General Announcements:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you all had a safe and happy 4th of July. Just a gentle reminder about the timing of the listserv digests for the TIM Division. In an effort to minimize e-mail clutter from this list, the TIM division has decided to send out a digest of all announcements instead of simply allowing all postings to go out. As the manager of the list, I compile all announcements and submit a single digest once there are a few announcements to include. As a result, the list generally goes out every couple of weeks. I attempt to move the dates around depending on deadlines to ensure that all deadlines get posted to the list with plenty of advance notice, but this is where I also need your help. Please be sure to send all time sensitive announcements to the list well in advance of any deadline, not simply a day or two in advance. If your announcement is simply a reminder of a previous post, please note it in the heading.
Thank you for your help.

REMINDER: PDW on using self-leadership during the dissertation process
The Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Divisions will be sponsoring a PDW on "Learning to Use Self-Leadership during the Dissertation Process" at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename> in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>. This PDW will take place on Sunday, August 13, from 8:00-9:50 am in the Singapore Room at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Self-leadership, based on social cognitive and intrinsic motivation theory, can help a person motivate him or herself to achieve personal goals. Self-leadership is likely to be of great assistance to doctoral students currently working on a dissertation. The principles of self-leadership can help doctoral students overcome the variety of obstacles that make finishing a dissertation such a difficult and trying process. Participants will be exposed to a variety of techniques that are applicable not only in managing the dissertation process, but also in other aspects of an academic career.
The PDW will comprise an interactive session that includes presentations from some of the panelists, overall group discussion, and small group discussions. The presentations will introduce participants to self-leadership, while the group discussions will be particularly useful in getting valuable advice on the specific issues participants are facing. In the small group discussions, students will be encouraged to share the hurdles they are facing and will hopefully leave the session armed with a variety of strategies to use that will assist them in completing their dissertations.
Panelists/presenters for the PDW include:
Charles C. Manz (<st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Massachusetts</st1:placename> at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Amherst</st1:city></st1:place>)
Christopher Neck (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Virginia</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Tech</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype></st1:place>)

Interested doctoral students are encouraged to e-mail the organizer, Kevin Henderson (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">U.</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Arkansas</st1:placename></st1:place>), at khenderson@walton.uark.edu in order to pre-register. Please include a recent CV with the email and a note about any specific problems you are facing or encountering with respect to the dissertation process. This PDW is likely to be of particular interest to doctoral students who have just begun to work on their dissertations, as well as those who are likely to soon start. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the undersigned! Thank you for your time and we hope to see you in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place>!

WORKSHOP GOALS
· To help researchers at all career stages who are currently examining the development and exploitation of firm specific sources of advantage.
· To aid researcher and scholars in further developing working papers, planned projects, and other works-in-progress into publishable articles, through the friendly exchange of ideas, constructive feedback and critique.
· To foster the exchange and sharing of ideas, projects, and data among geographically dispersed researchers who might otherwise have no opportunity to interact.
· To promote the development of a mutual-support network for researchers interested in different aspects of capabilities.
WORKSHOP APPROACH
Over the last few years, a promising convergence of theoretical perspectives has emerged in the field of strategy. In contrast to prior efforts that tightly mapped different topics to different theoretical perspectives (e.g., issues of firm boundaries were analyzed using TCE; issues of competitive advantage were considered using the RBV; and issues of change and capability adaptation through evolutionary approaches and the KBV), there has recently been a marked increase in research that cuts across such boundaries. Recent contributions have considered questions such as:
· Whether and to what extent do transaction costs and/or sources of firm-specific heterogeneity lead managers to pick one governance form over another?
· What is the influence of governance choice on the subsequent development of firm capabilities? · How do environmental and firm-specific factors affect the manner in which industries shift from integration to disintegration and back?
· How do firms' strategies and prospects for success evolve over time in an industry? This PDW intends to build on this budding research by developing a forum in which authors with similar interests meet and discuss related questions. We particularly encourage submissions on the following topics:
· How do resources and capabilities influence outsourcing decisions and subsequent performance?
· What firm- and industry-level factors influence the evolution of industry structure (e.g, vertical disintegration or reintegration)?
· What factors affect the allocation of profits along the value chain and across stakeholders?
· How does firm and industry organization (in particular, boundaries within and between organizations) affect the identification of valuable opportunities, and how does it impact competitive dynamics?
Each work-in-progress paper will be grouped with others that are "similar" in either topic or methodology. Prior to the workshop, participants in each group will prepare written comments and feedback on the other works- in-progress in their group. Individual groups will exchange feedback during the workshop, with each group's discussion being facilitated by an experienced discussant, familiar with the topic or method in question.
Submission Requirements
· In order to participate, individuals must submit one 10 to 25 page manuscript by June 30, 2006 to Leiblein_1@cob.osu.edu.
· Submissions should be targeted to research journals, but not under advanced review.
· Submissions should include at least three key words that describe the contribution of the paper. · Submission indicates permission to distribute and post the submitted paper to the workshop web page which will be located at http://fisher.osu.edu/~leiblein_1/Acad/acad06pdw.htm.
Upon receipt of all the papers, the workshop organizers will group papers with others that are similar in topic and/or methodology and post them to the conference webpage. Prior to the workshop, participants in each group will prepare written comments and feedback on the other works-in-progress in their group. Individual groups will exchange feedback during the workshop, with each group's discussion being facilitated by an experienced discussion facilitator who is familiar with the topic or method in question.

