Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw your attention and cordially invite you to a PDW on "Teaching Design Thinking for Innovation".
| Submission: 14179 | Sponsor(s): (MED) | PDW Cosponsor(s): TIM / BPS Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 7 2010 10:30AM - 2:00PM at Le Palais Des Congres in 519B | Teaching Design Thinking for Innovation | | | | | |
Organizer: Katharina Hoelzle; Berlin Institute of Technology;
Organizer: Ulrich Weinberg; Hasso Plattner Institute, School of Design Thinking;
Facilitator: Hanswerner Dreissigacker; SAP;
Facilitator: Philipp Schaefer; IDEO;
The Design Thinking process is a human-centered set of methods and tools which combines approaches found in design and ethnography with technology and business skills found in strategic and innovation management. We will generate a hands-on classroom experience for the participants of this PDW to expose you to the basic principles of Design Thinking and how to apply them in management education. The aim is to create an atmosphere of mutual learning and sharing in order to solve individual, corporate, or societal problems. Taking part in this PDW, the participants experience a complete Design Thinking cycle: empathy by observation, project definition, prototyping, soliciting feedback and iterating. An international faculty will guide participants through each stage of the process and provide insights on how to apply and teach Design Thinking to everyday work processes and problem solutions. Additionally, the facilitators will give different views and approaches of Design Thinking in academia, industry, and consultancy.
In order to make the Design Thinking experience as challenging and exciting as possible, we aim to have attendees from various disciplines and backgrounds. Please provide us with a short CV and one or two sentences why you would like to attend this workshop. Submit CV to katharina.hoelzle@tim.tu-berlin.de by July, 4th 2010.
Best regards

APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING
dear colleagues, we would like to invite you to our symposium entitled "Artefacts at the Centre of Routines" at this year's Academy meeting
All welcome.
Artefacts at the Centre of Routines
The Contribution of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Performativity
in Advancing Routines Theory
Presenter Symposium - Aug 10 2010, 1:15pm - 2:45pm, Le Palais Des Congres, Room 513E
Panelists: Paul Leonardi, Northwestern University, Mark Zbaracki, Ivey School of Business, Marc Ventresca, Oxford Said Business School, Luciana D'Adderio, The University of Edinburgh and AIM Research
Discussant: Fabrizio Ferraro (IESE)
Abstract
The aim of this thought-provoking panel is to discuss how the scholarly field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) can provide new standpoints to advance our understanding of routines and capabilities dynamics. Specifically, we show how recent advances in STS and Performativity Theory can provide new tools to capture the situated micro-level dynamics underpinning routines evolution and adaptation. These include new ways to characterise the key role of material artefacts and distributed agencies in influencing routines and capabilities' emergence and persistence, and, ultimately, organizational change and stability. To address these important but as yet underexplored issues our panel includes some of those scholars that have made key contributions towards developing STS theories in relation to their application to studies of organization, routines and practices.
The panel is sponsored by the Advanced Institute of Management (AIM) Research and organised by AIM Innovation Fellow Luciana D'Adderio
For further information see Luciana D'Adderio's AIM Fellowship Webpage at: http://www.dependableinnovation.org/.
AIM's webpage can be found at: http://www.aimresearch.org/
The symposium is co-sponsored by OMT and TIM.

Dear TIM scholars:
I would like to call your attention to the following PDW session at the upcoming Academy of Management Meetings in Montreal:
| Ask The Experts Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 7th, 2010 3:15PM - 4:45PM at The Queen Elizabeth in St-Maurice | |
| Chair: David A. Waldman; Arizona State U.; Chair: Donald Siegel; U. at Albany, SUNY; This PDW provides insights from chief editors and associate editors of highly ranked journals including AMJ (James Combs), AMR (Amy Hillman), SMJ (Will Mitchell), and Personnel Psychology (Fred Morgeson). We also have two representatives from top book publishers: The University of Chicago Press (David Pervin) and Sage Publications (Lisa Shaw). The format of the session will be interactive, in that each panelist will make some remarks about their experience in handling SIM-related themes, followed by brief Q&A. Once the opening remarks and individual Q&A's have been concluded, some time will be spent at the end as open interaction among the attendees and the panelists. This workshop is being offered in response to the continuing need in the SIM community to develop research to the level where it can compete effectively for space in the top management journals. As the competition to publish in these top journals increases, sessions like this one can provide assistance to those researchers who are struggling to craft their research at this level. In addition, information will be provided for individuals interested in publishing books pertaining to SIM-related themes. The scheduled time and day of the session is from 3:15-4:45 pm on Saturday August 7. No Pre-registration is required. |

