Exploring value in the digital economy.
What does value in the digital economy mean?
Who creates value in the digital economy and how?
How is value captured in the digital economy and by whom?
Lightning Talks – Win £500 – DE 2013 4/6 November
The DE Open Digital Conference takes place November 4-6, Media City, Salford, UK
Digital technologies are re-shaping our lives in many ways, for example: in how products and services are designed, fabricated, delivered and consumed; how individuals and organisations connect and interact with each other; in the processes of and opportunities for innovation; and, by the ways in which transactions are enabled. All of these have implications for how we think about value and opportunities for its creation, ascription, attribution, capture and measurement in businesses, their ecosystems and society in general.
At DE2013, we are proud to announce our first ever Young Researcher Lightning Talks. We will be running a session of lightning presentations dedicated to the exploration of value in the digital economy, its implications for business and wider society and the challenges and possibilities that these implications bring for scholarship in the area.
Lightning presentations are new to DE2013 and are designed to provide a lively, informative, and fun exchange of ideas: and these ideas may be complete or still being developed. Presentations will be followed by a moderated panel and audience discussion. At the conclusion of the session, audience and panel will be invited to vote for their favourite idea, and the winner will receive a £500 award sponsored by NEMODE. So, share with us something you're working on, fresh insights emerging from your studies, your interesting stories of value in the Digital Economy: this is your opportunity to present your exciting new ideas connected to Value in the Digital Economy.
Young researchers – within 3 years of having completed their PhD – and Masters and PhD students are particularly encouraged to submit. We welcome research presentations and ideas from any discipline from anthropology to business and management, and from computer science to engineering, but they must address the overall theme of the session: Value in the Digital Economy. Indicative themes include, but are not restricted to:
· How is value created and captured in ecosystems and how should it be apportioned?
· The metrics of value: what should be measured, by whom, how and why?
· Whose value is it? Value accountability, equity etc
· Value types: community, social, monetised...
· What are the implications of big data for value?
· How does 'Digital' change our conceptualisation of value?
· Case Studies of Value in the digital economy DE – tell us your stories
Successful applicants will present their ideas – conceptual, theoretical, empirical, case study etc - with a maximum of 3 Powerpoint slides and in no more than 5 minutes.
To apply for consideration, please submit a short abstract in the following format:
· Title (max 70 characters)
· Applicant's name
· Career stage: (Masters or PhD student, years since PhD qualification)
· Applicant's affiliation
· Applicant's contact details
· Abstract (max 150 words)
Queries should be addressed to Richard Adams at r.j.adams@exeter.ac.uk. Please submit proposals to r.j.adams@exeter.ac.uk by 20 September 2013. Selected applicants will be notified by 1 October.

Quantitative Multidisciplinary Approaches in Human Capital and Asset Management
Edited by Meir Russ, published by IGI Global
Call for Book Chapter Proposals
In the 'knowledge economy' it is widely recognized that the effective engagement and utilization of human capital and the other facets of intellectual capital are critical, if not the only means to organizations' short-term success and long-term survival. Organizations and their officers realize that the critical sources of competencies, capabilities, and sustainable competitive advantage require the ability to attract, retain, develop, manage, and reward effectively their human assets. Yet, few are actually 'walking the walk' and even fewer are using quantitative tools to develop and manage this 'fuzzy' asset. A number of developments are making human assets, management and measurement increasingly more prominent to today's executives, including: changing demographics of the labor force, the increasingly rapid pace of technological innovation, rapidly changing global competition, greater attention to customers' changing needs, and experimentation with new intra and inter-organizational structures. At the same time, the lack of legal and institutional standardized frameworks and infrastructure, underlined by the lack of agreed-upon definitions and theories make such an attempt a difficult, if not impossible one. In response to this growing gap and escalating challenges, this book is envisioned as a manuscript that will provide a robust scientific and quantitative foundation for a multi-disciplinary, multi-level theory of human capital and human assets.
The study of human capital and assets originated in economics, and was later advanced by accounting, human resource, and strategic management (among many others). Lacking a comprehensive, unifying theory, it became agonizingly clear that a reliable, transparent and widely accepted measurement system for the valuation of human capital and assets at the organization level is missing. From the broader economic and legal perspectives, the focus on human assets might be even more important. The inability of the financial markets to monetize human (or for that matter any other intellectual) assets is resulting in a major market failure. This book calls for a multidisciplinary, multi-level discussion that is urgently needed.
Quantitative research needs to be done at multiple levels, from numerous perspectives and disciplines, focusing on different and diverse units of analysis (country, region, organization, groups and individuals). Specifically, this call solicits chapter proposals from a multidisciplinary array of scholars that can contribute to one or more of (but not limited to) the following perspectives/disciplines: Economic, Financial, Accounting, Systems-Networks, Biological, Physics, Behavioral, Human Resources, Economic Development and Regional Development. Additional perspectives, if proposed, will be considered. Multi-level and multi-discipline chapters discussing quantitative research findings are strongly encouraged. When appropriate, pluralities of empirical methods from diverse disciplines are also encouraged.

