2013 PITM Student Paper Competition
The POMS Product Innovation and Technology Management College (PITM) invites submissions to the 2013 Student Paper Competition. The award will be accompanied by an honorarium. The winner will be announced at the PITM Mini-conference scheduled for October 5, 2013 – immediately preceding the 2013 INFORMS Annual Meeting in Minneapolis.
Student Paper Competition -- Application Process and Eligibility Conditions
We welcome papers related to product development and technology management. There are four conditions for eligibility:
1. Entrant must have been a student on or after May 1, 2012, and the research presented in the paper must have been conducted while the entrant was a student.
2. The submitted paper must present original research conducted primarily by the student entrant. Some assistance by other individuals (such as the student's faculty advisor) is permitted, however. If the paper were to be submitted for publication to a journal, it would be appropriate to list the student entrant as its first author, regardless of alphabetical order. If the paper or a close version of it has already been submitted for publication to a journal, the student entrant must have been listed as its first author, and it would have been appropriate to do so regardless of alphabetical order.
3. The entrant's primary research advisor must certify that the student's share of contribution to the paper along the three individual dimensions of writing, analytical results (if applicable), computational results (if applicable) and/or empirical/experimental results (if applicable) exceeds 50%.
4. Entrant must be a member of the PITM College of POMS on the date of submission (visit the POMS Website for information on how to become a POMS/PITM member).
In addition, a student may submit no more than one paper to the competition.
Submission Requirements:
A complete entry consists of:
1. A cover letter completed by the student and stating the entrant's contact information, the contact information of the entrant's primary research advisor, the paper title, and appropriate keywords for the submitted paper.
2. The paper in completely anonymous form and PDF file format, with a length of at most 32 pages, including all references, tables, graphs and appendices 12-point font with 1-inch margins on all four sides. Papers should have double-spacing throughout, including abstract, references, and footnotes and be strictly compliant with all submission formatting standards of the journal POM as described at http://www.poms.org/journal/author_instructions/ . The paper must include all material necessary for judges to assess its technical correctness, possibly included in an appendix of no more than 8 pages. The file name should be the short title of the paper.
3. A cover letter completed by the primary research advisor of the entrant and including a statement that the eligibility requirements listed above have been met as well as an assessment of the student's individual contribution to the paper along various dimensions (e.g. problem definition, modeling, analytical results, computational results, empirical/experimental results, writing). This information will be considered when evaluating the paper.
Items 1 and 2 should be sent by the entrant as e-mail attachments to the VP Honors and Awards of PITM, Sebastian Fixson (sfixson@babson.edu). Item 3 should also be sent via e-mail to the VP Honors and Awards, but directly by the entrant's primary research advisor (who should not forget to include the title of the paper as identification).
Complete entries must be received on or before July 1, 2013. Any question(s) related to the competition should be sent by email to the VP Honors and Awards.
Good Luck!

Special Issue: South Asian Journal of Global Business Research (SAJGBR)
Entrepreneurship is a powerful economic and social phenomenon exploding around the world, although its impact in emerging economies is still being investigated. This interest has recently spilled over to South Asia[i], which is one of the world's most dynamic, fastest-growing and populous regions in the world (Bloom, 2012; Ghani, 2010; Khilji, 2012; World Bank, 2010). As a result, many new approaches are being implemented in South Asia to educate students about and engage them in entrepreneurship (Frederick, 2007; Muhammad, Akbar, &Dalziel, 2011). This special issue serves to inform the field of entrepreneurship by exploring the entrepreneurial process from institutional, structural, and individual perspectives within the South Asian context. Broadly speaking, the purpose of this special issue is to focus on entrepreneurship in South Asia and inform entrepreneurship practice, policy and research globally. More specifically, the purposes of this special issue are to highlight the practice of and strategies behind entrepreneurship in South Asian countries, and the effectiveness of those practices and strategies.
Current, Western methods and beliefs of entrepreneurship are considered dated and not always economically or technologically feasible in the South Asian context. We thus solicit research that generates a comprehensive understanding of the domain of entrepreneurship within the South Asia context by extending key debates and beginning new debates with provocative questions.
This special issue will benefit the field by addressing the following types of research questions. Theoretical and empirical (qualitative and quantitative, longitudinal, etc.) submissions, essays, interviews, and other contributions covering these or related research questions are welcome:
· What are the new paradigms of entrepreneurship? How does it apply to South Asia?
· What economic and cultural factors influence entrepreneurship in South Asian cultures?
· How can we effectively teach and practice entrepreneurship, which focuses on the heroic figure, in collectivist South Asian economies?
· How should emerging economies balance state and private capital in supporting entrepreneurial activity?
· What perspectives (i.e., ethics, sustainability) should be integrated for developing a holistic approach to entrepreneurship education (in South Asia and globally)?
· How can entrepreneurship reduce poverty in emerging economies?
