  • 1.  TIM Division Program Highlights, Vancouver 2015

    Posted 07-28-2015 13:29

    Dear TIM Division Member:

We have put together what we believe is an exciting Technology & Innovation Management Division program for those of you attending the Academy of Management annual meeting starting next week Friday August 7 and continuing through Tuesday August 11.  As in recent years, this year the TIM program has been organized in tracks. In principle, the tracks allow conference attendees to follow their favorite topic of interest throughout the Monday and Tuesday of the conference. We provide the program by tracks at the end of this communication (and in the attached document). Some highlights of the TIM program are listed just below.

    FRIDAY AUGUST 7TH

    * How to write your first academic paper (session 44, Fri 8-10am in Vancouver Convention Center (VCC) 205)

    * Early venture evolution (session 76, Fri 10-12am in VCC 003)

    * Advances in patent research (session 52, Fri 8:30-10:30am in VCC 214)

    * Innovating how we teach innovation (session 105, Fri 11:30am-1:30pm in VCC 011)

    SATURDAY AUGUST 8TH

    * TIM Wiley Distinguished Scholar Session:  We are honored to have Carliss Baldwin (Harvard) as this year's recipient.  Come meet one of the leading scholars in the field.  Lunch is provided (session 357, Sat 12-1:30pm, in VCC East Ballroom C)

    * Introduction of seven new datasets for innovation research (session 388 Sat 1-3:30pm in VCC 214)

    * Research Networking: This is a new social event organized in the form of "speed dating" to get to know TIM peers engaged in related research topics (session 472, Sat 5-6:30pm in VCC 216)

    SUNDAY AUGUST 9TH

    * One of our symposia has been selected to be listed in Sunday's prestigious All Academy Theme on "Opening Governance". The symposium is titled "Linking Open Innovation to Business Models". The speakers include Henry Chesbrough (U. of California, Berkeley); Thomas Ritter (Copenhagen Business School); Christopher Lettl (WU Vienna); and Christopher L Tucci (EPF de Lausanne) (session 612,Sun  11:15am-12:45 in the VCC, Room 224)

    * TIM Division Business Meeting. Come hear about the Division and help celebrate our award winners (session 785, Sun 5:30-6:30pm in VCC 109)

    * TIM Division Social. Food is provided (session 805, Sun 6:30-8pm, in VCC 001)

    MONDAY AUGUST 10TH

    * TIM Breakfast (session 818, 7-8am in Fairmont Waterfront Hotel Ballroom A)

    * TIM Plenary. This year's TIM Plenary presents what we believe will be a thought-provoking debate over whether management theories have been adopted too quickly and without sufficient empirical support. Several management theories or frameworks have achieved widespread attention and have become widely used in the practitioners' world, such as Core Competences and Disruptive Innovation. Some scholars have argued that often these theories are not properly tested or developed and that therefore their adoption and usage produces more problems than solutions for our field. Should we, can we, as a scholarly community, have a stronger role in showing which theories are developed and tested enough to be promoted among practitioners? This panel session will present divergent views on what our role should be, and the advantages and disadvantages of the existing transfer process between the theories generated in academia and those adopted by the business world. The plenary features Fernando Suarez (Northeastern U.) as the moderator and Gautam Ahuja (U. of Michigan) as well as Brent Goldfarb (U. of Maryland) as the panelists. Snacks are provided (session 1165, Mon Aug 10 2015 11:30am - 1:00pm at VCC in Room 211)

    * The program also includes three TIM Showcase Symposia that we consider to be among our very best symposium submissions received and which are also expected to attract a substantial audience:

    -  The Past, Present and Future of Technology and Innovation Management Theories (participants: Wolfgang Sachsenhofer, Werner Helmut Hoffmann, Sohyeong Kim, Henry Chesbrough, Ikujiro Nonaka, Neil Kay, Raymond E Miles, Ayano Hirose) (session 1049, Mon, Aug 10 2015 9:45am - 11:15am at VCC in Room 204)

    - Services, Platforms, Business Model Innovations and the Implications for Open Governance (participants: Veronica Martinez, Andrew Neely, Michael Cusumano, Fernando Suarez, Annabelle Gawer, Neil Alison, Andrew Neely, Ivanka Visnjic) (session 1291, Mon, Aug 10 2015 1:15pm - 2:45pm at VCC in Room 216)

    - The Emergence of Radical Inventions: Indicators and Applications (participants: Bart Van Looy, Reinhilde Veugelers, Bruno Cassiman, Raffaele Conti) (session 1409, Mon, Aug 10 2015 3:00pm - 4:30am VCC in Room 204)

As mentioned above, also this year the TIM program has been organized in tracks. Each paper and symposium has been allocated into one of seven tracks (the particular symposia and paper sessions that fall within each of the tracks appear below in full):

Track A. Open & Collaborative Innovation

    Track B. Technology Innovation Strategy
