NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITY : THE SCIENCE OF SCIENCE AND INNOVATION POLICY
    (SciSIP)
    http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=501084&org=SBE&sel_org=SBE&f
    rom=fund
    Deadline: 22 May

    From the SciSIP announcement page:

SciSIP will underwrite fundamental research that creates new explanatory
models and analytic tools designed to inform the nation's public and private
sectors about the processes through which investments in science and
engineering (S&E) research are transformed into social and economic
outcomes. SciSIP's goals are to understand the contexts, structures and
processes of S&E research, to evaluate reliably the tangible and intangible
returns from investments in research and development (R&D), and to predict
the likely returns from future R&D investments within tolerable margins of
error and with attention to the full spectrum of potential consequences.
Specifically, the research and community development components of SciSIP's
activities will: (1) develop usable knowledge and theories of creative
processes and their transformation into social and economic outcomes (2)
develop, improve and expand models and analytical tools that can be applied
in the science policy decision making process; and (3) develop a community
of experts across academic institutions focused on SciSIP. Characterizing
the dynamics of discovery and innovation is important for developing valid
metrics, for predicting future returns on investments, for constructing
fruitful policies, and for developing new forms of workforce education and
training. Potential applicants should read the "solicitation" on the web
page above. Note that SciSIP has two emphasis areas this year: "Analytical
Tools" and "Model Building". Proposals will need to make clear how the
proposed work pertains to either tools or models.

SPECIAL ISSUE OF RESEARCH POLICY ON
"TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IN LOW- AND MEDIUM-TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES"

Because the attention of policy makers, scholars and the public-at-large has
concentrated disproportionately on the 3-10 percent of modern economies
conventionally classified as "high-technology", the importance of
technological change in the older established sectors that comprise the bulk
of economic activity has tended to be underestimated. Although these low-
and medium-technology (LMT) sectors have not been totally neglected, they
are not well understood in terms of their current technologies and their
probable future development. This has broader implications because it
reflects a major distortion in views about the roles of research and
development and technological upgrading in modern economies as a whole.

To improve understanding of innovation and the use of technology in LMT
sectors, we are calling for contributions to a special issue of Research
Policy that will focus scholarly attention on the issue and, in the process,
provide necessary guidance for policy makers as well as for academic
    researchers.

Although we are willing to consider all relevant papers, discussion will
centre primarily on the following issues:

    (a) The technological environment of LMT firms. What domestic and
international external sources do LMT firms use in acquiring new product and
    process technologies?

    (b) The ways in which LMT firms manage their own development activities to
generate change, and the capabilities that they require to be innovative.
The strategies that LMT firms use to locate/develop new technologies,
largely in the absence of formal R&D activities on their own part.

    (c) Policy implications. Discussions of possible roles of policy makers in
enhancing the innovative capabilities of LMT firms.

Potential contributors should consult the Research Policy website [address?]
for information on length and style.

Abstracts (maximum 300 words) should be submitted to

    Professor Paul L. Robertson (paulr1@postoffice.utas.edu.au) 6 Lonsdale
Place, Wishart, QLD 4122, AUSTRALIA; or

Professor Keith Smith (Keith.Smith@utas.edu.au) Australian Innnovation
Research Centre, University of Tasmania, Private Bag 108, Hobart 7001,
    Tasmania, Australia.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 30 April, 2007. Following
vetting of the abstracts, full papers must be submitted by 31 July, 2007.

    The "big picture" strategy questions...

    - Where do competitive & distinctive advantages come from, and how are they
    sustained?

    - Why do some companies & new ventures consistently outperform their
    competitors?

    - Why do some businesses succeed in the same industry environments where
    others fail?

    - And what, if anything, can managers and entrepreneurs actually do about
    it?

The aim of this annual conference series is to improve our ability to answer
    these "big picture"
questions and other related questions by engaging some of the world's top
researchers on competitive advantage in Atlanta for 3 days a year.

    We expect to:

    - Share cutting-edge research, ideas, and theories.

    - Foster collaborative research efforts.

    - Build a worldwide association and network of researchers who are dedicated
    to advancing the
state of knowledge about competitive advantage.

The conference organizers invite the submission of unpublished working
papers that advance the state of knowledge about competitive advantage...

    - Conference registration fee will be WAIVED for all authors of papers
    selected for presentation
at the conference. Authors of papers selected for presentation will also
    receive conference
proceedings, catered meals, and deeply discounted hotel rates (but will
    be expected to pay for
their own hotel, airfare, & other travel expenses).

    - Submitted papers will undergo a selection process, NOT a formal review
    process -- so we will
not provide reviews or other feedback on any submitted manuscript.

