    The business community has seen countless claims regarding the potential role of information systems toward more effective operational decision making.  It is now recognized that the simple possession of information systems does not imply effective use of these systems by individuals charged with operating decisions.  The amount of time and money spent on IS systems are similarly insufficient proxies for their use.  In order to truly diagnose the linkages between information systems and operational benefits, a much more micro-level of study is necessary.  Such a micro-level view must delve deeper than the common considerations of training programs, deployment of system experts, cross-functional integration, and other organization-wide concepts.  It must fundamentally attempt to get into the mind of the decision maker and ask questions regarding why certain information is regularly sought out while other information may be ignored; how the information obtained subsequently is manipulated and interpreted; why some conclusions associated with immediate benefit are forgotten while others that imply greater risk of loss are pursued.  These questions require the consideration of the psychological mechanisms that serve as barriers and motivators of continued and evolving use of IT in operational decision making.

    This Special Topic Forum (STF) calls upon researchers to challenge some of the well-established beliefs regarding the linkages between the availability of information supported by technology and the operational gains obtainable through "better" decision making.  In order to ground this forum in real-world contexts, we will be seeking rigorous empirical works making use of such methodologies as action research and field/lab experiments, case-based investigations coupled with structured or semi-structured survey collection, and system archival mining of use and decision making patterns.  Theoretical models driving the specifics of such data collection and subsequent analysis should make ample use of established behavioral theory as it relates to information system use and operational decision making.  Approaches to analysis can include a wide variety of techniques including both standard statistical comparisons common to experimental research as well as more qualitative approaches, such as content analysis and augmented forms of social network modeling intended to take into account cognitive phenomena.

    While multiple levels of analysis and theories are acceptable, the individual decision maker must represent a key element of the research.  As a result, theories that are fundamentally tied to higher levels of analysis or examine individual technology acceptance behavior (in general) are likely to be ineffective at approaching the kind of detailed research questions sought out by this call and are generally not encouraged.  Instead, theories that focus on decision making cognitive processes to illuminate what happens within the "decision making" black box are encouraged.  Finally, this call places no limitations on the specific form of information system studied or the specific operations management context / problems these systems are intended to benefit.  Having said this, a wide range of research questions are open for consideration:

    Examples topics of interest might, but are certainly not limited to:

    ·       Selective disregard for pricing information in purchasing decisions
    ·
    Adversity to the use of process analysis recommendation in project management
    ·
    Misinterpretation and misuse of supply chain management solutions
    ·
    System circumvention in yield management settings
    ·
    Bias in scheduling constraint specification and performance sensitivity
    ·
    Customer relationship management overloads and assumption making in new service development
    ·
    Organizational information system characteristics and the resulting effects on decision making
    ·
    The role of information integration on work sharing and behavioral outcomes
    ·
    How decision support systems outputs are actually interpreted and interacted with in operations
    ·
    Decision maker ability to identify invalid or inappropriate data in operational decision making systems

    Following the interdisciplinary focus of this STF, the Associate Editors bring expertise in IS, <st1:place w:st="on">OM</st1:place>, and behavioral theory.  Like other STFs, this research collaboration strengthens DSJ's renewed focus on decision making and provides a foundation for future research on the role of the individual decision maker in improving <st1:place w:st="on">OM</st1:place> and IS practices within and between organizations.

    Articles published in this STF must meet Decision Sciences' high standards of research rigor and originality, while embracing managerial relevance, not only in the research problem studied, but also in their impact on enhanced decision making.  STFs consist of a collection of three to five articles that are published in a regular issue along with other peer-reviewed articles.  All submissions must adhere to Decision Sciences journal format and style guidelines.  Manuscripts will be evaluated on the same criteria as regular manuscripts. The evaluation process will be similar to regular paper submissions, except the Associate Editors assigned to the manuscript will be part of the STF Editorial Team.  Manuscript preparation and submission instructions can be found on the journal's web site at http://wpcarey.asu.edu/dsjOnline/index.cfm.  In the cover letter, please indicate that your submission is for the Special Topic Forum on Behavioral issues in IS-Enabled Operational Decision Making.