Submit your chapter proposal as a Microsoft Word email attachment. We would most appreciate a one-to-two page proposal outlining your chapter and identifying your theoretic discipline, theories, and, when applicable, empirical method approaches related to human capital and assets. You should plan 7000-10000 words for a chapter. Each chapter should commence with a broader scope summary of the perspective to underpin the chapter within (or between) perspectives. For a case study, you should plan 4000-7000 words and each case should clearly state the dilemmas and the perspectives illustrated. Each case also should provide the data needed to test alternative methods or interpretations. Include, as a separate file, a brief biography covering your current institutional affiliation and position, a listing of your relevant publications and educational background, and any other pertinent information on your qualifications for contributing to this manuscript.
Each chapter will undergo a double-blind peer review process by anonymous reviewers.

Technology continues to transform the way in which organizations manage their human capital and deliver human resource functionality. Because of the increasing interest by researchers on role of technology on human capital management (cf. Dineen & Noe, 2009; Stone & Dulebohn, 2013), and because of an increasing interest in the strategic potential of electronic human resources management (eHRM) (cf. Lepak & Snell, 1998; Strohmeier, 2007; Marler & Fisher, 2013), it is important for the field to pause and take stake of our current knowledge on eHRM. Thus, the goal of this PDW is to bring together both eHRM experts and those with an interest in conducting eHRM research and to engage in discussions about the current state of research and the types of research questions necessitated by the continued advances in technology. The PDW will focus on topics such as e-Recruiting, e-Selection, e-learning/training, HR Administration, International Issues and eHRM, diversity and multiculturalism, social media, and privacy. The PDW will last two hours and is designed to be interactive. Following a brief introduction, participants will break into groups where they can discuss these topics, developing research on each of the above topics. Following these brief discussions each table will briefly discuss the key research needs moving forward. We will then have a brief conversation wrapping up the PDW. Whether you are interested in firms or teams, markets or individuals, entrepreneurship or sustainability - behavior is everywhere. People interact in markets, they start businesses, they collaborate in teams, they interlink boards, they grow social networks, they judge and decide.
Wherever your research lies, you necessarily make assumptions about people and their behavior. How do we find assumptions (and theories) that are realistic, parsimonious, and generalizable?

Diversity & Inclusion Theme Committee (D&ITC) NEWS
Some of the D&ITC's aims are to:
1. increase the awareness, importance, and impact of diversity and inclusion in AOM in a sustainable manner;
2. identify and remove systemic, structural, and social barriers to diversity and inclusion in AOM;
3. promote diversity and inclusion in AOM by increasing the representation, involvement and access of underrepresented groups at all levels;
4. act as a resource to the AOM community by disseminating guidelines and tools on diversity and inclusion;
5. provide opportunities for dialogue, mutual learning, and cooperation among AOM members worldwide with different backgrounds.
With these aims in mind, a major activity for D&ITC this past year was launching a Survey of Inclusion in the Academy of Management, which was sent to a random sample of half of the members during April. We are now analyzing the survey results.
Further, the D&ITC has put together an exciting program for the AOM in Orlando. We invite you to participate in the sessions listed below, such as the sharing of the D&ITC survey results at the D&ITC Town Hall meeting. While historical research has played a central role in the development of the strategy literature, it remains underrepresented in strategy journals. This PDW explores how historical analysis can inform strategy research. As the strategy field continues to develop dynamic models of strategy, the historical perspective can provide unique perspective, and could potentially even develop a history-based theory of strategy. Yet, doing historical research in strategy faces methodological challenges given its different approach to the development of theory and use of evidence. Consequently, this PDW addresses the different opportunities available to strategy scholars to engage in the historical method.
The format of the PDW is a combination of 1) presentations in which scholars experienced in conducting historical analysis within the strategy and organizational fields discuss the challenges of doing this work and 2) interactive breakout sessions in which participants break into smaller groups to discuss design of a historical study in topical strategy research areas, such as dynamic capabilities and industry evolution. These breakout sessions will help identify how the historical approach can make novel theoretical contributions and reveal roadmaps for pushing this work further.
Pre-registration is not required.

Apologies for cross-posting!
We are conducting a research work to understand the impact of technology allocation on IT professionals. One part of our research is to study technology and its characteristics which provide explanation on how do technologies differ. We have already finished the first qualitative phase and found four characteristics of technology. We would prefer to use an established scale on these technology characteristics (the details are given below).
Technology characteristics
1. Technology obsolescence
2. Ease of learning or challenging technology
3. Market dominance or significance of technology
4. Growth potential or perceived future growth/opportunities.
If you are aware of any scale that captures the above characteristic of technology, kindly share it with us.
Thank you in advance.
