The ethical foundations of business education have been swept into this broad critique with troubling reputational repercussions for business faculty and students.

In counter, renewed support for proponents of free markets provides evidence of opposing interpretations of our current economic situation and related recommendations regarding appropriate/effective organization of economic activity.  Yet these views, and indeed first principles inherent in business (education) are seldom explored in the Academy.

Given this year's conference theme, a critical and informed examination of perhaps the most foundational underpinning of business and management-economic organization where free markets are central-is urgently called for.  This integrated research and practice PDW will advance that aim by introducing academic, policy and practitioner views relevant to management faculty.

The PDW experts will (re-)introduce key issues relevant to this debate and pose important questions for our AoM colleagues to consider as they design their courses, develop their research programs and engage as thought leaders with a range of audiences.

    Call for PDW Participants:

'What is quality in strategy research?'

    Academy of Management Meetings

    Montreal, Canada

    Saturday, August 7th

Part 1 (open to all): 1:30pm-3pm

    Part 2 (requires pre-registration): 3pm-6pm

    Le Palais Des Congres, 516A

    Sponsored by the BPS Division

The strategy field encompasses a diverse set of research perspectives and topic areas. This diversity is a strength of the field, but it also poses a challenge to scholars in strategy: It is often unclear how various literatures relate and why certain papers are considered exemplars of high-quality strategy research. The upcoming article in Strategic Organization, "Recognizing and Encouraging High Quality Research in Strategy," puts forth a framework for thinking about and evaluating the quality of strategy research. Motivated by this call to action, this PDW has three central goals: (1) to consider the question of what is quality in strategy research; (2) apply the framework to current working papers as a means to provide feedback on junior faculty work; and (3) critique and refine this framework.

This two-part, highly interactive PDW will bring together a group of junior faculty and doctoral students with mid-career and senior strategy scholars to both discuss and apply quality benchmarks. The first part of the PDW will begin with a panel involving senior scholars in strategy to discuss and debate the question of what is quality in strategy research and the value of quality 'metrics' in evaluating research. (This panel is open to all Academy attendees and requires no pre-registration. Confirmed panelists include Witold Henisz, Anita McGahan, Hayagreeva Rao, and Jan Rivkin.) Following the panel, registered participants will meet in "roundtable" format to apply the framework to their respective working papers. Each roundtable discussion will be led by two of the PDW workshop facilitators, listed below. We will conclude with a discussion of the framework and the value of such criteria in moving the field forward. Our focal audience forthe paper workshop is junior faculty with working papers close to journal submission. We also welcome doctoral students who wish to participate in the discussion on the quality criteria and gain experience in the review process.

We are now soliciting submissions for the paper development workshop. This workshop will provide an opportunity to both receive high quality feedback on working papers and to discuss and debate the merits of a framework to think about quality in strategy research.  Hands-on experience applying quality criteria will both add structure to the paper discussions as well as facilitate a richer discussion of the quality criteria, allowing greater refinement. At the end of the session, participants will have not only a set of comments and discussion on their working papers, but also exposure to a set of tools that can be applied in both reviewing and writing future work.

In order to ensure high quality feedback and discussion, the paper workshop component (3pm-6pm) will be limited to 30 participants. Submissions should be sent via email to Brian Silverman (Silverman@rotman.utoronto.ca), by July 1st, 2010. Papers should be full working papers, but need not be under review. We encourage submissions from a diversity of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives as well as both empirical and theoretical contributions.

We look forward to your submissions and participation!

2010 INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition

    Call for Submissions

    Submission Deadline: August 2, 2010

We invite you to submit your dissertation proposal to the INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition.  Now in its 18th year, this competition is one of the most prestigious available to doctoral students studying organizations.  Finalists will present their dissertation proposals in a workshop on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Fall INFORMS Conference held in Austin, TX.  During the workshop finalists will receive detailed feedback from a panel of respected organizational scholars who act as final judges for the competition.  The all-day workshop also provides a wonderful opportunity to interact with a small group of future colleagues.  At the workshop, the judges will award a first and second prize.  The First Prize winner receives a free trip to the Organization Science Winter Conference (registration, lodging, and $500 toward airfare and expenses).  Second prize is a $250 honorarium.

In order for their dissertation proposals to be considered for this competition, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

    1.         Students must have defended their dissertation proposal between

August 1, 2009 and August 1, 2010, but not yet defended their dissertation.

    2.         The expected completion date for students' dissertations should be

on or before July 1, 2011.

    3.         No part of the dissertation or dissertation proposal may be

accepted for publication, provisionally or otherwise, at an academic journal prior to submission for this competition.

We encourage all eligible doctoral students who are studying topics related to organization science to submit summaries of their dissertation proposals.  Dissertation proposals addressing issues related to any aspect of organization theory, organizational behavior, strategy, or entrepreneurship are welcome.

Submissions should meet the following formatting criteria:

    1.         Proposal summaries must be no longer than 15 double-spaced pages in

12-point Times font with 1-inch margins.  Up to 7 additional pages containing references and exhibits may be included.

    2.         Because this is a dissertation proposal competition, empirical

results should not appear in the dissertation proposal summary or appendices.

Dissertation proposals will be judged based on soundness of theory, methodological rigor, and contribution to the field of organization science.  In keeping with the mission of the INFORMS College on Organization Science, boldness and innovation of the dissertation will be important criteria in the judging process.

