Provalis Research is glad to announce the release of a free version of our QDA Miner qualitative coding tool. This free version is called QDA Miner Lite.
We removed from the full version of QDA Miner the advanced text retrieval tools (query-by-example, section retrieval, clustered coding, etc.), most of the analysis features (clustering, mds, crosstab, etc.) and several advanced code management features. However, we keep all the essential features for importing, coding, annotating documents and images and for retrieving coded segments. We also implemented a new file format for storing a whole project in a single file.
The result is, in our opinion, an easy-to-use CAQDAS tool ideal for those on tiny budgets (or with no budget) or those who wish to teach qualitative research in classes and are looking for something more intuitive and more powerful than existing freeware.
You can get more information about QDA Miner Lite from here:
http://provalisresearch.com/products/qualitative-data-analysis-
software/freeware
Please note that this is the very first release of QDA Miner Lite. We may add additional features in the future.

Apologies for the cross-postings
Greetings Colleagues,
I hope this e-mail finds you well. My co-author and I are currently seeking contributions for a symposium concerning Understudied Common Moderators in Meta-Analysis [for AOM 2013, submissions due 15 January].
The current goal of the session is to spark a discussion concerning seldom deliberated, interesting moderators in meta-analysis. For instance, we often dichotomize studies into either lab or field samples, but what happens when you apply theory to sample type and break down that distinction even more?
We see some interesting results!
If you think you may be interested in contributing to the symposium for the 2013 AOM conference in Orlando, FL – please contact me at ChrisWWiese@gmail.com. The submission deadline for this conference is January 15.
Thanks for reading this e-mail and I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,

THEME OF THE CONFERENCE
With continued globalization of the markets, more and more firms from around the world, even small- and medium-sized firms, are venturing into the global markets to seek opportunities to grow and make profits. Given the complexity and dynamism of the global markets, it is increasingly important for firms large and small to be innovative, risk-taking, and adaptive in order to succeed in international business. Thus, entrepreneurship is playing a vital role in firm's internationalization process and international business.
Yet, research in entrepreneurship and international business has run separate paths in the current literature. Scholars in entrepreneurship see entrepreneurship as important drivers of economic and social progress, and entrepreneurial firms as important sources of innovation, employment and productivity growth. They have focused on examining the key characteristics of entrepreneurial firms and their effect on the firms' growth and success, as well as conditions conducive to developing entrepreneurial characteristics. In contrast, scholars in international business pay interest in examining cross-border business activities such as foreign direct investment (FDI), foreign portfolio investment (FPI), cross-border collaboration, international marketing, and theory of multinational enterprises, among others. Only scant research attention has been paid to inter-disciplinary issues such as what role entrepreneurship plays in international business.
In the context of globalization, some new entrepreneurial phenomena are emerging that call for rigorous academic research to develop theories to explain them. For example, key entrepreneurial opportunities may well exist in international business and in the global market, as evidenced by the fact that the born-global entrepreneurial firms have experienced rapid growth in the last decades. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more inter-disciplinary research that span across the domains of entrepreneurship and international business.
To promote such inter-disciplinary research endeavor, Nankai Business School is collaborating with Advances in International Marketing to organize an international conference focused on entrepreneurship and international business. We welcome scholars to submit manuscripts, work-in-process, and research proposals that address interdisciplinary issues related to entrepreneurship and international business. The conference should be a great opportunity for scholars to share their research work, receive feedback on their research, explore possible collaboration with other scholars, and possibly get their manuscript published in a special volume of Advances in International Marketing.
PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITY
Papers accepted by and presented at the conference will be considered for publication in a special volume (volume 25) of Advances in International Marketing in spring 2014.
Advances in International Marketing (AIM) is a premier outlet for international business and international marketing research published by the Emerald Group Publishing Limited in the United Kingdom. In a 2000 article inJournal of International Business Studies (JIBS), AIM was ranked at #8 among 30 international business journals based on SSCI citations.
TOPICS OF PAPERS
We invite theoretical and empirical papers covering a wide variety of topics related to entrepreneurship and international business. The following is a list of suggested topics that are welcome. But we also welcome papers that address other issues related to entrepreneurship and international business.
The nature of entrepreneurial opportunity in global context
Comparison of entrepreneurs with local and global reach
International entrepreneurship and new venture internationalization
Born global firms, their characteristics, strategy, and performance in global markets
The origin, process and outcome of transnational entrepreneurship
Cultural conflicts and the management of entrepreneurial teams
The effect of entrepreneurship on multinational enterprise's performance in new product development, customer relationship management, and supply chain management.
