    Announcements

    --------------------------------------------------------

Provalis Research is glad to announce the release of a free version of our QDA Miner qualitative coding tool. This free version is called QDA Miner Lite.

We removed from the full version of QDA Miner the advanced text retrieval tools (query-by-example, section retrieval, clustered coding, etc.), most of the analysis features (clustering, mds, crosstab, etc.) and several advanced code management features. However, we keep all the essential features for importing, coding, annotating documents and images and for retrieving coded segments. We also implemented a new file format for storing a whole project in a single file.

The result is, in our opinion, an easy-to-use CAQDAS tool ideal for those on tiny budgets (or with no budget) or those who wish to teach qualitative research in classes and are looking for something more intuitive and more powerful than existing freeware.

You can get more information about QDA Miner Lite from here:

Please note that this is the very first release of QDA Miner Lite. We may add additional features in the future.

    Technology & Innovation Management (TIM)

2013 TIM Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

Submissions due 15 January 2013This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) Division encourages interdisciplinary scholarship and dialogue on the management of innovation and technological change from a variety of perspectives, including strategic, managerial, behavioral, and operational issues.  To explore these many issues, the division seeks innovative proposals for its pre-conference Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) at the Academy of Management's annual meeting in Orlando, Florida in August 2013. PDW sessions will be held Friday and Saturday (August 9-10).

PDW sessions are attractive venues for exploring cutting edge issues since they can take a variety of formats (workshops, tutorials, debates, roundtable discussions, town hall meetings) and can address topics that may not fit in the regular program.  Central to each session should be the goal of engaging participants in a high level of interaction.

We seek proposals that are related to the conference theme, "Capitalism in Question," or explore emerging trends in research and practice of Technology and Innovation Management.  Acceptance of proposals will be based on (a) relevance to the interests of the Division's membership; (b) creativity; (c) potential to foster integration with the rest of the Academy (we welcome proposals that identify other Divisions and Interest Groups as co-sponsors; more than one co-sponsor can be suggested).  Our goal is to have a slate of PDWs that is as diverse, creative and interesting as our membership.

We encourage you to submit a proposal by using the PDW form available at the AOM submission site: http://submissions.aomonline.org/2013/. The submission deadline is January 15, 2013, 5:00pm EST.

Beyond cross-cultural management: Understanding, integrating and improving

Intercultural Engineering in an Interconnected World

    How to contribute:

Please email your ideas and comments or a short outline of your proposed contribution to: jasmin.mahadevan@pforzheim-university.de

Today's working spheres are interconnected through technology. Additionally, many individuals work across cultures and locations. We refer to these fields as intercultural engineering. With this term, we mean any intercultural professional, managerial or organizational field that is characterized by a high importance of technology and specialized knowledge of those working in this field. When speaking of intercultural engineering, we refer to all work contexts that integrate technology and specialized work practice across perceived borders of culture on micro-individual, meso-organizational or macro-societal level (see Mahadevan / Mayer 2012).

We argue that the field of intercultural engineering as defined above is currently underexplored in theory and practice due to two reasons. Firstly, cross-cultural management and intercultural communication theories tend to focus on the managerial context. Yet, intercultural competency is linked to contextualized professional skills. Hence, current intercultural theory and practice might not fit to the fields of intercultural engineering; additionally, intercultural / cross-cultural researchers and practitioners might lack the understanding of how cultural sense is made in technical fields. Secondly, many theories and practices of CCM learning are based on a pre-web understanding of intercultural interaction as being human-to-human interaction, e.g. through expatriation or actual physical moves across cultures. We, however, argue that humans and machines/systems are interconnected across the spaces of web 3.0. Based on supporting technology, intercultural collaboration has become complex and immediate. This involves human-to-human, human-to-machine and machine-to-machine interaction. We focus on human-to-machine and human-to-human interactions in these virtual spaces, thereby linking the cross-cultural to concepts such as the internet of things (IoT) or cyber-physical systems.

We argue that the fragmentation and compartmentalization of managerial thought and action along the demarcation line between technology/engineering and management/culture harms both fields: The technological experts do not have the theories and tools for enhanced and optimized processes of intercultural engineering. The intercultural experts lack the technological understanding of the fields in which actual intercultural engineering takes place. Consecutively, there are theories and best practice models for either engineering or the managerial sphere, but there is no best practice model for integrated intercultural engineering in an interconnected world.