    - Submitting a paper represents a commitment that at least one of the
    authors will attend
and participate in whatever session the paper gets scheduled for,
    whenever during the
conference that session is scheduled, and whichever format that session
    is. Papers may
be accepted either for a regular paper-presentation session format or
    for a research-
development workshop round-table-discussion format (which requires
    authors to provide
feedback to each other on their papers). Authors who commit to attend
    and participate but
then fail to do so, for any reason other than an immediate genuine
    emergency, may be
excluded from participation in future ACAC meetings.

    - Papers must be submitted via web-based submission system at
    http://www.bus.emory.edu/Rmakadok/ACAC/submit.html
    No e-mail submissions.

    - Papers must be submitted in PDF format, but Microsoft Word documents can
    be converted to
PDF format for FREE (with no software required) by using one of the six
    on-line file-
conversion web sites -- see the submission web page above for links and
    details.

    - The DEADLINE for submissions is Friday March 16, 2007.

    NEW SPECIAL FEATURE FOR 2007...

    The BrightHouse Distinctive Advantage Track

We now stand at the beginning of a significant shift in the way that people
    view strategy.
Many people assume that the #1 most important goal of strategy is to achieve
competitive advantage -- in other words, to be better, in some way, than
your competitors. But today, companies are increasingly recognizing that
DISTINCTIVE advantage trumps COMPETITIVE advantage virtually every time.

That is, being DIFFERENT is more important than being BETTER. The reason
for this is simple: If you just aim to be better than your rivals, using
the same metrics that they use, then even if you succeed, you will still
always have competition nipping at your heels. On the other hand, if you aim
to be different, then you may carve out a niche where you have no real
competition at all. Some call this phenomenon distinctive advantage, and
others call it "blue ocean" strategy, but whatever you call it, it requires
a fundamental shift in how we think about the goal of strategy.

Starting this year, ACAC will feature the "BrightHouse Distinctive Advantage
Track" to highlight the growing body of research on this topic. So, we are
especially interested in receiving manuscripts that focus on all aspects of
distinctive advantages -- including how they are conceived, discovered,
invented, created, organized, motivated, communicated, exploited,
    elaborated, grown, and sustained.

If you think your paper might be appropriate for inclusion in the
BrightHouse Distinctive Advantage Track, then please indicate this on the
cover page of the submitted manuscript.

Additional information about the Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference
    Series is available on-line at:

    http://www.bus.emory.edu/Rmakadok/ACAC/
All questions should be sent to: ACAC@MAKADOK.COM

    Society of Entrepreneurship Scholars
    Conference & Manuscript Boot-camp
    August 16-19, 2007

    Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio
    Submit via SES@cob.osu.edu
    http://fisher.osu.edu/departments/management-and-hr/society-of-entrepreneurs
    hip-scholars/

The Society of Entrepreneurship Scholars (SES), with the generous support
of the Kauffman Foundation, invites you to submit your best work - work you
believe will potentially merit publication in a top tier journal - to the
2007 SES Conference and Manuscript Boot-camp. The sole purpose of this
conference is to increase the flow of manuscripts about entrepreneurship
that are submitted to and published in top tier journals. We encourage
submissions from faculty in other genres who are interested in publishing
about entrepreneurship, as well as from junior faculty and doctoral students
    in the field of entrepreneurship.

At least two senior scholars will meet with each attendee individually.
These workshops will focus upon measures that you can take to improve the
manuscript and enhance its prospects for publication in a top tier journal.

Some sessions available at the conference will also provide a broader
discussion of issues central to the mission of the Society of
Entrepreneurship Scholars, enhancing the mainstream visibility of
    entrepreneurship research.

The anticipated scholar-mentors for the 2007 Conference include, among
    others;

    - Howard Aldrich
    - Jay Barney
    - Jean Bartunek
    - Jeff Covin
    - Julio DeCastro
    - Elaine Mosakowski
    - Dean Shepherd
    - William Schulze
    - Charles Snow

Between twenty and twenty-five papers will be accepted for the conference.
The sole competitive criterion for acceptance is the paper's perceived
potential for publication in top tier journals. Because submitted papers
will be judged based upon potential, they may be at any stage of
development; i.e., working papers as well as papers that have already been
reviewed and rejected by a journal. Papers may be conceptual or empirical.

Since the design of the conference restricts the number of participants,
only one author (who should identify themselves as the submitting author)
will be invited to participate in the conference. You may submit multiple
co-authored papers to the conference, but each submitting author must be
unique. If the submitting author is unable to attend the conference, the
invitation will be withdrawn. Co-authors may not attend in the submitting
author's place. All papers will be blind reviewed.

The 2007 Conference and Manuscript Boot-camp will be held on Friday and
Saturday, August 17-18 at Ohio State University. The conference chair for
the 2007 conference is Sharon Alvarez, Ohio State University. The conference
co-chair is Bill Schulze, University of Utah.

Questions can be directed to Sharon Alvarez at Alvarez_42@cob.osu.edu.