Cross-cultural comparison of entrepreneurial propensity
The relationship between entrepreneurial propensity and multinational enterprises' development of dynamic capabilities
New venture strategy in global context
Resource allocation in global context
Social entrepreneurship in international business

INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY –I4S
We offer a position as Research Associate (100%) and PhD Student in Germany
The EU Project
I4S is a project funded by the European Union in support of its strategic commitment to 'smart, sustainable and inclusive growth'. Under the leadership of The Academy of Business in Society (EABIS), eight leading universities' and their corporate partners collaborate to study sustainability-driven innovation (SDI) – which is understood as innovation not only directed at economic gains but also at positive ecological and social effects. Preliminary research and prospective studies suggest that SDI involves Management competencies and organisational capabilities rarely found in traditional business-led, technology-driven innovation. The project's primary aim is thus to research how companies manage the transformation of business processes and business models related to SDI as a multi-actor process. These Management practices will be studied by individual researchers embedded with associated partners engaged in SDI. The I4S Project is funded by the EU's 7th Framework Programme (subject to awarding of the EU) under the "Marie Curie action: Initial Training Networks" schmee aimed at both increasing attractiveness of research careers for early stage researchers and adding to their employability through exposure to both academia and enterprises. The research program is accompanied by network training events and site visits at various partner locations during the whole Project, allowing to develop more generic knowledge about the barriers and obstacles to innovation across sectors.
Your task
As representative of one of the eight universities, you are responsible for managing and conducting the local research task in Germany under supervision of the Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM), in a research collaboration with Prof. Dr. Stefan Schaltegger and Dr. Eirk Hansen, and in close practice collaboration with the partner company SIEB & MEYER AG, an innovation leaders supplying the renewable energy technology industry. Your major task will be to enable, support and analyse a sustainability-driven innovation process in the partner company with the doublé aim of advancing knowledge and transforming practice. While innovation is often focused on incremental prodess and product innovations, in this Project the aim is to explore more radical innovation options by tapping into "future markets" with significant sustainability potential. One potential market to explore will be small-scale wind turbines.
The Project builds on the expectations that SDI can only successfully be advanced through multi-actor processes. You will be responsible for designing and facilitating a collaborative innovation process involving not only internal stakeholders (e.g. management, R&D) but also important external players (e.g. customers, technology and environmental experts; professional associations, NGOs). Through methods such as business Development workshops, design thinking, participate product Development and other creativity tools – and with the support of third-party facilitators – you will co-explore future trajectories and Management approaches towards sustainability. Also part of the Project is the regular participation in and contribution to international network meetings at various research institutions involved in the Project. You present your research at international conferences worldwide.
Your host research institute
The Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM) is a leading research, teaching and transfer institution in the context of sustainability Management and has roughly 30 employees. A large set of research projects on global, European and national levels are pursued by interdisciplinary teams of researchers with backgrounds in Management, economics, cultural studies, and environmental sciences, amongst others. Rooted in its long history and interdisciplinary team, the researchers and thus provides optmaal conditions for pursuing a PhD. CSM also has a long track record with the first MBA programme focused on sustainability Management.
The institute is part of the Faculty of Sustainability Sciences at Leuphana University Luneburg which has been on an ambitious and widely recognised transformation process into a sustainable university for many years. Luneburg is located in Northern Germany, a small city famous for its historic, medieval architecture and beautiful countryside and recognised for its high living quality. With a 30min distance by public transportation. Luneburg also benefits from the vibrant city of Hamburg, which is not only the 2nd largest but also one of the most exciting cities in Germany.
Your best company
SIEB & MEYER (http://www.sieb-meyer.de), founded in 1962, is an internationally successful company with 220 employees. Its headquarters are located in Luneburg with subsidiaries in China and Taiwan. The electric-engineering company offers components with as CNC systems, drive controls and frequency converts applicable in various industries; another key offering is feed-in technology covering products for controlling dynamic electricity product as specifically required in renewable energy systems. Part of the Project is a 6 month secondment in the company. Throughout the entire Project you will be closely collaboration with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) who is at the same time member of the board of directors.
Formal requirements and conditions
The EU funding scheme of the Initial Training Network intends to enable mobility in Europe; thus, applicants must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (e.g., work, studies ), in Germany for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to recruitment. Due to the specificity of the research task the applicant requires good conversational skills in German and English. In case these latter requirements cannot be fulfilled, you may consider one of the related positions in the Project at our partner universities abroad (see htty://www.eabis.org/proejcts/Project-detail-view.html?uid=42). The applicant must not have more than four years of research experience after his/her most recent degree ('Early-Stage Researcher').