    Deadline for Submissions: January 20, 2007

    Best regards,

    Jeanne Elliott (on behalf of the Associate Editors)

    Stream title: Development and Globalisation: organising global concerns for security and participation

    Stream Description
    This stream provides a stimulating and exciting space to discuss development and globalisation issues within a critical management studies context. We are inviting papers from diverse world views and academic fields to engage with current political questions that are central to understanding the international organization of development and globalisation.

    We hope to capture how the current political climate has been absorbed in our academic debates on development and globalisation and how these debates have been flavoured by our understandings of human security. We wish to explore the links between critical management studies and development and globalisation issues. These links should be central to all delegates who participate in this stream. However – the main precept from which we launch our call for papers, is for a committed and truly interdisciplinary approach to formulating theoretical assumptions and designing empirical studies.

    Discourse on human security is often directly linked to political pressure to accept a society that is constrained by an apparatus of control. Today, disruptions in our personal space, limitations to our civil rights and additional fees and taxes are often justified by an urgent need for security. Is our life becoming less secure or can these measures enhance security? Who decides what constitutes threat and security?

    While concerns for security are making us anxious and letting us accept limitations to our rights and freedoms, participation in democratic processes seems to require the opposite capabilities. Are participation and security becoming antonyms or is participation a main ingredient for establishing a secure society? Have the processes of public participation evolved to apply to all aspects of our lives?

    Delegates may want to consider the following themes:

    * Organising Human Security

    Autonomy, freedom, choice and security. These are ideas and concepts that preoccupy social theorists – but how can we integrate them together in an understanding of the managerial design and execution of development projects and efforts to globalize? <st1:place w:st="on">First World</st1:place> powers are now pushing for rapid "democratization" in a bid to win the "war on terror". As established international discourses, development and globalization are concepts under threat of becoming dangerously hollow rhetoric, overshadowing the inherently political nature of human security.

    * Organising Participation

    How do our changing understandings of democracy relate to the design and management of development practice? How have these understandings been integrated into discourses of sustainable futures, climate change and gender? Participation can be interpreted as accepting each other's ideas and respecting each other in the most fundamental ways. What anarchical, truly participatory structures have been tested and found adequate?

    * The Politics of Representation

    Representation is inherent to human communication and it is a powerful discursive tool used to legitimate certain practices and ways of knowing. How is this way of communicating operationalised within development organisations and through efforts to globalise? How are these operations relational to managerial discourses? How are spontaneity, argument and polemics impinged by misrepresentation? What are the implications of misrepresentation on a participatory process?

    * Metaphors of Practice

    Focusing more explicitly on the use of discourse in organisational practices, this session explores the emergence of metaphors in developmental work and globalisation debates. Delegates are asked to explore what they feel to be enduring metaphors or archetypical "master" metaphors in development that accent and shape work practices. What new metaphors have surfaced in the recent past and how have they been integrated into our existing understandings of what development is or should be?

    Delegates are encouraged to submit abstracts that reflect on or explicitly engage with the three themes outlined above. We will consider all submissions and actively promote an interdisciplinary approach to understanding development and globalisation issues. In addition, we want to create a space to discuss different methodological approaches in tackling these themes.

    Open Workshop
    Following the success of our workshop with Professor Arturo Escobar at the last CMS conference, we are currently securing a visit from another distinguished academic to contribute to our stream (guest speaker to be advertised soon). All Development and Globalisation presenters will have reserved seating for this special event, which is open to all conference delegates.

    Submission Deadline: August 31, 2006

    We invite you to submit your dissertation proposal to the INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition.  Now in its 15th year, this competition is one of the most prestigious available to doctoral students studying organizations. Finalists will present their dissertation proposals in a workshop on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the Fall INFORMS Conference held in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Pittsburgh</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">PA.</st1:state></st1:place>  During the workshop finalists will receive detailed feedback from a panel of respected organizational scholars who act as final judges for the competition. The all-day workshop also provides a good opportunity to interact with a small group of future colleagues. At the workshop, the judges will award a first and second prize.  The First Prize winner receives a free trip to the Organization Science Winter Conference (registration, lodging, and $500 toward airfare and expenses).  Second prize is a $250 honorarium.

