- Symposia and Other Annual Meeting Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear all:
I would like to draw your attention to the following session Deepak Somaya and I have organized for AOM 2007 annual meetings in Philadelphia. Please note that no pre-registration is required - just show up if you are interested!
AOM Session: Using Patent Data for Research
Program Session #: 231
Sponsors: TIM, BPS
Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 4 2007 2:40PM - 5:00PM at Philadelphia Marriott in Room 301
Organizer: Deepak Somaya; U. of Maryland, College Park;
Organizer: Jasjit Singh; INSEAD;
Presenter: Jeffrey Furman; Boston U.;
Presenter: David Hsu; Wharton School;
Presenter: Bhaven Sampat; Columbia U.;
Discussant: Scott Stern; Northwestern U.;
Presenter: Lee Fleming; Harvard U.;
This PDW focuses on the use of patent data for empirical management research. The primary goals of the PDW are to provide an introduction for researchers new to the area, balanced with a scholarly discussion of current critical issues for more experienced colleagues. This year, one of our secondary goals is to foster a conversation between scholars using patent data in the knowledge/ innovation and strategy/appropriability streams of management research, respectively. The co-chairs will begin the PDW with an overview of the types of data used in patent analysis, and each presenter will explore state-of-the art uses of patent data and related methodological issues: specifically, individual inventors’ movement and networks (Fleming), identification of knowledge flows (Furman), measuring innovation and entrepreneurship (Hsu), and patent application and prosecution history data (Sampat). The discussant (Stern) will share his view of the directions this field is progressing in, and open the floor to discussion. This PDW seeks to continue the tradition of past AOM patent data management workshops, organized by among others Rosemarie Ziedonis (2003), Michelle Gittelman (2004), Graham and Reitzig (2005) and Lowe and Veloso (2006).

Decision Sciences Special Topic Forum - Advancing Decision Making in Service Innovation
Associate Editor Team
Tor W. Andreassen, Norwegian School of Management
James C. Spohrer, IBM Almaden Research Center
Rohit Verma, Cornell University
While academic scholars have made great strides in the past decade to discover, evaluate, and model decisions in the services economy, there is still much work to be done in rigorously developing the “science” of services. Over the past decade, Decision Sciences has taken a leading role in publishing interdisciplinary services research and will continue to do so in the near future. Most recently, Decision Sciences (Smith-Daniels, 2007) published the special topic forum “The Next Frontier in Services Research” to stimulate forward-thinking research related to designing and managing services in today’s rapidly changing environment. To continue the advancement of the services research agenda, Decision Sciences announces the special topic forum, “Advancing Decision Making in Service Innovation.” Following the spirit of IBM and other corporate initiatives (e.g., Spohrer, et al. 2007; Jana, 2007), Decision Sciences seeks papers that promote a transdisciplinary discourse by bringing together academics from information technology, operations management, marketing, human resource management, business strategy, management sciences, and social and cognitive sciences.
Service innovation promotes the design of new services and enhancements in service delivery systems. This special topic forum explores service innovation decision making ranging from strategic to operational decision problems involving inter-organizational, group-based, and technology-enabled aspects. Papers published in this special topic forum should address a specific decision problem, provide clear managerial insights that improve decision making, and/or contribute to an emerging theory of service innovation.
Building on the refocused editorial mission of Decision Sciences, this STF seeks manuscripts utilizing diverse research approaches such as theoretical, empirical, and analytical research methods. Articles published in this STF must meet Decision Sciences’ high standards of research rigor and originality, while embracing managerial relevance, not only in the research problem studied, but also in their impact on enhanced decision making.
Topics of Interest include, but are not limited to:
* Taxonomies of service innovation decisions
* B2B service innovation collaborative decision models
* New service development models and decision making phases
* Models for customer and supplier involvement in the service-innovation decision making process.
* New goods vs. new service innovation and service innovation within the manufacturing context
* Decision support tools and techniques for assessing service innovation
* Tradeoffs and tensions within and between functional areas related to new service innovation
* Decision making related to upstream and downstream service innovation.
All submissions must adhere to the format and style guidelines of the Decision Sciences Journal. Manuscripts will be evaluated on the same criteria as regular manuscripts, except greater emphasis will be placed on the transdisciplinary impact of the research. The evaluation process will be similar to regular paper submissions, except the Associate Editors assigned to the manuscript will be part of the STF Editorial Team. Manuscript preparation and submission instructions can be found on journal’s web site at
https://wpcarey.asu.edu/DSJOnline/Help/Author/author_Guidelines.cfm . In the cover letter, please indicate that your submission is for the Services Special Topic Forum regarding Advancing Decision Making in Service Innovation.
