    Hello,

My colleagues and I are seeking to join a presenter symposium for the 2020 AOM conference in Vancouver. Our paper, summarized below, focuses on employees with concealable chronic health conditions.

Please let me (dhanani@ohio.edu) know ASAP if you have a planned symposium that might be a good fit for our paper to join. Alternatively, if you have a standalone paper that may align with ours, we may be able to put together a new presenter symposium submission. Thanks for your consideration.

    Abstract:

Many chronic health conditions are considered to be invisible stigmas because they are not readily apparent to others. The hidden nature of such health conditions creates unique experiences for employees with chronic health conditions as these employees must decide whether or not to disclose their health condition to others and may experience anxiety about how others might react to this disclosure. In this study, we explore the negative consequences associated with concealing and fearing disclosure among employees with a chronic health condition. Further, we propose organizational inclusion climate as a key antecedent that may generate more positive appraisals and identity management behaviors among employees with chronic health conditions and may in turn reduce these harmful effects. Results demonstrate that a fear of disclosure is associated with decreased job satisfaction and increased work interference with health, emotional exhaustion, turnover intentions, and counterproductive work behaviors. Concealment is similarly associated with increased work interference with health and emotional exhaustion. Finally, climate for inclusion is associated with reduced fear of disclosure and decreased identity concealment as well as more positive health, attitudinal, and behavioral outcomes.
