Dear Colleagues,
We are excited to invite you to our interdisciplinary lecture series "Humanity in the Automated State: Human Agency and Institutional Transformation in the Digital State" for the academic year 2025/2026 at Leiden Law School, Leiden University, The Netherlands.
Throughout seven sessions, distinguished scholars from law, management, public administration, and computer science will explore critical themes: What does it mean to be human when bureaucratic discretion gives way to algorithmic classification? How do we maintain dignity when treated as data points rather than individuals? Can we ensure meaningful participation in decisions that affect us when those decisions are filtered through automated processes? How do we protect those made vulnerable by algorithmic bias and preserve spaces for resistance and appeal?
Join us for the first lecture in this series by Professor Christine Moser (VU Amsterdam) on 20 November 2025, 11:15-12:30 (A0.51, Kammerlingh Onnes Gebouw, Steenschuur 25, Leiden). Streaming will also be available, allowing online participants to listen, but not actively contribute.