In our symposium, we intend to conceptualize how culture, virtuality and technology intertwine and what that means for current cross-cultural / intercultural theory and practice. In doing so, we map the field of intercultural engineering in an interconnected world. By doing so, we intend to contribute to the development of intercultural theories and practice which fit to the technical fields of intercultural engineering and are meaningful to those working in them. We aim at bringing together experts of culture and technology to develop an integrated understanding of technological intercultural fields as intercultural engineering in an interconnected world.

    Workshop AIM
    3rd IT & Culture workshop
    Monday June 3rd, 2013 (Intentions 15 February 2013; Submissions 15 March 2013)
Paris Executive Campus Rouen Business School

    Social Networking Sites (SNS):
    Issues and Perspectives

How do cultures influence the use of social networking sites at the individual and/or group level?
What are the effects of such use on organizations?

    Guest Speakers :

Pr. Francis Jaureguiberry, Université de Pau

Pr. Moez Limayem, South Florida University

In partnership with the Association Information and Management (AIM), the MPW (Managing in a Pluricultural World) research group of Rouen Business School is organizing a workshop on SNS in its Parisian campus. This research event is opened to practitioners, researchers and teachers in all areas of management science. We believe that since Information Systems (IS) transcend the organization and affect all of its functions and aspects, it is totally appropriate to gather researchers from different fields in management who are sometimes investigating the same phenomenon while using different grids of analysis. The purpose of this third edition of the IT and Culture workshop is to bring together researchers from several disciplines to allow them to share their respective works on social media and cultures (national culture, professional culture, religious culture, IT culture, etc.).

    Positioning

SNS, these social online platforms which are used by millions of people, started to grow in our private, personal sphere; it then gradually invaded our professional sphere. In a globalized world where knowledge and information have become a valuable currency, these websites are playing an increasingly important role in the social landscape and involve a true cultural revolution.

SNS provide to their users access to non-redundant information and new contacts, through weak ties (Granovetter, 1973). They allow people to develop virtual relationships with the members of an online community (Boyd and Ellison, 2007; Rosen, 2007; Donath, 2007; Zhao et al., 2008). They also have an impact at the macro level of analysis; for instance, they have been recognized as having played a significant role in the Arab world's surge toward democracy (Maghrabi and Salam, 2001; Mlaïki, 2011). People and organizations must now manage their digital identity and increase their visibility through the web; they can do so through SNS (Cardon, 2008, George, 2009, Zhao et al., 2008) as they allow interpersonal (one to one) and also collective (communities of practice, working groups, friends) communication. Jauréguiberry and Proulx (2011) insist on the utilitarian dimension of SNS as they fulfill instrumental networking needs: they allow users to introduce themselves by only showing their best assets, as the purpose is to obtain valorizing recognition by other users. Voluntary usage discontinuance (Jauréguiberry, 2012) by some users, however, remains understudied. It may be an answer to information overload and to the need to master communication flows.

SNS may soon be considered as essential as means and support for knowledge management and knowledge diffusion in organizations (Boughzala and Limayem, 2009). Researchers have investigated the role of these platforms for promoting firms, their homebrand and their values (Poynter, 2004; Brown et al., 2007, Page, 2008; Langheinrich and Karjith, 2010, Girard et al., 2011). The capacity of these platforms for information dissemination allows firms to propose a new kind of marketing through the emergence of a new form of word of mouth ("e-word of mouth") (Trusov et al., 2009; Gregurec et al., 2009, Cao et al., 2009). Marketing professionals are developing new methods of communication (affinity-based marketing, viral marketing, geo-marketing, social gaming, social shopping, etc.) in order to create and to reinforce their relationships with customers.

SNS may also be considered as having some negative aspects such as the information overload they can be perceived as generating (Mlaiki et al., 2011) since they reinforce the "napoleon effect" (Kalika, 2007; Kalika et al., 2007): managers have to deal with an ever increasing number of communication media. We believe that some cultural aspects (IT culture, organizational culture, etc.) can lead individuals to better manage this information overload or learn to keep it under control. Another potential danger should also be reported here. The possibility of a complete disconnection from the real world by creating one's own virtual life is a real concern for some users. These users may develop an addictive behavior and suffer from self-regulation problems (Rouis, Limayem and Sangari, 2011b, Soror, and Steelman Limayem, 2012) related to excessive use.

These elements raise many questions: what is the effectiveness of SNS in the field of marketing, human resource management, etc.? How can we deal with the legal issues related to these websites? What about one's e-reputation? How can we adapt the use of these platforms to different cultural contexts in terms of marketing, this issue being more particularly acute in the case of multinational firms? How should we manage cultural (national, IT, corporate, generational, etc.) differences amongst users?