Submissions should be sent as an attachment to SES@cob.osu.edu no later than
March 30th, 2007. The submitting author should be identified on the title
    page.

The mission of the Society of Entrepreneurship Scholars is to enhance the
quality of scholarship in the field of entrepreneurship. Its operational
goal is to increase the flow of manuscripts about entrepreneurship that are
submitted to and published in the top tier journals. The Society sponsors an
annual conference and manuscript boot-camp with the support of the Kauffman
Foundation, as well as other activities aimed at increasing scholarly
discourse about entrepreneurship. Our metric for success is the number and
quality of papers about entrepreneurial topics appearing in the top tier
journals. The Society is organized and governed by its membership. The
Society is not affiliated with any journal, other scholarly organization, or
    academic institution.

    Society Officers:

Conference Chair: Sharon Alvarez, The Ohio State University

Co-Chairs: Bill Schulze, University of Utah.

Call for papers: Knowledge Management for Creativity and Innovation
    Minitrack (HICSS-41)

Knowledge Management for Creativity and Innovation Minitrack in the
    Knowledge Management Systems Track
    Submission deadline: June 15, 2007.

Forty-first Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS-41).
    http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_41/apahome41.html
    Mirror site: http://www.is.cityu.edu.hk/hicss

    January 7-10, 2008
    Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort
    Waikoloa, Big Island, Hawaii
Minitrack Chairs: Hind Benbya, Lynne Cooper, Nassim Belbaly

The objective of this minitrack is to explore the potential for Knowledge
Management (KM) to enhance creativity and drive innovation. Creating and
applying new knowledge are often cited as primary reasons organizations get
involved in KM. Yet, to date the majority of research in KM and KMS focuses
on knowledge reuse and transfer of best practices, rather than how knowledge
is created and applied to derive business value, generate new ideas, and
    develop new products and solutions.

In recent workshops addressing KM, scholars and practitioners have
identified the need for further research on: How knowledge is developed and
transformed into business value? And How KM/KMS contribute to creativity and
innovation both at the individual and organizational level?

This need is also recognized a high priority of leading organizations. The
CEO's of General Electric and Proctor & Gamble for instance have made
    creativity and innovation predominate corporate priorities (Brady, 2005;
Nussbaum, 2005). Responding to the emerging need for companies to develop
innovation capabilities, Business Week has recently created a new online
website - www.businessweek.com/innovate - to present the best research and
    thinking about the subject.

In line with this challenging research issue, this minitrack will draw
appropriate papers on the broadest range of research methodologies including
case studies, action research, experimentation, survey, and simulation.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

    - Knowledge and action: how knowledge is developed, transformed, interpreted
    and used to
make effective decisions and take actions
    - KM and New Product Development: how KM contributes to the generation,
    evaluation and
implementation of new products, services, processes and solutions
    - KM/KMS support for collaborative and creative work, e.g., design, research
    and development,
    exploration, customer support
    - Knowledge sharing, diffusion and creativity, as influenced by different
    organization cultures
    and structures
    - Managing knowledge exploitation vs. exploration dilemmas
    - Mechanisms associated with KM, creativity and innovation
    - The use of KM to reduce risk in creative/innovative processes

Our primary concern is to appoint applicants of the highest quality from any
area within the broad field of innovation and technology management.
However, applications are particularly welcomed from scholars with an
    interest in

    - Organisational (and interorganisational) issues
    - Managing projects in research, development and IT.
    - Technology strategy, forecasting and planning
    - Intellectual asset management
    - Service innovation
    - Development (and marketing) of high-technology products.

For appointment as a lecturer, a PhD is a requirement, preferably with
articles already published or in review in international refereed journals.

For appointment at senior lecturer or professorial levels, a strong record
of publication in leading refereed international journals and a demonstrated
capacity to teach effectively at postgraduate and executive level is a
    requirement.

For appointment at full Professor level, it would be an advantage to have a
record of building a research programme and effectively supervising PhDs.,
together with a demonstrated capacity to compete successfully for research
funding at national and (where relevant) at international level.
While it is envisaged that these positions will be full-time permanent
positions on the standard internationally-competitive UCD terms and
conditions, NITM is willing to consider more flexible arrangements for
    exceptional candidates.

The closing date for applications is April 30, 2007. Shortlisted applicants
will be interviewed in the first week of June, 2007. When replying, please
indicate at which level you wish to be considered for appointment.

    Research Discussions:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings! We are UConn students conducting research regarding faculty's
interaction with the acquisition and pricing of textbooks, and their
perspective on the students' experience. We feel that although there is
considerable research available regarding the consumer's side (the student),
little has been made available of the voice of the faculty. Please help us
out by taking 5 minutes of your time to fill out the online survey. We
appreciate your input and are most thankful.
