The ENT Division cordially invites your members to the ENT Division Social at the AOM annual meeting in Atlanta. The event will take place on Saturday, August 12, 2006, 6 pm – 9 pm, at the Fox Theatre. We are asking for your help to distribute the following announcement to your members. We would love to see y'all there!

    Dear Colleagues:

    You are invited!

This year, you are invited to help the Entrepreneurship Division support the Academy's mission to: "Provide a supportive and dynamic community" for all its members.

Our theme for the Entrepreneurship Division Social at the annual meeting in Atlanta, is CROSSING BRIDGES. Over the years we have, together, developed cross-divisional bridges of collegiality. We now suggest that at the Atlanta Meeting you join us at the fabulous Fox Theatre for an elegant Southern Dinner, great hospitality, and fun entertainment.

    Here's how it works:

All you need to do is to fill out the form below; and (only) FAX OR MAIL as directed.

    Here are the details:

    1. Tickets will be $65.00 each in advance (through my office at Texas Tech), $85.00 after July 14th, and $100.00 at the door ONLY IF AVAILABLE. (These low prices are possible through the generosity of a group of dedicated sponsors, who have responded to the vision of "crossing bridges" to significantly lower the cost to all who attend.) At present sponsorship levels, we have approximately 100 subsidized GUEST tickets available, so please REGISTER NOW!

(Please Note: A subsidized ticket DOES NOT MEAN FREE. The cost of the evening is $115.00+ per person, and each $65.00 ticket is "subsidized" by $50.00 allocated through the generosity of our sponsors.)

    PDW DESCRIPTION

Scholars working in organizational ecology have begun to pay increasing attention to the phenomena of technology and innovation. Although such research has been attune to past work in the management of innovation, ecological research has brought a fresh perspective to this area of research. Ecological research on technology and innovation has included the role of organizational inertia and firm aging on innovation, the important distinction between the content and process of technological change, Red Queen dynamics of competition, and new perspectives on product dynamics. The empirical context for this research tradition has tended to be single-industry studies over long time-periods (often the entire history of a given industry).

    WORKSHOP APPROACH

This PDW builds on this budding research by examining such phenomena as why are some firms more innovative than others, how innovation affects the life chances of firms, how innovative products behave on the market, the consequences of technological competition for industry structure, and vice-versa, among other topics.

The PDW will encourage research from emerging and established scholars alike, with an eye on developing papers on these topics. The PDW will open with a brief introduction by leading figures in the field in terms of research accomplishments to date and future opportunities. Paper presentations and discussion will follow. The PDW intends to provide feedback on presented papers and highlight important issues for future research.

    MORE INFORMATION

Although pre-registration is encouraged, attendance is open. After the participants present their papers, a discussant will review the papers. The discussion will then be open to the audience. We hope this will be a productive forum to discuss the intersection of organizational ecology and research on technology and innovation, including an assessment of past work and an eye toward future work. Please contact Olga Khessina (omk2@georgetown.edu)or Jonathan Jaffee (jaffee@usc.edu) if you have any additional questions.

    DESIGN-INSPIRED INNOVATION

by James Utterback (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA), Bengt-Arne Vedin, Sten Ekman (Mälardalen University, Sweden), Eduardo Alvarez (VIGIX, Inc.), Susan Walsh Sanderson (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA), Bruce Tether (University of Manchester, UK) & Roberto Verganti (Politecnico di Milano, Italy)

When an innovation is inspired by design, it transcends technology and utility. The design delights the user, seamlessly integrating the physical object, a service, and its use into something whole. A design-inspired innovation is so simple that it becomes an extension of the user. It creates meaning and a new language.

Design-Inspired Innovation takes a unique look at the intersection between design and innovation, and explores the novel ways in which designers are contributing to the development of products and services. The book's scope is international, with emphasis on design activities in Boston, England, Sweden, and Milan. Through a rich variety of cases and cultural prisms, the book extends the traditional design viewpoint and stretches the context of industrial design to question - and answer - what design is really all about. It gives readers tools for inspiration, and shows how design can change language and even create human possibilities.

Contents: The Design Path to Innovation; Creating Design Classics; Integrating Function and Design; Design Firms in Innovation; The Work of Designers; The Design Discourse; Broadening Human Possibilities Through Design; Leadership Through Design.

Readership: Faculty and students in art, media, innovation studies in management and engineering; practitioners in design and innovation firms and design centers.