Submission Period: Manuscripts for this special topics forum may be submitted between August 1st and October 31st 2007. Early submission is encouraged, but not prior to the starting date of August 1.

Call for Papers - International Journal of Technology Management (IJTM) Special Issue on: "Broadening the Scope of Open Innovation"
Deadline: 1 October 2007
Guest Editors:
Oliver Gassmann, University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland Wim Vanhaverbeke, Hasselt University & Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands Vareska van de Vrande, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands
Henry Chesbrough coined the term 'Open Innovation' to indicate how large companies combine externally and internally developed technologies in a flexible way to develop new businesses. Since then, there has been an increased awareness and interest of both practitioners and researchers into the concept of Open Innovation.
Open Innovation was originally applied to external corporate venturing, new business development, spin-ins and spin-offs, but it has many other potential application fields. Scholars are nowadays broadening the scope and deepening our understanding of Open Innovation. There is a growing need integrate Open Innovation into the mainstream management literature and to link it to concepts such as absorptive capacity, dynamic capabilities, competence building, etc. The growing range of application fields requires an integrative framework to link these different areas to each other.
Finally, Open Innovation management has proven to be difficult as most companies are not experienced with the management of external relationships. Despite the growing efforts to explore Open Innovation practices and their impact on firms' innovation performance, many managerial questions remain unanswered.
This special issue aims to stimulate the ongoing debate on Open Innovation and advance our understanding of open innovation as a field of research. Submissions are invited from both practitioners and management researchers and they may be purely theoretical or based on empirical research.
Subject Coverage
Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* The organisation of open innovation practices inside the firm
* What are the processes and mechanisms through which internal innovation is commercialised outside the firm?
* How do external sources of innovation enter the firm?
* The added-value of open innovation practices for all parties involved
* How is cooperation with universities, research institutes, competitors, and/or consumers organised?
* Open source as an open innovation strategy
* IP management in a world of open innovation
* How do IP rights affect open innovation practices?
* What is the role of the government in stimulating open innovation?
* How much open innovation vs. closed innovation does a company need?
* Industry and product specifics on open innovation impact
* Potentials of inter-organisational networks for open innovation
* Innovation controlling of open innovation activities (e.g. key performance indicators, controlling instruments)
* Company's capabilities to profit from open innovation
* How to link open innovation to capability building and corporate strategy processes?
* How to create and capture value in Open Innovation?
* What is the role of business models, organisation structure and corporate culture in developing efficient innovation practices?

The HCTM Hospital of the Future Conferences - 6th International Conference on the Management of Healthcare and Medical Technology.
Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy
3-5 October, 2007
www.sssup.it/HCTMconference2007
CALL FOR PAPERS
* Conference Background
Over the years HCTM conferences have examined the returns and benefits of medical technologies, the application and organisational aspects of creating and implementing cutting-edge technologies, the trends and the advances made in the field of technology and its management in healthcare delivery, and the challenges for the future.
The 2007 conference seeks to encourage an international and multidisciplinary debate on the “responsibility and compliance in the management and innova¬tion of healthcare technologies in an integrated healthcare system”. As this issue is complex and multifaceted, several theories, approaches, perspectives and dialogues are required to achieve a common understanding necessary to define the state of the art.
Papers are expected to deal with the identification and analysis of the dif¬ferent roles and contributions, and therefore with the responsibilities of the different actors involved in the development, adoption and management of cost-effective and appropriate healthcare technologies, i.e. manufacturers, sales agencies, scholars, researchers, regulators, payers (including insurers), managers (including risk managers), and professionals.
* Conference Theme and Sections
The theme for the 6th International Conference on the Management of Healthcare and Medical Technology is “Towards responsibility and compliance in the innovation and management of healthcare technologies: international perspectives and comparative experiences”. The conference will explore the issue of responsibility in each phase of the healthcare technology life cycle:
Section 1 - Healthcare technology development: concept generation of inno¬vative healthcare technology; ethical issues concerning innovative healthcare technology; projected future research direction needs; technology-driven in¬novations versus health need-driven innovations; uptake and safe diffusion of new medical technologies/ devices, constructive health technology assess¬ment; product life cycle management models for healthcare technology.
Section 2 - Healthcare technology compliance and regulation: commercial¬ization authorization; liability and insurance issues in healthcare technology; Health Technology Assessment and reimbursement decisions; trends, advanc¬es, and challenges of technology in healthcare and the social policy issues of healthcare delivery: affordability, access, availability; compliance and ethical implications; trends and advances in technology for healthcare delivery and the issue of quality of care; the role of government and its influence on trends, advances, challenges and future research in technology for healthcare delivery.
