Call for Papers: Organization Science Special Issue

Organization Science – Special Issue on Learning from Rare Events: How
Organisations Learn (or Fail to Learn) from Unusual Experiences

Guest Editors: Joseph Lampel, City University, London; Jamal Shamsie,
Michigan State University; Zur Shapira, New York University.

Organisations that go through rare if not unprecedented events face the
challenge of interpreting and learning from these experiences. Responding
effectively to rare events requires decision makers at different levels to
understand how these events impact their goals and responsibilities. The
challenge is to avoid superficial lessons and when appropriate use these
events as an impetus to pursue fundamental change. The Special Issue
welcomes submissions from researchers who are interested in how
organisations, institutions, communities, and networks can learn from rare
events. With this in mind, we encourage submissions that focus on the
    following issues:

    • How are rare events constituted in the life of organizations,
    institutions, and societies?
    • How do organizations, institutions, and societies detect, interpret, and
    react to rare events?
    • What processes shape learning from rare events?
    • What differences exist in the way that centrally directed organizations
and institutions learn from rare events as opposed to decentralized social
systems such as networks and societies?
    • What are the economic, social, political, and cognitive concomitants of
learning (or not learning) from rare events?
    • What are the challenges of learning from rare as opposed to more
    frequently experienced events?
    • What differences exist between first-hand learning from rare events, as
opposed to learning from observation and historical analysis of such events?
    • How do different actors – governments, communities, firms, networks –
shape the learning agenda in the aftermath of rare events?
    • What are the empirical and methodological problems of studying rare
    events?

To be considered for publication completed manuscripts plus supplementary
files should be submitted electronically via
    http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/orgsci, between February 1, 2007 and
    February 28, 2007.

selects the best dissertation which will be awarded at the Annual Academy of
Management Meetings in Philadelphia. In addition, finalists will be invited
to present their work at a dedicated session during the 2007 Academy of
Management conference. The session will afford high visibility to the
    finalists’ dissertations.

    Submission Requirements:

    • Submit one copy of the first-stage award submission electronically
to TIM-Awards@uvt.nl and to victor.seidel@sbs.ox.ac.uk with the subject “TIM

    7. Up to five keywords that describe the main theme(s) of the dissertation

This should be the only page to include identifying author / school /

The Olympic Spirit in Chinese Management Research
    IACMR 2008
THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR CHINESE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH
    www.iacmr.org and www.iacmr.org.cn
    Guangzhou, China, June 19-22, 2008

    CALL FOR PAPERS
    Submission Deadline: October 15, 2007
You are invited to participate in the third IACMR Biennial Conference to be
held in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China, on June 19-22, 2008. IACMR,
the International Association for Chinese Management Research, is a
professional, academic organization whose primary goal is to promote
scholarly studies of management of organizations in theChinese context.
IACMR is dedicated to serving scholars, students, managers, and consultants
who are interested in advancing knowledge about the management of such
    organizations.

The theme of the conference is "Olympic Spirit in Chinese Management
Research”, as it will be held the same summer as the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games. The Olympic movement has brought along not only splendid sporting
competitions, but also synergy and solidarity among people from all over the
world. The theme provides a broad scope for a variety of research that will
contribute to the increasingly important knowledge of organizations and
management in the Chinese context. We wish to advocate the Olympic spirit in
fostering excellence in management research relating to China. Additionally,
we wish to carry out the Olympic ideal in facilitating cooperation,
coordination, and collaboration among researchers with diverse research
interests and backgrounds. Most importantly, we wish to celebrate what we do
best: advancing management research while solving real-world problems.
Research papers submitted to the conference could include any topics related
to organization and management in the Chinese context (including mainland
China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.) or Chinese organizations
operating globally. We welcome papers and symposia in the disciplinary areas
of Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management, Strategy,
Organization Theory, as well as International and Cross-Cultural Management.
Example topics could include, but are not limited to, innovation and
creativity, entrepreneurship, guanxi and networks, knowledge management and
knowledge transfer, governance, corporate strategies, leadership,
organizational culture, quality management, teams, multinational management,
expatriation, foreign direct investment, globalization, cross-cultural
management, etc. We welcome studies of all types of organizations: state
owned, private, foreign wholly owned, joint ventures, and those
organizations that are undertaking ownership transitions. We accept studies
conducted with various methodologies including survey research, use of
archival data, experimental studies, case studies, qualitative methods and
other creative methodologies for Chinese management research.