New Perspectives on Sourcing Decisions: Theory, Practice, and Future Research
Associate Editor Team

G. Tomas M. Hult, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Michigan</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype></st1:place>
Since the seminal work on the "make-versus-buy" decision, academics and industry practitioners continue to be challenged by the complexity and strategic importance of sourcing decisions. In almost every industry, new forms of sourcing arrangements are emerging, including off-shoring, back-sourcing, and co-sourcing, to name a few. These new forms are particularly evident in the information technology and service industries, where the availability of world-class suppliers continues to expand and companies learn of successful outsourcing relationships leading to reduced costs and improved quality.
Managers frequently make decisions about whether to pursue a new type of sourcing arrangement, how to manage and strengthen their existing sourcing arrangements, and if and when to change their sourcing decisions to take advantage of new opportunities. Other managers engage in less-structured sourcing arrangements involving experimentation and learning about different types of relationships and decision making processes across the extended enterprises.
This Special Topic Forum (STF) focuses on advancing decision making research on sourcing with a focus on developing theory, understanding practice, and identifying future research directions. The STF encourages research examining different types of decision problems ranging from strategic to operational that occur in various forms including network, dyad, and the organization. Given the interdisciplinary nature of Decision Sciences, the Associate Editor Team has leading expertise in both information technology and manufacturing. It is the goal of this STF to foster interdisciplinary knowledge, as past research has tended to draw from similar theoretical lenses.
Building on the refocused editorial mission of Decision Sciences, this STF seeks manuscripts utilizing diverse research approaches such as theoretical, empirical, and analytical research methods. Articles published in this STF must meet Decision Sciences' high standards of research rigor and originality, while embracing managerial relevance, not only in the research problem studied, but also in their impact on enhanced decision making. STFs consist of a collection of three to five articles that are published in a regular issue along with other peer-reviewed articles.
Topics of Interest include, but are not limited to:
The interplay between environmental forces, industry forces, strategy factors, and organizational factors to shape strategic and tactical sourcing decisions.
The application of organization theory to the study of sourcing. What unique aspects of a particular theory or theories explain issues within the domain of sourcing?
What are the implications of the "knowledge economy" on decision-making in sourcing and the practice of strategic sourcing?
Decision-making regarding domestic sourcing, international sourcing, and global sourcing (e.g., outsourcing, off-shoring, offshore outsourcing, back-sourcing, and co-sourcing, among others).
Decision-making related to component sourcing (i.e., management of a large number of component parts and suppliers) and system sourcing (i.e., management of a smaller number of critical suppliers in strategic relationships).
Organizational consequences of sourcing decisions: a balanced view that incorporates both short- and long-term, positive and negative firm performance and effectiveness.
Decision-making regarding sourcing changes and exit decisions (e.g., major contract renegotiation / restructuring, early termination, re-insourcing, change of vendors, etc.).
Sourcing from the vendor perspective: strategic positioning, capabilities required, value propositions of different services, management of service deliveries.
Sourcing from offshore: challenges in new and global forms of sourcing arrangements (e.g., international technology partnerships, joint ventures, alliances, and equity deals).
All submissions must adhere to the format and style guidelines of the Decision Sciences Journal. Manuscripts will be evaluated on the same criteria as regular manuscripts. The evaluation process will be similar to regular paper submissions, except the Associate Editors assigned to the manuscript will be part of the STF Editorial Team. Manuscript preparation and submission instructions can be found on journal's web site at https://wpcarey.asu.edu/dsjOnline/index.cfm. In the cover letter, please indicate that your submission is for the Sourcing Special Topic Forum.
Deadline for Submissions: December 1, 2006.
Best regards,
Jeanne Elliott (on behalf of the Associate Editors)