Section 3 – Healthcare technology adoption by the healthcare organization: hospital based-Health Technology Assessment; investment planning and programming; business planning:
Section 4 - Healthcare technology management by the healthcare organiza¬tion: organizational impacts, change management; business process re-engineering; technology overlapping; development of sound information systems; performance measurement; audit; maintenance; safety and replacement plans; anonymous incident reporting systems;
Section 5 - Contributions from PhD students are welcome and encouraged. One section of the Conference is allocated to presentations by PhD students on the subject matter of their doctoral thesis (at all stages of preparation). The students presenting their work will thus have the opportunity to explain and defend their research questions, the investigative approach and meth¬odology they have chosen to test their hypotheses to a qualified audience of experts, thus benefitting from useful suggestions and feedback on their work. Alternatively, PhD students whose research project is in an advanced stage can decide to present the outcome of their research in one of the above mentioned sections.
For all sections papers dealing with benchmarking across countries, regions and types of providers and payer systems are especially welcome.
* Who should attend?
The conference is of interest to a variety of groups and professionals within the larger industry of healthcare and healthcare delivery: medical and health-care practitioners, researchers, academics, manufacturers, jurists, regulators, and consultants involved in all the phases of development, delivery, evalu¬ation, risk management, research or teaching of healthcare services and of healthcare technologies management. Included in this list, are also the manufacturers of medical instruments and healthcare equipment/ devices; pharmaceutical companies; biotechnology companies; providers of information and telecommunication technology for healthcare delivery; regulatory agencies; medical and healthcare professional groups and associations; insurance and other financial companies involved in healthcare; and faculties and students involved in programs dealing with healthcare management, technology, policy, strategy, economics, and ethics. All are invited to submit papers relevant to the conference theme, sections and topics described above.

Research Discussions:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Advanced Technology Program (ATP), the Kauffman Foundation and the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago are pleased to announce the opening of a new data enclave (http://dataenclave.norc.org).
The data enclave will:
(1) Promote secure researcher access to data that can be used to examine entrepreneurship and firm-level behavior,
(2) Develop a research community of professors, graduate students, and institutional researchers interested in business behavior and innovation, and
(3) Promote top quality research while protecting the confidentiality of business information.
For over 15 years ATP (http://www.atp.nist.gov/) has funded and monitored firms in creating and commercializing advanced technology. ATP has created a unique source of innovation data that researchers can use to study:
• Entrepreneurship and innovation
• Early stage technology development
• Commercialization of high-risk R&D.
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City is a private, nonpartisan foundation that works with partners to advance entrepreneurship in America and improve the education of children and youth. The Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS), currently in its third round of collection, is a panel survey of new firms. 4,931 businesses that started in 2004 were surveyed as part of the baseline study, with 88% retention of the panel in year 2. The first two rounds of data from the KFS will be released in November through the NORC Data Enclave and also through a public-use file. More information on the KFS and its release will be available at the 2007 Kauffman Symposium on Entrepreneurship and Innovation Data (www.kauffman.org/datasymposium).
In the first phase of the enclave, we will provide access to a limited number of research groups, as we optimize the procedures and processes for secured access to ATP data. These initial members will receive an early opportunity to publish findings from these data, substantial data assistance, and a greater opportunity to influence enclave content and procedures. The ATP program is also considering providing scholarships to a limited number of graduate students and junior researchers who wish to work with the data. Access to Kauffman Foundation data will be made available in November.
The deadline to apply for inclusion in the initial phase is August 31, 2007. For those not accepted in the initial phase, a second phase will be announced in the fall of this year.
More information about the data enclave is available at
http://dataenclave.norc.org/. You may also contact Tim Mulcahy, the Program Manager, at 202-223-3789. To get on the mailing list for updates about the data enclave or on scholarship availability, please register at
dataenclave@NORC.org.
We also invite you to attend two events at the Academy of Management annual meetings in August:
• An information reception at the Philadelphia Marriot on August 5, 2007
6:30 – 8:30 pm, sponsored by the Kauffmann Foundation
• A symposium entitled “New Approaches to Accessing Confidential
Business Data” on Monday, August 6, 2007 currently scheduled for 8:30 – 10:20 am at the Philadelphia Marriott, Franklin 12.
Remember, if you wish to be part of the initial phase, you must apply before August 31, 2007.
