    Technology Business Incubation Mechanisms

Incubation infrastructures, mechanisms, and emerging business models to help create and nurture technology based innovative firms

Historically, the modern business incubation movement started in 1959 with the establishment of the first formal incubator in New York. In 1979 David Birch highlighted the potential of innovative small firms in the growth of jobs and the vibrancy of national economies and this stimulated much research and debate and catalyzed the development of the incubation movement. In parallel the establishment of Stanford Industrial Park in 1951 led throughout the 1970s and 1980s to the introduction of more significant incubation infrastructure and mechanisms such as science parks and technology incubators. Much of this activity reflected a policy shift toward promoting academic entrepreneurship and commercialization of R&D results. Some of these regional efforts culminated in the development of innovative firm clusters, and to the coveted Silicon Valley phenomenon, envied around the world.

These key business incubation mechanisms/infrastructure elements continued to evolve and expand over the next several decades with steady increases in the numbers and type of models throughout the 1980s and beyond, first in the USA and then in Europe and elsewhere; today several thousand such facilities are operating around the globe (Mian 2011). However, there has been a dearth of theoretical frameworks available to assess how they are working and thereby improve their effectiveness (Mian, 1997, 2001, Rothaermel and Thursby, 2005). To take stock of progress in this field, assess past achievements and consider future direction, we argue that a comparative global experience and study of various incubation models and their progression over time will result in useful insights.

In order to assemble papers for this Special Issue we consider that one of the critical challenges for entrepreneurship researchers is to advance knowledge on the evolution of the role of incubation mechanisms in supporting science & technology based startups. We also need to improve our understanding of the characteristics of sustainable new generation models for business incubation (Mian, Fayolle, Lamine 2012) taking into account the supply and demand for services (Bruneel, Ratinho, Clarysse,  Groen, 2012) and consider what will be their value proposition in the future.

The Special Issue, therefore, seeks to publish leading edge original research that will contribute significantly to our knowledge and understanding of how infrastructure elements/mechanisms can support technology-oriented business incubation. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

    ·                     Assessment of technology business incubation programs

    ·                     New generation sustainable  incubation models

    ·                     Demand and supply of technology incubation services

    ·                     S&T parks and incubators as drivers of regional innovation ecosystems

    ·                     University incubators and experiential entrepreneurship education

    ·                     Research methodology and theory relating to technology incubation

    ·                     International comparative studies

    ·                     General versus specialized models

    ·                     Technology business accelerators

    ·                     Technology trampolines

    ·                     Proof of concept centers

    ·                     Technology incubator  mechanisms in emerging countries

    Job Positions and Research Questions

    --------------------------------------------------------

The Department of Management, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (MIE) at North Carolina State University's Poole College of Management welcomes applications to a newly-created position for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship to begin in August, 2014. An earned Ph.D. in a relevant area is required. Salary is competitive. We will begin screening applications immediately, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. This position is part of the College's continued commitment to grow our presence in entrepreneurship: we are also in the process of recruiting a Distinguished University Chair in entrepreneurship.

Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience and primary research interests in the area of entrepreneurship. We are looking for candidates with a strong commitment to excellence in research and publication and the desire and ability to teach in undergraduate and graduate programs. A shared commitment to helping us continue to build a leading entrepreneurship research and teaching program (including a Ph.D. program) will be essential. The Entrepreneurship Collaborative, a center within MIE, is building a set of programs and activities to support faculty whose research would benefit from doing field experiments involving local entrepreneurs and ventures. This "clinical" model will allow us to involve more of our undergraduate and graduate students in research activities and provide strong integration across theory-driven research, teaching and engagement in entrepreneurship.

We are an engaged and highly collegial group of scholars, working in one of the world's very best locations for people interested in the intersection of management and technology. Our tenured/tenure-track faculty currently includes: Professors Brad Kirkman (Department Head), Steve Allen, Ted Baker, Steve Barr, Robert Clark, Roger Mayer and Beverly Tyler; Associate Professors Lynda Aiman-Smith, Shannon Davis, Steve Markham, Paul Mulvey, and Greggry Young; and Assistant Professors Nachiket Bhawe, Turanay Caner, and David Townsend (visiting).