The competition is being coordinated this year by Mary Zellmer-Bruhn of the University of Minnesota.  We are fortunate to again be using Organization Science's ScholarOne manuscript submission system to manage dissertation proposal submissions and reviews.  The web address for submissions is http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/orgsci.  If you do not already have an account you will have to create one.  This is a quick and easy process.

Applications must be received by August 2, 2010.  Dissertation proposal summaries that do not meet the formatting criteria will be returned to students without review.  In addition to the proposal summary, each application must include a nomination letter from the applicant's advisor certifying that the student has advanced to candidacy and is likely to complete the dissertation by July 1, 2011 – there is no need for a detailed recommendation letter.

Please follow Organization Science's instructions for submitting your proposal. A couple of important things to note:

    •          Your manuscript type is PROPOSAL

    •          Under section 2, Attributes, please select a few key words to aid

    in assigning reviewers

    •          Under Section 4, Reviewers and Editors, do not recommend any

reviewers. However, you should indicate Mary Zellmer-Bruhn as your preferred SENIOR EDITOR.

    •          Under section 5, Details and Comments, Paste your cover letter into

the window and use the browse attachment function to attach your COVER PAGE as well as YOUR ADVISOR'S NOMINATION LETTER

    •          Under section 6, Upload Files, upload a copy of your proposal

WITHOUT ITS COVER PAGE OR OTHER IDENTIFYING INFORMATION. The first page should include only your dissertation title and abstract.

    Please direct any inquiries to:

    Special Issue on Technology Entrepreneurship

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15, 2010

    Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal

Guest Editors: Kathleen Eisenhardt, Suresh Kotha, Alan Meyer & Nandini Rajagopalan

    Background and Purpose

This special issue will explore research questions at the nexus of entrepreneurship and technology. Technology entrepreneurship draws from two well-established, but related fields--entrepreneurship and technical innovation. The challenge for technical entrepreneurs is not only to create a new business, but also to invent new technologies and shape nascent markets. The challenge for policy makers and other institutional actors is to frame the context in which such entrepreneurs will emerge and prosper.  The intent of this special issue is to provide a forum to advance our understanding of the research issues that fall at this nexus.

We invite scholars from entrepreneurship, strategy, innovation, economics, history, sociology, organizational behavior, and technology studies to contribute papers to this special issue. We welcome studies that: (1) employ a variety of methodologies, from statistical, simulation, and mathematical modeling to case-studies; (2) examine multiple levels of analysis including the entrepreneurial team, technology, firm, industry and country; (3) employ traditional or emerging theoretical approaches such as bricolage, effectuation, and improvisation; (4) examine the creation or transformation of technology-based industries; and (5) study venture formation in novel industry and institutional settings.

    Research Questions

We seek papers that provide new theoretical perspectives and/or empirical insights for technology entrepreneurship in both for-profit and non-profit sectors. Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to the

    following:

Although many studies of entrepreneurship focus on individual entrepreneurs, teams of co-founders typically join together in launching technology-based businesses.  How do these teams effectively work together? Do the characteristics of the co-founders influence the recognition of technological opportunities and their subsequent development? How do co-founders share ownership?

Context is likely to play a key role in the formation and evolution of technology-based businesses. How do regulatory and tax policies affect such ventures? Is technology entrepreneurship driven by discoveries in basic science, M&A and IPO activity, number of technically-trained professionals, national culture, or other factors?

What is the interplay between technology-based ventures and established firms? How do the dynamics of technical ecosystems, rivalry, and platform-based industries influence the strategies of technical entrepreneurs?

Much research on technology entrepreneurship uses the biotechnology and semiconductor industries as its setting. As a result, we know less about entrepreneurial activity in novel areas such as ventures that rely on user-driven technical innovations, pursue technical innovations for education, and target technologies for developing economies. Is technology entrepreneurship different in these settings?

Since universities are often sources of the new technologies that create entrepreneurial opportunities, studies are needed to explicate the roles of these actors. What are the strategies that universities employ to aid in the emergence and growth of technology-based firms?  How does technical knowledge diffuse from university research to potential entrepreneurs? What role do academic scientists play in the venture creation process?

Intellectual property is central to technology entrepreneurship.

What are the various approaches to both formal and informal IP protection undertaken by technology entrepreneurs? What are the implications of these approaches for venture performance and industry evolution? How do these approaches influence the returns to technical innovation?

A significant number of technology-based ventures are funded by venture capital, corporate venture capital, and angel investors. But, these investors often go beyond providing financial resources. How do these investors nurture venture success? Do these investors differentially influence firm outcomes such as innovation and growth? How is corporate governance affected by the presence of diverse investors?

Recognizing the challenges of degraded natural environments and expensive energy, entrepreneurs are launching ventures that promote sustainable business practices and commercialize clean and/or energy efficient technologies. What unique managerial practices and business models are employed in these firms? Which policy interventions encourage their formation and growth?

Technology entrepreneurs who seek to advance social ends rather than just commercial ones are becoming increasingly prominent. How do these entrepreneurs create value? Who captures the value that is created?

How can these entrepreneurs benefit from customer creation of content, client empowerment, and open source business models? Does the emergence of technology ventures addressing social concerns influence other institutional actors such as NGOs and national governments?

Deadline, Submission and Review Process: The deadline for submission is

November 15, 2010.   Please indicate that you would like your manuscript

to be considered for the special issue. To learn more about the SEJ and this special Issue, including Submission Guidelines and the online submission process, please visit http://sej.strategicmanagement.net.
