WORKSHOP BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
Many scholars have lamented how organization theorists, and management scholars more generally, have ceded the role of informing management practice and public policy to other disciplines, such as economics and political science. This is of particular concern to the Academy given that much of individual and societal life is a consequence of peoples' experience in organizations. Likewise, the organizations that individuals create influence society and social life as well.
The purpose of this professional development workshop is to provide an illustration of several cases in which scholars and practitioners have benefited from forming symbiotic relationships. Many scholars have improved both the scholarly contribution of their research and the impact of their research in their relationships with practitioners. Likewise, the practitioners with whom they have worked have gained clarity of purpose and action and effected important organizational outcomes as a result of their relationships with scholars. This PDW will explore several questions, such as: What have practitioners found to be of value in building and maintaining relationships with practitioners? How do scholars build synergies between their relationships with practitioners? How can scholars reach out and communicate with business practitioners and public policy makers?
WORKSHOP FORMAT
1. Panelist presentations on how their relationships with practitioners have improved their scholarship and their scholarship's practical impact; followed by Q&A
2. Round Table Discussions with panelists
3. Plenary Q&A with the panelists
ALL ARE WELCOME!

HICSS conferences are devoted to advances in the information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both theory and practice. Papers may be theoretical, conceptual, tutorial or descriptive in nature. Submissions undergo a double-blind peer referee process and those selected for presentation will be published in the Conference Proceedings.
Additional detail may be found on HICSS primary web site:

This mini-track addresses issues related to anticipating, detecting, mitigating and preventing computer-based threats and attacks. The pervasiveness of computer networks in our economic system has increased our vulnerability. In response, organizations have increased the attention paid to computer-based threats to their information, systems, and processes. Governments have also recognized information security as a critical component of our national and international infrastructures, as well as its integral role for financial reporting and regulation. These constituencies are combining technical, managerial, forensics, regulation, law enforcement, and social engineering to combat a difficult and growing problem. In addition, there has been increasing concern about emergent risks that occur because of computer-enabled automation. These risks represent changes to the likelihood of operational failure from intentional changes in operations, and may result in malicious attack or inadvertent disruption. An additional perspective is the trend toward eRemote and eOperations, implying that compromises of information security might threaten Health, Safety and Environment.
There is a need to develop and share research about this work: What are organizations doing, what are they not doing, what are the results, and why these outcomes occur. This mini-track follows a successful mini-track program at HICSS-39, and it provides IS/IT researchers a collaborative forum to share their research and insights. We hope to attract scholars from a wide set of disciplines to build theory, exchange insights, and improve research techniques.
Papers that address improving the security, reliability or survivability of computer-reliant organizations from these threats through technical or behavioral change are encouraged. Applications of simulation studies, case-based research, and other quantitative and qualitative methods are welcome.
Some possible topics include, but are not limited to:
· Attack prevention, detection and response
· Analysis of vulnerabilities
· Compliance with security measures
· Identifying modes of misuse
· Applications of access policies
· Managerial and financial aspects of cyber-attacks
· Analysis of known and unknown modes of attack
· Separating anomalous from routine behavior
· Adapting outsider-based threat prevention to insider risks
· Modeling risks and approaches to mitigation, reliability, survivability and business continuity
· Teaching and training security and business managers about the
risks of cyber-threats to their organization
· Threats to Health, Safety and Environment in eRemote/eOperations

2006 INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition: Call for Submissions
Submission Deadline: August 31, 2006
We invite you to submit your dissertation proposal to the INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition. Now in its 15th year, this competition is one of the most prestigious available to doctoral students studying organizations. Finalists will present their dissertation proposals in a workshop on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the Fall INFORMS Conference held in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Pittsburgh</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">PA.</st1:state></st1:place> During the workshop finalists will receive detailed feedback from a panel of respected organizational scholars who act as final judges for the competition. The all-day workshop also provides a good opportunity to interact with a small group of future colleagues. At the workshop, the judges will award a first and second prize. The First Prize winner receives a free trip to the Organization Science Winter Conference (registration, lodging, and $500 toward airfare and expenses). Second prize is a $250 honorarium.
To be eligible, students must defend their dissertation proposal by August 31, 2006, but have not defended their dissertation by that date. We encourage all eligible doctoral students who are studying topics related to organization science to apply. Proposals addressing issues related to any aspect of organization theory, organizational behavior, strategy or entrepreneurship are welcome.
The dissertation proposals will be judged based on soundness of theory, methodological rigor, and contribution to the field of organization science. In keeping with the mission of the INFORMS College on Organization Science, boldness and innovation will be important criteria in the judging process.
Applications must be received by August 31, 2006. Proposals may be no longer than 15 double-spaced pages in 12-point Times font. Up to 7 additional pages containing references and exhibits may be included. In addition to the proposal, each application must include a nomination letter from the applicant's advisor certifying that the student has advanced to candidacy and is likely to complete their dissertation by December 31, 2007 – we do not need a detailed recommendation letter.
The competition is being coordinated this year by Tim Pollock of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Penn</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype></st1:place>'s Smeal College of Business. We are fortunate this year to be using Organization Science's ScholarOne manuscript submission system to manage manuscript submissions and reviews. The web address for submissions is http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/orgsci. If you do not already have an account you will have to create one. This is a quick and easy process.
Please follow Organization Science's instructions for submitting your proposal. A couple of important things to note:
- Your manuscript type is PROPOSAL
- Under section 2, Attributes, please select a few key words to aid in assigning reviewers
- Under Section 4, Reviewers and Editors, do not recommend any reviewers. However, you should indicate Tim Pollock as your preferred SENIOR EDITOR.
- Under section 5, Details and Comments, Paste your cover letter into the window and use the browse attachment function to attach your COVER PAGE as well as YOUR ADVISOR'S NOMINATION LETTER
- Under section 6, Upload Files, upload a copy of your proposal WITHOUT ITS COVER PAGE OR OTHER IDENTIFYING INFORMATION. The first page should include only your dissertation title and abstract.
Please direct any inquiries to:

"COGNITION IN THE ROUGH" 2006
Are you working on cognition-related research? Would you like to discuss your work with major scholars in the field?
Now is the time to prepare for the 9th annual "COGNITION IN THE ROUGH" workshop to be held at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place> this August.
The Cognition in the Rough workshop (CIR) provides an excellent opportunity to discuss your research in an informal, collegial roundtable setting. Each roundtable will have 2-3 scholars and 2-3 researchers, allowing plenty of time for discussion. Regardless of whether you are a more senior or more junior scholar, this workshop offers you an invaluable opportunity to receive detailed feedback from scholars who are often editors or on the editorial board of top journals.
In particular, many past CIR participants have emphasized how much they have benefited from their participation in the workshop in terms of developing their theoretical models and their planned methodology. This feedback has been instrumental in helping them further develop and polish their research for publication in top academic journals.
Whether this is your first major research project or your fiftieth, this is a chance you won't want to miss!
We are very pleased that the following scholars agreed to participate:
Fran Ackermann, Elena Antonlopoulou, Neal Ashkanasy, Janet Dukerich, Colin Eden, Dov Eden, Marlene Fiol, Peer Fiss, Raghu Garud, Gerard Hodgkinson, Susan Houghton, George Huber, Lynn Isabella, Chet Miller, Frances Milliken, Ronda Rheger, Mary Waller.
Sponsored by the Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division at the annual <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Meeting</st1:placename> in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>, the workshop will be held on Sunday, August 13th from 8:30 AM - 12 PM.

CALL for chapter proposals for Handbook of 21st Century Management (Sage, 2008)
I previously posted a request for issues for a book proposal to TIM. This worked out well and now I am the editor of the Handbook of 21st Century Management (Sage, 2008).
The Handbook of 21st Century Management will provide clear and useful discussion of 100 of the key issues and topics that managers are confronting in the 21st century by scholars from around the world. The structure of discourse for each issue and important associated perspectives and research will be concisely and meaningfully presented. New technologies, globalization and associated ethical implications frame many of these issues. Cutting-edge and unsettled topics in human resource management, strategic management, entrepreneurship, operations management, business and society, management information systems, leadership, international management, organizational culture, diversity management, managing in the post-911 world, not-for-profit management, healthcare management, educational administration, public administration and green management are introduced and discussed. Key bibliographic leads for those interested in further researching an issue are provided.
Sage has a series of such "Handbook of 21st Century" books coming out (sociology, psychology, communication etc.) The concept is that a management student will go to the reference desk in the library and say that he/she is looking for term paper topic and structure in say human resource management. Then, the reference librarian would guide the student over to the Handbook of 21st Century Management. It will have 100 chapters of 7000-8000 words each (10 pages) with two additional pages or so of bibliography.
I have 20 chapters signed on so far with chapter authors from a diverse group of universities including <st1:city w:st="on">Swarthmore</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">Texas</st1:state> Tech, Helsinki University of Technology, Louisiana, <st1:state w:st="on">Texas</st1:state>, <st1:placename w:st="on">Harvard</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype>, <st1:placename w:st="on">Norwegian</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype> of Economics and Business Administration, Duke, Monash, <st1:placename w:st="on">San Diego</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype>, <st1:city w:st="on">Sabanci</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">Missouri</st1:state>, Technion, Bradford, University of the West Indies, Otago and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Victoria</st1:state></st1:place>. I already have almost 100 issue ideas but hope to get more and then go with the best ones. One I like but do not have any author for is "Poverty alleviation as a component of business strategy". I saw an article on that but have not been able to recruit the authors so I am looking for someone else to do it. Another topic I don't have an author for is "Integrating many more of the disabled into business through new technologies."
If you have an interesting, future-oriented, management issue that you would like to author a chapter on please send me a brief proposal with a list of related publications that you have authored.