We are more particularly interested in the following issues:

    - What roles do SNS play in the world (depending on different national cultures)?

    - What is the impact of SNS on the construction of a transnational culture?

    - Are these websites used in the same way (and for the same purposes) all over the world?

    - Do organizations adapt their online discourse according to their audience's culture (national, IT, etc.)?

    - Do organizations adopt these websites in the same way while using them to communicate within and without the organization (communication strategy, corporate culture, etc.)?

    - Do all individuals perceive SNS in the same manner and use them for the same reasons (individual culture and IT culture: Walsh, Kefi and Baskerville, 2010)?

    - Could one foresee SNS usage discontinuance?

    - How can one manage the information overload linked to SNS?

Some researchers have already investigated the impact of some cultural differences on SNS use (Vasalou et al., 2010, Kim et al., 2011, Chen and Tsoi, 2011, Yoo and Huang, 2011; Rouis, Limayem and Sangari, 2011a). Nevertheless, much remains to be done to investigate fully the linkages between users' cultural differences and different possible usages of these platforms.

We propose, below, a list of themes that are coherent with our workshop topic. Of course, it is not an exhaustive list. Researchers should feel free to propose any work that somehow links SNS to culture.

    Suggested topics:

    1. IT culture and SNS

    2. National culture and SNS: usage and motivations

    3. SNS as spaces to exchange and communicate with people from different cultures

    4. SNS and consumption: a matter of culture?

    5. SNS and e-commerce (e-marketing)

    6. SNS and cultural industry (music industry, theater, arts, etc.).

    7. SNS and self-promotion

    8. SNS as a facilitator of political expression (freedom of expression)

    9. SNS and e-identity

    10. SNS and information overload: is the "Napoleon cake" getting thicker?

    11. SNS and the development of social ties

    12. SNS and co-creation of value

    13. Collective decision-making: Wisdom of crowds, crowd-sourcing

    14. SNS and political expression: a cultural issue?

    Description

For most of its existence ACAC has preceded the main ACAC conference with a Research Development Workshop.  This workshop has been designed to help authors of research papers take their manuscript the final leg to a successful publication.

In 2012 the National Science Foundation became a co-sponsor of the ACAC Research Development Workshop.  The workshop was expanded and sessions designed to address challenges for PhD students transitioning to academic positions and establishing their research networks were added to the program.  Please see the 2012 ACAC program for details on last year's Research Development Workshop.

    http://robinson.gsu.edu/resources2/files/acac/acac_program2012.pdf

With the support of NSF, the ACAC PhD Research Development Workshop was able to underwrite all food and lodging costs for participants in the workshop.  In addition, these students were granted registration fee waivers and given food and lodging support for their attendance at the main ACAC conference, which immediately follows the Research Development Workshop at the same locations.

Due to the budget uncertainty in Washington DC it is not surprising that at this time we are unsure of continued NSF support this coming year's Research Development Workshop.  However, the organizing committee of ACAC is committed to continuing the workshop in its expanded format.  Please read carefully the alternative levels of support students will receive pending NSF's continuing support.

The Research Development Workshop is open to PhD student doing research related to competitive advantage with emphasis given to research focusing on technology strategy, search and learning in organizations, knowledge management, strategic entrepreneurship and dynamic capabilities.  Submitted research papers should be targeted to top academic journals in the student's relevant field.  Papers may be taken from the student's dissertation work but dissertations are not to be submitted.

Papers submission guidelines are the same as those for the main ACAC conference and will be found after early December 2012 at http://robinson.gsu.edu/acac/

The National Science Foundation and ACAC strongly encourage submission of papers in the above listed areas by women and members of groups underrepresented in the sciences.

    ACAC Mission

Addressing Some of the "Big Picture" Strategy Questions

    - Where do competitive & distinctive advantages come from, and how are they sustained?

    - Why do some companies consistently outperform their competitors?

    - Why do some businesses succeed in the same industry environments where others fail?

     - And what, if anything, can managers and entrepreneurs actually do about it?

    - What are the unique challenges of building and sustaining competitive advantage in special contexts like new ventures and international business?

The aim of this annual conference is to improve our ability to answer these "big picture" questions and other related questions of corporate strategy, entrepreneurial strategy, and international strategy, by bringing together some of the world's top researchers on competitive advantage for three days each year in Atlanta.

