Join the AOM Panel Symposium on “Curing the Pathology of Big Science: Reinventing “Trading Zones” as Science-Industry Collaboration”

Breaking the boundaries of science while creating beneficial industrial spillovers is often associated with the building of large, technologically complex, and expensive research infrastructures that until today continues to increase in scale. To illustrate, CERN plans to build a new 90 km long particle collider with an estimated cost of $17 billion. In this panel we contend that this kind of development shows signs of the Pathology of Big Science, which assumes that building bigger and more expensive research apparatus will always lead to dramatic progress.

Thus, in this panel we will explore alternative ways to generate science and create better linkages between science, industry, and innovation with concepts including trading zone, open innovation in science, boundary infrastructure, and serendipity. Join us in discussing the present and future of large-scale endeavors in science!
