Open Rank Professorship "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" (Heilbronn campus)

    The positions

The TUM School of Management (SoM), Technical University of Munich, Germany, is currently inviting applications for up to three open rank professorship (i.e., we welcome applications at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor levels) in technology and innovation management and/or entrepreneurship for its new campus in Heilbronn. This opening is part of a major expansion of the SoM to a new campus, supported by the Dieter-Schwarz-Foundation. In total, 13 different positions will be filled at the new campus "Bildungscampus Heilbronn," which is situated in the region that arguably has the highest density of family firms in Germany. Hence, the School's aim is to make this campus a leading European center for research on family firms. At the same time, given that the industries these firms are situated in (e.g., automotive, manufacturing) are particularly affected by digitization, the School plans to establish another center focused on digital transformation. Both centers will strongly collaborate with related efforts in Munich, such as the Center for Digital Technology Management (CDTM) or the Entrepreneurship Research Institute (ERI).

While not a must, we could foresee the successful applicant's research and teaching interests would link to these topics. An interest and ability in building up said research centers, as well as a proven ability to acquire competitive funding are hence desirable qualities for applicants for Assistant or Associate Professorships, and are strongly desirable in case of applications for Full Professorships. For all ranks, pedagogical aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, as well as significant international experience are mandatory. Research ability will be evaluated according to academic rank, with Assistant Professors showing credible promise to produce internationally leading work, Associate Professors showing evidence of doing so at some regularity, and Full Professor being recognized leaders in their field. The professors to be recruited for the Heilbronn Campus are committed to conducting their research and teaching activities there.

    The university

Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of Europe's top universities. It is committed to excellence in research and teaching, interdisciplinary education and the active promotion of promising young scientists. The university also forges strong links with companies (with more than 1,000 cooperation agreements) and active collaborations with top universities, at home and abroad. Since 1990, TUM alumni have created 800+ startups and 14,500+ jobs. The spectrum of subjects is unique in Europe, ranging from natural sciences and engineering to medical, life and business sciences, with the most recently introduced TUM School of Governance. TUM's interdisciplinary research platforms play a substantial role in developing new technologies, designing new products and creating new business models. TUM is the first German university with an international campus in Singapore (TUM Asia), and is represented in the world through liaison offices across five continents. TUM is regularly highly positioned across a number of international rankings:

    ·     Excellence in working with students – #8 in the world (Global Employability Rankings)

    ·     Excellence in research - among top 50 globally (THE, Shanghai Ranking), top 1-2 in Germany

    ·     Excellence in entrepreneurship and innovation - best in supporting entrepreneurship among large German universities, with largest number of founders in Germany being TUM Alumni (German Startup Monitor) and #4 among Europe's most innovative universities (Reuters ranking)

Based on best international standards and transparent performance criteria, TUM offers a merit-based academic career option for tenure track faculty, to advance from an Assistant Professor position through a permanent position as an Associate Professor, and on to the Full Professor. All tenured professors gain a status of public servants in Germany ("Beamte"), which carries attractive tax-related and social benefits, with a generous pension scheme. The regulations of the TUM Faculty Recruitment and Career System apply and can be accessed here (https://www.tum.de/en/about-tum/working-at-tum/faculty-recruiting/tum-faculty-tenure-track/). As a public university, TUM's base salaries are determined by the State of Bavaria – overall compensation is negotiable and commensurate with experience. The TUM Munich Dual Career Office provides career consulting to the partners of newly appointed faculty as well as relocation and integration services. TUM is an equal opportunity employer. Provided equal qualifications, preference will be given to disabled candidates.

    The school and the department

Grounded in TUM's technological and entrepreneurial ecosystem, the TUM School of Management (http://www.wi.tum.de) educates responsible talents and pursues relevant research to advance innovation-based businesses and societies in Germany, Europe and the world. In the fifteen years since its establishment, ongoing commitment to world-class research and teaching at the interface between management and technology resulted in a triple-crown accreditation (AMBA, AACSB, EQUIS), bringing the school into the elite group of ~70 business schools in the world. The School has a rounded teaching portfolio, spanning undergraduate, master, EMBA and doctoral programs. We attract students and researchers from all over the world and actively promotes international collaboration and exchange. Further internationalization and even stronger international positioning are key in the School's strategic objectives for 2021.

The successful applicant(s) will join the Innovation and Entrepreneurship department, which currently includes Oliver Alexy, Christoph Ann, Nicola Breugst, Fabian Gässler, Joachim Henkel, Hana Milanov, Holger Patzelt, and Sebastian Pfotenhauer as faculty. Members of the department regularly publish in leading journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Research Policy, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, as well as Harvard Business Review and Sloan Management Review.

    The location

The city of Heilbronn (120,000 inhabitants) is positioned in a dynamic environment populated by internationally renowned companies such as Unilever (Knorr), Intersport (German Headquarters), Lidl, or Audi, as well as many SMEs across the fields of mechanical engineering, vehicle construction, packaging, food and beverage, and electrical engineering. It is these hidden champions that make the Heilbronn-Necker region the densest industrial cluster in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Stuttgart, the capital, with its international airport and companies like Daimler and Bosch, is 50km away to the south, and directly connected by Autobahn. SAP's world headquarters are located 50km to the west.

Heilbronn is also where the Dieter Schwarz Foundation (The Schwarz group is the parent of retailers Lidl and Kaufland) has shown a significant share of its engagement in relation to life-long learning. In June 2017, the Schwarz Foundation announced a collaboration with the TUM SoM to create a new campus focusing on the management of digital technologies, entrepreneurship, and family firms. The donation would encompass a total of 20 endowed chairs, at least 13 of which would reside in Heilbronn. Further investment into teaching and housing infrastructure is also on the way.