    We expect to:

    - Share cutting-edge research, ideas, and theories.

    - Foster collaborative research efforts.

    - Build a worldwide association and network of researchers who are dedicated to advancing the state of knowledge about competitive advantage.

The conference organizers invite the submission of unpublished working papers that advance the state of knowledge about competitive advantage addressing the "big picture" questions posed above.

We are especially interested in increasing the number of submissions that address research questions about competitive advantage in the special contexts of entrepreneurship and international business.

    Registration and Submission Details

Conference registration fee for up to two authors of accepted papers is $100.  This fee will include all lunches Tuesday through Thursday, the Tuesday evening welcome Reception and Georgia Tech dinner at the Buckhead Club, the Wednesday evening reception, all coffee and refreshment breaks throughout the conference, and deeply discounted hotel rates at the Buckhead InterContinental, including free Internet and daily buffet breakfast, while room supplies last.

For those for whom the Conference Registration Fee is not waived, the Conference Registration Fee is $290.  This fee will include all lunches Tuesday through Thursday, the Tuesday evening welcome Reception and Georgia Tech dinner at the Buckhead Club, the Wednesday evening reception and all coffee and refreshment breaks throughout the conference.

Submitted papers will undergo a selection process, NOT a formal review process – so we will not provide reviews or other feedback on submitted manuscripts.

Submitting a paper represents a commitment that at least one of the authors will attend and participate in the paper session.  Paper sessions will be scheduled based on the overall flow and content of the conference to maximize participant value.  Authors who commit to attend and participate but then fail to do so, for any reason other than an immediate, genuine emergency, may be excluded from participation in future ACAC meetings.

In addition to regular paper-presentation sessions, authors may also choose to allow their submitted papers to be considered for an alternative session format.  A small percentage of papers will be selected for high-profile visual presentation session, similar to a "SMS-style" poster session, held during the Wednesday reception.  This alternative will be available for selection during the paper submission process.

Papers must be submitted via the ACAC 2013 submission system using the paper submission link at http://robinson.gsu.edu/acac/  This link will be live on January 7th, 2013.

Submitters will be asked to first provide the manuscript information and author information. The submission system will then provide step-by-step instructions on how to proceed with the final submission of the manuscript.

Papers must be submitted either in Microsoft Word or in PDF format.

The DEADLINE for submissions is Monday February 18, 2013.

The National Science Foundation and ACAC strongly encourage submission of papers by women and members of groups underrepresented in the sciences.

     PhD Student Research Development Workshop

This year a separate Call is being issued for the pre-conference PhD student Research Development Workshop.  Again this year we are seeking support from NSF.  Due to fiscal concerns in Washington DC we do not expect to have approval from the National Science Foundation shortly, but we are going ahead as last we did last year with the PhD program.  Please see the PhD Research development Workshop Call for full details.

Detailed Information about the Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference will be available online at by early December:

    Dear All,

    Apologies for cross-postings.

We would like to bring to your attention a call for papers for the EURAM 2013 conference:

BRIDGING ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP: NEW RESEARCH DIRECTIONS

Joint track between the Entrepreneurship SIG and the Organisational Behaviour SIG

Key dates of EURAM 2013 Conference (26th-29th June)

Deadline for paper submission: 15th January 2013 2pm CET

    Abstract:

The questions of what motivates entrepreneurs, how entrepreneurs make decisions and how they manage other members of entrepreneurial teams are of considerable interest to both entrepreneurship and organizational behavior scholars. Yet, the fields of entrepreneurship and organizational behavior have developed in isolation. In the entrepreneurship field, researchers have traditionally examined entrepreneurs' behavior at all levels of analysis - individual, group and organizational, and their interaction with key stakeholders in the process of creating new ventures.

Nevertheless, it is only relatively recently that scholars have started to investigate the role of Organizational Behavior (OB) in the entrepreneurial process (Baron, 2002). In particular, extant research has shown how affect, trust, identity, team dynamics, leadership, temporal attitudes and human capital among others influence entrepreneurial issues and the performance of new ventures (e.g., Baron, 2008; Cardon, Wincent, Singh & Drnovsek, 2009). Not surprisingly, this recently emerging literature, which sheds new light on entrepreneurial cognitive and behavioral processes, draws heavily upon research on emotions and organizational behavior, the integration of which has been increasing (Ashkanasy, Härtel & Zerbe, 2000).