· What are the transformative ways entrepreneurs can be integrated into the classroom?
· How do we identify an entrepreneurship program's impact, to understand the optimal composition of the program components to promote entrepreneurship in South Asia?
· Can we (if yes, how) develop entrepreneurship models that are transferable to indigenous entrepreneurial ecosystems across South Asia and other regions of the world?
· What is the impact of institutional deficiencies (i.e., government corruption) on entrepreneurship in emerging economies?
Deadlines:
Abstracts (3 pages) should be submitted by July 15, 2013 to any one of the following guest editors. Abstracts will be reviewed by the editorial team, and selected authors would be invited to write a full paper.
Full Paper deadline (8000 words) via Scholar One to SAJGBR: October 15, 2013. These papers will be double blind reviewed before being accepted for publication.
Anticipated Publication Date: January, 2015

Reminder: CfP - Perspectives on Human Capital and Human Assets-Due May 15, Extended to 4 June
The effective employment and deployment of intellectual capital and human assets in organizations is widely recognized as a critical characteristic of successful economies and organizations. Their abilities to respond to changing environments, to "learn," and to be efficient and competitive all depend, to some extent, on the individuals in their boundaries. It is the management of those individuals, in a way that is consistent with the goals and policies of the entities, that creates value for the organization and results in the creation of human capital as an asset that will be the focus of this book. Many organizations and their executives realize that the critical source of competencies, capabilities and sustainable competitive advantage is not only having the most ingenious product or service, the most exceptional strategy, or the most state-of-the-art technology, but also having the ability to attract, retain, develop and manage its human assets. The study of human capital and assets originated in economics and was later advanced by accounting, human resource, behavioral perspectives, and management, among many others. Being a multilevel construct that is studied from multiple perspectives, it is not surprising that there is no agreement on the definitions or on a method to measure and to value human capital.
A number of developments are making human assets management and measurement increasingly salient to today's executives including changing characteristics of the labor force, the rapid pace of technological innovation, greater international competition, new experiments with organizational structures, and greater attention to customers' relationships. From an economic perspective, the focus on human assets might be even more important. The inability of the financial markets to monetize human (or for that matter any other intellectual) assets results in major market failure. More than 80% of developed countries' economies (as measured by the GDP) are intangibles. Still, the present accounting system in those countries recognizes the value of very few intangible assets (e.g. patents, trademarks, etc.) or only in special circumstances (e.g., goodwill at sale), requiring questionable accounting and/or development of new standards (e.g. FASB statement 142 in the US). Fortunately, the financial markets recognize this issue by providing close to zero returns to financial and tangible assets and searching urgently for new sources of income and/or opportunities for value monetization. The increasing pace of economic bubbles and the high level of unemployment and under-employment, especially of the younger generation is another indicator of a desperately needed solution for this market failure. Despite this urgent need, the effectiveness of these embryonic attempts to develop monetizing methods became questionable. As such, it became painfully clear that we are absent of a comprehensive, unifying theory and, more importantly, a reliable, transparent and widely accepted measurement system for the valuation of Human Capital and Assets (HC&A). Research needs to be done at the macro, mezzo and micro level (including multiple levels), from numerous perspectives and disciplines, focusing on different and diverse units of analysis (country, region, organization, groups and individuals).
The book will go beyond the current literature by providing a platform for a broad scope of theory building discussion regarding HC&A, and, more importantly, by encouraging a multidisciplinary fusion between diverse disciplines. Specifically, this call for proposals is soliciting chapter proposals from a multidisciplinary array of scholars that can contribute to one or more of the following theoretical perspectives/disciplines: Economic, Economic Development, Financial, Accounting, Systems-Networks, Behavioral, Human Resources and Social. Multi-level and multi-discipline theoretical breakthrough chapters are strongly encouraged. When appropriate, plurality of empirical methods from diverse disciplines that can enhance the building of a holistic theory of HC&A are strongly encouraged.

2013 INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition
Call for Submissions
Submission Deadline: July 1, 2013
We invite you to submit your dissertation proposal to the INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition. Now in its 21st year, this competition is one of the most prestigious available to doctoral students studying organizations. Eight finalists will be chosen, based on reviews by experienced referees. Finalists will present their dissertation proposals in a workshop on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the fall INFORMS Conference held in Minneapolis, MN. During the workshop finalists will receive detailed feedback from a panel of respected organizational scholars who act as final judges for the competition. The all-day workshop also provides a wonderful opportunity to interact with a small group of future colleagues. At the workshop, the judges will select a winner and a runner up.
In order for their dissertation proposals to be considered for this competition, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1. Students must have defended their dissertation proposal between August 1, 2012, and August 1, 2013, but not yet defended their dissertation.
2. The expected completion date for students' dissertations should be on or before July 1, 2014.
3. No part of the dissertation or dissertation proposal may be accepted for publication, provisionally or otherwise, at an academic journal prior to submission for this competition.
