At the heels of the recent financial crisis, nations and corporations seek policies and strategies that drive innovation, entrepreneurship and growth. Policy makers, business practitioners and academics attempt to uncover the strategies and best practices that can revitalize the economy. Old strategies are revisited while new strategies are evaluated in an effort to restart the economy and leave the crisis behind. Startup firms are formed with the aim of introducing innovative solutions while established firms attempt to leverage their market access. In this pursuit for
entrepreneurial drivers, nations and corporations seek to cooperate and
coordinate their policies and strategies in order to recover and reengage in business development. Startup and restart strategies are needed to cope with these challenges and opportunities. How can corporations facilitate innovation and harness an entrepreneurial spirit? How can startup firms in various parts of the world achieve leadership positions in international markets? How can startup firms organize their operations and establish supportive infrastructures of investors, business partners, suppliers and customers that enable them to enhance efficiency and performance? What common challenges do developing countries face in nurturing multinational
corporations? What business practices support innovation and enhance firms'
positions in international markets? What roles do interfirm cooperation and
coordination serve in the economic development of corporations and nations?
These important questions have captured the attention of strategy scholars
and business practitioners interested in capitalizing on the opportunities that await countries and corporations beyond the economic recovery.
This special SMS conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, will bring together academics, practitioners, and consultants in an effort to contemplate how entrepreneurs, corporations and nations can leverage cooperation and coordination in order to revitalize their operations, initiate growth, and bring innovation to international markets. The conference theme "Startup and Restart Strategies" underscores both the challenges and opportunities that startup firms and corporations face when seeking to foster innovation, commercialization and global market reach following a period of economic setback. The conference seeks to explore ideas and deliver cutting-edge
knowledge in areas of organization, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and international business that shed light on this phenomenon. The Tel Aviv special SMS conference calls for relevant conceptual and empirical contributions from various parts of the world that can facilitate conversation and scholarly debate, and inform academic thought and practice.
The conference combines four competitive tracks with plenary keynote sessions, a practice track, a doctoral workshop, and academic development workshops that together promote the theme of startup and restart strategies. The competitive tracks align broadly with the domains of the Competitive Strategy, Corporate Strategy, Global Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy, and Cooperative Strategies interest groups of SMS. We welcome submissions of paper proposals, panel proposals, academic development workshops, and doctoral workshop applications, using the following links:

CALL FOR PAPERS
41st Annual Conference SOUTHWEST ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT
(In conjunction with the Federation of Business Disciplines)
March 11-15, 2014, Dallas, TX.
Management for a Sustainable Future
The Southwest Academy of Management is pleased to announce a call for papers for the 41st annual conference in the "Big D" - Dallas, Texas. The theme of the conference is "Management for a Sustainable Future". We invite your scholarly contributions in the form of papers, symposia, panels and workshops to advance our understanding of the role of management in building a sustainable future.
The greatest challenge of our times is to enable a sustainable future where the quality of life is enhanced, where harmony and equity exists among all stakeholders, where the relationship between business, society and the planet is mutually reinforcing, and where business value does not exist at the cost of societal or environmental well-being. What can management scholarship do to arrive at such a sustainable future? What theoretical insights can we leverage to design better operations, products, and services? Can we envision a different purpose that looks beyond financial profit to include social value and environmental performance? What theories and practices serve or hinder our striving toward this goal? How can we overcome current shortcomings in management thought and action? What (if any) are the possible limitations of such an approach? What fundamental tensions or conflicts may likely arise and why? How can management educators, entrepreneurs and practitioners contribute towards a sustainable future? Submissions on these and other related topics in management are invited.
Innovative Workshops, Panels and Symposia related to management theory, empirics, practice or teaching are also invited. Submissions are double blind reviewed, and accepted papers are published in the proceedings. Work in progress may be submitted to the Research Pipeline where authors will get individual attention from assigned mentors to develop their papers. A Doctoral Student Consortium is held and we offer limited financial support to select participants who have accepted papers in the conference.
The Southwest Academy of Management is affiliated with the Academy of Management as well as the Journal of Business Strategies, which publishes papers from all business-related fields.
The Irwin/McGraw-Hill Distinguished Paper Award given to the overall best paper in the conference will allow these authors to work with special reviewers to prepare the paper for publication in the Journal of Business Strategies. Awards are also given for Best Papers and Outstanding Reviewers in each track.
Submission Deadline: September 30, 2013 at www.swamfbd.org. The site is now ready for submissions.
Papers may be submitted in the following tracks:
Entrepreneurship, Small Business and Innovation
Organizational Theory, Strategy and International Business
Organizational Behavior and Leadership
Human Resources, Careers and Diversity
Hospitality, Health Care and Operations Management
Social Issues, Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility
Organizational Development and Conflict Management

Group & Organization Management, CALL FOR PROPOSALS Conceptual Issue
Group & Organization Management is pleased to announce that Professors Lucy Gilson (University of Connecticut) and Caren Goldberg (American University) will serve as Editors for the next GOM Conceptual Issue.
Accordingly, the Special Issue Editors would like to invite authors to submit proposals for the fourth Group & Organization Management Conceptual Issue. Articles for the Conceptual Issue are intended to be high-impact scholarly pieces based on extant developments in research literatures. This Conceptual Issue will consist of papers that offer more than just a summary of existing knowledge in a certain area. Beyond summarizing recent research, manuscripts should provide an integration of management literatures, offer an integrated framework, provide value added, and highlight directions for future inquiry. Papers are not expected to offer empirical data. Inter-disciplinary and/or multi-level insights on management and organizational processes are encouraged.
To be considered for the Special Conceptual Issue, authors must first submit a proposal. Proposals should contain 1500-1800 words (a figure and/or table can be added) and should provide sample references. References, figures, and tables do not count against the word count. All proposals will be subject to editorial review prior to requesting that they be developed into full papers. Full papers will NOT be considered at the proposal stage. Submissions will be evaluated on the following criteria:
(a) Relevance. The proposed manuscript should thoroughly review a significant and important research area within the group and organizational management field.
(b) Viability. The proposal demonstrates how the paper will be completed within the time frame below. (c) Scope of Interest. A proposal of broad interest to scholars in diverse research areas is preferred. (d) Organization and Coherence. The proposal follows a logical structure, reads clearly, and thoroughly represents the field of knowledge.
(e) Conceptual Value Added. The proposal offers insights that go beyond a thorough summary of current literature.
(f) Agenda for Future Research. The proposal conveys relevant implications for future research.
Authors must adhere to a stringent timeline. Relevant dates are as follows:
- September 13, 2013: Proposal submission due date.
- November 15, 2013: Final decision on proposal and initial feedback provided to authors.
- May 9, 2014: First draft of paper due.
- August 8, 2014: Feedback to authors on first draft.
- November 7, 2014: Final paper submitted.
Proposals should be submitted as a single file to Lucy Gilson at lgilson@business.uconn.edu