The commercialization of knowledge-research and technology-is evolving into an ecology of complex organizational interactions, including processes encompassing both private and public institutions. Research joint ventures, strategic alliances, and licensing agreements involving universities and firms, as well as the formation of start-up companies linked to science and technology, embody this trend. We have also witnessed the emergence of new organizational forms to promote research and technology commercialization, such as technology transfer offices, science parks, incubators, and industry-university cooperative research centers. These developments have critical managerial and policy implications. The proposed special issue will contain papers that address these issues.
Sample research questions include, but are not limited to:
. How are discoveries developed and transferred across organizations? How do new discoveries made by one institution fill knowledge gaps in another?
. Which knowledge-based factors are central to the processes of creation and appropriation of discoveries? Do appropriation, joint development and commercialization of discoveries interact with regional agglomeration, clustering, or social embeddedness?
. How do different environments affect the transfer of proprietary technologies from one organization to another? What is the relative importance of different aspects of knowledge (or their absence) on interactive learning?
. What are the political and cultural implications of appropriation, transfer, and commercialization of discoveries?
. What is the role of risk and learning in appropriation, transfer, and commercialization of discoveries? How do individuals, groups, and organizations deal with failure in order to learn and to be more successful in future commercialization? When is appropriation, transfer, or commercialization of discoveries desirable and when does it lead to diminishing returns or unintended harm?
Manuscripts must be received by February 1, 2007. Authors should prepare manuscripts in accordance with the journal's guidelines. Authors whose papers receive a revise and re-submit will be invited to a special developmental workshop in late September 2007. All submissions will be blind-reviewed, using JMS's normal review process and selection criteria.
Please submit manuscripts in a Word-compatible format electronically to gmarkman@terry.uga.edu, sapie001@umn.edu, donald.siegel@ucr.edu, or mike.wright@nottingham.ac.uk. Questions may be addressed to any of the special issue editors.

Book Announcements:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
I am writing to announce the publication of a new book called "The Dynamics of Technology for Social Change" by social entrepreneur Jonathan Peizer.
The book offers a blueprint for venture philanthropists, academics, social entrepreneurs, nonprofits and government agencies seeking to improve people's lives through technology.
In this new book, author Jonathan Peizer chronicles the venture philanthropy projects that took him to more than 30 countries in a seven-year period as director of the Soros Foundation's Internet program. Peizer helped implement technology for the sake of social change in tumultuous times for Europe, <st1:place w:st="on">Asia</st1:place> and other parts of the world at a time when the use of the Internet for these purposes and the concept of venture philanthropy were in their infancy.
Jonathan Peizer lectures frequently on this subject and is available for speaking engagements in the coming months.
If you would like a review copy of "The Dynamics of Technology for Social Change" or if you would like to invite Mr. Peizer to speak to members of your organization, please let me know. Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Eileen Garvin

Social entrepreneur offers blueprint
for social change through IT
As the Internet boom was gaining momentum in boardrooms across the United States, an entirely different technology revolution was quietly taking place on the other side of the world: The "venture philanthropy" movement supported social change through technology in Eastern European countries and others emerging from generations of authoritarian rule.
Author Jonathan Peizer chronicles his years on the front lines of that revolution in his new book "The Dynamics of Technology for Social Change." With this book, Peizer offers a blueprint for philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, corporate responsibility programs and academics trying to enact social change through Internet Communications Technology.
In 1993, Peizer joined philanthropist George Soros' foundation to create an Internet program for the foundation's Open Society Institute. Over the next seven years, Peizer helped launch 250 projects in more than 30 countries with the goal of facilitating social change and sustainable economic development through technology.
Using his firsthand experience, Peizer offers strategies for using ICT to facilitate change in NGOs, understanding the culture of nonprofits, and promoting relationships between nonprofits, foundations, government entities and private companies to achieve a mutual mission. "The Dynamics of Technology for Social Change" is an important resource for understanding program sustainability, implementation and evaluation, as well as the unique challenges facing open source methodology in the nonprofit environment and the importance of donor support conferences.
Peizer catalogs the history of venture philanthropy projects - from <st1:country-region w:st="on">Estonia</st1:country-region> to <st1:country-region w:st="on">Albania</st1:country-region>, from the <st1:country-region w:st="on">Czech Republic</st1:country-region> to <st1:country-region w:st="on">Azerbaijan</st1:country-region>, and from <st1:country-region w:st="on">Mongolia</st1:country-region> to <st1:country-region w:st="on">South Africa</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Haiti</st1:country-region></st1:place> - along with their unique challenges, including civil war, political upheaval and even the threat of NATO bombings.
While Americans were just starting to use ponderous dial-up modem service, Peizer was helping implement alternative Internet service using satellites, spread-spectrum radio modems, ham radios, cable TV, microwaves and asynchronous satellite technology for nonprofits around the globe.
With more than 20 years of experience in ICT consulting, Peizer directed the Internet program for the Soros Foundation's Open Society Network from 1993 to 2000 and continued to support and develop projects promoting social change through technology as its Chief Technology Officer from 2001 through 2005. He continues his work in the field of venture philanthropy as founder of Internaut Consulting, Greentealovers.com and capaciteria.org.