Highly interdisciplinary in nature, the MIE department has faculty with research programs in entrepreneurship, strategy, management of technology and innovation, organizational behavior, and human resources. The MIE department (http://poole.ncsu.edu/index-exp.php/mie/mie) and other departments in the Poole College of Management house several distinguished academic centers, including The Entrepreneurship Collaborative (TEC) (http://tec.poole.ncsu.edu/), Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS ) (http://cims.ncsu.edu/), Biosciences Initiative (http://biosci.poole.ncsu.edu), Supply Chain Research Cooperative (http://scm.ncsu.edu), and the Enterprise Risk Management Initiative (http://poole.ncsu.edu/erm/). We also have several international partnerships with universities around the globe. Our faculty collaborate actively with faculty across the university and beyond.

North Carolina State University is located in Raleigh, NC, within minutes of the technology-rich companies of the Research Triangle Park region and also quite near Duke University and UNC at Chapel Hill (http://www.visitraleigh.com/). With over 34,000 students and over 200 degree programs at the bachelor's, master's, professional, and doctoral levels, NC State University is the largest university in North Carolina and is a major research university with traditional strengths in science and technology. MIE faculty have participated actively in winning two recent National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers: FREEDM and ASSIST. Our 1000- acre Centennial Campus adjoins the 700-acre main campus and has been recently selected as the Best University Research Park in the United States. The Research Triangle area is routinely and repeatedly judged as among the best places in the country to start and grow a business and as a great place to live for people of all ages. The local cultural and arts scene would do much larger cities proud. You can enjoy the mountains (the best east of the Rockies) and the beach (endless and freely accessible) during the same weekend, stopping to enjoy several large recreational lakes along the way.

SUNY-Korea seeks two faculty (rank open) in the area of technology policy and innovation. Desired specializations are energy/environment, information systems, health technologies, or STEM education.

Activities of Stony Brook University (and the Department of Technology & Society) at SUNY-Korea

SUNY-Korea is an international campus of the State University of New York. It is now in its second year of operation, with three departments of SUNY-Stony Brook's College of Engineering & Applied Science offering degree programs at the Korea campus. Stony Brook's Department of Technology & Society is leading the growth at SUNY-Korea.

Facilities and equipment are new and impressive. SUNY-Korea is part of the Songdo Global University Campus, which will ultimately be shared by a number of leading universities of the world. George Mason University, University of Ghent, and University of Utah will join the SGUC in 2014, promising exciting synergies. Other SUNY campuses and Stony Brook departments will follow suit.

Songdo is a new city, close to South Korea's major international airport at Incheon. A great many Korean and foreign high-tech firms (as well as major multilateral organizations like the UN Green Climate Fund and the World Bank) have already located in Songdo, and our relationships with them are excellent.

The Department now offers the BS and MS in Technological Systems Management and the PhD in Technology, Policy and Innovation. New MS and BS concentrations are under development. BS and PhD students are required to spend two semesters in New York.

Instruction is in English. Currently most students are Korean, but we expect a strong influx of students from Asian countries in the near future, and from worldwide shortly after.

    Job Description

Our new colleagues will reside at or near Songdo, beginning in January, 2013. S/he will teach courses at SUNY-Korea at undergraduate and master's levels, and (depending on qualifications) teach PhD courses and supervise PhD students. The base course load of three courses/semester is negotiable depending on department project and service activity. An active research program is expected, and government grants are generally available for new faculty.

Other employment benefits are attractive. This is an exciting project with much growth potential.

These are SUNY-Korea tenure track positions.

    Qualifications

    ·       Leadership qualities. Willingness to pitch in to engage in a variety of tasks as SUNY Korea advances through its late startup phase.

    ·       Strong technical background (science, math, or engineering degree preferred) with demonstrated interest and achievement in social and policy aspects/implications of the technical work.

    ·       Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students.

    ·       A record of research and evidence of potential for continued research productivity.

    ·       Experience in American education (having taught or received at least 3 or 4 years of his/her education in American higher education). Excellent English is a must.

    ·       Willingness to travel occasionally for recruitment or outreach teaching, primarily in Asian countries.

    ·       Enthusiastic about new experiences and skilled at cross-cultural communication.