We encourage all eligible doctoral students who are studying topics related to organization science to submit summaries of their dissertation proposals. Dissertation proposals addressing issues related to any aspect of organization theory, organizational behavior, strategy, business ethics, or entrepreneurship are welcome.
Submissions should meet the following formatting criteria:
- Proposal summaries must be no longer than 15 double-spaced pages in 12-point Times font with 1-inch margins. Up to 7 additional pages containing references and exhibits may be included.
- Because this is a dissertation proposal competition, empirical results should not appear in the dissertation proposal summary or appendices.
Dissertation proposals will be judged based on soundness of theory, methodological rigor, and contribution to the field of organization science. In keeping with the mission of the INFORMS College on Organization Science, boldness and innovation of the dissertation will be important criteria in the judging process.
The competition is being coordinated this year by Emily Block of the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business. We are fortunate to again be using Organization Science's ScholarOne Manuscripts submission system to manage dissertation proposal submissions and reviews. The web address for submissions is http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/orgsci. If you do not already have an account you will have to create one. This is a quick and easy process.
Applications must be received by July 1, 2013. Dissertation proposal summaries that do not meet the formatting criteria will be returned to students without review. In addition to the proposal summary, each application must include a nomination letter from the applicant's adviser certifying that the student is likely to complete the dissertation by July 1, 2014 and the date when the student advanced to candidacy – there is no need for a detailed recommendation letter.
Please follow Organization Science's instructions for submitting your proposal. A couple of important things to note:
• In step 1, select the manuscript type "Proposal."
• In step 2, Attributes, please select a few key words to aid in assigning reviewers.
• In step 4, Reviewers and Editors, do not recommend any reviewers. However, you should indicate Emily Block as your preferred SENIOR EDITOR.
• In step 5, Details and Comments, paste your cover letter into the window and use the browse attachment function to attach your COVER PAGE as well as YOUR ADVISER'S NOMINATION LETTER.
• In step 6, Upload Files, upload a copy of your proposal WITHOUT ITS COVER PAGE OR OTHER IDENTIFYING INFORMATION. The first page should include only your dissertation title and abstract.

Postdoc and two PhD Positions on Innovation in Creative Industries
Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) / University of Amsterdam (UvA)
Rotterdam School of Management and the University of Amsterdam offer three research positions on innovation in the creative industries:
- Postdoc (4 years/2 years)
- 2 PhD positions.
The researchers work on the project 'The battle of the souls: cultural and business orientations of creative firms and their effects on business models, growth and internationalisation.'
1: Postdoc on 'Collaboration between creative enterprises and firms from other sectors' (4 years / 2 years)
The postdoc will investigate the effects of the cultural and business orientation of creative enterprises in the context of their networks of relations, and particularly in their relations with firms from other sectors. The question is how the cultural and business orientations of creative enterprises affect their networks, how these networks contribute to the cultural and business performance of the creative enterprise, and how the existing network contributes to a newly formed relationship with a firm from another sector. The research methodology will consist of case studies and a survey.
The position is for 4-years, but candidates interested in a postdoc position for 2 years can also apply.
If you are interested in this position, please email your cv and letter of interest to Prof. Jan van den Ende, RSM, jende@rsm.nl.
2: PhD on 'Innovative capabilities of creative enterprises'
The PhD student will investigate the effects of the cultural and business orientations of creative enterprises in relation to their innovative capabilities. Innovative capabilities refer to internal and external collaborative capabilities, idea generation routines, knowledge development routines, decision procedures, etc. The question is to which extent the cultural and business orientations of creative enterprises are related to their innovative capabilities, and how each of these (cultural orientation, business orientation, innovative capabilities) separately and in combination contribute to cultural and business performance. The research methodology will consist of a few preparatory case studies and a survey. Use can be made of the existing Erasmus Competition and Innovation Monitor and the yearly survey of the Dutch Association of Dutch Designers (one of the members of the advisory board).
For a detailed description of the project and the application procedure please visit: http://www.erim.eur.nl/doctoral-programme/phd-in-management/phd-projects/detail/1059-innovative-capabilities-of-creative-enterprises/
3: PhD on Orientations and business models of creative enterprises
The PhD student will investigate how the two orientations of creative enterprises affect the business models that they apply, also over time, and how these business models affect performance. For instance, a creative enterprise may first create cultural recognition by giving away design, to be able to take advantage of the reputation in selling clothes to specific consumer segments later on. So, business models are particularly useful to balance and convert the two types of orientations into performance outcomes. The project takes a longitudinal perspective, studying the relation between the two orientations of creative enterprises and their effects over time. The research methodology consists of collecting a wide variety of at least 40 cases of creative enterprises and more quantitative data based on the yearly survey of the Association of Dutch Designers.
