    PDW Description

    The purpose of this professional development workshop is to stimulate research into the multilevel nature of knowledge transfer and knowledge creation within and between organizations. While research has examined the influence of social networks on innovation at different levels of analysis – the micro, meso and macro - we know little about how these levels interact. Specifically, an understanding of the micro-foundations of higher-level innovation networks is largely missing. This workshop aims to bring together doctoral students and faculty from multiple topical domains who share a common interest in innovation networks and who wish to contribute to innovation network research, in general, and multilevel innovation networks research, in particular. The workshop will consist of two modules: (1) short presentations by experienced scholars who are investigating the multilevel nature of innovation networks, followed by general Q and A; and (2) small group discussions of participants' interests in and research efforts on the topic of multilevel innovation networks, facilitated by PDW presenters.

    Apologies for Cross-Postings
    Dear All,

    We invite you to consider attending our PDW on Where in the World? A Guide to International Academic Sabbaticals" at AOM Orlando, on Saturday, Aug 10 2013 8:00AM - 10:00AM at WDW Dolphin Resort in Oceanic 6.

    This PDW will provide a platform to engage in a discussion on a range of issues to assist academics who are thinking of a sabbatical outside of their home country. Facilitators will give an overview of their experiences with sabbaticals in Chile, Iceland, Israel, London, Switzerland, South Africa and USA. They will discuss the challenges and benefits of international sabbaticals, the impact on their research agenda, the longer term effects on their career, their teaching repertoire and their families. The facilitators represent middle to senior level academicians. With a range of experience we expect their stories will reflect some of the shocks and surprises of their international sabbaticals. We have consciously chosen facilitators who represent a 'typical' profile (i.e. relatively few travel experiences, with family, and at least a semester abroad). This purposeful sampling provides richer information about the challenges and discoveries made by the individual. The aim of the session is for all participants to gain insights into international sabbatical process and learn from the experiences of others in successfully navigating their time abroad. The format of the PDW will include discussions by the facilitators followed by small group discussions with audience and a question/answer session.

    Dear TIM members,

    Any researcher concerned with moving forward our understanding of industry evolution are most cordially invited to our showcase panel symposium which will take place during the Academy of Management Meeting in Orlando. Sponsored by BPS, ENT, and TIM divisions, we are expecting to have a well-attended and lively discussion of greater interest to a very wide audience - researchers in the fields of business policy and strategy, entrepreneurship, technology and innovation management, operations management, business history etc. We also urge you to submit beforehand questions that you want to encourage the panelists to address (to buzunca@iese.edu). The details of the panel are as follows:

    Industry Evolution (Ir)regularities: Do We Need a More General/Unified Theory?

    Monday, Aug 12 2013 3:00PM - 4:30PM at WDW Swan Resort in Osprey 2

    Sponsored by the BPS, ENT, and TIM divisions

    Chair: Bilgehan Uzunca; IESE Business School

    Moderator: Michael Lenox; U. of Virginia

    Participants: Rajshree Agarwal; U. of Maryland; Javier Gimeno; INSEAD; Rahul Kapoor; U. of Pennsylvania; Marvin B Lieberman; U. of California, Los Angeles.

    In this panel symposium, we aim to stimulate a rich discussion on theories of industry evolution. Building on the work of scholars such as Abernathy, Agarwal, Klepper, and Utterback, researchers have explained common patterns of industry evolution that occur in a wide range of industries. Recently there has been a resurgence of research effort, from various disciplinary perspectives, that focuses on inconsistencies across industries and raises attention to irregularities where patterns do not follow the theory. In this symposium, we will draw on this research to explore where improvements in theories of industry evolution are possible. Briefly going over what have we have learned on industry evolution so far, we will focus on irregularities; when and why they are likely to take place, how we can explain them, and whether they can be incorporated in a more general theory of industry evolution.