    To be eligible, students must defend their dissertation proposal by August 31, 2006, but have not defended their dissertation by that date.  We encourage all eligible doctoral students who are studying topics related to organization science to apply.  Proposals addressing issues related to any aspect of organization theory, organizational behavior, strategy or entrepreneurship are welcome.

    The dissertation proposals will be judged based on soundness of theory, methodological rigor, and contribution to the field of organization science. In keeping with the mission of the INFORMS College on Organization Science, boldness and innovation will be important criteria in the judging process.

    Applications must be received by August 31, 2006.  Proposals may be no longer than 15 double-spaced pages in 12-point Times font.  Up to 7 additional pages containing references and exhibits may be included. In addition to the proposal, each application must include a nomination letter from the applicant's advisor certifying that the student has advanced to candidacy and is likely to complete their dissertation by December 31, 2007 – we do not need a detailed recommendation letter.

    The competition is being coordinated this year by Tim Pollock of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Penn</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype></st1:place>'s Smeal College of Business.  We are fortunate this year to be using Organization Science's ScholarOne manuscript submission system to manage manuscript submissions and reviews. The web address for submissions is http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/orgsci.  If you do not already have an account you will have to create one. This is a quick and easy process.

    REGIONAL DISPARITY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP: The Role of Entrepreneurship in Differentiated Cultural, Political and/or Economic Landscapes Call-For-Papers Special Issue of the Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship

    Abstract Submission deadline: September 30th 2006

    Full Paper Submission deadline: November 30th 2006

    Entrepreneurship and enterprise development take on different forms of development and are affected by distinctive regional, cultural and political landscapes. This issue focuses on people and places, and their role on enterprise development. As the celebration of entrepreneurship and its purpose in the global competitive arena continues, there is a rising need to understand the role that different cultures, regions and political / economic landscapes have on enterprise development. JSBE is seeking papers that explore cultural and regional characteristics of entrepreneurship, and their impact on enterprise development.

    Understanding the role of regional heterogeneity in entrepreneurship provides promise towards assisting development of underdeveloped regions of the world as well as less developed regions of industrialized countries. Such an examination is bound to bring up questions such as:

    Do regional characteristics play a role in entrepreneurship, or is entrepreneurship a universal concept? How do different countries or regions develop entrepreneurship, and what are some considerations that should be observed? What is the role of indigenous culture in this process?

    This JSBE special issue seeks manuscripts that explore these and other questions related to the role of regional heterogeneity in entrepreneurship and enterprise development.

    Authors should follow the JSBE manuscript format as described in the "Information for Authors" at the end of each issue of JSBE or on the webpage at www.JSBE.com. Authors should submit their abstracts by September 30th 2006 and full papers by November 30th 2006. The journal issue will be blind reviewed as per JSBE review process for special issues.

    Send three copies and one disk of the manuscript via airmail to:

    AOM-PDW: The State and Future of Mass Customization Research and Practice

    Professional Development Workshop at the AOM 2006 Meeting, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>

    Saturday, Aug 12 2006, 2:00PM - 3:30PM at <st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city> Marriott, Room <st1:state w:st="on">Quebec</st1:state> Sponsoring Divisions: <st1:place w:st="on">OM</st1:place>, TIM and BPS.  No pre-registration required.

    While discussed in the literature since more than one decade, broader applications of mass customization can be observed since just a few years.

    In the last years, the concept also became part of several text books on marketing, operations management, and strategic management. In addition, the first business schools are starting to offer dedicated courses on mass customization as part of their MBA and executive education curriculum.

    The objective of the PDW is to discuss a number of propositions about the state and genus of mass customization as a distinctive business model. This will include a review of recent research in the area and a discussion of promising fields for future study. Presenters will cover specific fields of implementing and running a mass customization business like product development for mass customization, customer interaction and product configuration, customized manufacturing, or supply chain management.

    In particular, we want to address the following questions:

    - What is the value of mass customization?

    - What do customers think of mass customization?

    - What are the competencies required for mass customization?

    - How do you master the transition from mass production to mass customization?

    If this is interesting to you, please join us for this PDW. No registration required -- open to all.
