We welcome you to attend the panel session "Using Historical Methods To Improve Inference In Strategy Research," scheduled during SMS on Sunday, October 1, from 9:30 to 10:45 in Willow West.

    Our panelists are:

    • David Kirsch, University of Maryland
    • Brian Silverman, University of Toronto
    • Mary Tripsas, UC Santa Barbara
    • R. Daniel Wadhwani, University of Southern California

Abstract: This panel session aims to have leading scholars share their perspectives on the usage of historical methods in management research. Even though management scholars often admit that 'History Matters,' there is a limited understanding of how scholars can engage with history to produce knowledge that is generally recognized as contributing to the broader field. Specifically, the panel discussions will cover topics such as best practices in the usage of history, methodological solutions offered by history, possible evaluative criteria that can be used to determine the quality of a historical study, editorial and reviewer perspectives on the usage of history, the status of causality of claims generated by historical explanation, and testimonial considerations while engaging with history.

Thank you for considering this panel session. We hope to see you there.