    Regular Program
The first three days (June 19-21, 2008) of the conference will be dedicated
to the regular program to include refereed paper presentations, symposia
presentations, and a small number of invited panels.

    Papers
We seek original papers that address the main theme of the conference, as
well as other papers with creative ideas on concepts and methods of
conducting high quality management research in China or Chinese
organizations operating outside of China. Originality means that the paper
has not been presented at any other conferences or published in any academic
journals or books. Accepted papers will be presented at the conference in
either one of two forms: paper presentations or interactive paper sessions,
which will be decided by the Program Committee. Each paper presentation
lasts roughly 25 minutes with 20 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes
for Q&A. In the interactive sessions, the presenters will present their
papers on a poster board and will be given 2 hours for informal discussion
    and interaction with participants.

    Submission Requirements for Papers
    Cover Page
All papers must include a cover page with the following information:
    * Title of the paper
    * For all Authors: full name, affiliation, address, phone number, fax
number, and email address. Add an * beside the name of the corresponding
    (contact) author
    * Content Area: use no more than five words to identify the content area
    * If it is a submission with a solo student author, indicate in bold on the

use of a font of 12 points, no more than 75 characters per line, and no more
than 26 lines per page including headers and footnotes. Papers must be
written in English and follow the current style, including reference format,
of the IACMR journal, Management and Organization Review.

    Confirmation of Attendance
All submissions must include a statement of confirmation that at least one
of the authors will attend the conference if the submitted paper is
accepted. A sample of this statement is “We, authors of submission “title”,
confirm that at least one of the authors will attend the conference and
present the paper if it is accepted”. List all the authors’ names on this
confirmation page. Include this statement as the last page of the paper and

    be reviewed.

    Symposium Proposals
The goal for symposium presentations is to provide a forum for effective
exchange and collective learning that will further our professional
knowledge and enhance our skills. With this in mind, we invite submissions
of innovative, creative, and exciting proposals for symposium presentations.
Accepted symposia will be presented during the regular program of the
conference from June 19 to 21, 2008. A symposium consists of presentations

    * Content Area: Use no more than five words to identify the content area

    Format
    * Cover page (described above)
    * A 5-page introduction of the proposed symposium (i.e., the objectives, the
content, the synergy among the presentations provided by different
presenters, and the significance of the symposium to Chinese management
    research)
    * A 2-3 page abstract from each of the presenters (the focus of the
    presentation) including references
    * The symposium proposal should not exceed 20 double-spaced pages in total
length. This length restriction assumes the use of a font of 12 points, no
more than 75 characters per line, and no more than 26 lines per page
    including headers and footnotes.

    Confirmation of Attendance
All submissions must include a statement to confirm that all presenters of
the symposium will attend the conference if the submitted proposal is
accepted. A sample of this statement is “We confirm that at least one author
of each paper in this symposium “title”, the chair(s) and discussant(s) will
attend the conference and participate in the symposium if it is accepted.”
Then, list the names of all the authors, discussant(s) and chair(s) of the
symposium on this page. This confirmation should appear as the final page of
the proposal and will not count toward the 20-page limit. Proposals without
this confirmation of attendance page will NOT be reviewed.

