About this Research Topic
Building on the Millennium Development Goals, the UN Sustainable Development Goals are the cornerstone of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, billed by the UN as "An Agenda of unprecedented scope and significance." The seventeen ambitious goals, which are intended to be reached by 2030, are conceived as integrated, indivisible, and as balancing the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. They are organized around five core pillars:
• People: ending poverty and hunger and ensuring that all human beings can lead fulfilling lives in a healthy and dignified environment.
• Planet: protecting the environment while ensuring sustainable use and management of natural resources.
• Prosperity: ensuring environmentally sustainable economic growth, mutual prosperity, and decent work for all.
• Peace: building societies that are peaceful, just and inclusive, and in which human rights and gender equality are respected.
• Partnership: strengthening global solidarity to address inequalities within and between countries, by focusing on the needs of the most vulnerable.
This Research Topic addresses fifth Sustainable Development Goal, which is to "achieve gender equality and empower women and girls." Progress toward this goal is measured by a number of individual targets and indicators.
In its most recent SDG progress report, the UN notes the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including an intensification of violence against women and girls, an expected increase in child marriage, and increased care work at home. While stressing the central role women have played in responding to the pandemic, the report highlights the lack of women's representation in key decision-making roles globally, at 25.6% in national parliaments, 36.3% in local government and 28.2% in managerial positions. With one in three women having been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence, 63 per cent of parliaments still lacked rape laws based on the principle of consent as of 2020. Though over 90 per cent of parliaments prohibited gender-based job discrimination, almost half nonetheless restricted women from certain jobs or industries. Meanwhile, data collected between 2001 and 2019 indicated that women spend around 2.5 times as many hours as men on unpaid domestic and care work. The report notes the need for swift action to get back on track toward achieving gender equality, including strengthening systems to track budget allocations for gender equality.
This Research Topic will address the fifth Sustainable Development Goal from a communication-specific perspective, considering efforts to bridge the gender gap in terms of access to resources, inputs vs outcomes, and gender equality and women's empowerment. It will not only enquire into the goal's global promulgation and into individual local, national and international communication programs in support of it, but will also consider the framing and elaboration of the goal, its adaptation to particular geographical contexts, stakeholder involvement in it, gender equity initiatives at the workplace, and media reporting on it. The research topic invites contributions addressing economic participation, health and survival, educational attainment and the political empowerment of women and girls across the world.
Given the setbacks to gender equality across the world from the coronavirus pandemic, this year's edition of the Research Topic will focus particularly on the challenges and complexities of achieving gender equality in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
