Dear Colleagues:
We are thrilled to announce the "Generative AI and the Epistemology of Knowledge: Redefining Individual and Collaborative Research" PDW at the upcoming AOM Annual Meeting in Copenhagen. This workshop is sponsored by the Strategic Management (STR) and Organization and Management Theory (OMT) divisions. The PDW will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm CEST (GMT+2) at Bella Center: Hall C- C3-m4.
Integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) into research processes is reshaping how knowledge is produced, shared, and applied. Building on our successful experience of running a 2024 AOM PDW (titled "Harnessing Large Language Models (LLMs) for Management Research"), this PDW focuses on two interrelated dimensions of AI's transformative impact: (1) as a driver of new epistemological frameworks that reshape discovery among researchers; (2) as a research tool for individual scholars, with applications ranging from text classification to theory generation. Our proposed PDW aims to explore how AI redefines individual research practices, drawing insights from the "science of science" literature and organizational theory. Participants will engage with leading scholars to discuss how AI affects research processes and the implications of these changes for management research and organizational structures.
The PDW will consist of two parts, each lasting about 75 minutes: A) Four scholars will show how they rely on LLMs as research tools and discuss the challenges. This section is open to all. The panelists include:
Toby Stuart of UC, Berkeley
Douglas Guilbeault of Stanford University
Abhishek Nagaraj of UC, Berkeley, and
Navid Asgari of Fordham University & IBM Thomas Watson Research Center
B) In the second half, which requires registration and submission of a research synopsis (up to two pages) OR a complete manuscript, the attendees will be divided into groups, each led by a scholar, to discuss their ideas with the other members and receive feedback. Round-table discussants include:
Toby Stuart (UC, Berkeley)
Douglas Guilbeault (Stanford University)
Abhishek Nagaraj (UC, Berkeley)
Shinjinee Chattopadhyay (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)
Amirhossein Zohrevand (Leiden University)
Navid Asgari of Fordham University & IBM Thomas Watson Research Center
Harsh Ketkar (Bocconi University)
Deepak Nayak (Ohio State University)
If you are interested in the second half of the PDW (i.e., research round tables), please register by July 4, 2025, using the following link: https://forms.gle/r7ybWvhf7LcFGjfR8. Since the number of available spaces will be limited, submissions will be evaluated based on their quality and relevance to the workshop theme. PDW selection will be communicated by July 10, 2025.
Note that registration for the AOM Annual Meeting is a mandatory requirement to attend any part of this PDW. Please get in touch with the PDW organizers if you have any questions.
Best regards,
