Minutes of the first online meeting of the Sport and Management Group
(9 December 2025)
1. Ideas for organizing the inaugural in-person meeting of this community in Philadelphia 2026
AOM staff confirmed that organizing a Caucus (similar to the one in Copenhagen) would be an appropriate format for our inaugural in-person meeting. I will submit the Caucus proposal and ask the AOM Meetings Team for a more attractive time slot, ideally avoiding the last day of the conference.
2. Information on planned sports-related PDW/Symposium submissions for Philadelphia 2026
So far, ideas for three PDWs and one Symposium have been suggested by group members:
- PDW: Using Sports Data to Advance Management Theory – decision on organization still pending
- PDW: Publishing in Top Sports Management Journals – main organizer: Chad Seifried
- PDW: Leadership, Teamwork, Resilience & Purpose Through the Lens of Kayaking – main organizer: Erica Salvaj
- Symposium: Sports in Management and Organization Studies – main organizer: Roman Gibel
Once we have the final list of events, we will contact the AOM Meetings Team with a request to avoid scheduling overlaps as much as possible.
3. The importance of attracting new members to the community
We agreed that each of us will invite at least some AOM members to join this group in the next days.
4. Ambassadors' and members' engagement on Connect@AOM
Since the path towards higher levels of formal organization within AOM (DIGs) leads only through a vibrant community, it is important to maintain active participation on Connect@AOM. Each ambassador has taken responsibility for one of the community's areas of activity (as described here: Successful Launch of the AOM "Sport and Management Group"). If each of us posts even just once a month (in our assigned area or any other relevant area), this will already be a big step forward for the community to become truly active.
In this context, we warmly welcome a new member of the community, Syreeta Thomas (welcome!), who has kindly volunteered to contribute in particular with regard to Student Projects and Communication with Student Groups.
The meeting was recorded, but we decided not to share the recording publicly. I will circulate it by email to the current community members.
