    Apologies for cross-posting.

We will be hosting a Professional Development Workshop on Innovative Idea Management at the AOM meeting in Boston. We hope you will consider attending!

When: Friday, August 3rd, 10:15-1:45pm. Boston Park Plaza in White Hill Room

Who should attend: Scholars at all levels who would like to either learn from others' use of technology in managing their ideas or who would like to share their own approaches.

Why: As technology grows and our resources for managing scholarly ideas grow, our field can benefit from scholars coming together to share ideas for how to make the most out of the available resources.

Registration is not required, but in order to  focus large and small group discussions within the PDW we ask that potential participants reflect on the questions below and email responses to Tiffany Schroeder (tds38@case.edu) by July 20th:

    1.      What system (could include use of technological tools, paper-based systems, or some combination) are you currently using to organize thoughts/ideas/article notes for use in the writing process?

    a.       What about this system works well for you?

    b.      How would you like to refine or enhance your system or use of systems?

    2.      How do you manage the storage and retrieval of your ideas while working on a paper?
    3.      What would you like to learn in this session?

Technological tools pervade our academic work lives, but we rarely get to see how colleagues incorporate these tools into their everyday work flow. This session will focus on sharing techniques for managing thoughts in the academic writing process. Presenters will demonstrate their own adaptation of various tools (e.g. note taking programs, citation managers, concept mapping technologies, task management resources, etc.) and discuss how these play into the larger work flow. All participants will then engage in table discussions on a specific aspect of the writing process, sharing their own approaches and brainstorming new possibilities for leveraging technology in service of that aspect of their work. Each table will then report out to the larger group. This PDW offers scholars a chance to build a collective knowledge store from which individual scholars can select and tailor ideas according to their own writing needs.

REMINDER – PDW "A variety of theoretical approaches to address contractual issues: complementarities and overlaps"

    Date:  Saturday, August 4, 2012

    Time:  1:00 - 3:00 PM

Location:  Boston Hynes Convention Center, Room 108

Organizers: Valerie Duplat (EDHEC Business School) and Jason Pattit (University of St. Thomas)

Presenters: Valerie Duplat (EDHEC Business School), Fabrice Lumineau (University of Technology Sydney), and Bart Vanneste (INSEAD)

Facilitators: Michael J. Leiblein (The Ohio State University), Jason Pattit (University of St. Thomas), and Libby Weber (University of California, Irvine)

The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for scholars who study inter-firm contracts to engage in a dialogue about current and future research opportunities. In addition, scholars who are not currently conducting research in this area, but have an interest in doing so in the future, are invited to attend this PDW to obtain an overview of the field and to join the discussion.

The workshop will consist of two parts. Three short presentations about contractual issues that have been addressed by different theoretical streams (i.e., transaction cost, relational governance, and psychological theories) will open the PDW. Each presentation will be followed by a discussion between the audience and the presenters lead by a facilitator. This will enable us to explore how these theoretical streams overlap or complement each other, but also to derive new research questions and discuss novel empirical methods.

The second part of the PDW will be a paper development workshop. To participate, please pre-register (https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg) and submit your paper by Sunday, July 15th. A maximum of 30 submissions will be accepted. The papers will be discussed in small groups. Each participant will provide a brief synopsis of their submission to the roundtable that they are assigned to and then receive feedback from the presenters, facilitators and the other participants. Papers will be shared among the respective tables' participants before the PDW. Attendees without a submission will be invited to stay and take part in the discussions.

Overall, the aim of this PDW is to create a network of seasoned and nascent scholars interested in inter-firm contracts. Thus, this PDW provides a forum to communicate with researchers from diverse theoretical backgrounds, which may lead to interesting future collaboration opportunities.

Please put this session on your calendar. For any general questions about the PDW, or to receive the registration code and submit your paper, please contact us: valerie.duplat@edhec.edu or jmpattit@stthomas.edu.

    See you in Boston!

This PDW sets our research directions on the management of internal and external ideas. Idea management refers to a number of important activities taking place before or in parallel with innovation. Idea management is associated with idea generation, sourcing and search, selection, evaluation, development and application. So far, research on idea management in firms is divided into two mainly isolated research streams, one on internal and one on external idea generation and development. This PDW combines and integrates the two research streams, and hence sets out new and challenging research directions for the field of idea management. For clarity, the PDW addresses four key theoretical lenses in the field of idea management: - Strategic research on the conditions for generating, searching for, sourcing, selecting, evaluating, developing and applying ideas from internal and external sources - Research on the importance of the role, structure and dynamics of networks, communities and other types of social relationships for idea management - Motivation and stimuli for internal and external idea generation and development - Research on individual and organizational learning processes in internal and external idea management The PDW addresses both academic and practitioners perspectives on the topic. The involved team of researcher consists of experienced scholars with a strong track record and junior researchers who bring in upcoming and challenging research perspectives into this domain.

Researchers of strategy often think about organizations and markets, not individuals. Scholars who study individuals infrequently consider their behavior in aggregation. Yet the two are intertwined: If we understand individual behavior, we can develop realistic theories of organizations and markets. And by observing behavior in organizations and markets, we can understand individual behavior better.

Returning for the third year, Behavioral Strategy is a meeting place for an interdisciplinary group. Some of us study individuals, others research organizations, markets, and cultures. This year, we will engage and be engaged by three scientists who made discoveries and developed methods related to our interests: David Lazer, expert on computational social science (Science 2006; PNAS 2007; Science 2009); Hod Lipson, co-inventor of the robotic scientist (Nature 2005; Science 2009; PNAS 2010); and Martin Nowak, a mathematician and biologist whose discoveries unravel the evolution of human cooperation and language.

Advance your own work: Submit an abstract! The panelists can advise you on theory, method, and framing. If you wish, submit a 1,000-word summary by July 15. In it, identify how the research is related to behavioral strategy. One submission may win the Behavioral Strategy Prize.

Interested? Please register now. Seating is limited! Regrettably, we cannot allow walk-ins.

    Colleagues,

Are you interested in researching or teaching about clean technology or green product design?

Are you concerned about endocrine-disrupting chemicals and wondering from where cleaner substances will come and how they will move from bench scale discoveries to industrial scale production facilities?

Are you looking for interesting case studies of innovation, commercialization of environmental technologies or eco-preneurship?

Are you looking for interesting case studies of pollution prevention and environmental risk management?

Are you looking for a science-based framework for connecting issues as seemingly disparate as environmental health, climate change and resource efficiency, as well as for understanding the greening of individual firms or entire sectors?

If so, the Professional Development Workshop to be held at the Academy of Management's Annual Meeting in Boston, and described below, will be of interest to you.

50 Years after Silent Spring: The Past, Present and Future of the Global Chemical Enterprise

    Friday, August 03, 2012 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM
    Marriott Copley Place, Salon H

This PDW honors the 50th anniversary of the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring by bringing "toxics" back to the fore of scholarship on organizations and the natural environment. It will introduce "green chemistry" to management scholars; describe its scientific, commercial and regulatory dimensions and place these into historical context; and illustrate green chemistry's central role in innovation for business sustainability.

Participants will explore the potential for interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of business sustainability and industry-scale chemistry by identifying ways to integrate perspectives on green chemistry into their own research and teaching. The PDW aims to develop a community of scholars that is interested in research that uses the chemicals sector as a site for developing knowledge about business sustainability and innovation; and in teaching business students and executives about green chemistry, its role in sustainable development and its importance for corporate environmental strategy.

    Co-organizers:           Steve Maguire (McGill U)

Robert Peoples (American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute)

    Facilitators:                Pratima Bansal (Western U)

    Stephanie Bertels (Simon Fraser U)

    Arthur Daemmrich (Harvard Business School)
    Andrew Hoffman (U Michigan)

    Andrew Nelson (U Oregon)
    Deborah Steketee (Aquinas College)

Who Should Attend: This PDW is designed for management academics with an interest in researching about sustainable development, corporate environmental strategy and innovation, i.e. scholars from ONE and TIM. It will also be of interest to OMT scholars interested in change in institutional fields; and to BPS scholars interested in the implications of technological and regulatory change on industries and firm strategies. On the pedagogy front, it will have great value for scholars interested in incorporating green chemistry into teaching of courses about business sustainability, corporate environmental strategy, strategies for sustainable development, etc., as it will direct them to relevant tools and materials (e.g. ppt slides for lectures, case studies, etc.).