The job offering encompasses a position as a fulltime (100%) research associate. The Project runtime is three years. You will be employed by Leuphana University Luneburg and remunerated according to EU standards of the Marie Curie Program including a 'living allowance 'and a 'mobility allowance' (amount depending on family status). Subject to prior awarding of the EU the position is intended to start between 1 February and 15 May, 2013.
The position is also linked to the pursuit of a PhD degree. A master's or comparable degree in a relevant field (e.g. Management, technology Management, environmental/sustainability studies) is required. Leuphana University offers a semi-structured PhD program involving various lectures and seminars on research methods and theories, which is scheduled for the first year. The actual PhD thesis is cumulative, i.e. based ont he research projec tyou are expected to publish a set of Journal articls in internationally recognised academic journals, some of which will be produced in collaboration with researchers at the CSM. 2 PhD positions & 1 Postdoctoral researcher 'High-Risk Politics' f/m |
For each 1.0 fte |
PhD position 1: vacancy number: 1.2012.00328
PhD position 2: vacancy number: 1.2012.00329
Postdoctoral researcher: vacancy number: 1.2012.00330
Why do politicians start wars, why do they cut public pensions, and why do political parties' change their ideological focus? In more general terms, why do political actors change the electorally safe status quo with policies of which the outcome is unknown and which may lead to a loss of votes and/or office? The project HIGH-RISK POLITICS: Explaining and improving political actors' decision-making on electorally risky issues – sponsored by a major NWO VIDI research grant rewarded to dr. Barbara Vis – develops and tests a theory of political decision-making under risk that holds on the individual level, the meso level (parties), and the macro level (governments). The starting point for this new theory will come from prospect theory, a psychological theory that predicts that people take risk-averse decisions when facing gains while they are risk-seeking when confronting losses. The project is unique in applying a behavioral theory on different subfields of political science, thereby integrating and expanding existing approaches. A total of three researchers will be recruited to work on this project: two PhD students (1.0 fte each) and one postdoctoral researcher (1.0 fte). Each of the researchers addresses one of the three project objectives (macro, meso or micro). |
Tasks
PhD position 1 will work on the macro part of the project. S/he will assess empirically why some governments take electorally risky decisions in the areas of welfare state reform and military intervention while others do not. While insights from prospect theory form the starting point for the theoretical model to be developed and tested, PhD 1 will further develop the full theoretical model for this sub-project (in collaboration with the project leader). PhD 1 will conduct both quantitative analyses and configurational comparative analysis. For this position, knowledge of theories of military intervention and their empirical application is a key requirement.
PhD position 2 will work on the meso part of the project. S/he will examine why some political parties risk alienating their constituents by changing their policy position on salient topics (welfare state issues and international security), but other parties do not. Also for this sub-project insights from prospect theory are the starting point for the theoretical model to be developed and tested, with PhD 2 further developing the full theoretical model (in collaboration with the project leader). In terms of methodological approach, PhD student 2 will conduct quantitative analyses – especially pooled time-series analysis – in addition to configurational comparative analysis. Strong quantitative methodological skills, especially experience with regression analysis, are a necessary requirement for this position.
Both PhD students will receive intensive supervision and take part in the courses and other activities of the Graduate School for the Social Sciences of VU University Amsterdam. In addition, the PhD students may be enrolled in the Dutch/Flemish research school for Public Administration and Political Science (NIG) and can receive additional training at for instance summer schools. Both PhD students will be coached in getting their work published in academic journals and books, among other things by co-authoring with the project leader. The PhD students also have a limited teaching task (0.1 fte). The PhD students will also participate in the relevant national and international research networks and participate in academic conferences.
The postdoctoral researcher will concentrate on the micro part of the project. Existing models of decision-making in political science typically assume that a politician is a Homo Economicus or a so-called Econ. But is this true? Experimental evidence finds that "normal" individuals are so-called Humans instead, who use decision-making heuristics and display biases. The empirical evidence from applications of prospect theory in political science suggests that politicians might also be Humans rather than Econs. Still, there is no experimental evidence that prospect theory holds, or fails to hold, for politicians. A related question is whether prospect theory – developed based on experiments with individuals – also holds on the level of collective decision-making. The available experimental evidence on this is scant and conflicting, while analyses of group decision-making by politicians in a controlled, experimental setting are lacking altogether.
By means of experiments, the postdoc will answer these related questions by testing to what extent (groups of) politicians are Humans in that they display the same attitude towards risk as "normal" individuals do. The results of these experiments will help develop the micro-part of the theory of political decision-making under risk, a task in which the postdoc will be actively involved. Moreover, s/he will participate in the relevant national and international research networks and participate in academic conferences.
Candidates need to indicate their preference for one of the three positions.
