This PDW will explore the contributions of the historical approach to strategy and organization theory. The goal of the PDW is to bring together two audiences: management scholars interested in history and historians interested in engaging with management scholarship. We start with the observation that although leading scholars have repeatedly made a call for the use of the historical approach to the study of management and organizations, in the search for general and abstracted laws "social science cut itself off from history" (Zald, 2002: 381). The PDW aims to discuss how historically informed research can contribute to the building of theory in management and organization studies. The PDW will bring together prominent scholars who have conducted historically-oriented research to discuss the different epistemic traditions in management and organization theory, and how the different qualitative and quantitative approaches used by management scholars could incorporate history. The PDW will also address the challenge of using historical research in theory-building and how to publish research that uses historical methods in management journals.
Pre-registration is not required.