Despite the progress achieved, a more explicit focus on the micro-foundations of entrepreneurship offers opportunities to gain new insight into individual motivations to engage in entrepreneurial actions, while coping with significant risk and uncertainty. The aim of this track is to create a thought platform that addresses such behavioral issues.

This track welcomes high-quality empirical and conceptual contributions that are relevant to the general area of identity construction and negotiation, emotion dynamics, power, team dynamics and the micro-foundations of new entities in the broad entrepreneurial context (start-ups, family business, and established organizations). We encourage studies with novel theoretical underpinnings that use different research methods-quantitative, qualitative, narratives, and multilevel methods-and examine the intersection of the entrepreneurship and OB literatures across different cultural contexts.

Submissions with HR implications will also be considered for a special section of the journal Human Resource Management.

    Job Positions and Research Proposals

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Dear fellow TIM colleagues

One of my Ph.D. students is proposing to work on Big Data and its applications in business. The research will be primarily India centric but since Big Data is still nascent in Indian companies he will need inputs from international organizations. My Institute has a policy of forming a Thesis Advisory Committee which will include me and another colleague from outside my Institute who would advise this student. Would anyone with this experience and perspective like to join the Thesis Advisory Committee of this student? The responsibility would be to attend the TAC meetings (about twice in an year and which could be done through Skype) and provide useful suggestions and inputs to the student which he could use in his research. It will be rewarding for many of you outside India to get to know about India and Indian IT.

So do let me know at the earliest.

    Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship

    SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises

The Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises at Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management is home to one of the world's leading group of researchers, focused on advancing scholarship in the field of entrepreneurship. We are now looking to further strengthen our research and invite applications from Ph.D. candidates, for FALL 2013 admission.

Application deadline is January 15th for admission in the following Fall semester (August 15th)

The Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises is one of only a handful of academic departments exclusively devoted to entrepreneurship, and also one of the few departments in the U.S. to offer a doctoral degree in entrepreneurship. Accepted applicants to the program will have the opportunity to study under the supervision of a group of world leading scholars that includes: Alejandro Amezcua, Denis Gregoire, Mike Haynie, Tom Lumpkin, Alex McKelvie, Maria Minniti, Minet Schindehutte and Johan Wiklund. Based on an annual survey of research productivity in the field of entrepreneurship published by TCU, this team was responsible for Syracuse University being ranked #2 in the world for published research in entrepreneurship the two past years (2010 and 2011).

The aim of our doctoral program is to provide candidates with a deep knowledge of the field of entrepreneurship, and the technical skills necessary to design and execute rigorous studies of the quality to be published in the leading entrepreneurship journals. We expect accepted candidates to complete their study within four years of admission to the program, and pursue careers at top Ph.D. granting academic institutions in the U.S. and abroad. During your time as a doctoral candidate at EEE you can expect:

    • Waiver of all tuition fees during the four years of the program

    • A competitive annual stipend to cover your living expenses

    • A research education tailored for a future entrepreneurship scholar

    • The opportunity to do research together with the internationally renowned scholars of the department

    • Competent and dedicated guidance from those scholars

    • Experience as a university teacher in our nationally ranked entrepreneurship undergraduate program

A doctoral degree in entrepreneurship from Syracuse University offers you a whole host of opportunities for the future, either in academic positions around the world, or in other positions where your research skill is demanded. The job market for entrepreneurship scholars is strong and in recent years more positions have been available than candidates pursuing jobs. Thus, it is not surprising that the position of a university professor is frequently ranked as one of the most desirable jobs in the world.

Application deadline is January 15th for admission in the following Fall semester (August 15th). All relevant information, including the application package is online at http://whitman.syr.edu/PhD/. World-class faculty

We pride ourselves in our faculty, with recognized authorities in areas such work-family issues, franchising, organizational citizenship behavior, strategic alliances, employee well-being, and dynamic capabilities, all of whom maintain active research streams that involve our students.  Our faculty members are also highly visible in the field, with two former associate editors of the Academy of Management Journal, a former editor of the Journal of Management, the incoming editor of the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and representation on the editorial boards of top management journals.  We recently expanded our faculty dramatically with the goal of further raising the profile of the department and Ph.D. program.

The attention you need to succeed

We have an intentionally small program in order to foster faculty and student interaction. You will work closely with faculty from the moment you arrive on campus (and sometimes before!) to produce research for publication in high-quality journals.  As a result, our students have published in the top journals in the field, frequently presented at conferences, and have won numerous awards for their research.
