CALL FOR PAPERS
2014 Industry Studies Conference
http://www.industrystudies.org/
May 27-May 30, 2014
Portland, Oregon
We cordially invite submissions of individual papers and panels of papers for the 2014 Industry Studies Conference, to be held on May 27-May 30 in Portland, Oregon. The field of industry studies includes research on industries and non-profit activities as well as cross-industry analysis. It may also focus on the particular technologies, occupations, or subgroups within an industry or across industries. It draws on a wide range of academic disciplines and fields, including economics and other social sciences, management, operations research, engineering, labor markets and employment relations, and other related research and policy areas.
Industry studies research is grounded in observation of firms and workplaces and in a deep understanding of the markets, institutions, and technologies that shape the competitive environment. We welcome research of all disciplines that incorporates this approach. The Program Committee seeks papers and panels that would not typically be found in methodology-focused or single-discipline conferences, and is especially interested in attracting papers that are unique in their emphasis on observation and insight into a particular industry, or that consider how knowledge gained in studying one industry can provide insights into other industries.
The conference program will include organized panels and individual papers. We strongly encourage organized panel submissions as we would like to increase these types of panels on the program. In addition, the program will feature a pre-conference workshop for junior faculty, a plenary session, and an awards luncheon.
The 2014 meeting will also precede and overlap one day with the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) Annual meeting. Both associations will operate out of the same hotel in Portland. Like the Industry Studies Association, LERA shares the strong belief that context matters and that research should be grounded in a deep understanding of markets, institutions, and technologies. The Portland program will include a joint reception, joint plenary and parallel sessions on one day with LERA. LERA members who would like to submit to papers to ISA can be assured that every effort will be made to place you in panels on the joint day if your paper or panel is accepted. Sharing part of our meeting with LERA will allow ISA members to network with industry practitioners who attend LERA and learn about the variety of research from LERA members that includes topics on similar themes to ISA research. For more information on LERA see http://leraweb.org.
2014 Special Theme: Sustaining Sustainability in the Face of Increasing Risk
While the 2014 Industry Studies Annual Conference is open to all papers and panels relevant to industry studies (see below), we are particularly encouraging panels and presentations this year that look at issues surrounding sustainability within the industrial ecosystem. In the face of different types of uncertainties ranging from regulatory indecision and uncertainty, increasing competition, as well as financial and investment risks, industries have never been more challenged. We encourage contributions about how firms and industries remain profitable, flexible, and innovative in the face of global competition and different layers of uncertainties. Papers that target how industries have remained resilient and sustainable within their value chains, and offer innovative strategies for hedging risk are welcome.
Topics of interest relevant to this special theme include, but are not limited to:
- What are transaction cost considerations that come into play in the face of market uncertainties?
- What are the implications of incomplete information on the future direction of policies to promote innovative and sustainable industries?
- How do firms choose, from the set of feasible organizational alternatives, the arrangement that best mitigates contractual, market, and institutional hazards?
· What are the implications for employees of different organizational response strategies?
- What are the best response strategies to market risks and policy uncertainties, and how have these shaped organizational and industrial boundaries?
- As more firms and industries seek to mitigate recently experienced economic downturns, how have the synergies across geographical areas affected firm performance and industry competitiveness?
The Submission Process
Researchers may submit abstracts (of up to 250 words) for single papers. Accepted papers will be assigned to sessions by the Program Committee. In addition, we strongly encourage researchers to submit organized panels comprising multiple papers on a common theme (e.g., using one methodology across multiple industries, or multiple diverse approaches to a common problem in a single industry), particularly if it ties into the special theme for this year. We particularly encourage panels that include or are entirely composed of practitioners to bolster the relevance of the conference to industry. The deadline for abstract and panel submissions will be December 13, 2013. We also encourage submissions of full papers by junior (untenured) faculty to the Rising Star Best Paper Competition.
Please visit the conference website at www.industrystudies.pitt.edu/portland14 to make your submission. Decisions for papers and panels will be made by mid-February.
A number of research streams are listed below relevant to industry studies. However, these streams are not meant to be exhaustive, and the committee also welcomes submissions in the "General Industry Studies" category. This would include industry-specific as well as cross-industry papers and panels. The program committee may shift papers and panels from the general industry studies stream to other more specific streams where appropriate.