    Professional Development Workshops
In addition to the paper presentations in the regular program, we also
invite proposals for professional development workshops (PDW), which will be
held on the last day of the conference, June 22, 2008. PDW provide a forum
for researchers to explore a common topic. Its goals are educational and
informational. The PDW are generally conducted in an interactive and
participative format. We encourage submissions of proposals that focus on
contemporary issues relating to Chinese management research, research
methods (e.g., how to conduct quantitative and qualitative research), and
professional development topics (e.g., how to help junior faculty in
conducting and publishing high-impact research). Proposals for workshops
dealing with teaching methods and contents are also appropriate. We also
welcome proposals for caucuses. Caucuses are roundtable discussions which
are designed to provide an informal way for IACMR members who share a
topical interest or a professional concern to find one another and to
    develop a sense of community.

Taken together, we are seeking innovative workshop ideas that would enhance
participants’ interests, understanding, and collaboration in conducting
    Chinese management research.

A professional development workshop proposal should contain the following
    information:
    * Title of the proposed workshop

IACMR’s commitment to integrity, excellence, and quality applies to all its
members and scholars who submit their work to the conference. It prohibits
all forms of academic dishonesty including plagiarism and impropriety with
data collection or analyses. Academic ethics include professionalism in
conference participation. Failure to present a paper on the program reflects
poor professionalism and affects the experience of other conference
participants. We expect all authors will commit to upholding the high
ethical standards of IACMR through professional and ethical conducts when
conducting their research, when writing their papers, and when presenting
their work to colleagues. Please see www.iacmr.org for the full statement on
    “IACMR Commitment to Excellence”.

    Languages of Presentations
This Call for Papers provides the guidance for papers, symposia, and
professional development workshop proposals written in English. A separate
Chinese Call for Papers presents the submission information for Chinese
papers. It will be posted on www.iacmr.org.cn Please use the information
presented in the Chinese Calls for Papers if you intend to submit papers or
    proposals in Chinese.

    Conference Proceeding
We will publish a CD of the Conference Proceedings. The papers in the
regular paper sessions will be published in full, while only the abstracts
of the interactive papers will be included in the Proceedings CD.
Publication in the Proceedings does not preclude the authors from publishing
the paper in journals or books. Authors who wish NOT to include their
accepted papers in the Proceedings should indicate that on the cover page
    when submitting the paper.

    Best Paper Awards.
We will give three Best Paper Awards: micro topics (individual and group
level analysis), macro topics (organization level analysis and strategy
    focus), and a
best student paper. To qualify for the Best Student Paper Award, the student
must be the sole author of the paper. Please indicate clearly on the cover
page that it is a “Student Paper.”

    Submission Limitation.
Each author can only submit a maximum of three papers including papers and
symposia, either as a single author or as a co-author. We will return the
fourth submission to the corresponding author. Participation in the
Professional Development Workshops does not count toward this limitation.

    Submission Deadline.
Submissions of the Papers and Proposals must be received by October 15,
2007. Please submit electronically to the Program Committee Chair Jia Lin
    Xie at xiejl.iacmr08@Rotman.Utoronto.Ca.

    Acknowledgement of Receipt.
We will acknowledge receipt of the submission by e-mail to the contact
    person.

    Judging/Notification.
Papers submitted to the Regular Program will be blind reviewed. Reviewers
will evaluate each paper on the basis of research quality, contribution to
the field of Chinese management, and interest of the topic to IACMR members
    in general.
Notification of acceptance or rejection will be made by February 15, 2008.

    Meeting Venue and Registration.
The conference will be held at the 5-star Garden Hotel of Guangzhou, China.
We expect the hotel rate to be approximately US$90 (per night) and the
conference registration fee to be about US$300 for regular members and $120
for student members, which includes a one-year membership in IACMR and a
    one-year
subscription to the Management and Organizational Review. Conference
scholarships will be available to students on a competitive basis. PRC
member rates are published in the China Forum Call for Papers. Detailed
information on conference registration procedures, fees and hotel
reservations will be available on the Conference Website through
    www.iacmr.org in 2007.