Towards an Integrated View of External Knowledge Sourcing (Sponsored by BPS, TIM, IM, ENT)
Professional Development Workshop, 2010 AoM Annual Meeting (Montréal, Canada)
Saturday, Aug 7th, 3:00PM - 5:30PM
Location: Le Palais Des Congres, 511C
Organizers:
Thomas Klueter, University of Pennsylvania
Felipe Monteiro, University of Pennsylvania
Discussants:
Gautam Ahuja; U. of Michigan
Juan Alcacer; Harvard U.
Bruno Cassiman; IESE Business School
Gary Dushnitsky; London Business School
Felipe Monteiro; U. of Pennsylvania
Harbir Singh; U. of Pennsylvania
Workshop overview:
Many scholars share the view that external knowledge sourcing is a critical process that broadens a firm's knowledge base and fosters innovation. Although scholars have implicitly acknowledged that firms can, and do, use different modes to source knowledge outside their boundaries - ranging from technology alliances, acquisitions, corporate venture capital investments, technology scouting to licensing contracts just to name a few - there has there has been little systematic analysis integrating the above modes of external knowledge sourcing. We argue that we need a better understanding of whether, how and in which dimensions those modes are different from each other. This PDW aims at creating a network of scholars who not only have an in-depth understanding of distinct modes of accessing external knowledge but also who are genuinely interested and open to learn how different theoretical lenses and methodological approaches can jointly illuminate an organization process which is so fundamental to firm performance.
Workshop format and registration:
Participants will have the opportunity to hear and learn from some of the leading scholars who have studied how firm source and use external technologies. Pre-registration for the PDW will be required. Pre-registered participants will be asked to complete a short online survey end of July where they will be able to indicate the mode(s) of external knowledge sourcing they consider themselves most familiar with. We will use this information to assign participants to different discussion groups during the PDW.
Interested participants should register at https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg.
Key topics and questions pertinent for this PDW:
- Why should we take an integrated view of external knowledge sourcing?
- Are different modes of external knowledge sourcing complements or substitutes?
- Where is the locus of decision making with respect to modes of external knowledge sourcing and do different modes of external knowledge sourcing compete for similar internal resources?
- When do firms transition from using one mode to another and do firms stop using distinct modes?
- What are typical patterns of knowledge sourcing portfolios used by firms and are there optimal configurations to tap into external knowledge?
- What are the connections between foreign location choice, modes and external knowledge sourcing
- What are major trends emerging in different modes of external knowledge sourcing.
If you have any question or suggestions about the PDW, please contact the organizers at klueter@wharton.upenn.edu (Thomas Klueter) or luizm@wharton.upenn.edu (Felipe Monteiro).

Special Issue on
Corporate Entrepreneurship
Call for Papers
Guest Editors: Andrew Corbett, Jeff Covin, Gina O'Connor and Christopher Tucci
Submissions due September 10, 2010
The field of Corporate Entrepreneurship as a focus of scholarly attention has grown and become increasingly complex in recent years. Corporate Entrepreneurship research focuses on ways that companies engage in new business creation to grow, replace or augment shrinking businesses and thereby sustain or create shareholder value. Its objective is strategic renewal based on innovation, and therefore is a subject of concern to readers of and contributors to the Journal of Product Innovation Management.
From its origins in the scholarly literature in the 1970's and 1980's with Gifford Pinchot's (1985) term of "Intrapreneuring" to communicate the role of individuals who break the norms of traditional organizational cultures in order to bring about new businesses, and Norm Fast's (1978) demonstration that corporate Venturing units fail to survive more than approximately four years, evidence of increasing sophistication in organizations regarding CE is emerging. Coincidentally, scholarly theory is also maturing in this domain, moving from a focus on champions and mavericks to strategic, capability-based, multi-faceted views of CE.
We invite scholars to continue this line of development through this special issue of JPIM. Organizational approaches to corporate rejuvenation, renewal and organic growth are the theme. In particular, we seek contributions to theory that are based on data. Special Issue topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Impact of CE initiatives on organizational performance.
· Organizational structure approaches to CE
· Talent selection, development and retention for CE
· The role of Corporate Venturing (investments in external companies) in organizational renewal
· Portfolio approaches to Corporate Entrepreneurship
· Risk(financial or individual career level) and corporate Entrepreneurship
· Contingency approaches to CE: Variation in CE practices across contextual environments (industry clockspeed and dynamism, corporate diversification levels, organizational turnover rates, etc.).
· Leadership for organizational renewal through CE and linkage of CE to corporate strategy
Manuscript submissions should comply with typical JPIM style guidelines. Please send submissions electronically, with a cover letter to:
