2012 INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition
Call for Submissions
Submission Deadline: July 16, 2012
We invite you to submit your dissertation proposal to the INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition. Now in its 20th year, this competition is one of the most prestigious available to doctoral students studying organizations. Eight finalists will be chosen, based on reviews by experienced referees. Finalists will present their dissertation proposals in a workshop on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the fall INFORMS Conference held in Phoenix, AZ. During the workshop finalists will receive detailed feedback from a panel of respected organizational scholars who act as final judges for the competition. The all-day workshop also provides a wonderful opportunity to interact with a small group of future colleagues. At the workshop, the judges will select a winner and a runner up.
In order for their dissertation proposals to be considered for this competition, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1. Students must have defended their dissertation proposal between August 1, 2011, and August 1, 2012, but not yet defended their dissertation.
2. The expected completion date for students' dissertations should be on or before July 1, 2013.
3. No part of the dissertation or dissertation proposal may be accepted for publication, provisionally or otherwise, at an academic journal prior to submission for this competition.
We encourage all eligible doctoral students who are studying topics related to organization science to submit summaries of their dissertation proposals. Dissertation proposals addressing issues related to any aspect of organization theory, organizational behavior, strategy, business ethics, or entrepreneurship are welcome.
Submissions should meet the following formatting criteria:
1. Proposal summaries must be no longer than 15 double-spaced pages in 12-point Times font with 1-inch margins. Up to 7 additional pages containing references and exhibits may be included.
2. Because this is a dissertation proposal competition, empirical results should not appear in the dissertation proposal summary or appendices.
Dissertation proposals will be judged based on soundness of theory, methodological rigor, and contribution to the field of organization science. In keeping with the mission of the INFORMS College on Organization Science, boldness and innovation of the dissertation will be important criteria in the judging process.
The competition is being coordinated this year by Jared Harris of the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. We are fortunate to again be using Organization Science's ScholarOne Manuscripts submission system to manage dissertation proposal submissions and reviews. The web address for submissions is http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/orgsci. If you do not already have an account you will have to create one. This is a quick and easy process.
Applications must be received by July 16, 2012. Dissertation proposal summaries that do not meet the formatting criteria will be returned to students without review. In addition to the proposal summary, each application must include a nomination letter from the applicant's adviser certifying that the student is likely to complete the dissertation by July 1, 2013 and the date when the student advanced to candidacy – there is no need for a detailed recommendation letter.
Please follow Organization Science's instructions for submitting your proposal. A couple of important things to note:
• In step 1, select the manuscript type "Proposal."
• In step 2, Attributes, please select a few key words to aid in assigning reviewers.
• In step 4, Reviewers and Editors, do not recommend any reviewers. However, you should indicate Jared Harris as your preferred SENIOR EDITOR.
• In step 5, Details and Comments, paste your cover letter into the window and use the browse attachment function to attach your COVER PAGE as well as YOUR ADVISER'S NOMINATION LETTER.
• In step 6, Upload Files, upload a copy of your proposal WITHOUT ITS COVER PAGE OR OTHER IDENTIFYING INFORMATION. The first page should include only your dissertation title and abstract.
Please direct any inquiries to:

Apologies for cross-postings
Hello,
South Asian Journal of Global Business Research (SAJGBR) is accepting papers for its special issue on entrepreneurship. Abstracts (3 pages) should be submitted by Sept 10, 2012
Call for Papers-Special Issue of South Asian Journal of Global Business Research Entrepreneurship Inside (and Outside) the Classroom:
A South Asian Perspective
Entrepreneurship education is a powerful phenomenon in academic institutions and research outlets around the world (Fayolle, 2010; Neck & Greene, 2011; West, Gatewood, & Shaver, 2009). This interest has recently spilled over to South Asia[i], which is one of the world's most dynamic, fastest-growing and populous regions in the world (Bloom, 2012; Ghani, 2010; Khilji, 2012; World Bank, 2010). As a result, many new approaches are being implemented in South Asia to educate students about and engage them in entrepreneurship (Frederick, 2007; Muhammad, Akbar, &Dalziel, 2011). This special issue serves to inform the field of 'entrepreneurship education' by exploring it from institutional, structural, and individual perspectives within the South Asian context. We define entrepreneurship education as any knowledge-based activity designed to provide a learning or practical opportunity for students to engage with entrepreneurial behavior. Broadly speaking, the purpose of this special issue is to focus on entrepreneurship education in South Asia and inform entrepreneurship education practice, policy and research globally. More specifically, the purpose of this special issue is to highlight the practice of and strategies behind entrepreneurship education in South Asian universities, and the effectiveness of those practices and strategies.
Current, Western methods of teaching entrepreneurship are considered dated and not always economically or technologically feasible in the South Asian context (e.g., Neck & Greene, 2011). We thus solicit research that generates a comprehensive understanding of the domain of entrepreneurship education within the South Asia context by extending key debates and beginning new debates with provocative questions.
This special issue will benefit the field by addressing the following types of research questions. Theoretical and empirical (qualitative and quantitative, longitudinal, etc.) submissions, essays, interviews, and other contributions covering these or related research questions are welcome:
· What is the new paradigm of entrepreneurship education? How does it apply to South Asia?
· What economic and cultural factors influence the development and implementation of entrepreneurship education programs in South Asian universities?
· How can we effectively teach entrepreneurship, which focuses on the heroic figure, in collectivist South Asian economies?
· What perspectives (i.e., ethics, sustainability) should be integrated for developing a holistic approach to entrepreneurship education (in South Asia and globally)?
· Should entrepreneurship education programs lead the way in integrating issues concerning social and environmental stewardship into curriculum?
· Can passion for entrepreneurship be taught using a holistic pedagogy that integrates intellectual learning with physical and emotional/spiritual learning?
· What non-business disciplines should entrepreneurship educators collaborate with to produce practical and value-added educational experiences for students and future entrepreneurs?
· What are the transformative ways entrepreneur practitioners can be integrated into the classroom?
· How do we identify an entrepreneurship programs' impact, to understand the optimal composition of the program components to promote entrepreneurship in South Asia?
· Can we (if yes, how) develop entrepreneurship education programs that are transferable to indigenous entrepreneurial ecosystems across South Asia and other regions of the world?
Deadlines:
Abstracts (3 pages) should be submitted by Sept 10, 2012 to any one of the following guest editors. Abstracts will be reviewed by the editorial team, and selected authors would be invited to write a full paper.
Full Paper deadline (8000 words) via Scholar One to SAJGBR: Dec 15, 2012. These papers will be double blind reviewed before being accepted for publication.
Anticipated Publication Date: March 2014

Founded in 2002, TUM School of Management is the business school of Technische Universität München (TUM), one of the leading technical universities in the world (http://www.wi.tum.de/en/home/). The School has about 25 professors, including seven in Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Finance and Technology and Innovation Management. The business school ranks highly in recent academic and employer rankings, and several members of faculty featured prominently in the 2009 Handelsblatt ranking of German management professors, especially in the "young academics" (under 40 years of age) category. Due to its roots in the natural and engineering sciences, TUM features a distinct culture of technology-based entrepreneurship – its motto is "The entrepreneurial university" – and has very strong links to industry.
The School's research and teaching activities in Entrepreneurship and Innovation are supported by TUM's Center for Innovation and Business Creation (UnternehmerTUM), which features a strong team of more than 40 investment professionals and entrepreneurs who jointly collaborate with Faculty in education, funding, and development of startups and innovation commercialization (http://www.unternehmertum.de/index.html). The main campus of TUM School of Management is located in the heart of Munich, close to the business and cultural center of the city. Both world-class German companies, such as BMW, Allianz and Siemens, and global players (e.g. Microsoft, General Electric, and Intel) have a strong presence in the region, which is also proud of its strong entrepreneurial community - for example, a strong biotechnology cluster resides just outside the city limits.