    Why We All Should Be Bayesians: Opportunities of Bayesian Statistics for Management Research Friday, Aug 9, 2013 at 10:15 AM - 12:15 PM, WDW Coronado Springs Resort, Coronado M,N,P, Academy of Management Conference in Orlando, FL

    Andreas Schwab (Iowa State University)

    This workshop introduces management researchers to the opportunities of Bayesian statistics for empirical research in the management sciences. We will outline the fundamental features of the Bayesian method without delving into the mathematical details. Instead, we will first outline the conceptual differences and potential advantages of a Bayesian approach compared to traditional statistical analyses involving null-hypothesis significance tests (NHSTs). We will then show examples from empirical management research that illustrate Bayesian data analysis. Finally, we will discuss why in spite of strong arguments supporting the use of Bayesian statistics, the field of management research has been very reluctant considering Bayesian analysis as an alternative. The purpose of this workshop is to convince participants of the potential opportunities Bayesian methods can provide and to enable organizational researchers to apply these methods in future research.

    No pre-registration is required to attend this session.

    For further information on this session, please contact Andreas Schwab (aschwab@iastate.edu).

    Register now to attend the 1st Management Theory Conference that will take place September 27-28, 2013 in San Francisco, California.

    As articles in the Academy journals have noted, there is a shortage of new management and organization theories. In order to help address this shortage, the mission of the conference is to facilitate, recognize, and reward the creation of new theories that advance our understanding of management and organizations. We want to motivate researchers to create new theories and to provide researchers with a supportive forum for those new theories to be presented and discussed.

    Keynote speakers include:

    Jeffrey Pfeffer, Stanford University

    Roy Suddaby, editor, Academy of Management Review

    No apologies for cross-posting.  ;-)

    Ever noticed that scholars from different management fields - e.g., organizational behavior, business ethics, entrepreneurship, strategy, operations, human resources, etc - seem like they are talking in different languages? If you've ever wanted to understand the implicit norms that explain the differences between management fields, this symposium is for you.

    Understanding the Implicit Norms of Different Academy of Management Divisions
    Program Session #: 1080 | Submission: 11045 | Sponsor(s): (MOC)
    Scheduled: Monday, Aug 12 2013 3:00PM - 4:30PM at WDW Dolphin Resort in Europe 4

    Coordinator: Johannes Meuer; U. of Zurich;
    Coordinator: Will Felps; Australian School of Business, UNSW;
    Panelist: Kevin Crowston; National Science Foundation;
    Panelist: Prithviraj Chattopadhyay; Hong Kong U. of Science and Technology;
    Panelist: Giuseppe Labianca; U. of Kentucky;
    Panelist: William McKinley; SIU Carbondale;

    The central idea of this Panel Symposium is that it is easier to learn from and contribute to a field within management if one understands the implicit, mutually reinforcing norms of different Academy of Management Divisions. In order to understand these implicit norms, two of the Panel Symposium presentations will display bibliometric maps of the Divisions and Terms that comprise the management field. These visualizations frame the presentations of four established scholars, who will discuss the implicit norms governing specific specialties, theorize on the nature of the differences between specialties, and reflect upon the difficulties in bridging different specialties and some approaches to facilitate such boundary-spanning activities.

    PDW: "Single" and "Multiple" Entrepreneurial Opportunities: Initiating a Dialogue (Session #314) Saturday, August 10th, 13h00 to 15h00, at Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Swan 4

    Sponsors: ENT, BPS, TIM

    Organisers: Marc Gruber, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne; Susan Hill, London School of Economics

    Participants: Julian Birkinshaw, London Business School; Ian MacMillan, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; Gina O'Connor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Shaker Zahra, University of Minnesota

    Although empirical research shows that individuals or teams may simultaneously recognize, evaluate and act on multiple opportunities, our understanding of this phenomenon and its fundamental implications for the entrepreneurial process is embryonic. This is largely because much research has implicitly assumed that an individual or team, whether in an independent or corporate entrepreneurial setting, recognizes and decides whether to act on a single opportunity at any given time. A "multiple" opportunity perspective may, however, add valuable new insights to our understanding of both opportunity recognition and exploitation processes, and entrepreneurial outcomes.

    This multi-disciplinary PDW invites all scholars and practitioners with an interest in business opportunities. We intend to take stock of an emerging body of theory and empirical research investigating the identification of multiple opportunities and to develop an agenda to guide future research efforts in this direction. Towards that end, the PDW will begin with panel presentations by leading academics from diverse research backgrounds (entrepreneurship, innovation, strategy etc.) to reflect critically on the implications of a multiple opportunity approach in their work. This will be followed by roundtable discussions between panellists and members of the audience to develop the contours of a richer agenda for future research on business opportunities.
